The Scout Mission – Gameweek 10

Having reached midweek, we turn our attentions to the forthcoming Gameweek. Once again, we outline those players, teams and scenarios that we’ll be closely monitoring and assessing come Saturday’s first whistle.

The United Lineup
David Moyes’ teamsheet at the Cottage is of keen interest. In defence, both Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand returned from recent injuries to provide the platform for a clean sheet in last night’s Capital One Cup tie, while Rafael lined up at right-back having made way for Chris Smalling in Saturday’s 3-2 win over Stoke. It’s unclear whether Jonny Evans will return alongside Phil Jones at Fulham, or if Moyes will call on the experience of Vidic and Ferdinand again having failed to return a clean sheet in five league outings. The right-back role also appears to be up for grabs with Smalling, Rafael and perhaps even Jones, in the frame. Further forward, the performances of Ashley Young, Wilfred Zaha and Adnan Januzaj, with the latter playing the number 10 role in last night’s tie, have given Moyes food for thought. With Nani so ineffective against the Potters, his starting role, along with Shinji Kagawa’s, is surely in question. We’re still watching and waiting for a solid midfield asset to emerge.

Pellegrini’s Rotation
The City lineup is also much anticipated. With Manuel Pellegrini expected to rotate for tonight’s Capital One Cup tie at Newcastle, we would anticipate that the likes of David Silva and Sergio Aguero will be rested ahead of the Etihad meeting with the Canaries. However, with a vital home Champions League meeting with CSKA Moscow looming the following Tuesday, there is real concern that Pellegrini’s rotation may extend to Saturday’s match. Both Aguero and Silva will be backed strongly by Fantasy managers having seen Norwich concede another four goals on their travels at Old Trafford last night. Equally, Pellegrini will have noted that Chris Hughton’s defence has now allowed eight goals in their last two away trips and may consider that he can afford to curtail the pitch time of his leading attacking threats. Having rotated this season and paid the price with league points, the Chilean decision on Saturday will offer us further insight into his current stance on resting prize assets.

Arnautovic Against the Saints
Having opened his account in spectacular style with a dead ball strike at Old Trafford, Arnautovic followed this up with a smart finish as the Potters sneaked past Birmingham in last night’s tie on spot-kicks. Classified as a midfielder and priced at 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and 4.9 in Sky Sports, Arnautovic has clear potential as a source of goals if Mark Hughes’ side can establish a significant threat. That’s a big “if” given their current league record, although Saturday’s display at United will surely have handed Hughes reassurance that his side can turn the corner. We’ve been watching Arnautovic for several weeks but this weekend could be pivotal – with two goals in two matches, he now faces up to a Southampton defence that has conceded just a single goal in their last six matches. If the controversial Austrian (who was moved to the role in “the hole” at St Andrews last night) can taint that record, significant acquisition could be on the cards ahead of Britannia meetings with Sunderland and Cardiff in the next four Gameweeks.

Benteke’s Recovery
As Roscola identified in last night’s Frisking the Fixtures, Aston Villa’s strong schedule promotes investment in their Fantasy assets. The issue, however, is that our potential targets are basically restricted to the firepower of Christian Benteke. Having missed a spot-kick and several opportunities to return to the goal trail in the home defeat to Everton, we’ll be monitoring his display against a West Ham defence that has excelled in recent weeks. The tussle with Winston Reid and James Tomkins looks a bruising scenario but, if Benteke emerges with a fifth league goal, there’s little doubt that we’ll see major interest in the Belgian as a new option for our front lines. Elsewhere, we’ll also have one eye on the rest of Paul Lambert’s troops, in the hope that perhaps another name could emerge to tempt interest over a run of healthy-looking fixtures.

Coutinho and the Liverpool Formation
Having just missed out against West Brom, we’re expecting Brendan Rodgers to unleash Philippe Coutinho for the trip to the Emirates. We saw the Liverpool boss tweak his formation against the Baggies, dropping Victor Moses to the bench to bolster his midfield presence. It’s not clear how this will be adapted to harness the talents of Coutinho. Presumably it will be Jordan Henderson making way, although, instead, we may see Rodgers revert back to a four-man defence. Certainly, with Arsene Wenger likely to play with Olivier Giroud as a lone striker, it remains to be seen if Rodgers will be content to counter this with three centre-backs. He’ll surely attempt to flood midfield areas and that may force his hand and see him return to more conventional flat back four. We’ll certainly be looking out for those telling training bib shots later this week.

Barkley’s Minutes
With Ross Barkley subbed on the hour-mark at Villa and Leon Osman impressing, there are now doubts building on the 18-year-old’s security of start and pitch time. As we mentioned in today’s Scribbles , Roberto Martinez has come out and shown a degree of defiance when quizzed on the likelihood of handing his young midfield talent a rest. For now, then, Barkely would seem safe but there is little doubt that he may now feel the pressure to maintain his high level of performance and, should he also earn a fourth booking that would place him on the suspension tightrope, we may start to see some twitchiness amongst the 36% of FPL managers who currently own the Toffees man. His pitch time and performance against Spurs requires monitoring.

Sessegnon’s Potential
Midfield differentials look to be a huge factor right now and, just as Arnautovic carries some potential for Stoke, West Brom’s Stephane Sessegnon is a player with strong attacking intent who could prove a handy acquisition in the coming weeks. While the Baggies are hardly prolific, they have been creating opportunities aplenty, with Sessegnon often central to their attacking ploys. So far, we’ve seen just a single goal from the Benin international but, with Crystal Palace at the Hawthorns this weekend, we’ll be studying Sessegnon’s form very carefully. At just 6.6 in the FPL and with five home fixtures in the next eight Gameweeks, he is clearly a prospect for those giving up on the traditional heavy-hitters. Look out for a Members Monitor article on Sessegnon from Paul in the next 24-hours.

Hernandez vs Michu
Talking of failing heavy-hitters, Michu’s stock is set to come under increased scrutiny for Sunday’s derby clash at Cardiff. The Spaniard has been a bitter disappointment of late, failing to capitalise on plum home fixtures against Sunderland and West Ham. While we’re keeping the faith for now, we’ll be watching for the form of the returning Pablo Hernandez. As yesterday’s “Frisking” revealed, Swansea’s fixtures remain strong, right up until Christmas, so investment in Michael Laudrup’s outfit is worth considering. Having sparkled in the early season, Hernandez could present an intriguing alternative to the 8.9 priced Michu – available for just 5.8, he’s another one of those attacking midfield differentials that could prove so precious as we struggle to break up our template defence and attack.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Myhill and Guzan seems like a terrible idea. I'm guessing there's a nice run of fixtures to rotate them but even so Villa don't do clean sheets and Myhill won't start forever (if Foster is out until the Jan wildcard this is a moot point).

Its looks good bar the lack of Arsenal, I'd also be tempted to have a Saints defender in there despite the fixtures.

They have some good fixtures, but maybe theres better keeper choices. Foster should be out for a while though, and Myhill has some good fixtures as well. Sotons fixtures incline in difficulty, which is why i have left them out thus far. Most people have atleast one Soton defender, so i`m kind of looking for something a bit different. Lack of Arsenal is very intentional. The fixture list for them during the next couple of months is completely abysmal, and though the fpl-assets they have can produce against top tier teams as well, theres bound to be rotation and again, most people have atleast a couple of Arsenal boys in their team atm.

*REPOST AGAIN FROM PREVIOUS PAGE* - was expecting more debate on this one

Further to a previous post regarding having BLOCK defensive coverage or SPREAD defensive coverage I've just had a nosey at some stats on fpl.

By BLOCK I mean more than one defender from the same team.

By SPREAD I mean only one defender from a team.

It's not rocket science but looking at defensive coverage from 3 teams (Southampton, Tottenham & West Ham) I've come up with the following backline showing the points totals so far: -

      Boruc (51) / Jaaskelainen (46)
      Lovren (58) / Fonte (54) / Vertonghen(52) / Reid (45) / Dawson (44)

Using 4 at the back and just going off the totals of these players if you played the ones with highest overall total from the start you would have 260 points from your defence alone.

This total would have improved further to 287 if you had managed to pick the highest scoring combo in each individual week.

This upsets me as someone who prefers to go for spread coverage

I know I'll certainly be considering this option next season - a lot of people predicted all 3 of these teams to be pretty lean before the season started so not an unfeasible line-up.

What's more your team value would have increased by £2.4m and you wouldn't have had to use any transfers on your defence.

Will the defensive form of these teams continue over the season? Should I ship some in? Currently only have Boruc

Has anyone got any stats or theories regarding this for/against?

      Who's had this back line?

What other teams would have been profitable?

What happens when Spurs and Southampton run into a bad run of games (as is about to happen)? I agree that double or triple coverage can be very profitable (as Tosey has proved in the past) but it also gives you absolutely no flexibility and is very risky.

There's no saying that they will suddenly start conceding. Already faced some decent teams. Maybe we need to come up with some teams that will start a good run of not conceding and swap a pair out. West Brom/Man Utd

Nice bit of analysis. It does assume perfect foresight though, especially when you say you would have gained £2.4m. It's easy to say having Soton/Spurs/WHU defence would have seen you do well, but does it mean it will be the best going forward?

I'd still prefer to spread, but might double if there's significant attacking threat (e.g. getting Ivanovic if I already had Terry) just because I'm risk averse. You also run the risk of having 3 tough games and having to surrender any defensive points that week.

Yeah easy to come up with in hindsight.

Wanted to know where people stood on this strategy really - always been a spread man myself

Is there any killer combinations anyone can think of for upcoming fixtures? Eveton/West Brom/Fulham/Hull? Throw some premium in there Chelsea/City?

I don't think City are premium at the moment, especially with rotation and injuries! I'd def go Chelsea, Spurs, Soton. Then WBA, WHU, Eve to make up numbers.

would you consider doing them as pairs then or just individuals?

Boruc Clyne Cole Terry Dawson Walker?

Or throw Reid & Rat in there.

Or do you prefer Boruc Vertonghen Terry Ridgewell Reid Coleman?

I think it depends on the players, you can certainly justify doubling on Soton for their price. Otherwise I'd go for something like Ivanovic, Walker, Clyne, Coleman, Rat. Boruc in goal. I'm currently on Mignolet, Walker, Coleman, Vidic, Chester and Turner. Looking at Vidic>Clyne or Vidic>Ivanovic this week.

Liverpool and Arsenal worth considering as well.

Yeah Liverpool are definately due a clean sheet and Arsenal are usually more reliable for them than so far this season so 0-0 this weekend then?

                  I've currently got Mignolet Boruc
                  Taylor Clyne Coleman Walker Johnson

Apart from last week I've struggled for points at the back. Whenever I choose Mignolet then Boruc outscores him. Could argue it's bad management.

Yours seems pretty strong Vidic played last night and may be due to come back in to the Utd team. May increase chance of clean sheets there. Or like you've thought remove the risk and get Ivan. Who's got potential attacking points too.

        AHA!!!

Maybe i'm on to the key to success and that's why hardly anyone has responded.

Or maybe it's just boring and nobody is interested in the debate.

Could be an option. Reduces the risk then. Are centre backs the way to go this season?

am one for the SPREAD camp. Sure, block style looks brilliant when pulled off right but when fixtures turn, they're left in a very bad spot.

For example, last season i went 1 stoke, while rivals went triple Stoke defence. Worked great for them for that run, but when Stoke defence got leaky, they were stuck with those defenders as transfers were focused on attackers, or having to get rid of Stoke defenders for a hit if they wanted to. And I was able to capitalize by moving funds around the team more effectively.

I think block style works very well if you're focused solely on a H2H league, but classic league and playing the overall ranks, spread is the way to go imo. Just gives you a bigger safety net and you can focus transfers more efficiently.

Great topic of discussion to bring up though, have an upvote!

and for what it's worth, max i would go is double defence for any team.

            thanks for the upvote.

yeah i can see that max double makes sense then if they do go on a bad run it's easier to shift things around.

Say you had two City defenders then Kompany gets injured - is it worth keeping the other one as you know City will concede without him? Or shift to another pairing?

Smae with United - Vidic gets injured then less likely to get clean sheets.

            Lots of factors to consider

Yep, alot of factors to consider. Hence, a bigger safety net going with spread. And to make that point clearer, see the latest article. Teams in my ML are just starting to triple up on SOT after yet another cleansheet and bringing in TOT defenders.

Plays into my hands 🙂 i hope...knowing this season, they'll probably end up better off. "casuals"

Maybe like someone else said maybe double up on 2 then spread the rest so Boruc/Clyne & Dawson/Walker just as an example.

Keep checking my ML and everyone seems to go for the spread so another reason i was weighing up block to maybe gain an advantage and move up the league.

I was very happy with Vorm and 2 swans defenders the year they came up. Did divide the other places up. This season I will probably end up with 3 Boruc, Clyne, and someone else as soon as they get past the tough run of fixtures. Never know after that, it is more likely as the season goes on and it is easier to get a block with few bad weeks. Plus injuries...

Only double I've got at the moment is Boruc & Clyne. Should I get another one in? They seem prettty organised so will they concede that many on this bad run they're supposed to be going on?

That's what I'm thinking come January - the tight defenses should be a little clearer. Maybe double up on some then. Will make the analysis a little clearer.

Bear with me here people as this is a 3 point question which I need your help with. best answer wins a "thank you"

1- out of my defence which 3 should play this week?

      zabaleta,lovren,coleman,johnson,shawcross

2- who is the better captain? rooney or suarez? fulham are bad and rooney is in great form but with suarez anything can happen, from scoring a couple goals to giving ozil a lovebite.

3- for next week, is selling shawcross and lukaku for Tomkins and benteke a good idea?

        Terry, Williams, Rat, Murner Rosenior
        Silva, Hazard, Brady, Ramsey, Ravel
        Rooney, Aguero, Suarez
