Scout Scribbles – Tigers Force Fifth Round Replay

Hull’s cup draw with Brighton leaves question marks over their Gameweek 29 clash with West Ham. John Terry could return for Chelsea this weekend, Ron Vlaar reckons he’s now fully fit for Villa, Lacina Traore is determined to grab the goals for Everton, Fernandinho is back for City and Tony Pulis is keen to ease Glenn Murray back into his first-team plans:

Aluko Strikes Sets Up Replay Clash

Steve Bruce made six changes from the side that lost at home to Southampton last Tuesday as Hull travelled to Brighton in the final tie of the FA Cup Fifth Round. With both Nikica Jelavic and Shane Long cup-tied, Sone Aluko and Yannick Sagbo led the line as the Hull boss kept faith in his recent move to 4-4-2. Elsewhere, Allan McGregor returned from suspension to replace Steve Harper in goal, Ahmed Elmohamady filled in at right-back due to injuries, whilst Abdoulaye Faye got the nod over Alex Bruce at centre-half, though James Chester was fit enough to be named on the bench after a recent hamstring injury. Sagbo’s late leveller, which earned the Tigers a 1-1 draw, means their Gameweek 29 trip to West Ham is still undecided.

The Scout Says: Frustratingly for Fantasy managers, this result temporarily scuppers our planning in the short-term, with the replay expected to take place in a week’s time. Hull have some kind games up next – Cardiff and Newcastle in the next two, in addition to clashes with West Ham and West Brom. A replay win would place major question marks over keeping the Hammers clash within Gameweek 29 – a real headache, given that just 10 teams currently have a fixture that weekend. In terms of selection news last night, Chester’s return to the bench is a worry for those who have taken a punt on Bruce in recent weeks, with the former likely to partner Curtis Davies in the heart of the back-four once fully fit.

Vlaar Back to Full Fitness

The Villa skipper has revealed he has now fully recovered from the hamstring injury which has plagued his game time over the last few months.

“I feel good, it’s 100 per cent now. It was frustrating, after my calf injury in December, but I’ve only missed the West Ham game this time. Sometimes you have to make a choice. It is not about one game, it is about 12 or 13, so that’s the most important thing. The West Ham game was just a little too soon and I shouldn’t have played, so that was the right decision from all of us. You have to take it from one game to another. Fitness is so important and you can’t play at 95 per cent in the Premier League.”

The Scout Says: After playing every minute of the first 13 league fixtures, Vlaar has managed just four lots of 90 minutes in the subsequent 13. Given that his side have failed to register a single clean sheet without the Dutchman in their ranks, compared to seven shut-outs in Vlaar’s 20 starts, Paul Lambert will be desperate for his captain to remain injury free. Priced at 4.3 in the Fantasy Premier League game, Vlaar has five very favourable home games (NOR, STO, FUL, SOU, HUL) to bolster his appeal, though it should be noted that five of those clean sheets have arrived on the road, with Villa perhaps best suited to playing on the counter away from home.

Mourinho Hopeful of Terry Weekend Return

The Blues boss sounded a little frustrated when discussing the muscle problem which has kept John Terry out of action for the past two weeks but is still optimistic his captain will return in time to face Everton at the Bridge this weekend:

“The medical department always tell me he looks like he’s ready. I was told that probably he would play this game [City]. He didn’t, so now they say for sure he plays the next game. But I don’t know.”

The Scout Says: Terry has now missed three games through injury and, whilst the Blues hammered Newcastle 3-0 in the first of those matches, a 1-1 league draw at West Brom was followed by a 2-0 FA Cup defeat at City last weekend. Mourinho’s men have conceded just two goals in the last eight league games with Terry in the starting line-up and, with his likely return boosting their clean-sheet potential, many may look to double up on Chelsea’s rearguard as a viable means of dealing with the blank Gameweeks which are set to hamper many of their title rivals.

Traore Looking to Make His Mark

The Everton loanee discussed his successful debut at the weekend after he needed just four minutes to open his account for the club in Sunday’s 3-1 FA Cup win over Swansea:

“When you think it’s been nearly five months since I played a competitive game, it was great to get 60 minutes under my belt. I’ll start to feel even better when I’ve had a few more games, but I feel good now. I will start to get my full match fitness and continue improving. I’m hoping to get to my top level, my peak fitness as soon as possible – and it’s only with working hard in training and playing those minutes out there on the field in games that that will happen.”

The Scout Says: With Romelu Lukaku still hampered with an ankle problem, the big Ivorian looks set to retain his starting berth as Roberto Martinez looks for his power and presence up top against Chelsea. Whilst he may not be handed the full 90 minutes, another pleasing performance this weekend could put Traore in the driving seat for the lone forward role as Martinez looks for alternatives up top, given that Lukaku netted once in 10 matches before sustaining his injury. Aside from a Gameweek 29 blank, Everton have three very favourable home games (WHM, CARD, SWA) and a trip to Fulham in the five Gameweeks directly after their Chelsea visit.

Fernandinho Back for City

Manuel Pellegrini confirmed the Brazilian is fit and available for City’s Champions League clash with Barcelona after a couple of weeks on the sidelines with a calf complaint. The City boss also revealed Sergio Aguero is not yet ruled out of this weekend’s home showdown with Stoke after stepping up his recovery from a hamstring problem:

“Fernandinho has a chance to play tomorrow. He is in the squad and trained without any problems today. Aguero is not in the squad but we will see if we can have him back for Stoke City on Saturday.”

The Scout Says: Given that City have back-to-back blanks directly after the Potters clash, Fantasy investment in their main men will be put to one side for the time being. Essentially, this gives Aguero time to reclaim his starting berth as Pellegrini’s side prepare for a run that will see them handed a double in three of the final nine Gameweeks of the season. Whilst Aguero’s minutes may be managed by his manager for fear of yet another injury, Fernandinho’s return bodes well for Yaya Toure, with the defensively-minded Brazilian’s presence in central midfield allowing the Ivorian the platform to bomb forward and join in his side’s attacks. Indeed, further analysis shows how crucial Fernandinho seems to be for City. Pellegrini’s side have failed to score in four league matches this season – each time, the Brazilian was omitted from the XI.

Pulis Still Keen to Ease Murray Back

The Palace boss will continue to utilise the prolific frontman from the bench after months on the sidelines with a serious knee injury:

“Glenn will be a good substitute for us for a few weeks. I don’t see him starting a game. He needs another week or so. We’re just happy to have him on board and have him part of it, but we understand he’s been out for nine months.”

The Scout Says: Pulis utilised a 4-4-2 formation in his first few months at the helm but the recent acquisition of Tom Ince has resulted in a change of system, with Marouane Chamakh preferred as a lone striker in a 4-4-1-1. Given the success of the set-up against West Brom, with Ince grabbing a goal and assist in a 3-1 win, it was no surprise to see Pulis use a similar shape for last week’s match at Everton before weather caused the game’s cancellation. With the Eagles reliant on a single striker system, then, it seems Murray will continue to earn game time as a replacement for Chamakh late on in games.

May be to encourage Man City (or discourage Barca) and if they continue in CL.. they could rotate players in PL and lose the title to Chelsea 😉

Tell me if I'm over thinking it or if this makes sense!

    I have:
    Mannone - Marshall
    Kos - Ward - Bardsley - Shaw - Bruce
    Hazard - Lallana - Yaya - Sterling - Mata
    JRod - Benteke - Suarez

And I'm thinking of the following:

Bardsley -> Azpi for GW 27
Yaya -> Noone for GW 28
Benteke -> RVP for GW 29
Lallana -> Silva for GW 30 if I can afford him. Otherwise maybe Navas or something. OR Hazard -> Yaya (although this would lower my team value a bit more than a bit)
    Wildcard for GW 31

Or should I rather try to be moderate and, for example, get someone else instead of RVP and keep Lallana and Hazard both, even though it would mean less DGW players? Of course Wildcarding for GW30 is an option as well, depending on the other DGW schedules...

    So!

    A) Go with the series of changes

    B) You're overthinking it

    😛

I did not get the move Hazard to Yaya just before the WC. The fixtures seems similar for GW30

I think you are overthinking. Just focus on GW29 and then see what happens (DGW fixtures, if City continues in CL and will rotate or not, injuries etc...)

A bit confused: is Arsenals missing fixture - i.e. the one they'll have in a forthcoming DGW - away to chelsea?

If it's GW31 then that gives them away to Sprs and away to Chelsea?

I really want Barca to beat City and then play Chelsea in the next round and absolutely annihilate them.

Then want the media to print story that Chelsea side beaten by worst Barca team of recent years.

The thing is they probably are the worst Barcan team in recent years but they are still amazing and capable of hammering any team on the planet.

          I'm being 100% serious here:

Do you think there is a way to utilize the dedication and passion I have for fantasy football and use it for something a bit more worthwhile? Maybe for more financial gain?

I mean, I spend a great deal of time (and that's an understatement) researching my fantasy football team each week. Spread out over a season, it becomes an obscene amount. I come home, check my team, check the scout/ latest news, fiddle with my formation, check the odds, check price fluctuations. But for what? A couple of hundred quid at the end of a season and bragging rights over my mates (and that only lasts the summer before we start all over again). On balance, the time and effort I'm putting in (over a year) doesn't come close to matching the rewards at the end. Fantasy football often feels like a second job!

So, it got me thinking about stocks/shares/trading etc. Surely, all I'm (we're) doing here, is taking part in a slightly subverted version of playing the market? Am I right? I mean following which teams have a new manager, could be akin to a company with a new CEO. Following which players are rising/falling is not too dissimilar to that of following a fluctuating company. Buy low, sell high!

I guess my point is, has anyone else thought the same in this community? Has anyone given that kind of thing a go? If so, where would I start in looking into that? Does anyone work in that trade and think it's not a fair comparison? Are there sites like FFS that become as vital to knowledge of the trade?

I really enjoy fantasy football, and out of the 2 million plus players that play, I often come in the top 0.1% of the players. I just feel that IF the talents are transferable, should I not be putting it to more beneficial use to myself?

          Thoughts welcome.

It's really just time you're investing and time can always be invested into something more productive, but if you don't get enjoyment out of what you're doing it makes it much harder to do day in day out.

Very true Epic. However, there's investing time into something you're good at, and investing time into something you're bad at. I'm trying to work out if being good at fantasy football means I would be good at 'the market'. I feel if I'm making money, then I will subsequently enjoy it. Maybe..

Well enough, around 1k a month on average.

I traded equities for several years, but prefer the volatility of Forex for day-trading.

It's not something I would recommend without any prior experience in the markets though.

So interesting to hear someone is thinking along the same lines. The first and most obvious way I leverage what football knowledge I have scraped together is betting, including in-play betting. Trends identified and an understanding of which players get more chances and are in better form can get you an edge over the bookmaker. I run a fairly consistent profit on Paddy Power and withdraw money from my betting account fairly frequently, though it doesn't come close to paying the bills.

The other is football analytics. This is people using football information to forecast football results (not just scores but anything you can bet on). Again the customers for this often are bookmakers, or media etc. I have strongly considered applying for a job at these guys - they look really good. They even have a job available titled "football watcher". I don't think they have a shortage of applicants.

I'm not suggesting you do this, but...

If you regularly make consistent profit, then simply increasing the amount you're betting will mean you earn enough to pay the bills I would have though.

As I say though, I wouldn't suggest it. Things can go tits up at any point.

Yeah I have considered scaling it up, but obviously pretty wary of it. I'm thinking a very gradual scale up to see if it works. It requires a lot of focus and it's an ongoing learning process learning to bet rationally. I think I'll treat it as I do any betting session, decrease stakes in event of losses and increase stakes in event of gains.

When I was younger I tried it with poker. When I first started I was a beast on the low cost tables. I hundreds by starting with literally a few pence. I then made the step up straight to expensive tables. It didn't quite work out for me let's say 😀

I know it's not the same thing as football bets as I realise now I will have been up against a different breed of player, but still. Taught me Lesson.

I think the love for football is the core here, so if you want to find some sort of synergies it seems prudent to look at something involving football. Betting is the most obvious one, but the odds are stacked a bit higher against you than in football. All in all though, I think FPL is less "talent" than it is passion. We're not really splitting the atom here.

The future could bring you something big, with the experience you have now and players pass being bought by independent investors it won´t be too long before we see a stock market of players. And that´s where you get the advantage because you already now the mechanics of it... of course this is all speculation but it might be very real soon.

You do well at fantasy football because your passionate about it. Find something that you are equally passionate about and you can make a success of it. Interestingly, I trade in stocks and shares and from experience I can tell you that's another level. You are not just dealing with analysis but money management and the psychology of putting your savings on the line. However, unlike betting in trading you set the odds and determine the risk. But you also have professional traders in banks who are playing games in the financial markets to take your money, push your psychological buttons and money management. Welcome to the biggest game on the planet.

Sunday Times supplements (business, money) is a good place to start. The Economist and Financial Times are decent too.

Also, research the Dollar - understanding its history and importance in global markets is valuable.

                Certainly. You would want to study a technical analyst course first. The courses can be found at;

                http://www.sta-uk.org/

                http://www.mta.org/eweb/StartPage.aspx

This will take you 1-2 years to gain basic industry entry level skills. Stay on this road and avoid every charlatan selling 'secrets' and 'magic 90% winning trading systems'. By the end of either course, a lot of things will be come apparent to you and you will know which way to go next. But stick with these 2 organisations and don't get tempted by the 'apple.' I know professional traders who took 5-15 years to become decent traders so this is not an overnight success story. Market Wizards is a good starting book to read about guys who made it big as traders.

One other thing. If you want to make a living as a trader then you should learn how to be successful. This book 'think and grow rich' is the finest study of success in history. You read this version and not the modern day 'fluff' version. This book is more of a manual to read countless times and will help you on your journey. Develop the basic skills and mind set for success before parting with your money. 🙂

Thats what I thought but Aubameyang seems to be nailed on as of late on the right wing. He wasn't getting as much game time earlier in the season. He's been in blistering form so might be worth the risk.

          For anyone interested:

          Courtois/DDG
          Adriano/Smalling/VanDerWiel/Alaba/Azpi
          Robben/Hazard/Garcia/Motta/Perez
          Aubameyang/Messi/CR7

Have a slight reservation about Adriano but if he does start hes a bargain.

Too much United, we're very dodgy at the back.

Even against Greek teams without their best player, I doubt we'll keep a clean sheet.

May try get a cheaper GK for DDG. Smalling is only 4.5 so hes worth keeping I think.
Also if I can get an extra .5 I can do Alaba to Dante whos been on a bit of a scoring spree lately.
              Thanks Parm.

Get a €3.0m in for DDG. Otherwise Leno is €4.5m.

If I get a 3mill GK for DDG it mean i can upgrade Adriano to a 6mill defender.
Gets rid of my worries about him and gets me a nailed on player.

Also weary about Adriano. I feel Alba will start now that he's back and fit. Don't expect Barcelona to keep a CS regardless

True but for 4.0mill its worth the risk, anymore expensive and I think ill be looking at other teams.

Please can I get some help on my mess of a midfield...

          Hazard -- Yaya -- A Johnson -- Eriksen -- Pozuelo

Two FT's and £2m in the bank.

          Thinking A Johnson to:

          A) Lallana
          B) Puncheon
          C) Ince
          D) Snodgrass
          E) A N Other

And carry the other FT over to next week... Thoughts?

I'm looking at these 5 defenders this GW, do I have the priorities right?

Playing Ward (MUN) Azp (EVE) Chambers (whm), benching Dann (MUN) and MOlsson (TOT)...

          Play Ward, Dann or MOlsson?

Tough one. Probably MOlsson. You've got RVP and no Spurs as well so I think I'd definitely go with MOllson actually.

They are looking mighty good defensively at home and MOllson arguably has better attacking threat than the two others... thanks, could be a good shout. Makes for a better "potential score" at least, hehe.

Odds are in MOlsson's favor as well, 4.0 to 5.2.
