The Community Round Up

With they symptoms of double Gameweek fever in full effect, the majority of hot topics continued to focus on the potentially lucrative set of fixtures in Gameweek 31. However, there were still plenty of other pursuits to occupy us, most notably a controversial assist, mini-league prizes and an alphabetically challenging five-a-side tournament. We revisit these discussions and take a look at the latest activity in our community competitions, with a focus this week on those dedicated to the Fantasy Premier League’s most improved managers.

The Hottest Topics

We couldn’t let the week go by without taking another look at the fall-out from its most controversial incident – namely the belatedly awarded Luis Suarez assist.

To recap, on Sunday night, Suarez’s assist for Rafael’s handball in Liverpool’s win at United was not credited by the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), leaving many of those who captained the Uruguayan in a distraught state as they retired for the evening. However, come the morning, the FPL reviewed the situation and, despite announcing confirmed scores on Sunday night, addressed the issue by mid-morning. Andy’s breakdown, just hours after the whistle at Old Trafford, offered a superb explanation as to the reasoning behind the decision – pure consistency. His account of all the assists given for handballs so far this season proved one of the week’s most popular posts, not least among Suarez’ captainers.

While all bets are now off on Gameweek 31, we just had to acknowledge Fortunesalwayshiding’s extraordinary analysis of Newcastle’s Paul Dummett from earlier in the week. Regardless of whether the information will be of use to us from this point on, the sheer effort and the fact that it’s unlikely that the unfashionable Dummett has ever had so much attention, warrants us paying it some further kudos.

Bandwagons have been inevitable whilst in the grip of a double Gameweek, so Scratch’s hot topic in midweek offered a timely and, as it happened, a rather prophetic warning on jumping eagerly on the top targets from the week. He advised us all to show caution when assessing David Silva following his haul at Hull and, as it turned out, one match and a single assist into Gameweek 31, there will be more than a few wondering if their investment was a wise one. There was certainly some sound logic on show – wise words ahead of the Gameweek 34 doubles, perhaps.

Elsewhere there was some concerted effort to wean the community off the topic of Gameweek 31: The Tinkerman was on hand to look ahead to the rest of the season, and in particular the effect that teams with little motivation could have on the final Premier League table. His analysis of these potential mid-table minnows, such as Newcastle, Stoke and Aston Villa, took a look at the sides due to meet them during the run in. He ponders whether they could prove to be pushovers when pitted against teams fighting relegation or pushing for a place in Europe.

Assessing such long-term issues can prove crucial to mini-league glory and Agbonlahorse took the opportunity this week to find out a bit more about the community’s competitions and, in particular, the prizes at stake. For Kingpin, mini league victory is worth a whopping £700, although he faces a tough climb to victory as going into Gameweek 31 he was ranked 100 out of 200 contenders. Whitman 2013 is in better Fantasy Football health, currently in first place in his mini-league, which awards a wallet-splitting £625 to the winner.

To underline just how we craved double Gameweek distraction, this week’s busiest hot topic was Funkyav’s alphabetical five-a-side game, which demanded that we construct teams of footballers using the first two letters of their surname. This resulted in over 120 replies at the time of writing.

Finally, it wouldn’t be a Sunday night round-up without another discussion of the FPL ruleset. This week it was Sinik’s turn to canvas opinion, suggesting that extra points be thrown our way depending on a player’s position. Are the FPL testing the water with the Ultimate FPL rules?

The Community Tournaments

Teltzham Hotspurs continues to provide inspiration to all those with a lowly rank. He remains in first place in HeelsOverHead’s Worst to First – 2 Million+ Club, for teams with an overall rank below two million in the first five Gameweeks. Going into Gameweek 31, he had an impressive overall rank of 2,189. There are seven teams now in the top 100,000 and Bales of Fury has also joined Teltzham Hotspurs in the top 10,000.

There are more ascending heroes in Kings of Lyon’s Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? league, for those outside the top 1,000,000 at the Gameweek 8 mark. Going into Gameweek 31, 60 of the 65 entrants are now within the top 1,000,000 and 16 players, including Kings of Lyon, were in the top 100,000. Top of the league is Elizabeth Genius who, with a rank of 8,961, is the first to breach the top 10,000.

In AZ’s Non Qualifiers Cup, for those who failed to qualify for our own Paddy Power cups, AH67 was the highest scorer during Gameweek 30’s round, with a tally of 69. JameswestPot, Danny Rex25, King of burgers, Hagop, Lazarus and OcProdigy all went into Gameweek 31 having won all three of their group matches.

In TorresMagic‘s leagues, 54 remain in his Last Man Standing competition with The Elite 64 draw made once Gameweek 31 is complete.

Finally, the Fantasy Football Scout’s contributors and moderators league welcomed a new leader after Gameweek 30, with Spencer snatching top spot from Gaz Downright by a slender three points. Sadly for Mark, the ScoutCast team overtook him again tonight thanks to Adam Lallana’s goal.

Anyone thinking of punting on Baines for the Toffees' second DGW? Am thinking of doing Shawcross to Baines and Miralles to Barkley in preparation for it by then... 🙂

    Bench 1
    A) Zabaleta(ars)
    B) Shaw(NEW)
    C) Bardsley(WHM)

Currently on Zab. This is just speculation but seen a few tweets about Arsene saying to players he's leaving end of season, hence the cancelles press conferences. Anyhow, think this and the Chelsea result will trigger a response from Arsenal

Nobody in the team suits that style, let's be fair and that's why England will probably go out at the group stage and won't win a trophy for many years to come.

What's the point in sitting back and inviting on pressure esp v the bigger countries? The team is obviously not good enough to do that and it's proven it in the last few years.

Picking 5 liverpool players but then putting them in a defensive formation won't help. Asking sturridge to play wide is stupid. The tactics are all wrong, just a defensive mindset.

England's single biggest problem imo, and for decades, is that they don't actually have a style..in fact never have had...Never done tippy tappy, never played on the break, never defensive or long ball..nothing...We only play "our eleven men might be better than your eleven men"...Somebody tell me one time when England had a style and what it was..?

I thought this was whilst watching the six nations and they said that Ireland made a Lenister move for the try. We need to start playing the Stoke way. Win the corners, muscle the set pieces.

Nah thats commiting too many men in attack. Forget strikers we need to get more CB's on the pitch. Caulker, Smalling, Cahill at the back with Jones in midfield. Dem corners.

Well yeah..maybe...Whatever we do we need to do it well...Whether it's tippy tappy football like Spain or Boooze fags and parties like Jack Charlton's republic from yesteryear..we don't actually do anything though.

anything really..as long as it's a plan. To pretend we do "something" is just kidding ourselves. Lallana and Rooney play entirely different kinds of games, they are both good players and might get results...but they aren't of the same type..same goes for Carroll and Rooney..or Carroll and Lallana...if you take my point. No style.

I'm cautiously optimistic about the new generation because they've been molded by European influences and might be the first one to fully escape the hoofball complex that developed in the 80s onwards. England actually used to play intelligent possession football, as shown by the 'wingless wonders' World Cup winning side - we've just had so many years of it that we've completely forgotten.

It maybe needs a manager with some teeth. I'm not putting him forward but using him as an example...Mourinho...Never has been one to pander to reputations or pressures, he knows what he wants and everybody has to fit in around it. He doesn't care who he upsets regardless of reputations or stature, he's in charge and it's his plan. The FA only ever go for "safe" picks as managers who pick players based on the sun ratings out of ten and the popular picks of Joe public...Even in the Seventies they had Clough and Charlton wanting the job..who did they go for ?..piggin Revie and Greenwood.

Mourinho has those qualities and is probably the best tactician in the world. Given the players he has and his motivational qualities, he would get close to the most out of them.

I think familiarity is a serious problem with international teams and explains why so much international football looks like the players don't understand each other - they don't! The more time a national team spends together, the better their fluidity. This can be done by picking players from the same team or which play similar styles (so the Real and Barca mix at Spain works), or giving them more time to practice together. I understand that the South Korean team spent a whole season preparing for the 2002 World Cup and as a result greatly outperformed expectations.

A Liverpool spine mixed with intelligent technical players would work in my view - Henderson, Gerrard, Sterling and Sturridge, plus Ox and Wilshere would be a mobile and perhaps even frightening attack.

Agreed Isacki....we just need a manager to do it. I remember years ago one of the Italian manager's playing an almost AC Milan team in the world cup..and ditched Pepe Signori as striker to accommodate it (Lazio)...Brave decision but at least it's a decision...and a plan.

Ballsy. Also Italy played the Juventus system at Euro 2012 and almost pulled it off despite having unheralded individual players.

Yeah, I accidentally left Lallana out of that team when he definitely should be considered too - just shows that we have more options than people think we do, right under our nose.

    So I got lambasted for taking a -16pt hit before this gameweek, so I thought I'd come back to let those people know how it went. The transfers I made were;

    Fonte > Baines
    Shawcross > Coleman
    Hazard > Yaya
    Lallana > Silva
    Adam > Mirallas
    Ade > Jelavic

If i'd stuck with the players I had I would've had 22pts (this includes the bench players who would've replaced Ade & Adam) + 16pts. The players I brought in have taken 49pts and all play again this week.

Yes it was a gamble, and Yaya's hatty helped immensely but sometimes those hits pay off.

The common response I'll expect to get will be "with more planning you could've had that team without any hits", and yes I could have, but I made sure that I could field 9/10 players for that horrendous gameweek, and crunched similar numbers to see that I made a few points doing so.

Granted, I didn't get particularly lambasted on here, but at work I took a bit of a verbal one prior to kick offs. I had planned on coming back here after part one of the gameweek whether these transferred had paid off or not, but it felt nice to come back and offer a response to everyone's blinkered view to points hit

Yeah to consistently deal with hits you just gotta put numbers on your decisions. Estimate how many points the outgoing player will get, estimate how many points the incoming player will get, deduct any hits, if the number is positive, consider the transfer.

I don't take huge hits that often but I do -4s pretty much every other week because the constant changes in fixtures and form open up loads of profit opportunities. In fact, if you bring in players with good fixtures, you improve your team for free even if you just break even. Last week I did Mata & Lallana > Yaya & Mirallas (-4). That broke roughly even. This put me two transfers ahead of the game, and let me pick up more DGWers this week.

Exactly. Having Man City due a few extra GWs and Everton's DGW in 34, and Hull's in 37, I may've spent 16 points this week, but (barring injuries) I'm left with 9 players who have a future double, which works out as a point per game.

    Anybody else have Dzeko ?

Whats the likelihood he will be tucked up in bed Tuesday night ?

    Or ..... a cameo appearance.

Though, he does have a habit of scoring when starts on the bench.

Anyone improve their rank sat night and dropped after today, not sure if it's good or bad as it means we have more DGW players to come?

Would always have happened, although I had Vlaar and hoped for a clean sheet to be honest. I wish I'd dropped by more, less DGW players for those around me! Wonder if I can manage another mammoth rise after the midweek games...

Just watched the Stoke match...fantastic. Which one of the scouts had Arnautovic for a few weeks earlier in the season?..Whichever one it was...Great pick, bad timing...He looks good, very good.

Was Mark if I recall correctly.

I am pleased to see that having got off the Coutinho wagon he is still continuing to be his spectacularly unpredictable self.

          Blanking, benching and assisting randomly.

          Still can't shoot.

He's expensive and think Suarez is coming back into being the main man. DOnt think Liverpool will be winning every game with 6 goals in the next few weeks and they have very tough fixtures so I dont want to double up on them.

SCOUT PICK CHALLENGE - MID GAMEWEEK 31 UPDATE

Apologies for the (very) late update to the spreadsheet - completely forgot somehow! The rankings however seem to be currently at a standstill with none of the top three scoring points today, and as such we still have:

    1st - Zep (98pts)
    2nd - McGrubbs (94pts)
    3rd - Djerbil - Feyenoord at my Helm (93pts)

There has been some movement lower down, noticeably Scratch being the only player to have Eriksen in their squad! Massive jump in points for himself.

Also, only Zep and McGrubbs are beating the Scout Picks + Differentials (93pts) for the additional bonus point. A lot to play for, and things will change... Keep a look out! There are a lot of players very close.

You can view rankings on the following spreadsheet link: https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=4C7B4AC17811122!522&authkey=!AB-BatPfVH5sgAw&ithint=file%2c.xlsm

This spreadsheet link remains constant, so feel free to bookmark it.
