Dugout Discussion

The Dugout Discussion – Sunday

Sunday has a lot to live up to and, from a Fantasy perspective, it looks to be little more than a scouting mission.

None of today’s four participants have a double fixture in the Gameweek, meaning that, in Fantasy Premier League terms, they’ll be few assets on show that will influence our Gameweek tallies.

Even so, Tottenham’s White Hart Lane encounter with Southampton should tell us plenty about the remaining prospects of their players over the run-in. Similarly, Aston Villa go into their home meeting with Stoke looking for a third consecutive win, with Christian Benteke certainly up for consideration as an end of season differential.

As always, you can look to our Twitter feed for news of today’s lineups, while our Dugout Discussion chatroom is warmed up and ready to go for those looking to scratch that real-time reaction itch.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Thought it was enough that Jelavic and Gerrard let me down yesterday, the players they replaced Lambert and Lallana could easily outscore them. Crap isn't it.

That's what you get for picking jelavic... Gerrard, fair enough, he'll definitely pay you back. But jelavic? There are sooo many strikers out there before you come to jelavic. Trying to be too clever granville 🙂

Jelly was a sound call, which could (and should) have paid off. Missed penalty was a 6-9 point swing.

Missed penalty was justice for picking a sub-standard player when so many better options available. Jelavic would just stink up any teamsheet. And to give him one of your precious front 3 slots? Madness if you ask me.

With Martin Allen back at Barnet I had a thought about Sherwood and to a similiar degree Paulo DI Canio.

Martin Allen has forged a career with us coming in to save us with 5-10 games of the season left to go. It strikes me that Sherwoold and PDC share similiar characteristics and should start doing similiar. There is no shame in always being the saviour rather than the steadyhand.

Mourinho is also similiar and how he keeps the farce going all season I dont know, but he is brilliant for doing it.

        Martin Allen:

First case: Eight games to go, Allen comes in and gets 7pts out of 9 and then fecks off again.

With just eight games remaining of the season Martin Allen was asked to return to the club as Manager and he was able to inspire the Bees in his first game in charge to a creditable 2-2 draw against table-topping Chesterfield after Barnet at one stage were two goals down.

Allen stayed for just three matches before he moved in somewhat controversial circumstances to League 1 Notts County, themselves also in relegation difficulties. Under Allen, Barnet secured seven out of nine points and a resurgence had begun. Giuliano Grazioli and ex-Fulham boss Lawrie Sanchez then steadied the ship and secured some vital victories in the remaining matches to secure League 2 survival.

Second Case: Three games to go, we avoid relegation on the final day.

        Sanchez was relieved of his duties with three matches remaining with Martin Allen again being called up to mastermind a points gathering operation. Barnet needed a victory on the last day of the campaign and duly won at Burton Albion to escape the drop; Allen had again accumulated seven points out of a possible nine;

Third case: 1pt of the playoffs Martin Allen is back!

When Spurs were winning, Tim Sherwood was a brilliant manager; They lose a couple matches and the media turns on him, so now everything he does is madness and a 'scene'.

He seems like an underrated manager who just needs to offload some of AVB's terrible work

He is not underrated. He was overrated initially. He is tactically naive and was so even when winning. The worst thing is he found a system that works (4-4-2) then stopped using it, sold a striker it was ideal for (Defoe) and proceeded to play poor midfield after poor midfield. I mean Dembele on the wing?

Rubbish. Sherwood was never a brilliant manager. AVB's results weren't as bad overall as everyone makes out aside from the high-profile tonkings... which continued under Sherwood. With the exception of possibly the Man U match I don't think Sherwood has won any matches that AVB wouldn't have won and believe that he's lost more than AVB would have

I think Sherwood did ok because he released the players from the straight jacket AVB imposed. He seems to have come unstuck because it doesn't look to me as though he has any proper tactical plan, nor the ability to react in games.

Don't understand why Spurs fans give AVB such a pass. He was terrible at Chelsea because he would try to win the games from the touchline. He had all these talented winners at Chelsea, and kept over managing every second of the game, like he was bossing a U-10 football side.

He did the same thing at Spurs! Sherwood let's the players play and use their natural talents, he's not trying to play a chess match from the sidelines

I'm a Spurs fan and one thing I will credit AVB with is shoring us up defensively (with a couple of high profile exceptions!) but it was at the huge expense of any flair or threat going forward. It clearly wasn't working and the players clearly weren't playing for him.

Sherwood had an initial impact by putting and arm round the shoulder etc but he hasn't shown anything so far to suggest there is any merit in giving him the job full time - too hotheaded and lack of tactics. He needs to go and put in some years managing Brighton etc and bringing them up from the championship to earn a proper PL job.

You a Spurs fan too? Aren't you concerned at alarming dip in performances and in some of his pretty embarrassing antics?

Put it this way he's done a fairly decent job for a caretaker but I've not seen anything to suggest we shouldn't be looking to upgrade in the summer.

Not a Spurs fan at all! Maybe that's why I like his antics, because the PL is in such desperate need of characters. He's doing a good job overall imo, but the results have not been good recently. He needs a season with a few of "his" type of players and a preseason to train with them

Even though the results were decent as I took a long while to be won won over to MoPo, over Adkins as I preferred his style of football. MoPo was just trying to get a bit more of a solid foundation first, now Saints play proper exciting, expansive, excellent football. Although the defence does again look suspect I prefer it.

It really does just come down to wether we play Wanyama, or not. As central midfielders are influencal when it comes to dictacting the style of play, we can play him and lose a lot going forward, or not, and being rather rubbish at defending.

Azpi and Bassong benched, Lallana transferred out Giroud transferred in.

I absolutely suck at this game.

It was. I have no regrets. Just funny when you see guys you had getting goals. Got rid of Lallana recently too. 🙂
