Fixtures

Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 33 – The Strong

Our weekly scan of the upcoming fixture list brings the endgame into sight now, as we take a look at the upcoming schedules over the next four to six Gameweeks. As the Premier League title fight reaches its nail-biting conclusion, three of the top four have very favourable fixture lists to boost their points potential, whilst two of the bottom three are also set for some kind-looking schedules in their valiant battles to beat the drop:

Man City

Man City GW33

Despite a tense draw at the Emirates, City are still widely tipped for the crown courtesy of their two games in hand and a kind remaining fixture list. Manuel Pellegrini’s side are hot Fantasy property for the same reasons. A run-in that includes no fewer than five profitable-looking home matches and two double Gameweeks warrants our full attention.

A defence that was once considered too porous for Fantasy purposes has now kept a clean sheet in five of the last six games, bringing the added bonus points of Vincent Kompany and Martin Demichelis into consideration. Pablo Zabaleta is all but assured of his place (unlike the rotation bonanza on the opposite flank) but has no assists in 2014, suggesting that his early-season attacking threat has evaporated.

In midfield, Yaya Toure’s extraordinary season shows no signs of abating, while David Silva has shown an upturn in productivity with two goals and two assists in four games. Samir Nasri is also worth considering, priced at the relatively kind 8.1 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. Up front, Sergio Aguero has admitted earlier today he’s determined not to rush his injury comeback after breaking down twice already – whilst the Argentine’s eventual return will force us to reassess City’s attack, Edin Dzeko currently looks in the driving seat for further starts and seems the one forward Pellegrini can rely on to produce in Aguero’s absence.

Tottenham

Spurs GW33

Humiliated for the second time this season by a rampant Liverpool, Tim Sherwood’s grip on the helm is looking increasingly fraught. The fans are becoming disgruntled but at least the fixtures are on his side as he looks to end the season on a positive note. Spurs’ remaining home games include Sunderland, Fulham and Aston Villa, which could hardly be kinder, whilst trips to West Brom, West Ham and Stoke could also bear fruit.

Tottenham’s defence has been rocked by injuries, and Kyle Naughton has been deputising for Kyle Walker – at just 4.1 in FPL he could be good value with these fixtures if the latter remains sidelined. At centre-back, Younes Kaboul has been preferred to Michael Dawson alongside Jan Vertonghen, but with the Belgian limping off at Anfield, Dawson could be set to regain his starting berth, although Vlad Chiriches completed 90 minutes for the Under-21 side last week to step up his recovery and present Sherwood with an alternative. In midfield, Christian Eriksen just might have returned to first choice and demonstrated his potential with two goals and an assist against Southampton. Roberto Soldado has picked up a hamstring injury, but with Emmanuel Adebayor now back in training after missing the last two with a heel injury, Sherwood will be a little more optimistic of ending the season on a high.

Chelsea

Chelsea GW33

Losing to Crystal Palace at the weekend was definitely not in the script, but despite Jose Mourinho’s protestations, they’re not out of the title race and will be using their remaining excellent fixtures to push hard. Home games against Stoke, Sunderland and Norwich ought to be profitable at both ends of the pitch, whilst trips to Swansea and Cardiff are also appealing. Only the Gameweek 36 clash with Liverpool looks daunting for the Blues.

Their defence has shown some very Jekyll-and-Hyde form recently – the Blues backline has produced a clean sheet in each of the last four home games but has conceded in the last four road trips. Even so, the defensive unit was singled out for praise from Mourinho after the Palace defeat and all four are recommendable for Fantasy purposes. In attack, Eden Hazard’s remains the stand-out candidate, with game time guaranteed, though the Belgian has stuttered in recent matches, with his last three goals now arriving from the spot. It’s hard to look elsewhere in the Chelsea midfield and up front, with rest and rotation blighting all the alternatives.

Arsenal

Arsenal GW33

A draw against Man City didn’t do either team any favours, but once this week’s testing visit to Goodison Park is dispensed with, the Gunners have one of the best fixture lists around, with home games against West Ham, Newcastle and West Brom as well as trips to Hull and Norwich. Arsene Wenger will be hopeful of securing next season’s Champions League qualification with those games and Arsenal could be a source of much Fantasy profit over the run-in.

The loss of Laurent Koscielny has dented their resilience of late but he looks likely to return in time for the best of these fixtures to boost their defensive prospects. In midfield, Santi Cazorla is an expensive gamble, having tailed off in form, but one that could pay off, while Lukas Podolski has played a part in all of the last six games and scored or assisted in the last two. The German lacks the guaranteed game time of Olivier Giroud – despite his patchy season, the latter still sits fourth amongst forwards in the FPL game and has the schedule to deliver more points.

ALSO CONSIDER

Fulham
Five points adrift of safety, the Cottagers seem likely relegation candidates. Felix Magath’s side still have some decent fixtures remaining, though, with Norwich, Hull and Crystal Palace all paying visit to Craven Cottage over the run-in. Their defence is rather pricey, given their form, though David Stockdale has become first choice at 4.3. In midfield, Lewis Holtby has racked up 20 points from his last three starts and Ashkan Dejagah – priced at 4.9 – has now scored three goals in six Gameweeks to make a case for his budget appeal.

Aston Villa
After taking the lead at Old Trafford, Paul Lambert’s men were a little unfortunate to ultimately lose 4-1 and it seems that the Midlands outfit have stepped up their form just a little. They have a good run-in to use that form to end the season on a high, with home games against Fulham, Southampton and Hull, along with trips to Crystal Palace and Swansea. Shutting out Chelsea recently proved that there could still be points in their defence – Ron Vlaar offers good value and Brad Guzan always has save points in him. In midfield, 4.4-priced Fabian Delph has a goal, two assists and five bonus points in his last four, while up front Christian Benteke may finally be finding his form after a hugely disappointing season; his three goals in four games suggests that he could be a differential for the run-in.

Cardiff
A last-gasp goal against West Brom earned the Bluebirds a vital point last weekend. Things aren’t looking great in their bid for survival but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side do have a collection of decent fixtures to give themselves a fighting chance, with home fixtures against Crystal Palace and Stoke over the next three Gameweeks. Steven Caulker’s fifth goal of the season highlights his attacking potential from the back, whilst cut-price midfielder Jordan Mutch has delivered an incredible 37 points over the last four Gameweeks and will be hoping to add to that tally.

    Am I good to go?

    Mannone
    Azpi - Coleman - Demichelis
    Yaya - Hazard - Gerrard - AJ
    Suarez - Sturridge - Lukaku

Subs: Davis - Ward - Jedinak - Demel

Evra > Demichelis is my proposed move.

I'm not going to chase points with Ward. I did think of swapping those two, but AJ looks sharp at the moment and hopefully he'll start.

Yup AJ does look sharp but I don't see it as chasing points if you play Ward, ignore his assist vs Chelsea, the clean sheet is more important and I reckon he'll get another. Good luck whatever you decide!

Think it is time to take some chances now. Looking at doing Sturridge & Gnabry out for Dzeko & Eriksen for 4 points. Leaves me with a very strong front 8, but Mata misses next gw, and I'm happy to bench Mirallas this gw. Any thoughts?

          Mannone Marshall

          Coleman Chester Cahill MOlsson Vlaar

          Haz Silva Yaya Miralles Ki

          Dzeko Sturridge Suarez

          2 FT, 0.4 ITB

          1. Get rid of Olsson (don’t need for this GW despite decent fixture) and bring in a CPL defender(Dann) in anticipation of the DGW
          2. Get rid of Ki and MOlsson and bring in CPL defender (Dann) and Mutch. I will then play Mutch ahead of Miralles (ARS) this GW, saving Miralles for the DGW
          3. Any other ideas?

I am 0.1 short of straight away Ki to Mutch.

-8 is pointless too as you would have to bench someone with a good gw.

Nolan + 4 at home to livperpool I would take over Mutch.

True but both SOT and liv are shipping goals quite easily... and City are the 2nd most attacking team in the league going for a league title.

City defenders won't come in handy, but mids like yaya, silva and nasri should fare well.

          I have:

          Ruddy
          Azpilicueta, Cahill, Zabaleta
          Johnson, Yaya Toure, Hazard, Lallana
          Sturridge (VC), Lukaku, Suarez (C)

          Sub: Sterling, Chambers, Collins

I was considering Johnson -> Eriksen due to more favourable fixtures?

Thoughts? - and any other options?

In fairness, Neuer did fantastically well to save that, Welbeck would have beaten most keepers with that effort. I'd rather see him thinking about it and making a decision to try something rather than just losing his head and hitting it as hard as he could in Neuer's direction..

For me Wellbeck fluffed it , I suppose I ain't his biggest fan tbh.
You need to be clinical in those situations , I felt if he had put his foot through the ball , low and hard he would have converted.
For me last night was all about pride and respectability , United did this ,
                I don't expect them to progress .

Yep, to be leading 1-0 against Bayern Munich is a massive feat.
Massive respect to United and Moyes for showing they can still handle the big occasions at times, even if it was a very defensive performance for most of it.

I doubt they'll progress but yesterday I would have laughed at the notion, now I can genuinely see a glimmer of hope for United fans 😯

Yep but it was in Manchester, that has a part to play, Bayern have been unbeatable at home this season and have won every single match bar a 3-3 draw with Hoffenheim, doubt United will be the first to beat them on home soil.

            (A) GW33: Nolan -> Eriksen

I like your thoughts on getting in Arsenal mf , those fixtures are tasty.

Yeah, some ARS cover from GW34 looks a decent idea.

A lot hinges on Aguero - if he doesn't make the squad this week I think there's no way he'll play both in the double. And then C becomes pretty tempting imo.

Herein lies the problem - unless he gets some decent minutes this w'e I think there's little chance he will play both games in the DGW.

              I wouldn't go for B)

Depends on Aguero vs Dzeko then tbh..

I like C as Hazard is more essential this week than Eriksen and Dzeko should get some points vs Southampton too..

A and C are very close though.. Tough call.

Yeah, not having Hazard this week would be a pretty big concern.

Even if Aguero does play both of the DGWs (I think unlikely), Dzeko is currently the form striker at MCY and I wouldn't be surprised to see them start with them both up front, with Yaya, Silva, Nasri and Fernandinho in midfield.

Southampton fairly leaky away from home and with nothing much to play for could = a few goals for MCY this week. I'm currently on C as things stand.

*meant to add that if Aguero comes back firing and looks essential for the DGW, I could always take a hit in GW34 and replace Dzeko. Something like:

                  Gerrard & Dzeko -> Ki & Aguero

Yep, seems like a good analysis, C is a good safe option, the only problem with it is if Aguero explodes, but I doubt many will be able to capitalise on an explosion from Aguero, except for the few brave souls who decide to trust him again.

Hall of Fame update (see HoF tab at the top of the Home page)

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

The Hall of Fame has been updated. (Available to Members – pick the Live version, rather than Career version).

We have a new leader, with Evs slipping slightly in recent weeks. Mark plummets out of the top 100, after being a mainstay of the top 10 in the career version. Granville slumps out of the top 400.

Meanwhile Matt, last year’s winner rockets into the top 100 and current world number one Luke Weston is among the biggest climbers.

The career version is available to all.

Very nice! I'm struggling this season - top 1k pretty much out of the question for me now 🙁

I don't think he'll start vs southampton, bench at the most. What with all this talk of not wanting to be rushed back

He isn't being rushed back? As far as I understood he started training last Friday. 7-8 days of full training after being out for a few weeks. I don't think a start is rushing him back.

Glen Johnson on Sterling; "At the moment, he's probably one of the first names on the teamsheet."

Yep, that's why he didn't start either game in the dgw?

Is anyone going for a triple up of Nasri / Silva / Yaya whilst Kun is still flirting with the bench?

I don't see their defenders getting many points from Southampton or Liverpool games and both of those teams have tended to defend poorly in recent times.

Yaya Silva if Kun is not fit.

Yaya Nasri Kun if he is fit.

Not tempted by the 3 mids?

Yaya and Silva are two of the most in form mids in the game at the moment and have nice attacking fixtures, and Nasri doesn't break the bank offering great value at 8.1...

Just curious to see if anyone is considering it 🙂

I thought about it, but I think I'd rather a striker.

Yaya, Silva, Kun looks the nuts if all are fit. I'm either doing this or

                  Yaya, Silva, Dzeko

The thing with Dzeko is that he takes up a forward spot and, not only do we have less forward spots to play around with, but I think there's a lot more value and consistency to be found in the forwards at the moment than there is in midfield.

ie. Bony / Studge / Suarez / Rooney / Lukaku / Benteke / Dzeko / JRod all fighting for 3 spaces..
Whereas all of the current performing big hitters in midfield are basically City + Hazard.

Arsenal aren't that viable at the moment, Gerrard has his YC dilemma, Mata has a blank..

Fair points, although I think you can add Lallana to the performing mids, and from GW34 onwards I expect at least 1 of the ARS mids (Ramsey/Santi/Ozil) to score well.

Lallana is a curious one for me, I had him most of the season and then shipped him for GW31, reluctant to get him back in as I feel like I've already said goodbye to him haha

Yep if I were to go for the 3 City mids I'd be shipping at least one of them after GW34 to make space for Aguero and possibly an Arsenal mid or Mata..

been thinking it - but I'd rather go with a defender, Hart even Dzeko. Not ruling it out completely though if Aguero takes his time.

            Anyone else keeping koshelny?

Was going to take out , but arsenal over their bad fixtures, might just keep him , could be a good differential over last few weeks, arsenal being chased hard for 4th so will be trying hard

Thinking I'm best to save my FT and then do Mata -> Nasri and either Olsson -> Demichelis or Carroll -> Dzeko with the 2FTs next week.. Would you guys agree?

            Speroni
            Olsson / Chester / Azpil
            Hazard / Silva / Mata / Lallana
            Suarez / Carroll / Lukaku

            Boruc / Distin / AJ / Bardsley

            1FT, 0.8 in the bank
