World Cup 2014

World Cup 2014 – Team Analysis – Cameroon

Having analysed Brazil in the first of our World Cup articles, we now take a look at the rank outsiders in Group A. Cameroon failed to impress during the qualifying stages and, having been thumped 5-1 by Portugal in a friendly match back in March, many are already writing off the Africans side’s chances of making it out of the group and into the knockout stages.

Volker Finke’s side begin their campaign with a clash with Mexico on Friday June 13 at 5pm – perhaps their best opportunity for a victory. Five days later the “Indomitable Lions” square up to Croatia at the later time of 11pm, before they take on hosts Brazil in the final batch of Group A ties on Monday June 23 at 9pm.

Road to Qualification

Cameroon finished top of a four-team qualifying group that included Libya, DR Congo and Togo. They registered four wins and a draw, although one of those victories was after a 2-0 defeat in Togo was overturned due to the hosts fielding an ineligible player, with Cameroon awarded a 3-0 win. Over their remaining five matches, they scored five goals, conceding three and earning three clean sheets. They then went head-to-head with Tunisia for a place in this month’s tournament and, after a goalless first-leg away draw, triumphed 4-1 at home to progress.

Road to Qualification

Most Starts Alex Song, Aurélien Chedjou,Nicolas Nkoulou (7), Jean Makoun, Dany Nounkeu, Eyong Enoh, Carlos Kameni, Benjamin Moukandjo, Joel Matip (5)

Most Goals Jean Makoun, Samuel Eto’o, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (2)

The Key Targets

Fueled by the 1990’s World Cup displays, the popular perception will be that Cameroon may well be a swashbuckling attacking side, spearheaded by Samuel Eto’o. They are actually set up to be a strong defensive unit who will look to retai possession and keep opponents at arm’s length. It’s in attacking terms that they struggle, unlike both Brazil and Croatia, they lack influential playmakers in midfield.

In a side largely bereft of attacking craft, Eto’o remains the star turn. The Chelsea man’s decision to come out of international retirement proved a successful one as his influence helped steer Cameroon through qualifying. There’s no doubt Finke’s side are up against it in Group A but, if they are to prosper, the performance of their veteran striker – who is first-choice penalty taker – will be pivotal.

Finke is expected to deploy a 4-2-3-1 formation, to maximise the power of Alex Song and Enoh Eyong in the engine room. This duo provide ample stability in front of a back four that boasts an established and touted centre-back pairing of Nicolhas N’Koulou and Aurelien Chedjou. That quartet will be tested and could reap plenty of points from recovered balls.

That spine can be further reinforced by Jean Makoun – the Rennes star will likely to be fielded the furthest forward of the central midfield three and will be looking to replicate the attacking form that saw him score twice in the crucial win over Tunisia. Makoun is not a natural “number 10” and Finke is far from blessed in this area. He has other options – notably Schalke’s highly-rated Joel Matip, along with Stéphane Mbia of Seville – both could feature but are imposing defensively minded assets rather than major attacking threats.

The Long Shot

Vincent Aboubakar is likely to get the nod on the right flank of either a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3. He failed to impress over the qualification period and was unable to find the net but he arrives on the back of a highly successful domestic campaign, having netted on 16 occasions for Ligue 1 side Lorient.

        That's his perogitive dude ,
        Here's where I'm at :
Woodward : hi Louis you are a great manager , we like you.

LVG : Hi - yes i am great and I'm glad you like me , what can I do for you sir ?

Woodward : we need a manager with credentials to manage a shower of ungrateful gits , restore pride and order , land transfer targets and guarantee a top 4 finish - building on that from there and you will be assisted by Ryan Giggs

LVG : no problem , it will be easy to oust Liverpool and Arsenal from that Top 4 , Chelsea and City the following year , leave it with me , back me in the market and I will return the Crown Jewels to it's rightful home.

This is why I love that you guys won the FA Cup.

One, you think your squad will magically behind a sensation and thrash teams off the park. Two, Wenger stays and more mediocrity will continue to affect Arsenal.

A lot of disappointment for Arsenal next season. You just about managed 4th again - this time you'll have United back in the fold, Everton will also come back stronger with Martinez. I'd be more worried about your own team than others.

"Winning mentality"? You won a trophy 9 years ago and we all know what happened afterwards.

Honestly, with the 3-4 great signings United are looking to make and a manager who actually knows what he's doing - we'll be back in the top four next season. City, Chelsea and Liverpool aren't going anywhere. Everton, even Spurs as their players begin to gel, will come back stronger.

Wenger might sign what, one world class player (if he manages that) and a few like-for-like replacements (i.e. Sagna)? I really wouldn't be anywhere near as confident as you are.

Instant success doesn't come in terms of trophies, you're right there. Where you're wrong is that while the majority of times it doesn't come, sometimes it does. Plus success is relative, with a few good signings I can see them getting 4th, whether you or United fans would count that as success I don't know

I disagree , that squad win the league 12/13 and that squad lost out on a league in goal differance in 11/12 ,
Granted a few are on the way out but such is life , there will be additions to the squad and I believe a top 4 + is more than achievable.
We have now an established manager that will bring his qualities to the team , he won't tolerate egos (Rivaldo) and will get united back to playing fluent uptempo football , most if this is an easy fix , I remind you that the standard of the premier league isn't all that high when you go outside the top 5/6 teams ,
United dropped silly points (and records) last season to Newcastle / Sunderland / Everton etc , all we need to do is make OT a fortress again and the away form will establish us back in that Top 2/3 , if I were a Liverpool / Arsenal fan I would worry ,
United won't be this bad again - ye have had yere chance.

a few additions? utd need an almost entire new defense, that alone is enough reason to think they might struggle for a while.

then there's the central midfield which is atrocious

& i was responding to the comment about regaining glory, i wasnt talking about fourth (are you an arsenal fan?)

Manchester City and Newcastle are both keen on Stoke captain Ryan Shawcross, 26. The Potters may be tempted by bids of around £12m for the centre-back.

If city buy him, they will be unbeatable in PL

I think the wise decision next season is to stay well clear of United defence until we see how they settle in.

As stated in an earlier post they have lost 3 of their key defenders (Vidic, Evra & Ferdinand) this season. As a result of this I would be surprised if they can bring in at least another CB and LB and have them all gel as a unit that quickly.

No probs kol the main reason I went looking is I had thought he was pretty influential and your synopsis had me second guessing myself.

I'm not sure how good any of these players were in Scotland and I know the Scottish game is close to your heart. The likes of jelavich as well as wanyama and ledley doing relatively well will only be good for the Scottish game imo.

Mccarthy mcarthur naismith maloney mcgeady Davis etc doing well too will also help I reckon.

Ashley cole often gets the best left-back the PL has ever seen tag. All the chelsea fans on my facebook currently doing this.

i would like to make a case for Denis Irwin. 33 goals, 7 PL titles, 3 FA Cups, 1 Champions League and made the PL team of the decade for 92-02.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFmtjuIdL14 as well as penalties and free-kicks he had a mazy dribble and long-range strike in his locker. not to mention his excellent crossing ability

what do we reckon? I think it is a tough call between Cole and Irwin. Irwin has more goals, medals, assists with Cole probably having more clean-sheets and better defensive attributes

I think it depends on your age also, I can only remember the last couple of years of Irwin.

Personally I would say Cole but as a Chelsea fan I am of course biased plus I am 33 so see my point above.

Did Irwin play much for his country? Wasnt he right footed? Did he win the Champs League? Also Ashley Cole's best games have been in the biggest games against the likes of Messi, Ribery and Ronaldo.

if we were doing a Prem League all time XI couldnt Irwin play right back?

I would have caught most of Irwin's United career and he was an Irish national team player. But I can accept bias will come into it, I rank Irwin above Cole but I grew up watching United so I would have seen a lot more of him in some senses. I definitely think he'd be in the top XI and Cole could be there too, I think Carrick is more suggesting that Cole is the only name that's ever mentioned.

in the same way that people say that Messi is the best player ever.

He isnt. but he is the best playing at the moment (apart from Ronaldo but thats another argument) that most people can remember. Not as many saw Zidane at his peak, less saw Maradona and even less saw Pele.

Agree - I've seen Zidane and Maradona in plenty of matches live (on tv) in my day , and boy they were brilliant then ! Hard to split those - differant styles but equally class , I was only a kid when Pele was about and some of the footage we have is poor , but we know the talent he was and still probably the best of them all when everything is taken into account.

Agreed HVT very hard to say who is/was the best.

except Pele didnt play in Europe which I think is a huge minus.

Yea Pele in a modern day " HD ready " scenario would be easy to analyse but unfortunately we ain't got that privalage so we've gotta rely on older commentators / older footage but my recollection of him and mostly my father was that Pele was out of this world when it came to soccer.

Always loved watching Zidane but don't ever recall thinking he was as good as Maradona.

The only players I have seen play that I have ever thought were as good as Maradona or might be one day were the fat Ronaldo and Messi. For the record I would say Messi is on a par with Maradona and may surpass him if he has a brilliant WC this year.

However, it is hard to say who the best player was as it is so subjective. The best you can probably do is compare players with others who played their position.

Sir Alex ferguson stated once that pound for pound Denis Irwin was the best signing he ever made , Irwin once marked Niall Quinn in a Gaelic Football match in Croke Park !

The main problem with your q Carrick is that some here ( through no fault of their own ) wouldn't actually have seen Irwin in the flesh , whereas Cole is very much part if the modern set up.

Irwin for me definitely. The ultimate professional and great big game temperament, I don't remember him ever letting his team down.

Cole was flashy with his pace when running but typical of the modern footballer he didn't have a great footballing brain and didn't have the best end product imo.

Having seen Scolari at close hand at Stamford Bridge I probably am better than him 😉 I think Brazil will either win it despite him or implode because of him!

Dropped off at Santos. I think there's a particular window in which Brazilian talent needs to experience the rest of the footballing world, he never seemed to take the risk and it has cost him. He still has time on his side but he looks like he entirely lost any ability to even run at Santos. Very disappointed, similar to Pato except he made the transition to Europe and then, inexplicably, decided to go back to Brazil.

I'm pretty sure his record at Milan was nearly 1 in every 2 games? I think it's a little less, maybe 0.4 a game but I definitely can understand he was wasteful. So much potential though.

I love the world cup but I hate the coverage. I wish Eurosport would cover it with neutral commentators.

Did you know it was only 8 minutes into the FA cup final this year that 1966 was mentioned. Also, using some quick math 1966 was 48 years ago.....

I remember one world cup there was an option on BBC (red button maybe) to remove the Commentary and just have crowd noise or have radio 5 live commentary. I used this feature a lot. Think it might have been south africa. Vuvuzela > crappy commentary

ITV commentators are a lot worse than BBC tho

I'm lloking at Spurs of Poch goes there. Apparently Lloris wants out so we could get a cheap GK. Also looking at Rose and maybe Chireches could be a cheap rejuvenated option

I'd say rose will defo be classed as a defender this year but the standout def option at spurs will surely be Verthongen? all he seems to have to do is tog out and put some gel in his hair to earn bps

I hope he does get moved but would not be so sure as they did not move Michu this season.

Verthonghen would be great if his price comes down but not fancying him at 7M.

Michu is an attacking midfielder that was asked to cover up front though that is the difference, I never thought there was much of a chance of Michu being re-classified same as there was little chance of Rooney getting classed as a midfielder after playing midfield for saf.

I reckon vert could be down to 6m after their efforts last season and while it would still be tough to accommodate him at this price if Pochetino/another top coach was there it would be easier.

He would certainly be more appealing at 6M but would probably still opt for Chiriches if he is nailed on and 5M but would probably upgrade later in the season.

True I guess when budgets are tight these are the positions we tend to trade down. I think we could have some very interesting options in spurs depending on who takes over. Due to their poor season last year I think we'll get some real fpl value.

Funny u mention Southampton (I'm stating obvious) but an agent of one of their sought after players (Lallana I'm guessing) has said he's waiting on what happens with other players in squad & manager before deciding on what to do...... So yes, Spurs could be good options from Def & attack point of view

Yeah I think the same with the England v Italy game being the hardest to call imo. If England play costs rica last knowing they need to best Italy/Uruguay's result v them then it would be a huge advantage and could swing it their way.
