World Cup 2014 – Team Analysis – Honduras

Our analysis of Group E continues this morning as we cast an eye over rank outsiders, Honduras. Luis Fernando Suarez’ side square up to group favourites France in their opener on Sunday June 15 at 5pm, then go head-to-head with Ecuador five days later at 11pm before taking on Switzerland on Wednesday June 25 at 9pm:

Road to Qualification

Suarez’ side progressed through a couple of qualifying groups before clinching their place in next month’s tournament. They topped a four-team group containing Panama, Canada and Cuba by winning three and drawing two of their six matches and made their way into the final CONCACAF group, which contained USA, Costa Rica, Mexico, Panama and Jamaica. Finishing third, they scored 13 times and conceded 12, with the highlights a home win over the US and a a 2-1 triumph in Mexico helping to secure their passage for the second successive World Cup.

Most StartsNoel Valladares, Roger Espinoza (10), Victor Bernardez, Oscar Garcia, Luis Garrido, Carlo Costly (9), Maynor Figueroa, Emilio Izaguirre, Arnold Peralta (7), Wilson Palacios, Jerry Bengston (6)

Most Goals Carlo Costly, Jerry Bengston (4)

Most Assists Roger Espinoza (3)

The Key Targets

Suarez side tend to set up in a 4-4-2 formation, with the occasional switch to a 4-4-1-1 offering a tactical alternative. The Hondurans took on Brazil in a friendly last November and, having opted to go on the offensive, were hammered 5-0 – a result that will merely re-enforce their defensively-minded tactics and should ensure they will sit deep and hit their opponents on the counter. Since then, they’ve drawn with 2-2 with Ecuador and beaten Venezuela before losing against Turkey earlier this week.

Fantasy managers will be understandably dubious over their prospects, though in Celtic’s Emilio Izaguirre, the Hondurans have a player in very strong form. The left-back – who is available for 5.0 in FantasyiTeam, served up 12 assists in 2013/14 for the Scottish champions and is afforded plenty of attacking license for his country. Izaguirre is the standout option amongst a backline which also contains Rangers’ Arnold Peralta, Hull’s Maynor Figueroa (utilised as a centre-half) and Victor Bernardez, with the Rangers defender the cheapest of that trio in FantasyiTeam at 4.6.

Further up the field, Wigan’s Roger Espinoza (4.7 in FantasyiTeam) will tuck in on the left flank, allowing Izaguirre to bomb forward, whilst Luis Garrido and Stoke’s Wilson Palacios offer plenty of protection to the back-four by sitting deep and covering for overlapping full-backs. The latter two are available for 5.0 and 5.1 respectively in FantasyiTeam but offer little in the way of attacking potential to justify investment. Both Garrido and right winger Oscar Garcia missed the recent friendly against Turkey due to injury but the pair are expected to be fit in time for the opener with France – Garcia will set you back 4.8 in FantasyiTeam and a move to a 4-4-1-1 could see him shifted off the flank and into the role in “the hole” behind a lone frontman.

Carlo Costly and Jerry Bengston, who come in at 6.8 and 6.7 respectively FantasyiTeam, will lead the line in a 4-4-2, though the latter looks more likely to retain his spot in the XI if Suarez moves to a lone forward set-up. Both players notched four goals apiece in the second qualifying group, though Costly – who also scored twice in the recent friendly draw with Ecuador – started nine times compared to Bengston’s six. Both France and Switzerland have impressed at the back of late, though, suggesting the Ecuador game may be the only source of attacking returns.

The Long Shots

Anderlecht’s Andy Najar is by no means a guaranteed starter but could benefit from either injuries or a change in tactics. The 21-year-old, who is regarded as the big hope of Honduran football, deputised for the stricken Garcia on the right against the Turks and could retain the role if the latter fails to recover in time. Alternatively, a tactical switch to 4-1-4-1 would see Espnoza move into the midfield four and hand Najar – priced at 4.8 in FantasyiTeam – the chance to shine.

Is Luke Shaw worth £30m (well £25m plus Buttner apparently) ❓

No but if he gives us 10 years of service at LB then he'll be a bargain.

Not a bargain, a fair deal. Imo, you are paying it as if the success was guaranteed. You are paying for those 10 years of top LB, price for only the potential would also have risk counted and that would lower the price significantly. Something like £10M could be it.

But I understand perfectly well why that price is so high. So'ton can do some excellent business right now. Their players' prices are probably highest they will be as long as they stay in Southampton. It's a wise moment to cash on them, as long as they have already good enough plans of how to replace them with less money.

well if the get £25m plus Buttner, that's a good deal IMO. A good fee for such a young player and they're getting a replacement thrown in.

No. Probably about 15M of that is paid only for the potential so it can't be said he's worth it. It's a gamble and I would even say that it's very likely that the gamble will not be a complete success and a couple of years from now he's still not worth 30M.

But paying big money for potential is kinda like buying a lottery ticket so of course there's a chance he'll be worth 30M or even more for many many many years and the deal will be a great success.

And I really like Shaw, actually.

So, you're saying that he is at the moment, as the player he is now, worth £20M?

I'd say that about £30M of that is for the potential. And at this point that is too much for a full back.

I'm saying he's at the moment worth 15M, although I do agree with you. A bit of that is still because of the potential and a lot of that is because of his nationality. I also agree that for a full back the price is quite crazy.

So, the consensus is that Liverpool will struggle to repeat the feats of last season as their squad is shallow and European participation will hurt them. Does the signing of the following help in this matter?:

    Moreno: 16 mill plus Suso
    Lallana: 25 mill
    Lambert: 4 mill
    Lovren: 15 mill
    Vorm: 3 mill
Caulker: 8 mill release clause (yes, Cardiff were that stupid)

My post from the DZ last night:

      Ben Smith ‏@BenSmithBBC 57s
Brendan Rodgers also hopeful of signing Alberto Moreno, Dejan Lovren and Emre Can in the next fortnight.

Like I've said they're good signings but I feel they could've done with 1 top defensive signing and 1 top midfield signing and then filled up the squad with some depth which is what they're doing.

Like you say, Moreno is a great prospect and I expect him to be a good signing (although 20m euros seems quite steep) whereas for Can I have my reservations. Think he will do alright but wouldn't classify him as a "great" prospect and will only be a slight improvement on the likes of Allen/Lucas.

Lovren again is a good signing but he's arguably not much better than either Skrtel or Sakho and definitely not Agger IMO.

All in all, it's good transfer business and they definitely need the squad as they wouldn't be able to cope with any injuries which will undoubtedly come due to fixture congestion but, all in all, I think a top signing or 2 are necessary. Of course we are still on the "gossip" level and no actual business has been done so we'll just have to wait and see how it pans out.

This isn't just a Liverpool thing by the way. Look at the majority of the players United, Chelsea, City, Spurs, etc. Have bought in recent times. It's a theme. Not sure if they have to pay a premium because of who they are or our minds just can't keep up with football's inflation.

People often say English players are overlooked but if anything it seems like being English bumps up your transfer fee. Dalglish's signings being the most extreme example of that

Meanwhile, Spanish youngsters come here for a few mill...

Going on a previous post a few days back with how Southampton could line up next year, what's the general consensus on Liverpool?

If (& big IF) they buy these players, are they first teamers or just bulking up squad (which is obvious)? FPL assets? Or avoid?...

I mean you're looking at (at a guess for first team in big matches & champions league)

    Mignolet
    Johnson, Agger, Caulker, Enrique
    Gerrard,Henderson,
    Sterling, Suarez, Lallana
    Sturridge

Then when they're in 'smaller' match's?

    Mignolet
    Flanagan, Skrtel, Lovren, Moreno
    Henderson,
    Lallana,
    Sterling, Cortinho, Suarez,
    Lambert

I really dont know, I'm no Liverpool expert, it's just a thought aloud & wouldn't mind hearing from people more in the know.....

For big matches Sakho would start before Agger at least and I'm guessing Agger might be leaving. I actually don't really know how good Caulker is so I don't know if they're planning him for the starting eleven or what but the rumour is that Agger doesn't play with Sakho because they're both left-footed, so I think the idea is to get a partner for Sakho.

The attacking half is difficult to predict because I think it will be changed mainly based on the opponent. So it's not so clearly cut who plays against big teams and who plays against small teams but will be mainly altered based on the tactics used. I do think Lallana will start most games in some role at least. Sturridge, Suarez and Henderson will start of course.... this season's Gerrard as well but I guess he will have to be rotated to some extent next season.

This is very sensible, plausible analysis of Liverpool situation. Isn't Caulker right footer? Would work with Sakho.

But frankly, if Agger stays, I don't think you need another CB. There's Coates and that Ilori guy coming back and if you don't sell them, you should at least trust them as 4th and 5th CB's. These are excellent individual players and you should rather have stability than renew that central defence every single year. It's always the most difficult place to adapt to in a new team and league.

CB is indeed a difficult position to adapt to and I have somewhat mixed feelings about the situation. It does seem clear that Agger won't be playing with Sakho and I don't think Skrtel is good enough (I think we were lucky with him not picking up penalties and cards last season) so I suppose we do need a new CB.

I personally have liked Coates on the national team but it doesn't seem like he's playing under ANY manager so I'm starting to think he may have some problems outside the field. I've pretty much lost hope with him ever playing as a regular Liverpool starter and I would guess he's heading out as well.

Ilori will get better but he's not ready to be a starter yet and it's difficult to predict when he will be.
