World Cup 2014 – Team Analysis – Nigeria

The final team in our Group F analysis is the African representatives, Nigeria. Stephen Keshi’s side kick off their campaign against fellow outsiders Iran on Monday June 16 at 8pm before taking on Bosnia and Herzegovina five days later at 11pm, prior to a showdown with group favourites Argentina on Wednesday June 25 at 5pm:

Road to Qualification

The Nigerians topped a four-team group that also included Malawai, Kenya and Namibia by five clear points. Scoring seven times and conceding just three, they were then drawn against Ethiopia in a two-legged play-off last autumn and cruised through by an aggregate 4-1 scoreline, having emerged victorious both home and away.

Most Starts Vincent Enyeama, Godfrey Oboabona (8), Efe Ambrose (7), Victor Moses, Elderson Echiejile, John Obi Mikel, Ogenyi Onazi (6), Ahmed Musa (5)

Most Goals Emmanuel Emenike (3), Victor Moses (2)

The Key Targets

Since clinching their qualification, Nigeria have won the 2014 African Nations Championship – a tournament predominantly for players plying their trade in their native continent – and drawn a trio of international friendlies. A 2-2 draw against Italy back in November caught the eye, with a goalless stalemate against Mexico preceding last week’s draw with Scotland, where many of the squad’s fringe players were given a chance to impress. The Africans will also be looking to improve upon their performances in last year’s Confederations Cup, where a 6-1 win over Tahiti was followed by back-to-back defeats at the hands of Italy and Uruguay.

Tactically, Keshi’s side are set up in a 4-3-3 formation, with the pace of the wide players in a front three key to their counter attacking ploys. Between the posts, Vincent Enyeama is nailed-on. The Lille stopper arrives on the back of some outstanding domestic displays and racked up clean sheets aplenty in Ligue 1 – available for 4.9 in FantasyiTeam he can expected to be called into action time and again.

Efe Ambrose and Elderson Echiejile (5.0 and 5.1 in FantasyiTeam) are the first-choice full-backs. Ambrose is a regular for Celtic and played 38 times in the league, whereas Echiejile featured just five times for French outfit Monaco after moving during the January transfer window and will perhaps be a little lacking in match sharpness. At the heart of the back-four, Chelsea youngster Kenneth Omeruo looks set to partner Godfrey Oboabona, (4.9 in FantasyiTeam) though Joseph Yobo was recalled to the squad in March and offers a more experienced alternative.

Keshi will have two sitting midfielders in front of his defence, looking to break up the opponents’ attacking forays and quickly distribute the ball to the attacking quartet. Lazio’s Ogenyi Onazi (5.2 in FantasyiTeam) seems odds-on to grab one of the places and with John Obi Mikel (priced at 5.1) fielded in the most advanced role of the midfield trio, the remaining defensive slot could go to Ramon Azeez, who played 30 times in La Liga for Osasuna last term.

Further up the field, the trickery and speed of Victor Moses and Ahmed Musa are pivotal to the Nigerian’s penchant for quick transitions. Despite a lack of game time on loan at Liverpool, Moses is regarded as key for Keshi’s side and is number one spot-kick taker – giving him the edge over CSKA Moscow’s Musa, who scored seven times in the Russian top-flight in 2013/14. Moses is the cheaper of the pair, coming in at 5.3 to his fellow wide man’s 5.4 in FantasyiTeam.

Through the middle, Emmanuel Emenike is a man in form and arrives on the back of a season which saw him produce 12 goals and nine assists in 28 appearances for Turkish side Fenerbahce. Available for 6.8 in FantasyiTeam, he missed all but three of the qualifying matches due to injury, yet still finished top scorer with three strikes to his name.

The Long Shots

Back in the squad after repairing relationships with Keshi following a public row at the start of last year, Peter Odemwingie could offer the Nigerians a number of alternatives. Utilised mainly on the right at Stoke, he finished the season with five goals and a pair of assists in his final nine league appearances – Odemwingie (6.7 in FantasyiTeam) could also be fielded through the middle up front or in “the hole”, if Keshi wishes to drop Mikel into a more defensive-minded role.

Watching SKY news discussing the bribery allegations and the new revelations in tomorrow's papers about payments made by Qatar to FIFA officials. The line "If Qatar get the world cup taken off them" was used by the commentator, a common phrase of late. Do people not understand..exactly who is empowered to take the World Cup off Qatar ?..

      Fifa.

They are the ones who can call a revote, which I suspect is allowed if misconduct/fraud has occurred.

You mean the same FIFA who have taken the bribes in the first place...Tomorrow's papers include stories of gifts made directly to Sepp Blatter...This is going to end up a right old mess with a lot of vested interests at FIFA.

          They have a choice,

Lose all integrity, granted they don't have much as it is

          Or,

Rectify themselves and revote on the remaining candidates from the 2018 & 2022 bids.

Note that Russia would also require a revote as this was part of the same corrupt process.

    @ ELNINORULES

Can I ask a question regarding the WC Tournament? Am I right in saying we set up the teams by nominating our team members to each position of GK, D, DM, AM and S? What I do not get is why it is important to select the players in each position? We will not know what way our opposition will line out their team so it becomes a complete lottery? So there is no strategy to picking our team and could just do it completely randomly and end up with the same result?

I have probably picked this up completely wrong but if there is more to it can you please explain it so I can do the best I can with my team. Thanks.

Dont get me wrong still think its a great idea but I think I may have picked it up wrong.

You pick the 5 positions for your team without knowing about your rivals team.
It's suppose to be a lottery over knowing who each position is as the other team would just change theirs in return if they knew who you were targeting etc.

Including the Goalie? I read differently, but I may be wrong..

"Each team decides on its formation before every matchday (who plays in what position)
Goalkeeper position is fixed throughout the cup. The remaining positions are dynamic."

The idea behind making the positions interchangable from week to week was to stimulate the banter among posters on the site...

We believe that dynamic positioning will increase the banter around lineups announcement, with rumors/hype creation, mind games etc while involving some strategy in fixing the goalkeeper positions.

Repost to open this up for the Deadzone:

You've seen the pleas from all the rest. Here's your chance to join the best.

Team USA is putting a Dream Team together for the Fantasy World Cup. I already have these guys on board:

    Little Dancer - one of only two guys on the planet to have won back to back UEFA team championships and be gunning for the Threepeat;

    Koneheads - defending Beach Soccer champion and our Golden Boot winner, top 1K in FPL;

Philman - defending Beach Soccer champion, #14 in FFS members league.

We need one more player to fill the roster. If you think you have what it takes to go for the cup email me at ffs.shadow@aol.com

As the boys in red landed in Brazil, crowds of determined news reporters swarmed the team like the plague. Pushing our way through masses of cameramen and women, the squad were allowed a short rest as they hopped aboard their VIP limousine, en route to their luxurious 5 star hotel.

Once the team had arrived, the Chilean captain, Innsie, sat down for his first press conference, as the rest of the lads had a chance to put their feet up before the first of many intense training sessions began tomorrow. Here's a snippet of the press conference:

REPORTER: First of all, welcome to Brazil.

INNSIE: Thankyou. I'm delighted to be here and I'm looking forward to the World Cup and the hospitality we have been provided with.

REPORTER: What are your goals and aspirations for the World Cup? What can we expect from Chile?

INNSIE: Our main goal as a team is to provide aesthetically-pleasing, entertaining football that brings people off their feet. We have many team-bonding exercises planned and I'm confident that our cohesion as a group off the field will result in quality football on it. If the team is playing how I want, results will follow. With regards to how far we will go, who knows. We're in a tough group but if we can manage to advance from it, the sky is our limit. We're quietly confident, to say the least.

REPORTER: You mentioned that you're in a tough group - many people are labelling it the 'Group of Death'. What are your thoughts on Group B?

INNSIE: It is obviously a very tough group. Spain have some world class players, as do Holland. Australia? I can't say I know much about them. We have to be careful not to underestimate the opposition. We will have to show them plenty of respect.

REPORTER: What can you share about Chile's tactics for the World Cup? Do you have any tricks up your sleeve? Will there be mind games with the other captains?

INNSIE: That information stays within the camp. We know we have a job to do and we want to make the people back home proud and I'm sure we will do that.

    REPORTER: Thankyou for your time.

*The team at Chile would like to thank our team translator, Miguel Jimenez, for helping with the press conference.*

Former Fulham captain Brede Hangeland says he was "immensely disappointed" to be informed that his contract with the Cottagers was being cancelled via email rather than in person.

He was under contract until 2015.

"I was told of this decision via email," he said in a statement.

"This was without anyone from the club having met me beforehand to discuss my contract or my future with the club."

"After six and a half years of hard work and loyalty, and having served the last few years as captain, I am immensely disappointed at how this was handled."

"I believe I still have much to offer as a footballer and look forward to the next chapter in my career."

    --

Fulham, responded to Hangeland's comments by tweeting: "The club would like to clarify that all personal protocol was followed and that Brede Hangeland was notified in the right way.

I'd have said Ecuador, but their pre-WC has been rusty at best. Plus, injuries to a couple of top players haven't helped their cause.
And Honduras, they look a complete no-go.

So, you'd have to go for France and Switzerland. Hell, Switzerland might even top the group!

I fancy Switzerland to top the group. They have a decent squad of players this top around and they are quite capable of beating the likes of France I believe. I think the runner up spot could be between Ecuador and France and it will be very close. I wouldn't be too surprised if the French went out along with arguably the weakest team in the group, Honduras.

Assuming that Diego Costa does not get fit for the WC, I think they will revert back to the tried-and-tested 4-6-0 with Fabregas as the false nine.

That's actually a better system given the other strikers they have.

It is just a week before WC 2014 begins, and I'm so bored that I haven't been able to create a Fantasy team. So, I've taken some of your words, and I've chosen Fox Australia as my second game (apart from McDonald's). It is simple, and looks almost like FPL.

So, this is the team I've managed to come with.

    Courtois, Davari,
    Pique, Blind, Debuchy, Lichsteiner, Aurier,
Muller, de Bruyne, Rodriguez, Valbeuna, Pjanic,
    Ronaldo, Neymar, Lukaku.

Looks like the prices are reasonable, and I can make a decent team out of it.
    What do you think?

Is KDB that good with the national team? I know he got the stats before, but WC could be a different ball game, and you're doubling up with Lukaku. I'd lose 1 of them.

I don't fancy Lukaku to do well to be honest. I'd go for Jackson Martinez who should be cheaper provided that he's nailed on. I sincerely hope Muller and Robben/Ribery for that matter are classed as mids for the McDonald's game. I really wish they'd make the game available sooner rather than later.

D.Alves Alba Godin (De Sciglio Kolasinac)
      Reus Shaqiri Valbuena Vidal (Cuadrado)
      Messi Neymar(c) Sanchez
