KPI Forwards Analysis – 2013/14 Downturn

After analysing the Most Improved forwards of 2013/14 in accordance with our KPI (Key Performance Indicators) members tables, we now cast an eye over those strikers who suffered a drop in frequency across a number of attacking areas:

For the unfamiliar, these Key Performers Indicator (KPI) tables are designed to use a series of key stats to allow our members to track form or change in player performance. By tracking the frequency of certain key statistics and comparing over two separate periods of time, we can ascertain each player’s form, whether it be an improvement or decrease in displays on the pitch. As mentioned in last summer’s introductory article, we’ve rolled out a preview movie which shows just how to get the best out of the KPI tables.

For the purpose of this series of articles, we analyse the previous two seasons as a means of comparison. The players featured must have started at least 10 league games and are listed according to frequency of goals on target.

What type of midfielder is he? Does he attack much or is it mostly the defensive role? If defensive then he should get plenty of points as I think Argentina will attack a lot.

Then there is a good chance he will get a few points for recovered balls, blocks etc. Holland should be on the defensive a lot more than they were against Costa Rica.

Keeping Wijnaldum on the bench since my lowest scorer at the moment in starting 11 in Gustavo with 7 points.

    Good move?

Currently holding a 60 points lead in ML.

Also, captain Messi should be safe right? Or go with Mr. Consistent Mascherano?

leading my group by ~30 points.

have cillessen, de vrij, roco, mascherano, robben, messi.

who to captain? thinking mascherano is the safest play, but going robben or messi is kind of safe because i reckon lots of the guys chasing me are going with them too.

Was David Luiz's performance last night the worst ever performance by a footballer? I don't mean in absolute terms but when you take into account the situation.

Captaining his country (the world's most revered international team of all time ) in the World Cup semi final with his country as hosts against the second most revered international team of all time. In a record loss. And he is prancing around the pitch at left wing, right wing, etc and switching off letting the opposition score 7 (seven) goals!

    Or am I being harsh?

He looked good going forward on occasion but he is a defender. And he didn't do his job either as a defender or as a captain. The quote about him looking like he was being controlled by a PlayStation controller in the stand (whoever said that) was so apt last night.

It really isn't. There is no argument for him having a reasonable performance. Other than you 'reading the game' differently to pretty much every other person watching the match.

Actually, ZonalMarking's Michael Cox picks Luiz out as the only Brazilian making positively things happen:

"David Luiz’s performance has received most criticism, which is natural considering he was the captain, and he completely lost his head after half-time. But in the first half he was the only Brazilian making things happen. Passes into the midfield zone simply weren’t an option, so it was entirely natural that he hit accurate long balls, and attempted to dribble forward.

He hit some excellent long diagonals to the left, usually to Hulk, and went on a couple of mazy runs, which worked nicely as Germany were effectively man-marking in midfield, so this forced someone to leave their man and stop David Luiz."

take your head out of ur ass mate.. i couldnt care less who michael cox is and what his opinion is because he like others will go against what the overwhelming public see and think only to be controversial... david luiz was brazils captain and last line of defence in a team that shipped seven goals he isnt in that team to make things happen hes there to stop them happening. save the put downs and at least come back at me with a valid argument as to why u think luizs performance was reasonable and maybe ur own opinion as opposed to some copy and pasted write up from some one else

Michael Cox has given Luiz credit for his attacking intent in an otherwise appallingly uncreative Brazil side. That does not in any way mean that his defensive performance was acceptable. Which is exactly what I have been saying.

You have been defending the slating of his performance as the worst in the world. Cox has pointed Luiz's playmaking performance out, while also noting that Marcelo was faulty of Brazil's early fall, by letting German's roam on his side. You could add that the DM's played themselves out in many German attacks (think of 2-0 in particular), also gifting the ball to Kroos in 4-0, exposing Dante and Luiz completely.

Nobody is saying that Luiz had a good match. We are just saying that he was far from being the worst on the pitch. Let alone worst ever.

Well is an overstatement but so is the "worst ever performance". There have been worse, to start with every other Brazilian player in the match. Marcelo was the worst by some distance, not that they hadn't lost it anyway, but that Germany got that massive early lead was largely his fault.

That he wasn't able to lead a defence where he was actually the least experienced player (note: the others should not be completely headless even without a leader), doesn't make his individual player performance worse than those monkeys around him. i'm not saying he was good. I called it before the match that they are unable to fill that leadership vacuum Silva left behind him:

"I don't think either Dante or Luiz can step up to that role. Between a big pile of meat with a wacky afro and a sideshow bob running like a headless chicken, which one would you like to see organizing your defence? Neither? Yeah, I thought so."

I think there are players that lead and those that follow.

Luiz is a player that works best when following imo. With no Tiago Silva beside him, the entire defensive organisation rested on his shoulders, which imo he sucks at organising. Maicon was all over the place, Luiz was all over the place, the whole team was over the place. At one point Fred lost the ball in Brazil's third of the pitch and Luiz was at the centre spot.

He's used to having leaders beside him(Terry and Silva),not being THAT guy.

Quite harsh. Maicon and Dante were really exposed throughout the game and Marcello had no clue what to do. Yes, he did make some decent runs but lets face it, he is a pathetic defender and knows nothing about defending.

But yes, the main blame here goes to Brazil defenders who conceded so many goals in a span of 10 minutes and made it impoossible for the attackers to even think about a come back against such a monster score.

Yeah, had Marcelo learned to stay back after he was exposed some 4 times in first 7-8 minutes, the match could have still been 0-0 at 25 minutes.

And how about those overaggressive DM's Gustavo and Fernandinho, missing their tackles to leave space behind them that Luiz and Dante were practically forced to fill.

And nobody is even mentioning the so called "attacking" players. Such as Fred. Perhaps because they were nowhere to be seen, but unlike for defenders, to attackers that is not a compliment.

not harsh at all... hes a very talented footballer but should never ever be used as a last line of defence... anyone trying to defend that performance in any way is doing so only to be controversial and go against those who were watching the tv for 90 mins rather than writing and reading posts on here for the duration of the match therefore spending a large portion of the game staring at a laptop or phone.. an utterly shambolic performance and what makes it all the more embarrassing is the captains armband he was wearing.

Luiz makes the mistake of using too much emotion and getting carried away. All that bollocks with Neymar's shirt looks like his idea. Definitely a playstation footballer last night.

The thinkg is I don't even think he was the worst. Fernandinho was terrible, absolutely terrible, and Marcello went missing time and time again. Oscar lightweight, Maicon past it, Paulinho no talent, and Gustavo a ten a penny footballer. As for Fred, well they might as well have just put Neymar's shirt up top.

the main problem here is comparing this Brazil with the historical Brazillian teams. ie. most revered. Its akin to comparing the current AC MIlan team to that which has gone before. The current team were being given too much praise before last night, they had been very lucky to get this far. Luiz was terrible but in all fairness to him he had been playing well up until last night. personally, i have always thought he has been over-rated. He got found out on a grand scale last night, nowherw to hide and he failed miserably

Hey can I get a quick couple answers for McD? About to head into a meeting..

    A) Gustavo (7) out for Mascherano? I think so..can't imagine Mascherano gets less than 7 unless he does something stupid
    B) Take a chance on Depay in for Klose (7)? I'm top of all my leagues but dropped to just outside the top 2k and probably should take a chance?
    C) Who to cap out of Sneijder, Masch, or Higuain (or Depay if I bring him in). Thinking Sneijder..

    thanks everyone 🙂

Netherlands and Germany have been the two most organized teams in the World Cup, showing their flexible systems throughout. Both teams have had games where they nearly capitulated due to being complacent and both have had their games where they completely outclassed their opponents.

Argentina, like Brazil, are full of holes and have no business playing in the World Cup final if you ask me. The world's best player and a potent set of attackers that they can't even field all at the same time aside, Argentina have been pretty toothless facing far weaker opposition than Netherlands and barely skating by time and again with last gasp goals, never winning a game by more than a goal. Let's not forget that they're also missing one of their better performers of the tournament in Di Maria, even if he seemed to have left his shooting boots in Madrid.

Anything can happen in a World Cup knockout match, let alone a semi-final, but logic and rational states that it is Argentina who is up against it, not Netherlands.

I've gone for the Argies but I now have a very nasty feeling that they will be found out. Perhaps last night had something to do with it.
