World Cup 2014 – Scout Notes – Matchday 7, Day 1

Holland clinch third place in the 2014 World Cup after a comfortable 3-0 win over hosts Brazil. Robin Van Persie nets his fourth goal of the tournament, whilst Daley Blind and Georginio Wijnaldum also find the net in Louis Van Gaal’s final match in charge:

Van Persie Back in the Goals
Despite a series of poor displays over the knockout stages, the United striker kept his role in the starting XI last night. Louis Van Gaal made just two changes to his line-up, bringing in Jordy Clasie and Jonathan de Guzman for Wesley Sneijder and Nigel de Jong in the centre of the park, with Georginio Wijnaldum tucking in behind Van Persie and Arjen Robben up top.

Having failed to net since Matchday 2, the United man quickly rediscovered his scoring touch against the beleaguered hosts. An early foul on Arjen Robben allowed Van Persie the chance to fire home an excellent spot-kick and take his tally to four for the tournament – level with Lionel Messi and Neymar and eclipsing Robben’s total of three for the Dutch. Elsewhere amongst the attackers, Sneijder’s absence proved beneficial to Wijnaldum. Previously utilised as part of the central midfield four, a move to a more advanced role allowed the PSV man to grab his first goal of the campaign in the latter stages of the match and afford us a decent differential for last night’s encounter.

Blind Delivers Again
Handed a role on the left of the midfield four, the versatile Ajax man served up the points at both ends of the pitch last night to justify our Fantasy faith. Blind’s first-half strike took his attacking returns to a goal and three assists over seven appearances, whilst his 70th-minute withdrawal still afforded owners a fourth clean sheet of the campaign – last night’s result means Holland conceded just a single goal in their final five fixtures of Van Gaal’s tenure, providing Fantasy managers with points aplenty over the tournament.

Brazil End With a Whimper
Thiago Silva’s return from suspension made little difference as the demoralised hosts were taken apart again. Phil Scolari made six changes from the side that were beaten 7-1 by Germany but the Brazil defence once again let down its Fantasy owners – the 3-0 win means they managed a single clean sheet over seven matches and conceded an incredible 14 goals. The likes of Willian, Ramires and Jo were handed starts further up the pitch but made little impact and, since losing Neymar to injury, Brazil have managed a single goal in two matches in a dire end to the tournament.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, Stefan de Vrij was top performer for recovered balls amongst the Dutch with an impressive 13, followed by Jordy Clasie (five) and Daley Blind (four). For Brazil, the back-four were the main men – Thiago Silva managed six, with David Luiz on five and Maxwell and Maicon next in line on three apiece.

    Mr. Inconsistent - Edin Hazard

    Points per GW: 3 5 3 1 3 2 8 1̲8 2 2 1̲3 1̲0 2 1̲7 2 5 3 1̲0 1̲0 6 8 2 3 3 2̲1 2 3 1̲0 9 2 8 2 1 0 0 0 1 2

    .
8 double figure hauls helped him break the 200pt mark. Outside the double figure hauls he's scored quite poorly. A risky captain.

There was an FFS article 2-3 years ago that analysed the benefits of picking consistent point scorers over explosive ones. Given this, his likely inflated price tag, and the strength of midfield alternatives available, are you going to be starting FPL 14/15 with Mr. Hazard?

Good point, I'm not sure. There are some 8s/9s in there too but still that's only 12/38 decent scores, one in three. Will depend whether Yaya stays, Ramsey's preseason form etc. If there's room at the inn I'll pick him.

A few possible changes to the scoring system in FPL (although I don't really expect many, if any, of them to happen this season). These are slightly different from the ones I suggested yesterday.

    1. Only 6 bonus points per match. If two or more players tie for 3, 2 or 1 bonus points then separate them by using other statistics as differentiators.

    2. Goalkeepers to get 5 points for a clean sheet. This would benefit goalkeepers from teams with strong defences who don't get the chance to make so many saves as goalkeepers playing behind weaker defences.

    3. 1 point awarded for every 5 recovered balls or blocks. This would compensate defenders for points lost due to the reduction in their bonus points, and would also give some reward to defensive midfielders, but without distorting everything as in McD's.

    4. 1 point awarded for every 2 big scoring chances created that do not count as assists (including winning unconverted penalties). This should help creative midfielders.

    5. Shots that hit the woodwork NOT to count as misses and therefore score negative BPS.

However, as TW remarked yesterday, FPL ain't very broke, so there is no great urgency to fix it!

Why give more points to defensive mids? By their very nature they aren't good footballers. They are there to stop the better players.
If you buy one he will be cheap, and if you can buy one that scores points you will have an advantage on other fantasy managers.

Some of them are good footballers, such as Mascherano at the World Cup. And Jedinak probably deserved a few more points than he got last season.

Defenders and goalkeepers are also there to stop attacking players.

I mentioned other day about Arsenal & Remy not agreeing on personal terms, here's what seems to be the reason:

Loic Remy’s move to Arsenal is in doubt due to the striker’s £80,000-a-week salary. Arsene Wenger’s side are prepared to pay QPR’s £10 million asking price but not match the France international’s salary.

*NEW AND UPDATED INCLUDING ALEXIS SANCHEZ*

I did this last summer and it went down well so I'm doing it again. It's an analysis of the points per game of the new players in the Premier League. It is for their old clubs and leagues so it has limitations but it is still helpful for you hopefully. More info is on the first sheet. I will be updating it regularly and posting the new link as more players arrive.

    Check it out here:

So I know I am in the minority when it comes to wanting to see excellent passers/holding mids rewarded with points in FPL but does no-one else get bored of just having number 10s/set-piece takers as their midfielders?

I understand everyone wants simplicity but too simple eventually becomes stupid. The way midfields work has changed in the past 10 years since the 442 was the norm.

its 38 weeks of managing injuries, checkin lineups, stats for key passes etc, avoidin bandwagons, jumpin on bandwagons, playing the price market. Its not simple! try and enter the top 1000 every season mate. its not easy and i love it.

Things like recovered balls take too much time, both analysing who gets them for us, and FPL actually rewarding them. I don't want this site to be filled with people complaining about Lucas only having 4 recovered balls when he was supposed to be on 5 etc.

It's not fun to cheer RBs while watching a match either. It's bad enough trying to tot up save points for your keeper.

does everyone not gravitate to the same pool of attacking mids though? wasn't mark on the scoutcast moaning about the template players every week

why would anyone stop hoping for an assist or goal? if you get a point for 5 recovered balls you aren't going to be cheering every one

agreed. the more variation in points allocation the less likely templates will form which for me is the worst aspect of fantasy games. within reason tho, you dont want points for everything but just enough to give you more of a choice so everyone doesnt end up with the same core of players.

There aren't really though wild rover.

The new bonus system means the attacking mids and wingers that get disproportionately dispossessed and give the ball away more often due to dribbling and attempting more difficult passes are not worth owning anymore.

Unless a mid is scoring goals there is no point having the in your team which really limits our options for the worse imo

I would get bored keeping track of recovered balls/pass completion etc. I want to be cheering on goals and assists in fantasy football, not short sideways passes between the defenders.

Having too many players as good options is almost a problem in itself as any FPL manager could score well without putting any thought into it.

I'm sure you would still be cheering on goals and assists

Only a select few would become good options i.e. Modric type players. Those that play key passes but don't deliver the final ball for the assists are currently wasted

'Of all time' = 'from 1992 onwards'

I love the assumption behind these statistics that no English top-flight football existed pre-1992, whereas the Premier League is just the continuation of the same competition with a much more unequal distribution of finances to lower-league clubs.

The Premier League was founded 20 February 1992. I wasn't deliberately being unrepresentative.

It's more useful to look at recent assisters.

No, I wasn't getting at you at all. I just find it amusing that the Premier League marketing team churn out an endless swathe of statistics which imply that time started in 1992 - 'best striker in Premier League history' etc.

It's the same English top division as pre-1992, but with added neo-liberal greed and self-aggrandizing quasi-Scientology PR.

It appears to me that changing the country of residence is not allowing you. Will try other ways.

Maybe they've fixed that from the beta. Could also be because the game isn't open yet.

tottenham have 50 shots, don't score, west ham go in their half once and win a corner, score from it, then spurs have to push and some rotter like vaz te makes it 0-2 on the counter in the dying stages. allardyce is caught in the changing room kissing the mirror after the game

      I bloody hope so.

Not a Utd fan, but id like to see them bounce back and none of those players are needed if they have Champions League intentions.

Wellbeck needs to be first choice to progress his career, same for Zaha.
Anderson seems content with his lot. He's gotta go, despite his talent.
      Hernandez is wasted.

I had my mind made up to have Tadic in my team this season (assuming his price isn't ridiculous) but now I'm having serious doubts about Southampton with the signing of Pelle. The man's got "flop" written all over him and considering the type of striker he is, I'm beginning to worry about Koeman's tactics.
