Fantasy Premier League – Player List Analysis – Budget Defenders

After the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game opened for business yesterday, we’ve been busy assessing the Player Price List for the season ahead. Having analysed the Goalkeepers in our first article earlier today, we turn our attentions to the defenders next, beginning with the cut-price options.

After shipping 61 goals last term – more than any side bar the relegated trio – Aston Villa have been placed firmly in the budget bracket this time around, with their main men coming in at 4.5. Holland’s World Cup hero Ron Vlaar is the clear standout candidate for Paul Lambert’s side; he earned bonus on seven of the nine occasions his team produced a clean sheet, though with five of those shut-outs arriving on the road, the midlands side have proved more than a little unpredictable. Jores Okore could offer an intriguing alternative after recovering from the injury that forced him onto the sidelines for the majority of 2013/14. Elsewhere, the full-back options are currently a lottery and with Leandro Bacuna classed as a midfielder once again, there’s very little reliable attacking threat on show.

Midland’s neighbours West Brom dovetail home/away perfectly with Villa over the season and have a couple of new signings in the sub 5.0 price range that are worth keeping an eye on. Belgian international Sebastien Pocognoli sets you back 4.5 and seems poised to take on the left-back role following the departure of Liam Ridgewell. New boss, Alan Irvine, has also drafted in former Fulham man Chris Baird, though it remains to be seen whether the 4.0-priced utility man can claim a starting berth. There’s a remote possibility that he could claim a holding midfield role.

The promoted sides are always ripe with budget options and Burnley duo Ben Mee and Jason Shackell are available for 4.5 to offer an alternative to those who have baulked at Kieran Trippier’s loftier price tag. Michael Duff is even cheaper at 4.0 but it seems likely that manager Sean Dyche will replace the veteran in the heart of defence: he’s had two bids for West Brom’s Craig Dawson (4.5) rejected. For those eyeing up the Clarets after they delivered 18 shut-outs last term, they alternate home/away with Hull over the full 38 Gameweeks.

The Tigers can offer James Chester, Maynor Figueroa and Liam Rosenior for 4.5, whilst Paul McShane and Alex Bruce are even cheaper at just 4.0. If he can steer clear of injuries, Chester looks the likeliest to partner Curtis Davies at centre-half and offer a stronger security of starts than the rest of his budget team-mates. A goal and three assists in the final 12 matches of last season also underlines Rosenior’s top flight improvement.

Revisiting the promoted prospects, Leicester’s main men are nicely camped in the 4.5 bracket. Former United man Ritchie de Laet produced two goals and five assists from right-back last term and looks the best option for those eyeing up a rotation partnership with Southampton over the 38 Gameweeks. Skipper Wes Morgan is similarly priced and missed just one match last term, finding the net on a couple of occasions. Matthew Upson comes in at 4.0 after joining from Brighton earlier this month, though it’s uncertain whether the veteran has been earmarked as back-up by boss Nigel Pearson.

Southampton can offer Callum Chambers at 4.5, with the promising full-back hoping to nail down a starting berth under new manager Ronald Koeman. At present, Chambers’ game time remains uncertain but, if he can prove himself over the pre-season matches, he could be an intriguing choice, given the Saints’ excellent opening schedule. We’re uncertain on the centre-back pairing, at St Mary’s, with both Dejan Lovren and Jose Fonte subject to recent transfer speculation. This could yet bring both Maya Yoshida (4.5) and Jos Hooiveld (4.0), onto the radar.

With a transition also going on down at White Hart Lane, it’s worth keeping an eye on the Spurs shake-up. New boss Mauricio Pochettino helped Southampton to 15 clean sheets last term and if one of Kyle Naughton, Benoit Assou-Ekotto or Ezequiel Fryers can edge into the starting line-up, at 4.5 apiece they would be worthy of our attentions.

The Palace defence will inevitable be a popular source for mid-price defensive assets but, in the budget bracket, we’re limited to the fortunes of Adrian Mariappa. Bearing in mind he started each of the last 10 Gameweeks of the previous campaign, Mariappa, at 4.5, could just be the value route into a defence that delivered 12 clean sheets in the last 28 Gameweeks of 2013/14.

Palace rotate home and away with West Ham, although, from the Hammers’ squad, only James Collins is available at 4.5. Like Mariappa, he could still emerge as a Fantasy prospect but, having started just two of the final 10 Gameweeks of 2013/14, he looks to have fallen down the pecking order under Sam Allardyce and could be a risk too far. If we want to invest in a Hammers rearguard that kept seven clean sheets both at home and away last term, the mid-price bracket seems our only solution.

Newcastle’s Steven Taylor and Paul Dummett have both been priced at just 4.0 this time around. Neither is a guaranteed starter under Alan Pardew, though, and with Feyenoord’s Daryl Janmaat arriving to replace Mathieu Debuchy on the right, Dummet faces a tough task to oust Davide Santon at left-back. Fabricio Coloccini looks the safest route at 4.5. The Argentine earned bonus on six of the eight occasions he collected a clean sheet and could appeal to those considering a rotation with Sunderland over the 38 Gameweeks. The Ryan Taylor (4.5) situation is also worth monitoring – he seems unlikely to make a claim for a staring berth but, with his set-piece prowess, he could make some handy cameos once back to full fitness.

Sunderland’s new signing, Billy Jones, the injury-prone card magnet that is Wes Brown and the decidedly unexciting John O’Shea are all available for 4.5. It’s hard to justify a Black Cat defender, however. If Vito Mannone can shrug off the challenge of Costel Pantilimon and replicate the resilience that saw him average 4.6 ppg in 2013/14, it’s difficult to look beyond the Italian, whose save points strengthen his appeal over any defensive team-mate.

QPR are the final promoted side and they boast Danny Simpson, Richard Dunne and Clint Hill for 4.5. However, it remains to be seen whether either of the two centre-halves will keep their starting berths in the season ahead – the imminent signing of Rio Ferdinand underlines that Harry Redknapp is determined to significantly strengthen a defence that managed just nine home clean sheets in 23 Championship fixtures last term. Ferdinand’s price, when he lands at Loftus Road, could be of interest.

Stoke’s Geoff Cameron started 37 of last term’s league matches, yet comes in at just 4.5. The Potters’ home form particularly boosts his appeal – Mark Hughes’ side shipped just 17 goals in front of their own fans last term, producing seven of their nine shut-outs at the Britannia. As we’ve seen, the Potters afford us an excellent home and away rotation with Swansea over the season.

Indeed, the potential departure of Ben Davies could bring Swansea’s Neil Taylor onto our radars. The former has been linked with a move to Spurs since the installation of Mauricio Pochettino and if Davies makes the switch to north London, Taylor, at 4.5, looks perfectly poised to take up the left-back role and could hand us a rotation partnership with Stoke’s Cameron for just 9.0.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Can I have a cheeky RMT?

    De Gea (Myhill)
    Cahill Debuchy Huth/Chambers (Duff)
    Fabregas Eriksen Arnautovic Ramsey (Albrighton)
    Rooney Sturridge Jelavic

    😀

Thanks Sarje, I'll keep an eye on that one. I've spent a lot on defense already and wouldn't like to spend more than 4 on the final defender. Will keep an eye on Upson too, or any other potential nailed on bargains out there 🙂

      Looks great TFF!

Personally, I'm not a fan of Debuchy with Everton, Chelsea, Spurs and City in the first 7 weeks. I'd rather have a Palace defender.

I think Sturridge is overpriced and would downgrade him to one of Dzeko/Giroud/Bony/Pelle. I'd use the savings to get Hazard for Fab or Sanchez for Ramsey or Eriksen.

        Thanks Innsie! 😀

What I fear with Debuchy is that he might get a couple of cleanies early doors against the likes of Leicester,Palace and Villa and I might be priced out to get him back in later.

Sturridge is there because unlike the other forwards you mentioned, I consider him a genuine captaincy contender. Everything Liverpool will do going forward will go through him, so he was always going to be a shoe in, regardless of price!

Would love to do Fab to Hazard, but can't find the funds... The only way I think I can make some cash is to let Debuchy go for Dann, which will give me an extra 0.5. Now where will you spend that? 🙂

Yeah that's my fear with Debuchy too but I think I'll start off without him and hope his price doesn't increase too much.

Good point about Sturridge being a captaincy contender, I can see him dropping in price with those tough fixtures at the start though.

Debuchy > Mariappa (looks like he'll be nailed on at RB) and Fabregas > Hazard. Easy 😉

Good point about him dropping in price, but I guess you take the good with the bad.

I'll keep an eye out on Mariappa as well, thanks man 😀

I am not convinced about albrighton.

I realise chambers is cheap, but check out the the huth/swansea player rotation.

Will monitor Albirghton in pre season, I just require a cheap 4.5 nailed option who can chip in with some goals/assists

I know about the huth/swansea rotation, but have a look at the stoke/southampton rotation too.Works a treat! There is no nailed on option in Swansea below 5

Seeing a lot of new people starting to litter the site with RMTs...

If you want us to rate your team here's what you should do:

    1) Firstly, get a grav. It takes two minutes and will get you more replies, as well as getting you more involved with the community here. Look at the FAQ if you don't know how to do this.

    2) Share your feelings about your team. Don't just post 'RMT' and list your players. Tell us who you're deciding between, who's definitely in your team, and why.

    3) Use your manners. I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that it's frustrating to give an in depth comment about someone's team without getting, at the very least, a thankyou in return.

    4) Don't frequently repost your team - especially in the DZ when pages don't move quickly, be patient, your post hasn't disappeared.

    5) Rate other peoples teams too. On this site we share our views and help out others, as well as asking for advice on our own team too.

    Thoughts on this mob...

    Krul - Mannone
Cahill - Reid - Ward - Cameron - Taylor (Swansea)
    Hazard - Sanchez - Mata - Arnie - 4.5 (Albrighton seems popular)
    Rooney - Bony/Dzeko - Wickham

    Reid/Ward and Cameron/Taylor to rotate.
Mata if he is starting in a favourable position, Eriksen if he isn't.
Where will Bony end up? and any other 6.0 options up front or a potential shake up to upgrade?

Jelevic or Long potential good 6.0 strikers. Nugent at 5.5 if he adapts to the PL

Seems to be some debate about whether Cameron will start or not

Like the midfield, and think i might be leaning towards Rooney myself. Have Rvp now but that 2 mil and a rested Roo seems tempting

Glad to see another Kiwi on here! 🙂

Your defence is good however Taylor will only play for Swans if Davies leaves. Monitor that, as well as the situation at Stoke as Bardsley might be the first choice RB over Cameron. Cameron can play as a CB or CDM too so hopefully he'll be in the starting XI.

Your mids are great, it's tough to choose between Mata, Fabregas and Ramsey for that 9m slot. Jelavic is another option for a 6m striker.

Cheers team, excellent feedback. I am aware of the Taylor/Davies situation. Will watch the Stoke situation too. Went with Mata over Ramsey and Cesc because I already have Sanchez and Hazard. Almost worth waiting 2-3 weeks for transfers to play out.

Two 5.0's aren't too expensive to rotate at the back?

Do Speroni and Mannone rotate well? Krul could be a good alternative to Speroni.

Interesting Baines and Chirches pick. Quite different, could work I guess.

Think you need a proper 3rd striker. Downgrade Baines/Chriches to afford one.

Toying with the idea of Naismith myself, but it depends on who the striker they get in is. Bit early for Baines, could be money better used somewhere else.

    Morning DZ!

    Thoughts on this team please?

    Krul
    Shaw Cahill Huth
    Fabregas Ramsey Eriksen Arnautovic
    Rooney Sturridge Jelavic
    ---------------------------------------------------
    Myhill Albrighton Chambers Mariappa

Sturridge could easily become Costa because of their fixtures.

Many people are wondering if Fabregas would be successful in a deeper role, what about the performances of Ramsey and Di Maria?

    Thanks.

Anyone going without any Chelsea defense?

    Thinking about going with
    1. STO-SWA rotation [ AVL BUR WBA LEI SOT NEW NEW SWA LEI WHM tot BUR]
    2. CPL+BUR on GW 5,8,11 [ars WHM new BUR SUN LEI hul WHM wba SUN HUL LIV]
    3. SOT+STO on GW 5,7 [liv WBA whm NEW qpr QPR sun SUN STO hul LEI avl]
    4. DDG keeper.

Hoping Davies to leave so we can have
    5.5+4 GK
    4*4.5 + 1*4 DEF

Not exactly all-home but the away fixtures are easy fixtures mostly.
Only downside is we'd be hoping Chelsea to concede every week and GW 1.

Hey guys, done a fair bit of tinkering and this is what i have currently:
    Mannone (Krul)
Cahill Rosenior Pocognoli (Ward , Chico)
    Sanchez Hazard Yaya/Mata Sidwell Hoilett
    Bony Costa** (Bent)

Obviously my defence is pretty light but feel all 5 of my defenders should start.
Not sure whether i'll keep Yaya in my side, feel as though i need some sort of united attack and Mata being my favourite player at Chelsea (Chelsea fan) and if he's played in his preferred central role he must be seriously considered.

Was tossing up between Sidwell and Shelvey as a 4th midfielder but Stoke have a really kind start to the season and do fancy Stevie to bang a few in again this season.
Not sure on Hoilett what do you guys think?

Lastly, have got Bent as back up as seems favourite to replace Benteke while he is recovering from his injury and who knows Bent might magically surprise a few.

Areas i should improve guys? 🙂

Hoilett may not start, Bent is past his prime, even if he plays. Don't Villa have Holt? Shelvey might be a better option than Sidwell but that's just my personal opinion.

Too much emphasis on fixtures and not enough on finding the best undervalued players. That's what I'm seeing here.
Form dosent settle down until October, that's the time to consider fixtures. All efforts should be about finding value

Hi guys. I currently have 2 drafts, not sure which team is the best. Any thoughts would be appreciated 🙂

    team 1)
    Mannone (hammer)
    Cameron, Mariappa, Debuchy (Coloccini, Dummett)
    Hazard, Arnautovic, Silva, Eriksen (Albrighton)
    Rooney, Sturridge, Giroud
    0m left

    team 2)
    Mannone (Krul)
    Chester, Jones, Debuchy (Shackell, Dummett)
    Hazard, Coutinho, Silva, Eriksen (Albrighton)
    Rooney, Giroud, Pelle/remy
    1m left

Currently i am going with team 2 as it is a more balanced team throughout. team 1 has a very weak defence. with the 1m left, i decided to keep with coutinho instead of getting ramsey as I wanted a liverpool attack cover, and also because of arsenal's early fixtures against strong defences. Also, not sure if pelle or remy would be better option. Pelle scored two goals last night in a friendly so I have pelle for now, but what do you guys think?

Seen a lot of teams with Mannone / Krul rotation. Why Mannone over Pantilimon?

Did you watch any games last season?

Sunderland would have been relegated 15 times if it weren't for Super Vito.

Agreed, just don't see why Pantilimon would have moved from City to Sunderland to sit on the bench. Good keeper from what i have seen and must have had other offers. See your point and yes Mannone was outstanding last year but Pantilimon surely would have moved for first team football?

Definitely a wait and see. It would seem tough to drop Mannone.

We need to wait for pre season first, to determine which one will start.

But that would not be big problem because both are being price at 4.5M.

From my experience, what goes up must come down. Case in point, Michu. Some players maintain that extraordinary form, some just don't and stay stagnant. He'll be in the watchlist for sure.

I think it's time to call it quits and take a step away from this place. Nothing personal, but I think we are being dragged into the same hole. Once again.

Going on the RMT's I notice this:

    -To little Man City love.
-At least one of the Tadic or Pelle bandwagons to fail miserably
-Snoddy/Jelavic are going to burn our rings
-The assumption ManU will suddenly keep 6 CS in a row
-Assuming Liverpool is a lost cause without Suarez

    🙄

      1. i dont think that anyone apart from dzeko justifies selection for the first few gw's
      2.agree

      4. moyes is gone, look at those fixtures and the price of their players
      5. they were a bit of a one man team, poor starting fixtures and overpriced players

        1. Why? They start with Newc(a). The will score. If it's Yaya or Kun, then the cat is among the pigeons. Second up is Liv(h), the one man team. Should be a walk in the park. Then Stoke(h), who last season could not defend from home.

With players like Silva,Dzeko, Yaya(if still with them),Nasri,Hart,Negredo,Jovetic,Navas all rested due to limited or no WC involvement i can see them raring to go.

I have silva and coutinho in my team.A lot of people seem to be overlooking them. Coutinho is only in 3.1% of teams and silva 9.1%. Great differentials imo. Especially with coutinho, I think with suarez gone, him and sturridge will really step up and deliver for liverpool.

I doubt it. Lallana will probably play on the wing nxt to sturridge and sterling on the other side. Gerrard, Henderson Coutinho i think will be the midfield 3

I'd like to have cpl and sot defender, but looking at their fixtures - no point to do that if I go with two big hitters at the back.
No use for Vlaar then either 🙁
