Fantasy Premier League – Player List Analysis – Budget Defenders

After the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game opened for business yesterday, we’ve been busy assessing the Player Price List for the season ahead. Having analysed the Goalkeepers in our first article earlier today, we turn our attentions to the defenders next, beginning with the cut-price options.

After shipping 61 goals last term – more than any side bar the relegated trio – Aston Villa have been placed firmly in the budget bracket this time around, with their main men coming in at 4.5. Holland’s World Cup hero Ron Vlaar is the clear standout candidate for Paul Lambert’s side; he earned bonus on seven of the nine occasions his team produced a clean sheet, though with five of those shut-outs arriving on the road, the midlands side have proved more than a little unpredictable. Jores Okore could offer an intriguing alternative after recovering from the injury that forced him onto the sidelines for the majority of 2013/14. Elsewhere, the full-back options are currently a lottery and with Leandro Bacuna classed as a midfielder once again, there’s very little reliable attacking threat on show.

Midland’s neighbours West Brom dovetail home/away perfectly with Villa over the season and have a couple of new signings in the sub 5.0 price range that are worth keeping an eye on. Belgian international Sebastien Pocognoli sets you back 4.5 and seems poised to take on the left-back role following the departure of Liam Ridgewell. New boss, Alan Irvine, has also drafted in former Fulham man Chris Baird, though it remains to be seen whether the 4.0-priced utility man can claim a starting berth. There’s a remote possibility that he could claim a holding midfield role.

The promoted sides are always ripe with budget options and Burnley duo Ben Mee and Jason Shackell are available for 4.5 to offer an alternative to those who have baulked at Kieran Trippier’s loftier price tag. Michael Duff is even cheaper at 4.0 but it seems likely that manager Sean Dyche will replace the veteran in the heart of defence: he’s had two bids for West Brom’s Craig Dawson (4.5) rejected. For those eyeing up the Clarets after they delivered 18 shut-outs last term, they alternate home/away with Hull over the full 38 Gameweeks.

The Tigers can offer James Chester, Maynor Figueroa and Liam Rosenior for 4.5, whilst Paul McShane and Alex Bruce are even cheaper at just 4.0. If he can steer clear of injuries, Chester looks the likeliest to partner Curtis Davies at centre-half and offer a stronger security of starts than the rest of his budget team-mates. A goal and three assists in the final 12 matches of last season also underlines Rosenior’s top flight improvement.

Revisiting the promoted prospects, Leicester’s main men are nicely camped in the 4.5 bracket. Former United man Ritchie de Laet produced two goals and five assists from right-back last term and looks the best option for those eyeing up a rotation partnership with Southampton over the 38 Gameweeks. Skipper Wes Morgan is similarly priced and missed just one match last term, finding the net on a couple of occasions. Matthew Upson comes in at 4.0 after joining from Brighton earlier this month, though it’s uncertain whether the veteran has been earmarked as back-up by boss Nigel Pearson.

Southampton can offer Callum Chambers at 4.5, with the promising full-back hoping to nail down a starting berth under new manager Ronald Koeman. At present, Chambers’ game time remains uncertain but, if he can prove himself over the pre-season matches, he could be an intriguing choice, given the Saints’ excellent opening schedule. We’re uncertain on the centre-back pairing, at St Mary’s, with both Dejan Lovren and Jose Fonte subject to recent transfer speculation. This could yet bring both Maya Yoshida (4.5) and Jos Hooiveld (4.0), onto the radar.

With a transition also going on down at White Hart Lane, it’s worth keeping an eye on the Spurs shake-up. New boss Mauricio Pochettino helped Southampton to 15 clean sheets last term and if one of Kyle Naughton, Benoit Assou-Ekotto or Ezequiel Fryers can edge into the starting line-up, at 4.5 apiece they would be worthy of our attentions.

The Palace defence will inevitable be a popular source for mid-price defensive assets but, in the budget bracket, we’re limited to the fortunes of Adrian Mariappa. Bearing in mind he started each of the last 10 Gameweeks of the previous campaign, Mariappa, at 4.5, could just be the value route into a defence that delivered 12 clean sheets in the last 28 Gameweeks of 2013/14.

Palace rotate home and away with West Ham, although, from the Hammers’ squad, only James Collins is available at 4.5. Like Mariappa, he could still emerge as a Fantasy prospect but, having started just two of the final 10 Gameweeks of 2013/14, he looks to have fallen down the pecking order under Sam Allardyce and could be a risk too far. If we want to invest in a Hammers rearguard that kept seven clean sheets both at home and away last term, the mid-price bracket seems our only solution.

Newcastle’s Steven Taylor and Paul Dummett have both been priced at just 4.0 this time around. Neither is a guaranteed starter under Alan Pardew, though, and with Feyenoord’s Daryl Janmaat arriving to replace Mathieu Debuchy on the right, Dummet faces a tough task to oust Davide Santon at left-back. Fabricio Coloccini looks the safest route at 4.5. The Argentine earned bonus on six of the eight occasions he collected a clean sheet and could appeal to those considering a rotation with Sunderland over the 38 Gameweeks. The Ryan Taylor (4.5) situation is also worth monitoring – he seems unlikely to make a claim for a staring berth but, with his set-piece prowess, he could make some handy cameos once back to full fitness.

Sunderland’s new signing, Billy Jones, the injury-prone card magnet that is Wes Brown and the decidedly unexciting John O’Shea are all available for 4.5. It’s hard to justify a Black Cat defender, however. If Vito Mannone can shrug off the challenge of Costel Pantilimon and replicate the resilience that saw him average 4.6 ppg in 2013/14, it’s difficult to look beyond the Italian, whose save points strengthen his appeal over any defensive team-mate.

QPR are the final promoted side and they boast Danny Simpson, Richard Dunne and Clint Hill for 4.5. However, it remains to be seen whether either of the two centre-halves will keep their starting berths in the season ahead – the imminent signing of Rio Ferdinand underlines that Harry Redknapp is determined to significantly strengthen a defence that managed just nine home clean sheets in 23 Championship fixtures last term. Ferdinand’s price, when he lands at Loftus Road, could be of interest.

Stoke’s Geoff Cameron started 37 of last term’s league matches, yet comes in at just 4.5. The Potters’ home form particularly boosts his appeal – Mark Hughes’ side shipped just 17 goals in front of their own fans last term, producing seven of their nine shut-outs at the Britannia. As we’ve seen, the Potters afford us an excellent home and away rotation with Swansea over the season.

Indeed, the potential departure of Ben Davies could bring Swansea’s Neil Taylor onto our radars. The former has been linked with a move to Spurs since the installation of Mauricio Pochettino and if Davies makes the switch to north London, Taylor, at 4.5, looks perfectly poised to take up the left-back role and could hand us a rotation partnership with Stoke’s Cameron for just 9.0.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Don't think it's wise to double up on United defense...Cameron/Wison..both may not start...To be honest it looks for like a 2013/14 FPL team than a 14/15

My initial thought was Debuchy but I'm willing to gamble on United early doors with their fixtures.

Yep, might just get O'Shea instead who is nailed.

Because of no newcomers? I'm gonna wait and see, obviously not gonna be the same XI when Opening day is here.

Getting your defence correct first time can have a huge impact on your season. You want to be using your transfer each week on getting in a big name midfielder or striker who either scored a hat-trick last week and is going up in price or who has just hit an easy run of fixtures. You don't want to be using it to swap Vlaar to Chambers because you just looked at Villa's fixtures. The desire to do both means you either take a points hit or you end up having an injured Chester on your bench for 12 weeks.

Once a template tends to start forming in the attacking positions there is normally still quite a bit of variation in defences, getting it correct can give you the edge. Lots has been made of rotating pairs for the coming season and, with the majority of teams getting more cleansheets at home, this is an important aspect of the game. However Bedknobs and Broomsticks made the very good point yesterday evening that many of the rotations may work so you have home and away but if the ‘home fixtures are poor like WHM/CPL’ or ‘both teams are gash like AVL and WBA’ then this is not a good way to pick a defence.

When picking your defence I think that there should be four key criteria...

    1) Defenders you pick should be nailed on.
    2) Defenders should have a mixture of prices so that it is easier to transfer in whoever starts scoring every other game.
    3) You should have three fixtures almost every week that give you a good chance of a cleansheet.
    4) Budget should be around £24-25m.

Having spent a little while playing around with transfers, as I’m sure everyone else has done this is what I’ve come up with....

    MUN, ARS, CPL, STO, 4m

Budget players of Jones, Debuchy, Mariappa, Cameron, Duff = 24m
Premium players of Shaw, Kos, Ward, Huth, Duff = 26m

This gives you the following fixtures (only using your 4 decent defenders) in the first ten weeks of playing three at the back...

    (CPL,SWA,AVL) (WHM,sun,hul) (lei,new,bur) (BUR,QPR,LEI) (avl,lei,qpr) (LEI,WHM,NEW) (hul,EVE,sun) (HUL,wba,SWA) (sun,wba,sot) (BUR,SUN,WHM)

You play the promoted teams 9 times and only one team (EVE) from the top 7.

What are other people’s ideas for getting the most out of their defences?

      - gotta be nailed on
      - don't trust any of the 4.0 untill gw6 at least.
      - injuries will happen but certain players (eg Collo) seem to suffer more.
      - avoid yellows/red, I know this is hard but you know with Briwn he's gonna get sent off here and there.

I know. Hopefully the pre season will shed some light. Doos seems to think Wilson will lose his place to Bardsley and and that Shaw/Huth/Cameron/Pieters are nailed on.

I might opt for Simpson(Qpr...not ideal I know) to rotate with Chester for the first 3 weeks until the dust settles.

Maybe I just lose Jones for a nailed on 5m def and upgrade my 4m to a playing 4.5m. prob best.

A similar level of analysis here.

Tend to work on playing someone like Cahill every week, then having 4 cheapies that can provide 2 starters every gw. If you have backup for when Chelsea have a tough fixture, all the better.

Debuchy looks very appealing at 5.5 though.

One draft pairs those two with Chambers, Shackell and Upson for a pretty healthy rotation pattern.

Another idea is to invest a bit more and go for a pairing of Curtis Davies with Trippier for their added threat going forward in conjunction with perfect home and away rotation and reasonable prospects of cleanies at Turf Moor and The KC.

      Great post

I am not sold on Debuchy personally, with only one favourable home fix in the first 7 gws. Mert is still quite clumsy and a weak link imo, and they need to adress that no 6 role in midfield before I consider him, even at that price. Too many good options elsewhere imo

They don't have great fixtures but they do slot in well with the rest of the rotation, dropping an Arsenal defender for 4 of the first 7 does seem a bit crazy but it makes things interesting!
I wouldn't put him in if I wanted him playing every game at the start but remember that 6 out of first 10 games are CPL,lei, avl,HUL,sun,BUR.

Great post, and you've just described my draft defence. I suppose the difficulty comes when pre-season starts heating up and you start feeling the imperative to squeeze a little more out of your defence to spend a little more on that 3rd striker or 4th mid who's just scored back to back hat tricks...

      Presently I'm looking at:

      Krul Mannone
      Shaw Debuchy Mariappa Cameron Duff
      Fab Mata Eriksen Arnie Albrighton
      Roo Giroud Dzeko

...with 2m in the bank to play with on upgrades closer to the deadline.

We have the same keepers, strikers and 3 midfielders as well.

Do you think Shaw is worth the extra over Jones?

I'm sure it will change round a bit for me but I really like the way this defence rotates for the first 10, I expect I'll wildcard by that point so it doesn't matter after that.

He's cheaper, more of a differential, more potential for rise in price, and fit for the first time in a long time, so very much under the radar.

On the other hand, Oezil is Oezil.

No. I will use the first two gameweeks to check if he's a rotation risk.

Thereafter, if he's starting regularly (this is probably dependent on Khedira not signing), he's a bargain at £5m, and I should work him into my team.

I'll probably ship out Giroud and Debuchy, and eventually replace Oezil with Walcott. It's too risky getting him from the off. Hopefully he won't rise in price until after GW2.

Anyone thinking of getting Ramsey should get Diaby instead, though. As long as Khedira doesn't come in.

Diaby is a lot like Ramsey. He was brilliant before injury derailed his career, and when finally fit, can be the player he always threatened to be.

Plus, he's 28. That's when footballers are at the peak of their powers.

If that's true, hopefully he doesn't score in the first two games, so I can get him in before his price goes up.

I can't transfer him in after GW1 without a hit because I have 4 Arsenal.

I do think he's ahead of Jack, as Le Prof is a big fan. I hope that Arteta doesn't rotate with him too much though, as Le Prof might want to keep him in cotton wool.

    Morning all,

Anyone else feel that putting a team together this year seems easier than years gone? Soem nicely priced midfielders and lack of striker options helps probably but still...

Chucked thsi together very quickly and pretty happy with it...which never usually happens!

    De Gea - Schmeicel

    Cahill - Debuchy - Cameron - N.Taylor - Lafferty

    Hazard - Ozil - Eriksen - Dorrans - Snodgrass

    RVP - Dzeko - Austin

Obviously Taylor is in, on the assumption that Davies leaves.

Why would the Vermaelen that made so many mistakes in the Arsenal defence become the Vermaelen, saviour of MUN? 😕

And why would Vlaar, who is positionally on planet Mars, beef up the MUN defence?

    I am puzzled.

Vlaar had a great game in the WC against Argentina and now he is a world beater. Didn't you hear?

Ha I think people are working off the idea that at AVL he is let down by the rest of the defence and lack of protection in front of him. Some would say this might be no different at MUN

Arteta at 5.5m? Unless Khedira is signed, or some other replacement.

Do we think he is still on pens or could Sanchez (is he a penalty taker?) take them?

Did his minutes diminish last season, I can't remember?

Yeah he kept pens when Cazorla signed (and I think I'm right in saying he took pens for Spain at the time).

no arteta would take pens in that case...I can see rotation and he offers no threat other than pens

not a good option imo...shelvey looks much better at the same price

RVP might not be ready for the first GW, also it depends how LVG lines up. If he plays 2 strikers then Rooney will be a steal.

Who the feck are West Brom signing anyway?

If you look at their midfield and forward line, it is probably the worst in the PL right now.

    Relegation contenders?

If Sanchez is on pens with Arteta off the field (which I think will happen quite a lot this season) he's starting to look essential to me. Currently going without, but that may change if we get this confirmed...

Özil might be on pens, too
And Podolski/Arteta, even if one of both is on, will take pens.

there may be a decision to be made between ozil and sanchez, however I think after the debacles last season sanchez would take them - muller taking them for Germany probably proves ozil has lost his confidence from the spot

well I'm not keen on a team with Albrighton and Vardy in it unless you're reasonably certain they're both going to play...picking 2 guys from the same team means you can't rotate them
