Fantasy Premier League – Player List Analysis – Premium Defenders

Having examined the Goalkeepers, Budget Defenders and Mid-Price Defenders, our assessment of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Player List continues this morning. This time around, we consider the merits of the premium priced rearguard options for the campaign ahead:

Arsenal’s Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny both come in at 6.0 on the back of a season which saw the Gunners deliver 17 clean sheets (11 at home and six away). Serving up 157 and 155 points respectively, the pair both notched twice and notched 20+ bonus points but while their security of starts once again looks unquestioned, the arrival of Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle offers us a cheaper alternative. Priced at 5.5, the Frenchman looks set to replace compatriot Bacary Sagna a right-back and, given that the latter made 34 starts last time around, it seems Debuchy would be guaranteed security of starts for the campaign ahead. The downside is a penchant for picking up yellows – Debuchy was booked 12 times in 46 appearances for the Magpies.

The situation at Chelsea is an intriguing one. Jose Mourinho’s side produced 18 clean sheets last time around and look poised for significant investment once again, though the arrival of Filipe Luis places a degree of uncertainty right across the back-four. At 6.0, Cesar Azpilicueta offers the cheapest option amongst the Blues defence after replacing Ashley Cole as first-choice left-back in 2013/14 but Luis looks poised to take over that berth, either forcing Azpilicueta onto the right of defence or back onto the bench.

If Mourinho has earmarked Azpilicueta for the right-back berth, though, then question marks may hover over Branislav Ivanovic’s security. The Serbian is the priciest of all Chelsea defenders at 7.0 and could be shifted into the centre, leaving him to vie with John Terry and Gary Cahill (both 6.5) for game time in the middle. With the keeper situation also yet to be decided, the best route into the Blues backline looks a little fuzzy at the moment, though pre-season should hopefully afford us a window into Mourinho’s thinking.

Seamus Coleman’s outstanding displays in the season gone by have ensured the Everton right-back joins team-mate Leighton Baines as one of the costliest defenders on the FPL market. Both have been slapped with a 7.0 price tag but, in spite of such a lofty valuation, their points potential at both ends of the pitch still suggests they could be worth the outlay. At the back, Roberto Martinez’ side managed 15 shut-outs in the previous campaign, whilst six goals and two assists from Coleman and five goals and five assists from Baines underlines their attacking prowess. With a European schedule also to factor in, we may see more rotation in the midfield areas once again and with the forward role still undecided, the Toffees full-backs may be the most secure route for investment.

Vincent Kompany could prove to be the safest option in the City defence this time around. With the arrival of Bacary Sagna making a significant dent in Pablo Zabaleta’s consistency of starts on the right, both the full-back positions look set for rotation under Manuel Pellegrini and, whilst Martin Demichelis may tempt some at 6.0, there are question marks over the Argentine’s security of starts amid reports that the club are closing in on a move for Porto’s Eliaquim Mangala.

Coming in at 6.0, Luke Shaw is the costliest candidate in the United defence under Louis van Gaal. The left-back delivered just a single assist for Southampton last season but, perhaps with the possibility of a 3-4-3 formation under the Dutchman in mind, FPL have handed us a dilemma over the new arrival. Granted, there are cheaper options available in the Red Devils’ rearguard but, if he’s handed a wing-back berth, an opening schedule that pits United against just one of last term’s top 10 in the first eight fixtures may bring him into our plans.

Liverpool’s Martin Skrtel (6.0) is also dearer than any of his defensive team-mates. It’s understandable, given that the big centre-half grabbed seven goals for the Reds last term, with his aerial threat in the box from dead-ball situations coming to fruition time and again. Heavy investment in the Liverpool defence is still questionable, however, with Brendan Rodgers’ side shipping 50 goals and claiming just 10 clean sheets in their title chasing season.

Spurs pair Jan Vertonghen and Kyle Walker also set you back 6.0 apiece. The arrival of Mauricio Pochettino bodes well for their defensive prospects – the new man in charge led Southampton to 15 clean sheets in the season gone by; seven at home was supplemented by eight shut-outs away, more than any other side on their travels. Pochettino’s penchant for attacking full-backs looks promising for Walker, whilst Vertonghen’s five goals in 2012/13 serve as a reminder of his attacking potential. The downside, though, is that a number of Spurs defenders are priced at 5.0. If Danny Rose can nail down the left-back berth (potential signing Ben Davies is also 5.0) or the likes of Michael Dawson, Younes Kaboul or Vlad Chiriches can cement a start in the heart of the back-four, they could offer us better value should Walker and Vertonghen fail to deliver the anticipated attacking returns.

    Rate My Team?

    Mannone, (Krul)
    Chambers, Cameron, Debuchy, (Ward), (Chester)
    Nasri, Eriksen, Schurrle, Ramsey (Albrighton)
    Rooney, Dzeko, Costa

Went for Mannone (4.5) and Krul (4.5) as my rotation for the season. The latter is nailed on at such great value, however question marks raised over the formers playing time with the arrival of Pantimilion. But, solid options nevertheless.

Chambers (4.5) is a risk, but he's young so thrives under Koeman's youth policy, and Saints have a good youngsters record. Hoping that Cameron (4.5) is a starter for Stoke, but I could just buy Vermaelen (5.0) and hope he transfers to United. Not too sure about Debuchy (5.5), but Arsenal aren't bad at the back, and he's better than Gibbs injury prone Kieran. Crystal Palace were great towards the end of last season, so I have confidence in Ward (5.0). Chester (4.5) is nailed-on. Villa aren't great defensively so Vlaar (4.5) is a shambles.

Nasri (8.5), is tempting, fitter than Silva and is improving with each season. No World Cup means his rested and raring to go. Eriksen (8.0) found form later on last season, and I think that he'll be Tottenham's main man this year. Ramsey (9.0) has also rested and no World Cup. Won the FA Cup for Arsenal last season and should bang 20 goals, freedom to make runs from deep meaning he'll assist more. Reason Arsenal lost the title, cause he was injured. Another one is Tadic (7.5) who I might consider. Got many assists, and from what I've heard, he was a very good player in the Eredivisie last year. Should be on set-pieces and the team built around him and so he's on my watchlist. Albrighton (4.5) as my cheapie and he should do well as bench fodder.

Had to include Rooney (10.5), I went with the cheaper option rather than RVP (12.5). RVP may do better under is bromance with LVG, but not enough to justify the extra 2.0. Providing that Dzeko (8.5) is nailed, he'll have too much great support behind him to not do well, unless the other players take a cut of his goals like we saw last season, but then he may assist more often.

No attacking Chelsea players could be a mistake. I have chosen Schurrle at the tempting price of 7.5; he will be brilliant if he is guaranteed to start more often, he's a better player than Willian and Salah, maybe Mourinho will have been impressed by his World Cup form? Dzeko is in a similar predicament for me... Costa (10.5) could be a striker that doesn't join the list of forwards buried at the bridge, so I've included him also.

What do you lot think? All replies and suggestions are welcome!

    Thanks

There are lots of unknowns with Rooney at the moment which hopefully will become clearer during pre-season like

      - will he be nailed on under LVG?
      - what formation will LVG play?
      - where will Rooney fit into that formation?
      - how will Rooney be mentally after another very public World Cup failure

With RVP there is only one question:

      - will he be fully fit?

If the answer is yes to that then I would rather go into the season with RVP. If the answer is no, I would go in with Rooney but with an easy route to switch to RVP

Nice team on paper but with all that thought behind it, it will surely fail because you have convinced yourself already that this is the team to have. It looks like a great mid season team but too many punts and a weak defence.

Nice team, I'm not sure about Schurlle though. Perhaps when (if) Sigurdsson gets his transfer you could get him instead and then upgrade a defender.

Will Dummet play at the start of the season with Santon being injured? Only 4.0 which would be very useful even if it is only for a month because other 4.0 options will probably emerge by then.

Morning all, been toying with the idea of a slighty unconventional team to start the season with a heavier defence than usual:

    Vito, Krul
    Rafael, Terry, Vert, 2 x 4m
    Sanchez, Mata, Tadic, Arnie, 4.5m
    RVP, Bony, Jelavic

0 in the bank. While the defence is pricey, they all have decent fixtures and attacking potential. Changing from a defence of Rafael, 3 x 4.5m and 1 x 4m was done for the price of Sturridge (SOT, mci, tot) to Bony (mun, WBA, BUR). Rafa can be switched to a different Utd defender based on preseason.

Yeah I do want Sturridge GW4. Terry to a 4m at that point is an option to raise 2.5m of the 3m funds required.

I'm a bit put off by Costa because of the Chelsea striker issue. Its something to think about though, Costa would make the upgrade easier.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    FPL formation

Given the FPL player prices and what we know about bonus points what is your favoured formation?

Is it 4-4-2 to exploit defensive points?
Is it the traditional 3-4-3 for balance?
Or is it 3-5-2 due the vast options in midfield and lack of options in attack?

Keep an eye out on news about Phil Jones. If it's a 3-4-3, he should be in, otherwise I'd steer clear

Also, I don't like how you will have to start one of Arnautovic, Albrighton or Jelavic every week. Not really great players. And that someone as inconsistent as Nasri will have to be a regular fixture.

      Other than that, it's good.

I am thinking of taking Walcott as my 9M option. Undecided on Giroud too aswell.

The major qualm is whether to have a budget striker or a budget 4th MF. Last season I started with the former option, but quickly took the latter option (always intended that), but I was helped by the fact that the bargains came very early into the season (Ramsey, Barkley, Morisson) and then later on I nailed it with Sterling. That allowed me to have Hazard, Yaya, Walcott along with Rooney, Suarez and Aguero. Though injuries ruined that dream team - I still managed to get good players like Silva, Mata (never found a good replacement for Kun though).

    My team:

    Krul/Mannone
    Rafael/Trippier/Chambers/Bruce/G.Cahill
    Hazard/Silva/Albrighton/Eriksen/9M
    Rooney/Giroud/Austin

He isn't that good, good finisher, god pace, but he has a poor first touch, sulks around up top without getting involved and requires through balls to be played into him from deep. He's a 'one trick pony' so to speak, and his attitude alone makes him a bad signing. Bloody hope this doesn't go through.

Depends who they buy Gimli, if they spend that 60 million on one or two class players then great, if they spend it on 3 or 4 decent/untested players from outside the PL then I'm not sure. While they've signed a couple of PL players which bodes better they are at the cusp of doing a Tottenham on it if not careful.

Why are so many down on Giroud?

Third highest point scoring forward from last season (excluding Suarez)
Improved on his previus season at Arsenal
will have chances galore from a weath of assist merchants

Only downside is chance of him being replaced by Sanchez, but that is unlikely to happen for a while. At 8.5 i dont see any downside

Morning all, been tinkering all day (its 7pm in Tokyo) and after much thought i've settled on this team and here's some reasoning to go with it.

Begovic(+4.0): I toyed with the Mannone/Krul partnership but didnt like the early fixtures. I also looked at Cameron/Taylor in defence and just couldnt get comfortable with the doubts over Cameron, and having a swansea defender at all. So I've maintained the Stoke coverage via Begovic.

Debuchy: Arsenal (ignoring a few thumpings) & Chelsea had the best defences last year by far. Kos/Mert would be the first name on my teamsheet, but due to lack of funds Debuchy is the best route in.

Rafael: Can't afford a Chelsea defender right now, and with Uniteds fixtures (+ LVGs defensive style) i've gone for a Rafael. Monitoring the Vermaelen situation closely.

Reid+Mariappa+4.0(benched): These two have the most defensive managers in the league, so i felt it worth paying up 0.5 more to get this combination over the others.

Sanchez: Lots of great options in the Arsenal lineup, but this guy could become the main man and most probably OOP too. Captain material.

Hazard: See Sanchez comment + he has been doing it for 2 years already in the Prem. Essential.

Fabregas: To be honest its a coinflip between Cesc/Silva/Ramsey(+Ozil/Walcott in Sep) and Im sure this slot will be used for that kind of fixture friendly rotation all season. Cesc's fixtures are very kind to start so he gets the nod. A much cheaper option than Costa btw.

Shelvey: Running out of cash, so picked someone who is cheap, could be playing in the hole and has good fixtures in the first 3 games. A calculated gamble.

Albrighton: Dont see any other options for a 4.5 bench option. High ownership %age means TV should be protected.

RVP: United fixtures make one of RVP & Rooney essential, and I think the Skunk will be LVGs main man.

Dzeko: To be honest this a perfect slot for fixture rotation this season with so many 8.5 options. Any one of Dzeko/Bony/Giroud/Adebayor can slot in here. Dzeko is a gamble to start with and his continued place in my side will be judged nearer the time. A transfer to Bony in wk2 is also on the cards.

Jelavic: Hull have the best first 3 fixtures of anyone, and they have invested somewhat over the summer. They could well be the surprise team this season (I thought they were much better overall than their points tally suggests). Jelly is a gamble though but I dont see better options priced sub-6.0.

I'd say Albrighton having a high percentage ownership means he's actually more likely to drop in price, as people will transfer him out when they realise he isn't playing. Think Britton is nailed on, won't do much more than a steady stream of 2s and 3s, but at least he'll guarantee you points off the bench.

Price drop requires 10% of managers to sell. Assuming he has 15% ownership and 3mln players that requires 45,000 people.

He wont go down in price there are far more priorities in wk2 than sorting out the bench!

Lukaku, if in Everton, will be practically the only reliable striker and definitely nailed on, I suppose that he's a must-have if he's transferred at 9.0

So from what it seems of the Chelsea backline.

    GK - Cech/Courtois
    RB- Ivanovic/Azpilicueta
    CB- Two of Ivanovic/Cahill/Terry/Zouma
    LB- Filipe Luis/Azpilicueta (!?!)

    That's some real dilemma.

Ivanovic has played the most minutes for any Chelsea player in the last two years, and there has been nothing to suggest he has dropped out of favour, why would you say so?

That's more of a matter of preference.

Rafa hated JT, and so when Azpi dislodged Ivanovic at RB, Iva took Terry's place. (Azpi took some time to get in the team, loads of bench time initially).

In the second season, Mourinho took Azpi at RB and Cole at LB as a worse combo to Iva at RB and Azpi at LB.

Now we have Luis and Azpi on the flanks, JT is the main man in the middle, and Cahill has a secured partnership.

Having suffered a -4 from Debuchy im trying to convince myself it wont happen again.

My logic for forgiving him is that

    1) hes an attacking defender, and as a Newcastle defender he spent much more time defending than attacking
    2) playing in a better team he is likely to be doing more attacking than defending and as a consequence is likely to recieve a lower amount of cards

    Make sense?

Gibbs is equally attacking, and the shittiest backup in the whole Arsenal team.

True. Although, if Arsenal keep a clean sheet, Kosc and Mert will generally be first in the queue for baps.

If you had to find 0.5 from your team which change would you take?

    A. Coloccini > Dummet (either player would be my "fifth choice" defender, but Dummet more of a risk)

    B. Koscielny > Debuchy (reluctant because initial analysis suggests that Koscielny will be ahead of Debuchy in the BPS stakes)

    Thanks.
