Projections & Rate My Team Are Live

The Projections and Rate My Team tool were both updated in our Members Area earlier this week. Our members can now get access to these areas via the menu bar and start putting both to use in their pre-season selections.

Once again this season, the projections are based on the Rate My Team statistical model, developed by “Professor” Chris Atkinson, who some of you may remember as a guest on the ScoutCast.

Below you’ll find an FAQ on our Projections and Rate My Team, plus links to movies recorded last year with Chris that talk you through the functionality of Rate My Team and even the methods that go into building and maintaining it week on week.

How do I use the Projections?
Crucially, these tables can be used as another opinion-former when comparing players. Every player is rated for goals, assists, clean sheets etc based on values created by the “Rate My Team” statistical model – the values returned for each player are the expected values in accordance with its calculations.

A good way of thinking about them is to consider them average values for each player. If the season was played out 500 times, the values you’ll find in these projection tables are the average that the model would expect the player to score.

One of the most useful aspects of the Projections is the value column. You can sort by this to find the best value (Points Per FPL Million) delivered by players in each position.

With tables for the season and the opening six Gameweeks, you can get a view on long-term and short-term returns and value.

What are these values based on?
The Rate My Team statistical model is a complex beast – it uses historical data stretching back a number of seasons and, of course, specific player and team data. When generating the player values, the model looks at the specific fixture in each Gameweek, assessing the strength of both teams before calculating the likely team goals scored and how these goals will translate to specific player stats. The probability of a player taking part in the match is also a key ingredient – factors such as rotation, injuries and suspensions are taken into account. You’ll find out more on how Rate My Team works in the third movie due out in the next few days.

When will these Projections be updated?
It’s likely that we’ll update the projections at least every other day up until the season kick-off. As we get more data on likely first choice lineups and as the transfer market moves to cast doubt over starters, we will adapt and tweak the model accordingly. A new player, particularly if we anticipate they will threaten a starting role, can have a major impact on the projections and Rate My Team, influencing the projected output of his new team-mates.

The projections will also be updated throughout the season, providing a week by week view of what the model expects each player to score for the remaining Gameweeks to help guide your selections and transfers. We normally update on both Tuesday and Friday in order to build the latest team news into the numbers.

What is Rate My Team?
Rate My team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which, of course, plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves. The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking, defensive rating, every player a probability of playing a given match with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

How Can It Help Me?
If you’re a member you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it as a projections tool to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next X number of Gameweeks. As you’ll see in the movie below, you have a players table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort on “Value” to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

However, this is just one part of the functionality. Once the season starts, Rate My Team can also analyse your existing FPL lineup, recommend captains, vice captains, your bench and order of substitutes and allow you to model your future transfers. In the second “My Team” movie below, you can preview this functionality in full.

Rather than post your team in the comments on the main site, our members can now enter their FPL code in Rate My Team and it will immediately offer you an appraisal of your squad. Using Rate my Team you can transfer players in and out of your squad and get an immediate appraisal of the impact of that transfer.

Rate my Team was used extensively by last season’s Fantasy Premier League winner, Tom Fenley. Next week he’ll be posting a two-part article guiding you on how he set about using the tool and other members’ area features to help him over his triumphant season.

Memberships for the coming season, giving you access to both the projections and Rate My Team tool, along with many other features, are available for the pre-season price of £12.50. Click here for further details, including an array of preview movies to demonstrate what’s on offer.

Both. BR will used both formations depending on the opposition. 4-4-2 diamond is usually used against tougher opposition like Utd or City. Since Liverpool have some tough fixtures, this plays to Remy's advantage as it means he starts more central for the start of the campaign.

If he looks good then BR may play it more often, or give him the odd central role with Sturridge given a wide berth.

Planning to have Costa (c) GW1 and 2 then swap him for Rooney who will likely be captain GW3 4 and 5. LVGs comments have given me confidence in Rooney's position, but not confidence enough that it means he outscores Diego Costa against championship promoted clubs.

              ah I see 🙂

just a word of warning, people often don't go through with planned transfers, as unexpected things always happen forcing them to make transfers elsewhere, leaving you with costa against good teams 😉

I think making sure I have some Utd attack against the 3 promoted sides back to back will be my top priority, unless half my team get injured. I know it may be risky, but it is a risk I am willing to take. If I chicken out its just Rooney from GW1.

Would be interested to hear opinions on this:

    A) De Jong, Davies (Tot), Mariappa (or any 4.5), Zamora

    B) Giroud, Wisdom, Targett (or other 4m def), Albrighton

Picking A would see De Jong and Davies starting with Mariappa and Zamora firmly on the bench (I understand that Zamora will barely play).

Picking B would see Giroud and Wisdom starting, with a 4m def + albrighton on the bench.

It's the difference between a 3-5-2 and a 3-4-3, and I definitely know which one I would pick, but would like a second opinion.

When I first saw this post, I thought it was some insightful information. Now that I've read it, it's asking me for information. I much prefer the former. Btw 3-5-2 and howay the lads

Apologies - the insight comes later once I've built up a more convincing case for a 3-5-2 😉

I have A currently, and I personally much prefer it. More balanced, more flexible.

    Those picking Zamora:

I take it everyone knows he won't start, often if not at all. Okay, so this means that people will sell him inevitably at some point. If he has a higher ownership, more people sell so his price drops.

Would you rather have a player who may get the odd point here and there, but who's price continues to fall, or a player who won't start at all,but also will remain at 4.5?

Personally I see no point in either. But a player dropping in value would be worse as I would never play him and it would reduce my transfer funds. Still barking mind

he got 3 goals and 5 assists in his last 9 appearances last year in a run of:

WHA ast HUL che NEW car TOT FUL wba

if you benched him against Chelsea and Spurs, he would have got you 3 goals and 5 assists in 7 appearences 😉

not bad for a 6.5 mid eh? and of course he has a similar great run now - probably even better

and he is nailed on for them - and they have better attacking options around him to help

    My team right now:

    Speroni/Green
    Terry/Shaw/Rosenior/Shackell/Wisdom
    Hazard/Ramsey/Erik/De Jong/Siggy
    Rooney/Dzeko/Austin

I keep fidgeting with it and still can't find one I am satisfied with. I still have a bad taste in my mouth from Hazard's performance at the end of the season last year and I also feel I will regret not having Giroud.

      10 to 15 goals & 15 to 20 assists (i.e. his results from 2008/10)

    RMT

An RMT for those questioning (fair enough) my Zamora pick.

    Krul
    Shaw Luis Davies
Sanchez Hazard Mata De Jong Siggy
    Rooney Dzeko

    Bench: Elliot, Mariappa, Wisdom, Zamora

I have no intention of ever playing or requiring Zamora, or any 4.5 forward for that matter.

The midfield is a strong mix of the tried-and-tested and exciting newbies, with good flexibility. In case of catastrophe, I need only downgrade 1 of my 3 premium mids to albrighton, and upgrade Zamora straight to an 8.5 (Giroud/bony), thereby achieving the template 3-4-3 team.

Three top 6 defenses (not even sure Utd counts 😉 ) covered at the back.

    I'd appreciate your thoughts.

I have been doing that. My question is more on the merits of a 3-5-2 with a non-playing 3rd striker, versus a 3-4-3 with an 8.5 mil 3rd striker, albrighton and 2 4m defenders.

Squeeze in a forward who plays even if he'll generally be benched.

            Appreciate the response.

Although, it then comes down to whether I want to downgrade someone like de Jong to snodgrass or hazard to Fabregas in order to upgrade my 4.5 striker to a playing 5.5 (e.g nugent).

As per my argument below, I think that there may be more points to be gained by picking the better first XI players (de Jong instead of snodgrass) than there is on the single occasion where you may require the likely 2-point of your 3rd striker off the bench.

            I disagree.

If I was forced to choose a team for the season, and not permitted any changes, then yes of course I would have an all-playing front 8.

But assuming I WC in the first 8 weeks, which is likely, what are the chances that I have been dim-witted enough to have not made changes to inured players etc. that I will need my 3rd sub. But even if I did require my 3rd sub once, the 2 points I may have foregone by choosing a non-playing 4.5 striker instead of a 5.5 (someone like nugent) are far less of an opportunity cost than the 1 mil I have gained to upgrade from wisdom to Davies in my first XI playing EVERY week, with a much improved chance of a clean sheet EVERY week.

            The logic just doesn't follow.

Hi guys, I've been thinking about the merits of having a So'ton player from the start, until around GW12...

The plan forming in my head is to bench them in GW1 (or just play them, haven't decided yet, depends if I feel I can play a solid 4-4-2) then let them loose for an amazing run of fixtures...

I've been looking at Pelle and Marney as my 3rd fwd and 5th mid, but seeing that Tadic is on ALL set pieces, I'm tempted to go with Tadic & Zamora/VazTe instead...

The only downside to this is my 3rd fwd in a 3-5-2 situation isn't nailed on, but I plan to have my 4th defender as my main sub anyway, seeing as I believe there is better value/scoring potential in that position...

    Thoughts?

Mannone and Krul. The 2 most famous Geordie names. I promised myself I wouldn't fall into the Lamela trap again. Albrighton not sure about that one. Someone said that Duff was going to be superceded earlier by a new transfer. Costa has only had one good season. Rooney is past it and Wisdom may not start. Other than that good!

yeah that is interesting - why not use a quality keeper?

why only question is whether they can keep more cleanies than Cardiff did...caulker played all 38 games and only managed 122 points - around 3.2 ppg

if qpr could hit ten clean sheets - which with their defence is possible, then its a great buy
