The Community Round Up

The launch of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game has already sparked the emergence of the so-called “template team”, with squads made up of a small pool of favoured targets. This has prompted a raft of discussions in the Fantasy Football Scout community this week, as many search for that little bit of flair to help smash the template. Bonus points, as well as rotation strategies, were also the focus of much chatter and we look back on all these discussions, whilst also bringing up to date with the community leagues on offer:

The Community Articles

There’s little doubt that Billy Gilmore’s detailed look at the tweaked FPL Bonus Point System was amongst the most popular articles posted over the past seven days. In his extraordinary analysis, Billy takes a sample of games from last season to show how the revised BPS would have influenced the bonus point allocation. The results will certainly prove happy reading for those looking to invest in full backs and wingers.

Another issue vexing our community writers this week has been the abundance of choice in the game, with the major teams investing in a raft of new, potentially high scoring, players. The Puntmaster was on hand with an update of his new Premier League player analysis while Parm took a closer look at some key dilemmas such as the dilemma presented by the Arsenal midfield, now bolstered by the significance presence of Alexis Sanchez.

Rotation continues to come under the spotlight among our community scribes, with The Sarjeant being the latest to assess whether home and away rotation or focusing on fixture strength is the best policy for the season ahead. Another slab of essential pre-season reading.

The Hottest Topics

Each year, shortly after the launch of the FPL game, a similar pattern emerges; teams are drafted, template squads emerge and the urgent call for individualism selections turns from a whisper to a full blown battle cry.

Among those calling for the early template to be broken was Portsmouth Bubblejet via this cautionary post warning against following the herd and sticking up for our most maverick of Fantasy managers. Courtois in the Rye was another calling for Fantasy managers to go against the grain with his look at just why the consensus squad is doomed to fail.

Alexis Sanchez is undoubtedly a template favourite that’s already commanded huge ownership across the Fantasy games. At the time of writing he was the most owned player in FPL so far. But, asks Cynical Steve, is he really worth his £10.5m price tag?

At the other end of the scale, Hull’s new midfield recruit, Robert Snodgrass, is a popular target for those adhering to the template. However, according to our man on the Humber Jaizinho, the former Norwich player has a long way to go to justify his selection. Going by his man in the stand account of Hull’s friendly game against North Ferriby this week, Curtis Davies is far more deserving of template status.

A Chelsea defender is another prime asset and already a popular route, thanks, in no small part, to an eye catching set of early fixtures and a strong record of clean sheets under manager Jose Mourinho. The template dissenters arguing against their inclusion include Il Gladiatore, who wonders whether the likes of John Terry are deserving of essential status. Meanwhile, Mr Anonymous questioned whether new full-back Filipe Luis is nailed on to start.

At the time of writing almost a third of those who have registered to play FPL had drafted in £11.5m priced Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge, to cement his place in template forward lines. Irish Madrista took up the mantle of front line template buster this week, urging Fantasy managers to ignore expensive strikers and look to cheaper, lesser owned options such as Edin Dzeko or Olivier Giroud.

Promoted sides also offer the chance for Fantasy managers to take a punt. The Sarjeant returned to look at the three promoted sides’ clean sheet potential to put forward a good case for investing in QPR defenders as part of a home and away rotation strategy. He also took time to look at the potential hot prospects up top offered up by the promoted sides.

I even found myself, a renowned “Dullard” when it comes to squad selection, scanning the player list for alternatives to help break from the early favourite targets. My hot topic looked at creating a team focusing mainly on players from the ranks of United, City, Arsenal and Chelsea. This strict focus on title contenders becomes a differential in itself, with few Fantasy managers attempting such a collection. As Innsie pointed out, though, such a tactic would dramatically reduce interest in Burnley v Hull fixture. We can’t possibly have that.

Whether your team can be described as “template” or “maverick”, the FPL does, of course, offer us all a chance to start the selection process all over again thanks to the Wildcard. In our discussion on the best time to use the wildcard Fantasy Genius and Billy Gilmore revealed they plan to lay it down during the first international break of the season at the Gameweek 4 stage – a popular window. However, Moin is determined to cling on to it and use it after January to take advantage of the incoming double Gameweeks.

The Community Tournaments

Not surprisingly, we’re seeing a whole host of community leagues crop up as we head into August. Be sure to drop us a line at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk if you’ve got a league or tournament to plug.

First up this week, Keith Kiely is looking for community members to join his High Flighters FPL league (18100-24576). He is also running a H2H version (18100-90838). Meanwhile, Evilfuk has created a 2006 Veterans League (27-317) in FPL for those who have been playing the game since the 2006/7 season.

In addition, Thomass is running an FPL competition this season. For more details click here.

Suits = probably good if you are 20 or something (managed to watch 2 episodes)
Under the dome, not sure, watched one episode and wasn't totally convinced. Might have a look later if I have too much time.

      Others = no idea.

      Anyone watching Leftovers? Any good?

Am thinking of a 3-5-2 as Yaya's trolling cost me dear last year and I see this as the best way of getting him. Thoughts on this much appreciated:

    Mannone (Elliot)
    Shaw, Luis, Debuchy, (Wisdom), (Targett)
    Yaya, Mata, Hazard, Eriksen, Siggy
    Dzeko, Giroud, (Naismith)

Alternatively I can upgrade Jelly -> Dzeko by downgrading defense.

    @Champ

Not quite the same as your idea on Siggy rotation, but earlier I actually brought Crouch into my team with the idea being to rotate those two in an alternating 3-5-2/3-4-3...

Seeing that 6 of Crouch's 7 goals came at home last year, I might actually go with this, since it gives me both Mata and Ramsey, who I couldn't fit into a solid 3-4-3

    Haz Mata Ramsey Erik Siggy
    Roo Giroud/Dzeko Crouch

Still, the idea of having Crouch doesn't sit well with me... 😀

Are fantasy managers too fixated on player prices (for points potential)

Given the choice most managers appear to be spending every penny of their budgets in the belief thst this gives them the best team. There is a natural belief that a player with a higher price will result in a highrr points return

A quick look at last seasons points shows that the relationship was far from clear.
Many of the seasons best performers came from the mid to low range bracket , rather than the top
coleman Ramsay Toure Sturridge Speroni Mannone Gerrard LAllana Mirallas Sterling Giroud Lambert etc

My team currently has 2.5 sitting in the bank as have not automatically chosen high value players, and am comfortable with many of the lower price options. For example would much rather have Siggi than Silva, even though i could afford the swap.
Its the same across all positions , more expensive dosent always mean better

Earlier someone with 5m to spend on a defender was stressing because he couldnt find a decent one he didnt already have. He had made the mistake of closing his mind to cheaper options , as was too price fixated.

Take off the blinkers and ot becomes much easier to plan a decent team

It's like investing in stocks though. If you put your money in there's potential it will increase, so you can then buy more players if/when you choose to switch that player. If you leave a large amount in the bank it's good for flexibility but that amount won't increase.

Both strategies can work but I personally prefer to spend as much as possible (I is till have 0.5 itb though - just because I think my team is better than what I can get with 100m spent anyway).

While I agree to an extent last season was an exception with the top price midf/forwards not scoring highly for various reasons

      RVP, Aguero, Silva,Walcott- injury
Mata, Lampard - form / rotation
Bale was top price midf anf left

      There are others

The season before on the other if you didn't have RVP or Bale you were nowhere

It's true that there are always players who will prove point magnets for low price but they often come out of the blue. For instance who would have had Ramsey in their initial squad last season, michu the year before of Adam before tha

I have to disagree. How many people would have picked Ramsey, toure, lallana, speroni, Mannone of indeed the majority of the options you listed above as mid-price options which came good before the season started?

While it is obviously best to buy first and foremost based on the expectation of good points return, which is what you appear to have done, you are banking on players that have an equal and in fact (as most would argue) lower chance of overall success.

You might get lucky and amongst your differentials find a hidden gem, but everybody will be all over them by Week 3 anyway if they end up performing spectacularly. But the risk is greater than the reward.

Triggerlips, I'm interested in what your team currently looks like.

I had every intention to avoid players who have had very short off-seasons due to the World Cup and build around a small core of star midfield players with decent prices who are perfectly positioned to start fast as they didn't go to Brazil i.e. Ramsey, Eriksen & Nasri. Also I wanted to avoid buying more than two players who have either switched clubs in the off-season or whose team has been promoted and limit that to one if they came from abroad.

A few weeks later and Ramsey is Sanchez, Nasri is Hazard and I've done the RVP hokey-cokey (before firmly deciding to give him a very wide steer and to go with Rooney).

The ticker is key to what I end up doing. It won't be 'punty' but unfashionable players like Jonny Evans appeal more to me than the likes of Luke Shaw both as a differential and because he's cheaper and I think he's more likely to gain BAP's (if he stays fit).

    Speroni Myhill

    Fabregas Mata Ramsey Siggy Albrighton
    Costa Rooney Dzeko

Anything you would change? Other than obviously Verm if he doesn't go to United.

Yea that is my problem. At the back with Verm and luis. Going to have to come to a conclusion about that at some point but either way needs to be a Chelsea defender and a ManU defender I think. But not sure who it can be...

Re Shaw the more I think about it the more doubts I have, both for United and FPL. He's a brilliant traditional LB. But his strength is defending rather than going forward. Worried the LWB won't suit him or at the very least won't play to his strengths. And thus won't yield points worthy of opting for him rather than De Gea for half mil less.

The problem with De Gea at half a mil less is that he's a mil more than you need to spend.

Jones may be the wiser move.

I'm quite happy being in the minority if the majority is going for a Krul/Mannone rotation.

Pride gets you nothing in this game, most will have a United defender so your 'different' move would be covered and you will be 1m lighter.

Because you are trying to go against the grain but gain nothing as everyonr will have United covered in defence, if you want to be different than surely you go for someone really different like Hart who most are staying away from?

People with a combo spend 9m you spend 9.5 if your second is a non playing 4m, poor tactic and you dont see the bigger picture.

Foster and Krul is where its at.

So there you go it's half a mil more rather than a full mil. And I'm not going against the grain. It's a clear decision between Shaw and De Gea because as I'll have Rooney and Mata there's only room for one more. I see plenty of good options in defense. It's about weighing who I think will score more and against the monetary value. And frankly, I'll have Myhill as my backup as I expect him to be a starter sooner rather than later just like last season. And if it weren't him it'd be Elliott.

Half a mil and 14 players instead of 15, better hope LVG dont decide to rest him after a long CL flight or they have a game cancelled.

                  Cool thinking process though.

Agree about Shaw though, had him in since it opened and have taken him out now, just don't see Colemanesque returns from him to justify it, maybe next year or the year after but he still needs to adapt to the step up.

"He [Chambers] is a player I wanted because I rated his quality and intelligence. He is only 19 and can play at centre-back, right-back and central midfield. I hope he will give us competition for the players in those three positions."
