The Community Round Up

The launch of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game has already sparked the emergence of the so-called “template team”, with squads made up of a small pool of favoured targets. This has prompted a raft of discussions in the Fantasy Football Scout community this week, as many search for that little bit of flair to help smash the template. Bonus points, as well as rotation strategies, were also the focus of much chatter and we look back on all these discussions, whilst also bringing up to date with the community leagues on offer:

The Community Articles

There’s little doubt that Billy Gilmore’s detailed look at the tweaked FPL Bonus Point System was amongst the most popular articles posted over the past seven days. In his extraordinary analysis, Billy takes a sample of games from last season to show how the revised BPS would have influenced the bonus point allocation. The results will certainly prove happy reading for those looking to invest in full backs and wingers.

Another issue vexing our community writers this week has been the abundance of choice in the game, with the major teams investing in a raft of new, potentially high scoring, players. The Puntmaster was on hand with an update of his new Premier League player analysis while Parm took a closer look at some key dilemmas such as the dilemma presented by the Arsenal midfield, now bolstered by the significance presence of Alexis Sanchez.

Rotation continues to come under the spotlight among our community scribes, with The Sarjeant being the latest to assess whether home and away rotation or focusing on fixture strength is the best policy for the season ahead. Another slab of essential pre-season reading.

The Hottest Topics

Each year, shortly after the launch of the FPL game, a similar pattern emerges; teams are drafted, template squads emerge and the urgent call for individualism selections turns from a whisper to a full blown battle cry.

Among those calling for the early template to be broken was Portsmouth Bubblejet via this cautionary post warning against following the herd and sticking up for our most maverick of Fantasy managers. Courtois in the Rye was another calling for Fantasy managers to go against the grain with his look at just why the consensus squad is doomed to fail.

Alexis Sanchez is undoubtedly a template favourite that’s already commanded huge ownership across the Fantasy games. At the time of writing he was the most owned player in FPL so far. But, asks Cynical Steve, is he really worth his £10.5m price tag?

At the other end of the scale, Hull’s new midfield recruit, Robert Snodgrass, is a popular target for those adhering to the template. However, according to our man on the Humber Jaizinho, the former Norwich player has a long way to go to justify his selection. Going by his man in the stand account of Hull’s friendly game against North Ferriby this week, Curtis Davies is far more deserving of template status.

A Chelsea defender is another prime asset and already a popular route, thanks, in no small part, to an eye catching set of early fixtures and a strong record of clean sheets under manager Jose Mourinho. The template dissenters arguing against their inclusion include Il Gladiatore, who wonders whether the likes of John Terry are deserving of essential status. Meanwhile, Mr Anonymous questioned whether new full-back Filipe Luis is nailed on to start.

At the time of writing almost a third of those who have registered to play FPL had drafted in £11.5m priced Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge, to cement his place in template forward lines. Irish Madrista took up the mantle of front line template buster this week, urging Fantasy managers to ignore expensive strikers and look to cheaper, lesser owned options such as Edin Dzeko or Olivier Giroud.

Promoted sides also offer the chance for Fantasy managers to take a punt. The Sarjeant returned to look at the three promoted sides’ clean sheet potential to put forward a good case for investing in QPR defenders as part of a home and away rotation strategy. He also took time to look at the potential hot prospects up top offered up by the promoted sides.

I even found myself, a renowned “Dullard” when it comes to squad selection, scanning the player list for alternatives to help break from the early favourite targets. My hot topic looked at creating a team focusing mainly on players from the ranks of United, City, Arsenal and Chelsea. This strict focus on title contenders becomes a differential in itself, with few Fantasy managers attempting such a collection. As Innsie pointed out, though, such a tactic would dramatically reduce interest in Burnley v Hull fixture. We can’t possibly have that.

Whether your team can be described as “template” or “maverick”, the FPL does, of course, offer us all a chance to start the selection process all over again thanks to the Wildcard. In our discussion on the best time to use the wildcard Fantasy Genius and Billy Gilmore revealed they plan to lay it down during the first international break of the season at the Gameweek 4 stage – a popular window. However, Moin is determined to cling on to it and use it after January to take advantage of the incoming double Gameweeks.

The Community Tournaments

Not surprisingly, we’re seeing a whole host of community leagues crop up as we head into August. Be sure to drop us a line at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk if you’ve got a league or tournament to plug.

First up this week, Keith Kiely is looking for community members to join his High Flighters FPL league (18100-24576). He is also running a H2H version (18100-90838). Meanwhile, Evilfuk has created a 2006 Veterans League (27-317) in FPL for those who have been playing the game since the 2006/7 season.

In addition, Thomass is running an FPL competition this season. For more details click here.

Southampton are clearly in a massive state of flux. By the start of next season, it's likely their team will be very different to the one that did so well last year.

Despite this, I'm still eyeing up a few of their players due to attractive prices, and good fixtures. This may be due to rose-tinted glasses from the last couple of seasons, where I have always found good value (Lambert / Lallana / Lovren etc) from the team. I'd be curious to know what the community thinks of Southampton this season.

    Predicted finishing position?

Are you including any of their players from week 1?

Do you expect them to struggle initially while they gel?

      Predicted finish of 12th

I'm holding off on Tadic until I've seen him play vs Liverpool. Pelle could go either way but you can afford to wait until week 2 if necessary.

Wouldn't go anywhere near our defence without Lovren

Lovren has the potential to be world class. Liverpool fans should stop moaning about the money they've spent on him

Tadic is in my current draft on the strength of his record over the last few seasons, and the good fixtures for the Saints. However, the plan of not having him, and assessing based on performances does seem more sensible. As we all know it is a marathon not a sprint, and I usually get off to a shocking start by trying to be too clever. If the new signings do hit the ground running they can always be drafted in in week 2 to 4 or so.

While its a big chunk of cash I'm very glad we've got him. I couldn't see anyone else with the potential to be that good we could sign for less. And he comes with premier league experience. There were only a handful of centre backs better than him in the prem last season, mostly over 30. Terry, Distin, Kompany, Koscielny, maybe Cahill.

I do feel sorry for Southampton, they've just been unlucky that Markus Liebherr died, and the fact his daughter isn't happy putting much money into the club

It's difficult, since Liebherr died and Cortese left the current owners from what I've heard are no longer willing to fund the club so they can compete, the idea was to push Southampton as far as possible, now they just want to run the club like a business, that's why Lallana left, I think he was happy to stay so long as there was an aspiration to do well, now they're just happy to stay where they are, that's why Koeman was brought in, so all in all I don't predict a great season, hopefully for their sake though a solid one.

Valid points - I think the main concern is the lack of board transparency. The fans don't really have any idea concerning the long term aspirations of the club.

Koeman, Tadic and Pelle need to be given a chance. If we manage to sign any of Vlaar, De Vrij, rojo or any other rumours then things suddenly look a lot better for us

There was an interesting programme on Sky Sports last season in which Les Reid spoke at great length about Southamptons plans & philosophy. I won't bore you but it was very interesting and made complete sense.
In short, there will be youngsters coming through and high profit potential signings. From what Reid said, Koeman comes in as a coach and works within the system & guidelines already in place an not the other way round. Whether this works remains to be seen as they have lost the core of their side but Les Reid was adamant he system will work and is the only long term solution for a succesfull Southampton.

It's not about working with a tight budget more a realisation that they can't compete at the highest financial level. Instead, trust in their scouting system and especially in their coaching system. It's a simple ideal and more teams should implement it imo.
In Scotland, look what happened to my team Rangers chasing the golden dream, Celtic I hate to say have decided to trust in their scouting and take a gamble on many potentials. That wasn't Lennon.. or Strachan.. that's from above..and fair play to them.

Not to say it isn't a fine system, but it's difficult to compete with youth year in year out, it's more so that Southampton are comfortable to be run like a business and stay where they are.

It was also said that we wouldn't sell until a new manager was in place...

I'm not panicking. Our youth system is the best in the country and I see Isgrove, McQueen and Reed all breaking through this season. I think the panic is fuelled by the fact that the entire spine of everything that was good last season has been ripped out and there are a lot of question marks hanging over the club until the season gets going and the transfer window shuts

I saw their preseason games. They look good with the new players Pelle & Tadic! Also look out for Clyne. With the new BPS for crosses & key passes he will be a good option IMO. Tadic also has all the set pieces so he will score points with their easy fixtures after Liverpool's game thats for sure!

He's back in training now so I guess he'll be available for selection from the first game, He'll get game time from the bench as he can play a number of positions but he won't be a starter from the off unless there are a number of injuries in a few positions.

IT'S DONE, I have reached my tinkering nirvana:

    begovic, 4M
    jones, mariappa, coloccini, simpson, 4M
    hazard, ramsey, mata, sigurdsson, marney
    rooney, costa, bony

I am going to keep an eye on mariappa's chances of starting, if he isn't going to get the nod then I will do hazard --> fabregas! and then mariappa --> ward and jones --> shaw/luis.

    Do you like it?

Yes, it certainly is. But a few weeks of chasing the cash should find some budget for a big hitter in there.

Excellent. A lot of research and wasted hours here. Just need a 4M starter in defence and maybe a punt in fabregas over hazard anyway.

Nice, especially up top, though you should really research getting the best out of a low budget defense, try and make it work don't just assume something will come along.

The 4M you mean? Yeah, I realise it's risky... That's why I have hazard --> fabregas up my sleeve. Really don't wanna be without his penalties atm though.

Would someone care to pick this apart for me?
    0.5m under budget.

    Begovic / Myhill
    MUN 5.5 / B Davies / N Taylor / Chester / Targett
    Hazard / Mata / Ramsey / Eriksen / Sigurdsson
    Rooney / Giroud / Austin

Flipping between Jones and Evans at the moment for the 5.5 defender. Would help if Man U made a signing really.
This gives me a solid 9 players who I'd play every week, with a rotation on Taylor / Chester and Sigurdsson / Austin.

    Any thoughts please?

Probably, but if they recruit from the Premiership (ie Vermaelen) he'd be in my team straight away. Even though I'd love to keep him at Arsenal.

Maybe use the extra 0.5m on Shaw?

You might as well save the money on Austin and play a 4.5 forward, using the money to upgrade your defence. You're going to want to play that midfield 5 week in, week out.

I'm not 100% convinced yet by Sigurdsson. He's got the potential to be brilliant, but I just have the nagging feeling spurs may have ruined him a little. Austin is my backup for that I suppose.

If he sets the world on fire however, then Austin out is the transfer to make after a couple of weeks for sure.

Fair enough. I'm planning to play 3-5-2 or 4-4-2 so I don't want the complication of having to think about the third striker.

And I'm reasonably confident Siggy will prove to be one of the best value players this season.

    Luis Cameron Simpson N.Taylor Mariappa

So in the Utd game, Rooney and Mata both get a goal from open play, and Rooney scored from the spot too.

Might have to scrap my idea of getting Costa GW1 and 2 then swapping to Rooney. If I want Mata too it means saying farewell to Yaya. Decisions
