The Rate My Team Discussion

With so many of you seeking advice on their teams before August 16, we thought it would prudent to run a daily community article to provide a dedicated focus for “Rate My Team” (RMT) requests.

Each day ahead of the new season, we’ll select one of the Fantasy Football Scout team and post up their own RMT request to open up discussion and encourage others to post their own. We’ll turn the comments over to you to provide a useful place for those seeking advice and highlight some of the key decisions under deliberation.

Please nudge those posting RMTs in other articles to visit this daily RMT article. Also, when posting requests, please remember to be courteous to those who take the time to help out. Equally, if you’re an experienced Fantasy manager with some views on initial line-ups, take time out to dip in and contribute – the Fantasy Football Scout team will be doing their upmost to offer their feedback as the discussion develops throughout the day.

De Gea/Hamer

Mariappa, Wisdom, Davies, Debuchy, Terry

Diego Costa, Rooney, Diouf

Demi says he is pretty set on having David De Gea and a non-playing keeper, and it’s one of the few positions that have remained constant in all his drafts. Juan Mata, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Christian Eriksen and Eden Hazard have all featured strongly in most of his thoughts too, but, apparently, he could be persuaded to start the season with Cesc Fabregas and use the extra cash to upgrade his defence. Speaking of which, John Terry is the one certainty in Demi’s rearguard: the others are more doubtful. Demi is currently undecided as to whether to keep an Arsenal defender in his side, with Debuchy his current preferred selection.

Up front, Wayne Rooney is locked in, but Demi has been really struggling for inspiration on the other two forward spots. Diego Costa seems as good as any option for the first three or four games; he’s not keen on Olivier Giroud or Edin Dzeko with their respective fixtures. Would he be better off downgrading Costa and instead focusing on solidifying his defence?

    Sturridge vice (not that it should matter). Solid team but where it says Snodgrass it should read Sigurdsson. Also I'm a Bojan hater, would rather find the money for Austin, but I seem to be something of an island in that regard.

      Thanks for the advice, I am not sure how to find the money for Austin (I like him too and QPR have goodish opening fixtures) as my defence is borderline and I can't see a midfielder to downgrade.
      
      I like Siggy and i'm almost certain my GW2 move will be to swap Snod for Siggy but I can't fathom playing him in GW1 against MUFC?

      Austin?...as a veteran you must remember Sylvain Ebanks-Blake...once in a while a Championship striker comes through and does well but they're thin on the ground...can't say I'm keen on Bojan but he has fixtures, rotates with Siggi and he might be better than Albrighton if he's your cheapest attacker

        I don't remember Ebanks-Blake particularly well but I do in fact recall a certain Mr. R. Lambert. Is Austin going to be another Lambert? Who can tell. Really though none of the strikers costing less than 10 appeal much to me and since I can't have three of those without gutting the rest of my team I think Austin is the most promising cheapie. At least he'll actually play as a striker, unlike Bojan

        Austin v Bojan is a dilemma I'm facing too. Both have strong opening fixtures, and both have been playing well in preseason. Bojan has faced much better competition during said preseason, but he doesn't have much of a scoring track record anywhere he's been (double digits as a teenager in his first season for Barca, but not much since and only four in the goal-wild Eredivisie last year).

    Lamela could easily become Eriksen over the next 10 days. I just feel Lamela has the potential to explode. However, I do accept Eriksen will probably win in terms of consistency, if only due to set pieces.
    
    Is the defence OK?

      Not a huge fan of Clyne but I get his merit-- Just don't buy the hype about his attacking potential. A DEF from Chelsea or United is essential for the first couple of games is essential IMO.
      
      Love the Ward pick, own him myself and don't see him leaving my team barring injury. Taylor is probably the most nailed on 4.5 DEF so he saves you some money and the Wisdom/Cameron nailed-on-ness will be resolved in time for you to make transfers [if needed].
      
      I think your defense works yo.

  (a) if you had Hazard + Costa you could do the big switch to 2 Liverpool players when the time is right...you can't do that
  (b) my team is a lot different to yours in small ways but the real big difference is that I have Dzeko and you have Ramsey...I'm considering a structure like yours but I keep thinking how many good strikers there are for £8.5m and below

      I would personally have Clyne over Huth and just play your 3 defenders from wk 2 making sure your bench defenders r playing every week.

  I personally would hesitate to spend that much in defence, but you've got 3 defenders with a very strong goal threat to be fair, and your mids haven't suffered.

    yes I hesitated too but after Baines and Vert kept being swapped in and out I thought I would try a team with both in.
    Che defender a must opening fix I feel too. So went with goal threat in defence.
    
    Im happy starting with Austin on pens I think too. Other options r Jelavic,Long, Ideye, Bojan,Nugent.

    I know everton fix don't start off too well but if u have Baines u gotta have him from the start, always a threat.
    Lukaku-history says play him for harder fix. plus tnewly transferred, he will be up for it.
    
    I don't like Ars fix to start off with so I may drop Ramsey for Erikson or Lamela and use the cash to upgrade Begovic > DeGea and O' Shea to Clyne
    How does that sound?

  Good keepers for the price.
  Defence has nice fixtures for the first 10 weeks so it's OK.
  Midfield is too cheap imo so I'd downgrade a striker and upgrade Tadic/Sigurdsson to Sanchez or Hazard.

  For 9m I'd rather rotate two 4.5m keepers.
  Solid defence apart from Bartley. Not definitely nailed on but if he is then he's a good pick.

  I've only watched one pre season city game and Jovetic shone. Could there be some competition for Dzeko here?
  Otherwise solid. I personally think stoke's defence will crack, looking at their preseason scores and have seen the 'hughes' impact on other teams before. If you disagree though, fair enough 🙂

  It's OK but I don't like double Stoke defence plus the defence is too cheap so I recommend sacrificing one of the big 6 and upgrade it.

Here's my team

Green, Murphy
Vertonghen, Clyne, Ward, Naylor, Wisdom
Hazard, Mata, Sanchez, Siggy, JWP
Rooney, Costa, Bojan

The weak links are obviously Bojan and JWP - but both could have decent seasons. I would like to hold on to my attacking big hitters so not much wiggle room there.
The only option is to go JWP > 4.5 and Bojan > Austin. But I want to take a punt on Bojan I think.

  You may struggle GW1 with Swans playing MUFC, weak bench too & Wisdom unlikely to play. Solid other than that, maybe downgrade Hazard to Fabregas and upgrade Albrighton/Wisdom?

  - I'd steer clear of Villa players and particularly defence.
  - Luis - we don't know how nailed he is.
  - I think Evans is a better pick than Jones.

  Very similar to mine - but I've opted for a stronger midfield (Hazard/Sterling/Ramsey) and a cheaper defence. Question you face is whether you think you'll get more points from Terry/mid-priced MF or top-priced MF/cheap DF.

De Gea, Myhill
Davies, Chester, Huth, Debuchy, Wisdom
Sánchez, Mata, Sigurdsson, Lamela, Albrighton
Rooney, Diego Costa, Pellè

Obviously Lamela is a punt, one I am willing to take though. Will ship him out quickly if his preseason form turns out to be a false dawn. Not overly happy with my defense - any suggestions on how I might change it without downgrading elsewhere?
