The Watchlist Updated – Gameweek 1

Our Watchlist rankings, offering player recommendations over the next four-to-six Gameweeks, returns to the site again today. With the season only days away, a number of World Cup stars are still struggling for fitness and we subsequently steer clear of the doubts and place our faith in one or two of the form players over the close-season action:

Unsurprisingly, United and Chelsea dominate our early thoughts – both clubs have shown strong form over the pre-season and have the early fixtures to benefit. Louis Van Gaal’s men face just one of last term’s top eight in the first eight Gameweeks and approach the season with a 100% summer record – David de Gea’s security of starts earn him top spot for keepers, whilst Phil Jones gets the nod due to the fact that he’s the only centre-half who has yet to pick up an injury or knock over the recent action.

Juan Mata’s role behind the front two in a 3-4-1-2 brings him to the summit of the midfielders – with a full pre-season behind him, the Spaniard is looking to continue the form which harvested six goals, five assists and 15 bonus points in 15 appearances for the Old Trafford outfit. At 9.0, Mata looks a convincing double-up option with Wayne Rooney for those looking to load up on the Red Devils – Rooney’s ownership is now 44% and rising, making him the most popular pick by some distance in FPL right now, while Robin van Persie gets back to full fitness.

Ashley Young also comes into contention at 5.5 – fielded as a wing-back, he’s scored three times over the summer and is likely to benefit from injuries to the likes of Luke Shaw, Rafael and Antonio Valencia.

Over at the Bridge, Diego Costa’s four goals and three assists over the summer sum up his instant impact at Chelsea. Now sitting in 30% of teams, his arrival could be the final piece of the jigsaw for Jose Mourinho – the Blues fired more shots than any other side last season but a lack of clinical edge proved costly to their title tilt.

With games against Burnley, Leicester, Swansea and Villa in the first six, Eden Hazard and Branislav Ivanovic also feature prominently in their respective positions – we reckon the Belgian will start this weekend, despite a relative lack of pre-season. Cesc Fabregas is a cheaper alternative to Hazard at 9.0 to 10.0, though the concern is that, as we’ve seen in pre-season, Mourinho can utilise him in the double-pivot as well as in “the hole” behind Costa.

Aside from the usual suspects, there are some notable options in the upper echelons of our first Watchlist. Stoke’s Asmir Begovic sits second for stoppers – with so much uncertainty over Mark Hughes’ defence, the 5.0-priced Bosnian offers a nailed-on option between the posts and faces only three of last season’s top eight in the opening 12 Gameweeks.

For the time being, Joel Ward (5.0) is our Palace defender of choice ahead of home games against West Ham, Burnley and Leicester in the first six. There’s every chance that we could turn our attentions to Martin Kelly if his proposed move from Liverpool goes through – at 4.5, the latter would be the cheapest option amongst Tony Pulis’ defence, with Ward expected to shift left to accommodate the new boy.

Steven Caulker’s goal threat brings the new QPR man into consideration. The centre-half notched five times last season for Cardiff and had more attempts in the box than any defender – with home games against Hull, Sunderland and Stoke in the first five, we’re backing the big centre-half to quickly prosper.

In midfield, the usual suspects dominate the main positions. Delve deeper, though, and mid-price options such as Gylfi Sigurdsson, Jason Puncheon and Dusan Tadic are all bubbling under – opening trips to United, Arsenal and Liverpool temper their initial appeal but all three should rise in our estimations from next week onwards. Tadic has been fielded wide in a front three by Ronald Koeman and with dead-ball duties to further his appeal, faces only one of last season’s top eight from Gameweek 2-12 and, at 7.5, should be a key player for the new-look Saints.

Up top, Rooney, Costa and Daniel Sturridge – a front three that would certainly test our £100m budgets – lead the way. City’s Stevan Jovetic tucks in just behind the trio on the back of five goals over pre-season – with Alvaro Negredo and both Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko yet to retain their match fitness, Jovetic, at 8.0, certainly offer an in-form route into the champions attack for the time being, though it’s best to plan an exit route in preparation for Aguero’s return to the fold.

While the Montenegro star is more of a short-term option, Stoke’s Bojan Krkic seems nailed-on by comparison and has the potential to be a bargain buy. Three goals over pre-season, allied with a price tag of just 5.5 and the Potters’ above-mentioned schedule over the first 12 Gameweeks makes the former Barcelona man the standout option in the budget bracket right now.

I respectfully disagree with some of the defenders watchlist.

    Ivanovic - A sure starter?
Davies - Why not Chester for 4.5m?
Shawcross - 5.5m for defender from a team that got 9 CSs last year? Less than Hull and Newcastle...
    Naughton - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/tottenham-hotspur/11029566/Tottenham-Hotspur-open-to-offers-for-11-players-in-desperate-attempt-to-cut-squad.html
Lovren - 5.5m in a team who had a poor defence last year, and with poor fixtures
Caulker - 5.0m for a QPR defender. I understand the reasoning here though, goal threat. Is it enough? Are goals predictable?
Ward - Why not Kelly? He probably won't make the Arsenal game, but do you want him then?

Very much agreed apart from Ivan. I think he is very safe due to Mourinho Likening, Remember it was cole who was dropped and Azpi shifted to LB. Ivan wasn't that good last season its just Jose likes him and Davies is only CB nailed on with Harry and Bruce chester is hardly nailed on

Same here, I think they'll be more restrained than last season, their poor defending was as much to do with their gung-ho approach as the players, people forget that in rodger's first season liverpool finished with 16(?) clean sheets which was one of the best in the league so it's like he can't get a team to defend.

Shawcross is an old FFS favourite from the days when he used to get goals. He's probably the most certain starter in the Stoke back four though, and they're usually a good bet for home clean sheets.

Davies is a better defender than Chester with more goal threat.

Mostly agree, but I think it makes sense to wait for Kelly's transfer to actually go through before putting him on there. Also Lovren is a decent pick, they may well be more defensive without Suarez (remember the start of last season?), and apart from GW 2 and 3, their fixtures are excellent for the first four months of the season.

I would take that telegraph article of spurs putting these 11 players up for sale with a mountain of salt. Especially when they are suggesting that Capoue is one of those being shipped out, since he has been one of our best players in preseason. So the naughton thing isn't really a certain.

Close to final line up. Playing with 2 options what do you think?
    Manone/Krul
    Debuchy/Flipe Luis/Ward/Collins/Bartley
Erikksen/Ramsey/Mata/Siggy/El Ahamadi (or any 4.5 mid)
    Rooney/Dzeko/Costa

    versus

    Manone/Krul
    Debuchy/Caulker/Rosienor/Ward/Bartley
    Erikksen/Ramsey/Mata/Siggy/Young
    Rooney/Dzeko/Costa

Option 1 is 2 banker def (Debuchy & Luis), 2 to rotate (Ward & Collins) and a bench warmer with a mid benchwarmer. Option 2 is 1 banker, 3 rotating def and Young in midfield for the opening GWs whilst Utd injuries and good fixtures last but means one mid to prem priced player benched each week in midfield or upfront.

Some yays and nays, will write some more later:

    Ashley Young

    Yay:
    1. He is in crazy form, playing great with super confidence.
    2. United have some easy fixtures, so even if he is playing as a LWB he will be attacking much more than defending, having a 3 back line who can back him up.
    3. He has the stamina to play in that role and stay attacking throughout the game.
    4. He costs 5.5.
    5. He has a goal and 3 assists in preseason.
    6. His crossings have been lethal.
    7. He takes some set pieces.
    8. Man Utd has attacked more from the wings than through the middle in preseason so far.
    9. He can play both LWB and RWB.
    10. Both Shaw and Valencia have been injured and probably unfit as well.
    11. Fixtures

    Nay:
    1. Preseason has fooled us before.
    2. One bad game may get him benched.
    3. Only 3 United spots in team.

    Verdict: In my team

    Eden Hazard:

    Yay:
    1. Has been a consistent point machine in the PL previous seasons.
    2. Probably the most nailed on Chelsea player.
    3. Probably takes penalties and some set pieces.
    4. Seems to be getting his form back.
    5. Good price/points ratio.
    6. Finally has a forward he can work with.
    7. World class player when fit and in-form.
    8. Fixtures

    Nay:
    1. Bad WC, not in the best form.
    2. Defensive duties may limit his full attacking potential.
    3. Fabregas and Oscar cheaper, but can they outscore Hazard?

    Verdict: Still unsure

    Jordan Henderson

    Yay:

    1. Sure starter.
    2. Brendan Rodgers predicting he will score 10+ this season.
    3. Playing in an attacking team.
    4. Has been steadily improving for a while now.
    5. Looks confident.
    6. Costs 6.0.

    Nay:

    1. Plays somewhat deep.
    2. Sturridge, Sterling, Coutinho all better attacking options in Liverpool.
    3. A lot of good mids this year and only 5 places to fill.
    4. Fixtures.

    Verdict: Not in my team

    Daniel Sturridge

    Yay:

    1. Suarez is gone, may score even more this year (see no.1 Nay).
    2. 2nd most scored goals last season.
    3. Not much competition, nailed on starter.
    4. Good midfield that could provide him the assists.
    5. Very clinical finisher.
    6. Selfish (may score more), see no. 6 Nay*.

    Nay:

    1. Suarez is gone, team losing attacking potential and therefore may affect Sturridge goalscoring negatively as well
    2. Sterling almost plays as a 2nd forward and at 8.5 can prove to be better price/points value.
    3. Injury prone.
    4. Champions League risk of rotation + injury.
    5. Fixtures
    6. Selfish (may lose some potential assist points).

Verdict: Sterling taking the Liverpool spot in my team

2 goals and 8 assists over the last 2 years, season before was better, has missed a huge amount of time due to injury and probably being out of favour. I just can't see how playing well in in pre season makes him a decent choice.

Is it the same Young that everyone laughs at and scolds for diving all the time, I just don't get the attraction.

Not a bad punt i think.

GW1 is all about getting who will score in GW1 and you will have to get him in to catch the 0.3 rise.

If he scores you could be on to a good transfer free rise. But high ownership means if he blanks he may drop 0.3

Thinking of setting up an 'Early Doors' cup - similar to one I ran last year for FFS non-qualifiers.

Would be in a CL format, 32 places up for grabs, group stages then knockouts. Will all be on a spreadsheet for you to view at your convenience.

If you're interested drop me an email at fantasyfootballaz7@gmail.com with your fpl ID

I'm sure it will get a mention on the Community Round Up and will be a chance to get some early silverware! 🙂

if he does nothing in an easy home game on gw1, there might be an avalanche of sales and price drop.

He was sharing time with Shaw for a wing back spot over the pre season. With Shaw out for 3 weeks and already under a fitness cloud before that Young should get a decent run at the start.

A wingback is a hybrid mid. They are the only aspect of the team to supply width and majority of crosses.

He will get forward as he has 3 CBs behind to defend him.
