The Digest – Gameweek 2

We take out final glance back at Gameweek 2 this lunchtime. City’s forgotten forward and Tottenham’s form under the new man in charge come under discussion, whilst we also look at the need to afford our players the chance to find their feet before pressing the “transfer out” button.

The Player

Stevan Jovetic’s double at home to Liverpool brings the City forward into focus after last night’s win over the Merseysiders. There were concerns surrounding the Montenegro man’s pitch time as Sergio Aguero edged towards full fitness but he was once again handed a start alongside Edin Dzeko and displayed the type of deadly finishing that served up 27 goals, in addition to 12 assists, over his final two years in Italy with Fiorentina.

Despite scoring five times in pre-season, Jovetic was largely overlooked as the campaign got underway and sat in less than 5% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) teams for the encounter with Brendan Rodgers’ side. By the time the match finished, he’d leapt onto Fantasy radars with a two-goal salvo that earned his manager’s post-match praise and, with a home clash against travel-sick Stoke up next, seems poised for major investment.

Granted, as the campaign unfolds, there’s no doubt that Jovetic will succumb to his manager’s rotational whims but right now, the situation seems in his favour. With Alvaro Negredo injured, Aguero not yet 100% and Dzeko limping off with a leg problem last night, he certainly looks a strong contender for our three-man frontlines. At a time when many of the mid-price frontmen (Emmanuel Adebayor aside) have failed to convince, Jovetic, at just 7.9 in FPL, looks a very tempting route into an attack that racked up 101 goals in its way to the title last term.

The Team

A 4-0 demolition of QPR in Mauricio Pochettino’s first home match at the Tottenham helm underlined the Fantasy potential on offer at the north London club. The Argentine’s impact has been immediate since rolling up to the Lane and his high pressing approach is already reaping reward, offering Fantasy managers prospects right across the pitch.

Whilst the second half of last season saw Christian Eriksen as the sole option in the Spurs midfield, Pochettino’s arrival looks to have furthered our options in the centre of the park. Nacer Chadli managed a single goal last season and has already bettered that tally with a brace against Harry Redknapp’s side – priced at just 6.0 in FPL, the Belgian looks a real mid-price alternative if he can nail down a starting berth in the attacking midfield three. Erik Lamela’s pair of assists suggests he, too, could be set for a turnaround in fortunes, while Emmanuel Adebayor could be the pick of the mid-price forwards if he kicks on from his goal and assist against the R’s.

At the back, Spurs have been quick to hint at the resilience that helped Southampton earn 15 shut-outs under Pellegrini in 2013/14. Back-to-back goals from Eric Dier has ensured the summer signing earns most of the Fantasy attention as his ownership climbs past 10%, though it’s yet to be seen just where he stands in the pecking order once Pochettino has a fully-fit quota of defenders to choose from. Jan Vertonghen is a pricier option but if his manager’s magic touch can unlock the goal threat that saw him net five times in his debut season, the Belgian could be another Tottenham alternative arriving on our radars shortly.

The Talking Point

Jovetic’s double against Liverpool merely underlines the need to afford our squads a little more patience as the season gets up and running. For some, weeks of careful planning and preparation were thrown to one side after Gameweek 1, as more than 152,000 wildcards were wielded after just a single round of action.

After their win over Newcastle, City were poised for three home matches in four, yet Jovetic, as their form forward (and the only one with a full pre-season behind him), was cast aside by over 24,000 Fantasy managers after blanking at St James’ Park and suffered a drop in price. At such a favourable cost, the scramble is now on for his signature ahead of the Stoke clash, with over 76,000 already transferring him in.

In midfield, many lost patience with Juan Mata and Eden Hazard – two proven Premier League big-hitters. Offloaded by 94,000 FPL owners last week, Mata subsequently notched his seventh goal in eight league outings in the 1-1 draw at Sunderland. Hazard, meanwhile, was sold by nearly 50,000 managers ahead of a plum home clash against Leicester – bearing in mind the Belgian had scored 10 of his 14 strikes at the Bridge last season, there was something of an inevitability about his goal against The Foxes.

With player prices appearing to take longer to change in this season’s FPL game so far, there have been fewer fluctuations than ever in the market – essentially, this is allowing us the chance to stick to our guns and follow through on our long-term planning. Granted, while following the bandwagons, such as Gylfi Sigurdsson, can pay off handsomely, reining in our knee-jerk reactions and maintaining courage in our initial convictions can prove the wisest move.

I'm loving the new price system - it works well for my new tactic this year of patience and sticking by my players I feel will do well

I think so, players don't seem to be dropping or raising as they did last season!

Thoughts on these moves. -8 point hit...

How about just Chester/Lovren/Young > Taylor/Wisdom/Siggy for -4? I'll get rid of Shelvey in coming weeks to avoid double Swansea.

Awful to take an -8 for that.

Overall, Hull have been *ok* defensively & Chester is only out one game.
(Even if he drops you're back to his original price)

After that, you didn't buy Lovern for his first 3 weeks... just look at their upcoming sched.

That said, ditching Young & Shelvey seems like a good idea but, Chadli is a rotation risk & looking for against QPR hardly makes him an *omgineedhimthisweekforahit* calibre.

          Note: Wisdom looks nice. 🙂

Hey read a *tip* on post week assessments re: transfers / knee jerk moves on *some other* site awhile ago & it went something like...

Assess your team like a triage doctor or ER doctor would.

Treat the fatally wounded, then critically injured & blah, blah, blah down the line.

If he ain't going to die then just set him aside to deal with later.
(And, IF too many start to pile up *then* its probably time to WC)

So this week, who *needs* to go?

Looking at the lot you presented Shelvey or Young look like prime candidates as Shelvey is playing a deeper role & Young can't seem to get going in his new role.

Contrast this with Lovern who has great upcoming fixtures & Chester who'll only miss one week & all of a sudden it doesn't seem so bad.

Ivanovic, Bertrand and the midfield is great. I'd probably go Sterling over Mata.

I'd also go for three top strikers if I was WC-ing... that'll be what you want for most of the season. And Courtois is unnecessary, not great value at that price.

Actually have to disagree with the majority here - a decent team on the whole. Not swayed by two Spurs cleanies yet - extremely lucky not to concede GW1, and they'll get found out big time against better sides. Interesting to see how they hold up against Liverpool this week. Dier will most probably lose his spot to Walker eventually too, though not sure when that'll be.

6m is too much for a keeper with no save points and average fixtures.

              Get Catterrmole out quick smart!

Downgrade Kolarov and Debuchy for a hit or downgrade Mata. Not sure I like any Mata replacements in that price range though.

And now that I think about it, you should probably give Fletcher one more week as he has QPR this weekend.

Just sell Kolarov and/or Mata/Debuchy for now.

              Caulker (c)

32 touches in the opposition's box v Spurs.

He is due a goal and Sunderland are weak aerially.

              Everybody is transferring him out.

Time to let the trolling begin Caulker!!! 😀

I also know that the only way I can win the monthly prize is by taking a captaincy risk as we all have similar teams.

Caulker is the ultimate differential. If he scores and keeps a CS I'm almost certain to win the month.

                50000000% this

I watched the game, and knowing he had a head off the line in GW1 watching him against Spurs he was by a mile the most attacking player in the team - should have scored at least twice but frustratingly didnt....

I'll be keeping and reaping the rewards as a differential.

If he spent more time defending then maybe QPR wouldn't concede so much.

Caulker isn't the problem. Rio is.

Also, he has issued a rallying cry to his teammates saying they need to improve.

Who has better upside, Debuchy or Clichy? Both are at 5.5 and I currently have Debuchy.

                  Debuchy is nailed

Pellegrini is annoying with the way he changes his full backs. BUT Pellegrini gives players that play well (e.g Jovetic) more gametime, so for the time being Clichy may be semi-nailed

I think Jovetic and Dzeko will start again.

Aguero 30 mins again. Saving him for the big games after the Int break.

Evening all. Need to swap out Caulker - I don't think any chance of goals is going to offset the lack of CSs and I need more from a 5.0m defender! Who do you think is best - thinking Rose, Taylor/ Williams, maybe Yoshida (but doubling up with Clyne). I might be happy with that double up given Southampton's fixtures.

Why are ppl using their wild cards and taking hits unnecessarily? I understand if there are injuries or pressing issues; but taking hits to take out the likes of Lovren/Chester who should come good, or to get Jovetic(one good game) in is silly.

Chester for instance will only miss one game and then he'll be back. A keeper for me.

Not counting on him offensively. For his price just want some clean sheets. Hull's def, especially at home is good.

MU defence very ropey. Maybe Debuchy? Or even a budget 5m/ 4.5m choice

                        Quick question guys

                        A Aguero + Naismith + Tadic

                        B Rooney + Adebayor + Rodwell

                        C Rooney + Naismith + Mata

Apologies if the question is silly but curious as to what are the longterm implications of the new rise/fall system. Just looking at the players that have risen is rather strange, minimal changes in comparison with the drops.

                          no crazy TV's of £110m

No teams packed with big hitters

                          More interesting

Interesting, good news for myself as my TV was poor in comparison to others last season and it can lead me in to making silly decisions.

Would be happy enough with him. Hoping the Cerci rumours don't pan out - good player but we need an bona fide striker and he does his best work from the wing.

Rooney followed by Ramsey or Siggy

Di Maria has passed his medical folks... if Balotelli is worth 10m I expect him to come in at a crazy price mind. Not paying above 10m for any midfielder of Man Utd...

                            Hang on hang on...

Why are you wc'ing now and why am I thinking about it too?

We have no money to use!!!!

Madness. Ill hit hit hit for now if I have to...its in my nature anyhow!

103m+ is WC goal I suppose.

                            Saw one before with a 3 5 2 WC...

What happens if and when there are 5 premium fwds to choose from? 13m 12m 12.5m 13m 11.5m?

I'm already regretting 3 5 2 personally as I'm baffled as to how to get in Aguero!

Baffled? Just ditch one of your premium midfielders. It's not that difficult.

Vaz Te to Aguero is 7.5 m mate.

                                There isn't a midfielder for 1.5m

You didn't provide your team. You'll have to loose 2 mf or 2 defs. To be honest, your defence & keeper are letting you down big time. I'd wc in the international break.
