Scout Scribbles – Kompany Overcomes Calf Complaint

Vincent Kompany recovers from a calf problem to play the full 90 minutes for Belgium. Edin Dzeko and Loic Remy are amongst the goals for Bosnia and France, Marcos Rojo is in line for his United debut after finally receiving a work permit, while reports suggest Siem de Jong could be set for a spell on the sidelines after picking up a groin injury in training for Newcastle.

KOMPANY RECOVERY AIDS BELGIUM

City skipper Vincent Kompany recovered from a calf problem to play the full 90 minutes for Belgium last night in their straightforward 2-0 victory over Australia.

The Scout Says: Kompany’s owners will have rested a little easier last night after reports earlier in the week suggested the centre-back could be a doubt for his side’s showdown with Arsenal in eight days’ time. With new boy Eliaquim Mangala still struggling to reach full fitness, the Blues chances of shutting out the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Aaron Ramsey will surely depend on a solid showing from their captain in the heart of defence. Would-be suitors of the 6.5-valued Belgian should be wary though, as the match against Arsenal is followed by the visit of current table-toppers Chelsea to the Etihad in Gameweek 5. Beyond that, however, City face Hull, Aston Villa and West Ham in their next four, and clean sheets look on the menu for Kompany and co.

DZEKO ON TARGET IN BOSNIA WIN

Elsewhere for City, Edin Dzeko notched the 37th goal of his international career as Bosnia ran out 3-0 winners against Liechtenstein.

The Scout Says: With Sergio Aguero now fully fit for Manuel Pellegrini’s side, Dzeko is set to go head-to-head with Stevan Jovetic for the starting spot alongside the talismanic Argentine in the Blues’ attack. It was a contest that the 8.5-priced Dzeko lost out on last time out, only taking to the field for 28 minutes as a second-half substitute, and the Bosnian has subsequently been sold on by over 42,000 managers so far this week. However, City’s dismal display in their 1-0 loss to Stoke last weekend suggests Pellegrini will be tempted to make alterations for his side’s trip to Arsenal in Gameweek 4, and Dzeko and his remaining owners will be hopeful that the forward can return to the starting line-up and build on the momentum from last night’s goal-scoring display.

REMY FIRES FRANCE TO VICTORY

Chelsea’s latest recruit Loic Remy emerged from the substitutes bench for France last night to strike his side’s only goal in a 1-0 friendly win over Spain, whose starting line-up included Remy’s new teammates Cesc Fabregas, Cesar Azpilicueta and Diego Costa.

The Scout Says: Unfortunately for Remy’s 4.5% ownership in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, the striker looks another name now added to the list of previously popular Fantasy options whose potential has been almost entirely eradicated after summer moves (think Rickie Lambert and Bacary Sagna). With Costa’s recent injury scare now long forgotten, the in-form Spaniard’s spot in Jose Mourinho’s starting XI looks almost untouchable, hence the chances of Remy getting anywhere near last season’s tally of 14 goals this time round appear minimal at best.

ROJO CLEARED FOR UNITED BOW

The controversy surrounding the work permit of Manchester United’s summer signing Marcus Rojo has finally been resolved, and the former Sporting Lisbon defender is now available to make his debut for the Old Trafford outfit when they face QPR in Gameweek 4.

The Scout Says: It’s not only at the attacking end of the pitch that Louis Van Gaal now has some personnel decisions to make. Rojo’s availability could see the 6.0-priced defender come straight into United’s starting line-up as a centre-back in two Sunday’s time, with youngster Tyler Blackett looking most likely to drop to the bench. On the other hand, Van Gaal might instead choose to utilise Rojo as a left wing back – anyone who followed this summer’s World Cup will have noticed the Argentinian’s effectiveness in driving up the flank, and his new manager may opt to tap into that potential. Either way, with Daley Blind’s potential seriously curtailed by his classification in FPL as a midfielder, and Luke Shaw still sidelined with a hamstring injury, Rojo may now emerge as United’s key defensive asset in the coming weeks as his side’s kind run of fixtures continues (QPR, lei, WHM, EVE, wba).

GROIN SCARE FOR DE JONG

Reports suggest that Newcastle’s summer signing Siem de Jong has suffered a groin tear in training and could face up to four months out of action. The Dutchman has only just made his comeback from a calf problem, but may now return to the injury list alongside teammate Jack Colback, who withdrew from England’s international squad with a calf knock at the start of the week.

The Scout Says: Expectations were high for De Jong following his acquisition from Ajax, but the midfielder is now beginning to adopt the unwelcome label of ‘injury prone’ (bear in mind he was injured five times for Ajax last season alone). Having only made one start so far this term after picking up a calf problem in pre-season, the 7.0-priced man’s campaign has really yet to get going, and if yesterday’s reports are correct, that could remain the case until Christmas time. Moussa Sissoko offers an option to replace de Jong in the ‘hole’, but with Colback also a doubt for the Magpies’ Gameweek 4 visit of Southampton, Sissoko may well continue in a midfield role, allowing Remy Cabella the chance to shift in behind the lone striker. This scenario could also see Pardew hand Rolando Aarons his first league start on the wing – the young midfielder has impressed in both of his substitute appearances this season, picking up a goal and assist against Crystal Palace last Saturday, and should the de Jong rumours be true, Aarons, at just 5.0, could prove a quality budget option for the next few months.

Will keep tinkering, although Di Maria was on fire vs Germany, hoping he can gets a full 90 min vs QPR and Leicester in the next two.
Might downgrade Baines to Moreno and upgrade Lamela instead....

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Who will be this season's surprise stars?

We've had three gameweeks of stats and games to look at. Who do you think will be the surprise stars of the season who will likely be in the top ten FPL pts scorers in their position.

We can already guess that the likes of Costa and Ramsey will be there?

But who will surprise us with a great season.

(this was inspired by Tiggsy's community article about Steven Gerrard - who I think will be among this season's top scoring midfielders)

Gerrard will only be a top scoring midfielder if Liverpool keep getting an insane amount of penalties like last season. Without them he is pretty much redundant these days.

My pick was Siem De Jong, I still think he will be when he regains full fitness. Great player.

I expect a big season from Mirallas too.

I think Phil Jones will be one of the top scoring defenders, just below the Ivanovic and Coleman bracket. He'll somehow avoid injuries and play 90 minutes every week, he has attacking potential and looks bonus friendly. Even in an awful start for his team, he's done well.

Really expect Henderson to be under the radar until(if) he picks up a goal in successive matches or a brace sometime.

Henderson is an athlete, one of the best overall in the PL and highly underrated, even by myself until last season and I paid him a bit more attention. With BR advising him to push up and attack more rather than being part of the pivot could easily get him a few assists or goals.

Hopefully it all happens when I play him, not when he's sat 3rd on my bench!

Tadic or Pelle, or even Mane for saints could really tear it up with the upcoming fixtures and I'm .1 short of Henderson > Tadic so that is midly frustrating. Though I have faith that either will deliver in the long run.

Gerrard will be there purely because of Penalties. I predict 6-8 assists from set pieces all season and 1-2 open play goals. It's because of the Pens that he will get anywhere near the top. Of course scoring pen's isn't as easy as he makes it looks and so he deserves the points. I had him for the entirety of last season and if Sterling didn't look so exciting he would be in my team for sure.

Surprise star this season? Janmaat, Lamela, Siggy.

Kompany didn't actually recover from, but played through the injury. There was some talk here in Belgium about Kompany only showing up for competitive internationals and not showing up for friendlies. He took a chance with his injury and played to prove a point. Don't think City will be overly happy with his decision. Don't think he aggravated his injury though. He looked quite alright last night.

Defence for me would be: Rafael, Jones, Rojo, Shaw

Ofc Shaw is injured so it'd be Blind at LB instead for now.

I agree with the formation but I'm torn on whether we should be using Blind or Januzaj in midfield.

I'd use this against the bigger teams, and use my one against bottom 10 opposition.

If anyone can make the following formation work, LVG can (4-3-1-2):

          .............Herrera............
          Rooney.............ADM

          ..............Mata...............

          .......Falcao, RVP............

To be honest it's true that our squad is so unbalanced it's a joke. Rooney, Mata, Falcao, RVP will never work in the same team it seems. Imagine if we still had Kagawa too.

Moreno for me as he looks more of a threat going forward and confident on the ball. Manquillo looks a bit less comfortable at the moment and subject to some clumsy challenges, so expect yellow cards.

He needs time to adapt to English football, specifically the English defenders who won't give him much time to dazzle around like in Spain.

Hopefully he'll settle soon enough, unlike Ozil, unlike Pires who took a season.

Yes but whilst at times those 3 played sublime football, decent managers just kept their defences narrow knowing no one was trying to hit the byline & everything was played down the middle.

OK since playing Blind would add to the defensive solidity in our team. How does this look? 3-5-2.

    .............Jones, Evans, Rojo...........
    Januzaj................................ADM
    ...............Herrera, Blind.................

    ...............Mata/Rooney.................

    ................Falcao, RVP................

So frustrating, as I can't see any realistic way of playing Rooney, Falcao, RVP & Mata in the same team. It gets even worse as I want Januzaj to get lots of game time this season but we're not going to bench someone as good as ADM for him.

Them wing back areas will get exploited, you have to be able to defend also as a wing back. Valencia and rojo/blind in wing back areas until shaw and Rafael are fit. Mata I think will be benched or dropped deep.

As a QPR fan seen the system which we have now abandoned and it creats a number of problems. It ain't winger friendly for starters. Specialist wbs of PL level are a rare also.

I didn't say I cared. He is there to keep players happy a crucial aspect of any managers job and as far as I am concerned when a managers unsuccesful system tinkering reflects on players output then you are being dropped for the wrong reason in the first place.

He is there to win football matches. At his previous clubs lots of players have fallen out with him because he picks the best player's for the team not the one's who earn big money or who cost a lot of money!

I believe some Liverpool attack will be essential for the next few fixtures if you don´t have none and you have Costa(which I assume you do) go for it.

Who is on your tick list for starting 11 week in week out?

    For me needs to be at least representation from Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City with following selections;
3 x Attacking midfielders (with mid price performer and cheap 5th with potential)
1 x Defence (with 4 x 4M to 5M fillers who will rotate as per form and fixture)
2 x Forwards (and either a cheap performer or comprimise the midfield for another mid-price-expensive forward)

Again Coleman would be perfect for this (I'd actually love it if we were to offer Everton Rafael + a bit of cash for Coleman). Rafael is good but he is so defensively inconsistent (in his very best season for us he got destroyed by a Reading player & Fergie hauled him off at half time).

I'd like to play 4-3-3. But would like to stick with 3-5-2 if LVG really does think it can work. He knows best.

If Strootman's signed in Jan could pave the way to a 4-3-3; how the Netherlands were originally lining up under LVG. Once Strootman got injured it had to change to 3-5-2.

But don't want to jump the gun and slate LVG's system too early as if he really does think it can work I trust his judgement over most and would like to think I supported it along the way.

Would love to see Di Maria outwide where we've lacked width for a while. LVG did mention something about being able to change the system with Di Maria signed now. Would like to think we've signed him as a RW rather than another attacking mid... In a 4-3-3 he would be devastating. Major reason why I'd love to see that formation played.
