Monitor – Stewart Downing

It’d be fair to say that when the pre-season player lists were revealed last July, Stewart Downing was far from our thoughts as a viable Fantasy option. A goal and two assists over 2,507 minutes in 2013/14 highlights his lack of impact in a West Ham outfit that scored just 40 times over the entire campaign, and despite reports suggesting Sam Allardyce’s side were set to go on the attack this time around, we were anything but convinced.

After five Gameweeks, though, the Hammers are starting to deliver. A 3-1 win over Liverpool means they have now scored nine times so far – averaging of 1.8 goals per match compared to last year’s 1.05 – and, from a Fantasy perspective at least, Downing has been the player to benefit most. A total of 27 points is just six off the top of the midfield standings in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and sees the 5.5-priced Downing sandwiched in between Aaron Ramsey and Eden Hazard, on 28 and 25 points respectively.

With a goal, two assists and six bonus points accrued, Downing’s prospects could be boosted further by a switch in formation which afforded him the role in “the hole” behind Enner Valencia last weekend.

In our next members article of the week, we turn to the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) tables in order to assess the 2%-owned Downing’s displays in comparison to the season gone by.

For those who aren’t familiar with them, KPI tables are designed to use a series of key stats to allow our members to track form or changes in player performance. By tracking the frequency of certain key statistics and comparing them over two separate periods of time, we can ascertain whether a player’s form has improved or declined. As mentioned in last summer’s introductory article, we’ve rolled out a preview movie which shows just how to get the best out of the KPI tables.

Better than spurs. Unlucky not to have scored the goal of the round, of the underside of the bar from a cracking shot after a great run.

Spurs haven't had a single shot on target yet

Funnily enough, I was plugging Downing in to the comparison tool earlier today. He compares favourably vs the likes of Tadic etc. I don't believe he's really a better option, though.

Looks like it. I was quite surprised as I thought his day had gone post-Villa. His Liverpool stint turned him in to a bit of a fantasy no-go area.

Hi gents. Hope your teams are shaping up well.

Need your opinions. I currently have on 1 FT and am not sure what to do. Here are the options:

    A) Naismith + Cahill > Pelle + Taylor
    B) Naismith>Ulloa
    C) Bruce/Bartley/Caulker > Taylor

Clearly my defense needs to be sorted. But really want pelle in cause of my mini league competitors. Considering the move cahill since he hasn't had great returns and shipping him out is the only way to get pelle in for naismith. Would that first option be crazy though?

    Any help would be appreciated

Currently own tadic with the cash to switch to Rambo. No other Sot / Gooner coverage. Rest of mini league have either Welbeck or Rambo and North London Derby is always a goalfest. On the other hand sot should score a few at home to QPR. All thoughts welcome. Cheers

would u get falcao/ sturridge + boyd instead of ulloa + adm ?

no other great striker options to be honest as kun is injury prone and rotation risk

Let me put it this way. Lack of captain options when having front 3 like that. Would you captain Ulloa rather than Aguero/Sturridge?

Should I do this -4 transfer deal:

Sheesh...no idea when anybody would scoff at Downing this year...Kicks, corners, playing in the hole with Valencia in front of him..1 goal, 2 assists and 6BPS already....and all for 5.5...What's not to like ?

Have you actually watched them this year...He's/they are playing really well...At 5.5 you can pick and choose the easier fixtures to play him in...Wham are going to do well in those.

      I know, but its Downing.

It took me until Toure scored a hat trick to get on him last season and i ignored Rambo for the entire season.

No he's not...not at 5.5...That's the whole point of him. Virtually no impact on your squad at all.

The stats can be a bit misleading, though. But I'm not sure the 27 points in 5 games is a misleading stat - looks like quite a telling one.

Exactly what I was thinking but once on form he's one of very few strikers that can score 2 or 3 a game.

      Don't get RvP.

Roo & Falcao better options for United.

Walk away. The striker situation at ManU is equivalent to a "running back by committee" construct in American football. The scoring will be spread across multiple strikers (not to mention a stable of active midfielders). Think of it this way - how many goals will RVP score if he sees his fair share (~1/3) of ManU scoring opportunities? Compare this number to the number of goals that will be scored by Pelle, Ade, Ulloa, etc. who are the primary targets for their teams AND a fraction of the cost of RVP.

New post so I'll have a go again, in case someone wants do discuss this idea:

If I ran this site, I would make everyone pay to use it. It would be cheaper for those who don't want to access the member features, but I still think everyone who uses it regularly should pay something, since it's such a great site!

By making everybody pay, I would probably get rid off thousands of people that only come on here a few minutes a week to get free advice, articles, scout picks etc. without contributing in any way. I'm not saying I contribute a lot, but at least I pay membership and try to help people on here.

Good or crazy idea? I think this could lead to a better site with higher standards.

True, wouldn't bother me though. Still a lot of people and I would know they are somewhat interested and not only taking advantage of the site being free.
