Scout Scribbles – Oscar Key to Samba Success

Oscar grabs a pair of assists in Brazil’s win over Argentina. Dusan Tadic also earns an assist for Serbia. Wilfried Bony is in the goals as Ivory Coast triumph, while Roy Hodgson confirms he has no plans to rest Raheem Sterling for tonight’s clash with Estonia.

Oscar Instrumental in Brazil Win

The Chelsea midfielder provided a pair of assists as Brazil saw off Argentina 2-0 in a friendly match played in China yesterday. Oscar was one of a number of Premier League players afforded 90 minutes in this one – Willian, Filipe Luis, Martin Demichelis, Angel Di Maria and Marcos Rojo featured from start to finish, whilst Sergio Aguero and Erik Lamela were handed an hour apiece.

The Scout Says: Slowly but surely, Oscar is starting to suggest he could yet have a part to play in our Fantasy seasons. A goal and assist in his last three league appearances is indicative of his improving displays and yesterday’s showing merely underlines his playmaking capabilities – at less than 3% ownership in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, he’d be an invaluable differential if he can continue that form for the Blues. Whilst Aguero owners will be happy with his limited minutes, both South American sides still have plenty of travelling to do before domestic action resumes. Argentina face Hong Kong away on Tuesday, whilst Brazil play Japan in Singapore on the same day before facing a lengthy trip home. Although United don’t return to action until Monday evening, City, on the other hand, are set to play on Saturday lunchtime, and Manuel Pellegrini will be hoping his main men are suitably rested before squaring up to Tottenham.

HODGSON RELYING ON STERLING

Roy Hodgson has declared that he will not rest Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling when England face Estonia in their Euro Qualifier tonight, despite Brendan Rodger’s previous protests about the winger’s current workload. Sterling only played for 45 minutes for England against San Marino on Thursday night, and Hodgson believes he is perfectly capable of putting in another shift this evening:

“When he shows signs of not being quite as sharp, that might be the moment we think we have to manage this and give him a break. I don’t think the situation will need managing until he shows signs of suffering from it. But that is not the case at the moment – and I don’t think Liverpool need to worry.”

The Scout Says: Over 53% of Fantasy managers will be hoping that Sterling comes through tonight’s fixture unscathed, as Liverpool prepare for a kind run of fixtures. Whilst Hodgson is determined to utilise the teenager, Rodgers has already shown that he’s prepared to rest Sterling to the bench to protect his match sharpness, as evidenced by a sub role in the Gameweek 4 clash with Villa, which took place after the first international break of the season. However, with Lazar Markovic sustaining a reported muscle tear in Serbia’s Euro qualifier yesterday, Rodgers may be convinced to hold off resting Sterling for a while yet. Markovic has started two of Liverpool’s last four league fixtures, though has failed to stamp his mark thus far since his summer switch from Benfica. With Daniel Sturridge now set to return to the fold, the Serb is likely to earn a sub role at best when he is back from injury.

TADIC HELPS SERBIA TO DRAW

Dusan Tadic grabbed a late assist as Serbia fought back to earn a 1-1 draw with Armenia in their Euro qualifier.

The Scout Says: Tadic is still flying under the radar in FPL with an ownership of just below 3%, though he has proved a central figure to Ronald Koeman’s plans since joining Southampton in the summer and has picked up returns in each of his last two home appearances. The Saints have two consecutive St Mary’s fixtures ahead of them against Sunderland and Stoke, with three more enticing encounters to follow (hul, LEI, avl), and Tadic, at 7.5, is sure to continue to be instrumental in their midfield. Koeman would also have been encouraged by Florin Gardos’ return from injury for Romania last night – the 4.9-priced centre-back has only played 45 minutes for the Saints this term due to a calf injury, but is now set to increase his manager’s options in defence for their aforementioned run of fixtures.

BONY NETS IN ELEPHANTS’ WIN

Wilfried Bony was on the scoresheet as Ivory Coast defeated the Democratic Republic of Congo 2-1 in their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier yesterday. City’s Yaya Toure earned an assist after his free-kick was deflected into the path of Max Gradel, who slotted home the winner.

The Scout Says: Bony is finally starting to find some form after a laboured start to the campaign. Last night’s strike followed his Gameweek 7 goal against Newcastle, and with two decent fixtures up next for the Swansea (sto, LEI), he could be set to give Garry Monk’s side the ideal fillip after their recent lack of wins. The schedule takes a turn for the worse after Gameweek 9 (eve, ARS, mci), though it is worth remembering that Bony’s displays in such meetings last season saw him earn the status of ‘fixture-proof’ – eight of his 17 goals in the 2013/14 campaign came against the top six sides.

KRUL CONCERN FOR NEWCASTLE

Tim Krul has been withdrawn from Holland’s squad for their European Championship Qualifiers after suffering an elbow injury in training.

The Scout Says: A potential absence for Krul will only add to Alan Pardew’s growing list of woes, with Paul Dummett and Daryl Janmaat having already pulled out of their international squads earlier this week. Krul’s injury could, however, bring Rob Elliot into consideration as the cheapest playing keeper around for a short while, but with 14 goals against in the opening seven Gameweeks, their backline is still unlikely to earn many new owners for now.

BAGGIES SWEATING ON BRUNT

Chris Brunt is in a race to be fit for West Brom’s clash with Man United next weekend. The midfielder missed last night’s Euro qualifier for Northern Ireland with a groin problem and is also a major doubt for their meeting with Greece on Tuesday.

The Scout Says: Ever an ‘unattractive’ pick, Brunt has nonetheless proved valuable for his 5.4 price tag with assists in two of his last three league outings. His total of 51 crosses this season is also particularly impressive, with his eye for a ball into the box likely to be damaging against United’s porous defence next Monday if he can win his fitness race. Brunt’s potential absence is also worrying for Saido Berahino’s owners, as the 5.5-priced forward could be shifted to the right flank with Brown Ideye expected to be fit for the United clash. Three goals in his last two from the central forward berth has seen the England Under-21 star receive plenty of interest already this Gameweek, but his potential could be seriously dented if he is withdrawn to midfield to plug the gap left by Brunt.

    Lost in previous post.

My current team would have cost just 97 M in GW1. Add in the 2.1 M in bank and I have effectively lost 0.9 M 😐 (Current TV: 103.9)

    Where/How did I lose value?

Yeah, I did the same sums on my team a couple of weeks ago. I was down by a similar amount.

Think it's partly down to it being more difficult to make up for price drops with double price rises this season so your team gradually erodes.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Take the Fifth

Is it me or is this year particularly bad for cheap fifth midfielders. In previous years the likes of Sterling and Januzaj have emerged as viable, albeit temporary, sources of points to either come off the bench or play if one of your other front players has a tough fixture. This year there appears to be none with most managers settling for 2pts from the likes of Marney and Boyd.

Given post international injuries our fifth Mids may be needed.

Will any good options emerge? If so who? Or are we left with just 2pt players in the 4.5m mid bracket?

Who is prepared to spend more?

Nope. Don't need them. Play 4 mids each week, Saves a lot of benching issues at a time when we only need 11 outfield players anyway.

So far there is nothing below 5 really. In fact theres not much below 5.5 really. I dont think this rules out the use of a 5th cheap mid as a facilitator to getting in more expensive players elsewhere, but it would probably relegate the 5th mid to being last on the bench for me in many circumstances.

Personally i think there may be some mileage in alternative formations to the 'std' 3-4-3.

I've had Albrighton stinking up my team for ages.

There really are no good ~4.5 options. But I think this might have been part of FPL's plans because I also think they under-priced many of the premium midfielders.

Last year we had Barkley and Januzaj at 4.5m, as well as Sterling very cheap (I think he started the season at 5m as well). We also had other good options like Ramsey at 5.5m, Huddlestone at 5m Ravel Morrison at 4.5m and Mutch at 4.5m. I can't see anyone this year being as good as any of those options tbh. Maybe Robbie Brady if he starts getting game time at 4.7m?

The only player below 5 million who has great potential is Vardy for me.. this is why i've gone with a 3-5-2.. i love playing with a good 8th attacker as it saves me transfers when one of my main 7 gets injured(can just play Vardy) allowing me to stick to long term plans

Hulk up the playing 11 and fill the reserves with cheapest players who are guaranteed playing time.
Bench will be called into action once in a blue moon so don't see the point in wasting funds over it.

Besides having 2 points on bench is much better than moaning about a 12 pointer who is 1st sub 🙂

Yep, it's not a great year so far for cheap midfielders. I'm happy enough at the moment with Marney for £4.5m as he hasn't been needed once and allows me to get a very strong front seven out.

However, when Christmas starts approaching it may be more of a concern as squad players will inevitably come into the points reckoning. Hopefully someone in that £4.0 - £4.5/6m price range will emerge who offers something a bit extra. Jordan Mutch being a good example from last year (not this year).

I think 4.5 mids should really be only scoring 2 points a game. Last season was an exception, a combination of lots of emerging talent, progressive managers (Martinez, Rodgers, etc.) and more than a few under-priced players.

I mean, if 4.5 were supposed to actually score points, wouldn't the actual 2 pointer players be values at 4.0 or even 3.5 million? and then non-starters would be even less.

I think the FPL team probably view the pricing this year as a success in that regard.

In previous seasons you got absolutely eff all for strikers below 6m, you were left with the likes of Chamakh.

This season there has been Naismith, Ulloa, Vardy, Berahino, Sakho, Fletcher, Nugent, with possibly more to emerge as options.
Far more decent cheap strikers, but less decent cheap mids - are they pushing us towards a 3-5-2?

Or, more likely, they price players in line with expected points, and because many cheap midfielders did well last season, cheap mids got priced up this year.

Maloney for Wigan was a great 5th mid option a few years ago. Very attacking and on set pieces. I was left hoping that he would come off my bench so often that I ended up playing him every week towards the end of the season.

Repost because of the new post.

As an Aguero non owner, I have been pretty comfortable so far. City aren't destroying teams. They are again struggling in cl so there will be rotation even if they are thin at the moment with strikers. Aguero yet to deliver a big haul. I don't think he has been among the top 5 players in any gw and he is the 2nd most expensive player in the game. After 6 gws fully fit and yet to deliver means an injury or knock is due. Essential? Absolutely not.

I believe the essential tag is earned over 3-4 weeks of delivering big points to say the least. Aguero is yet to earn it and 1 odd big haul (against spurs as some are suggesting) doesn't change that.

I run a team for my wife - for a bit of fun. The only rule I impose on her selections is that she can't have any of my players. I am pretty happy with her team!

    Courtois/Gilks
    Betrand/Baines/Peiters/Kaboul/Koscielny
    Hazard/Tadic/Silva/Downing/Dyer
    Cisse/Bony/Pelle

My 1st team is very template - basically Siggy/fab/adm/sterling/costa/aguero/welbeck front 7 with ivanovic/clyne my defensive big hitters.

There are so many options this year it seems for every position. It's a fun exercise to select an alternative XI.

The top Defenders often score as many points as the top end mid/strikers but cost half the price. Under utilised in my opinion.

    Begovic
    Taylor Baines Clyne

With that team you don't need a WC.

      Fabregas/Sterling v Tadic (or Chadli)
      Dzeko v Aguero

      -4point hit.

    Foster (Myhill)

    Baines, Ivanovic, Bertrand (Moore, Wisdom)

Di Maria, Fabregas, Sigurdsson, Lallana (Cork)

    Costa, Welbeck, Pelle

I think this is pretty solid until January.

On WC too. V similar team to mine except I have Chambers instead of Bert and Sterling instead of Lallana... So I'm in the opinon that it's pretty solid 😉

Lallana may have too much rotation issues for me with champions league and all. Our CM positions are cramped atm. I'd rather have Chadli.
Wisdom also concerns me as Gamboa looked good on his debut.

Otherwise very nice and template 🙂

Looking forward to the next run of games with some great looking fixture coming up for some team and .in paticular some of our top picks FPL picks at the moment
Three great set piece takers in Baines, Gerrard and Eriksen have fantastic fixtures between them and will in effect, be going head to head with some of the best "open play" picks in Chadli, Sterling and Lukaku(!)......

Who are the players playing OOP at the moment?

Schlupp is one, though I'm pretty sure I've heard of another defender playing Oop lately.

Then there's the likes of Siggy, Tadic, Downing. Anyone else?

    1. Dr Dream
      • 11 Years
      9 years, 7 months ago

Doesn't matter where they are listed to play, but how they play (see my OOP) articles...Sanchez, Bolasie, Sterling, Chadli, Siggy plus one or two ther's are playing beyond the striker....Baines regularly plays higher than his mids....
Robertson at Hull and Schlupp(?) are playing OOP in the real sense of defenders playing as mids...

Where are these Oops articles Wakey? I can see your great work on falling stars but that doesn't include oop prospects.
I absolutely agree that it's how the player's playing which is important. I just see anyone on this list as being worthy of keeping an eye on. As it happens most of the players you've mentioned have been in a fair few teams around here.

Roberton at Hull, that was the other defender!

        1. Dr Dream

Each week I list all the mids who's avg position is beyond the striker for their respective teams...and how they did for pts that week...I have a summary of the first seven weeks nearly finished so just wait for that. It makes for interesting reading with the same names from the same teams appearing regularly....and they are amongst the top picks.

            Oooh, that'll be grand!!
I do remember seeing something about that a while ago actually..

As long as Mirallas or a Stoke midfielder doesn't get in there. So many continue to fall into both traps.
There's also the danger that the player playing Oops has gametime problems, if I look down my data section for the week and I don't see mostly 90s I'm not happy!

sterlo has been "out of form" and only 1pt behind. imagine when he's in form esp. with those fixtures. old fabregas is on track for 38 assists and is still behind chadli who missed gw1 altogether..
