The Watchlist Updated – Gameweek 12

Our Watchlist rankings, which offer player recommendations over the next four-to-six Gameweeks, have been updated over the last 24 hours.

Defence

Chelsea’s upturn in fixtures earns Thibaut Courtois a climb to the top of the keeper standings. At 6.0, the Belgian is a relatively cheap option when compared to most of Jose Mourinho’s defensive options and a kind set of fixtures (WBA, sun, TOT, new, HUL, sto) in the next six should arrest a run of four matches without a clean sheet. At 7.2, Branislav Ivanovic remains our Blues defender of choice – we expect the Serbian’s raids down the right to come to fruition over that schedule.

West Ham pair Adrian and Aaron Cresswell have some kind upcoming fixtures (eve, NEW, wba, SWA, sun) to prosper. At 5.4, the latter may be the dearest Hammers defensive option around but he’s justified that in recent outings, earning 22 points in the last four Gameweeks.

Having kept out the Hammers last time out, Villa duo Brad Guzan and Ron Vlaar are on the up ahead of showdowns with Burnley, Palace, Leicester and West Brom in the next five. Vlaar is, however, nursing a knock picked up on international duty and any possible period of absence will dent our confidence here.

Southampton slip in our estimations as Ronald Koeman’s men brace themselves for matches against City, United, Arsenal and Everton in the next six, suggesting Fraser Forster and Ryan Bertrand will find it hard to replicate the resilience which has seen them concede just five times in 11 matches.

Elsewhere at the back, Leighton Baines stays at the defenders summit in spite of his current hamstring complaint. Given that Everton have refused to rule him out of this weekend’s clash with West Ham, there’s every chance of a speedy return to action for a player who has now earned attacking returns in seven of the last nine.

Burnley’s Kieran Trippier remains in consideration after finally earning attacking points last time around. The right-back served up a 12-point haul against Hull and, now down to 4.8, has Stoke, Villa, Newcastle and QPR in the next four. If you’re scraping around the budget bracket for a first-choice defender, the 3.9-priced Yun Suk-Young has started the last four for QPR and hosts Leicester, Burnley and West Brom in the next six, whilst Paul Dummett (4.1) has been key to the resilience which has seen Newcastle concede just once in the last four.

Midfield

Alexis Sanchez’ move up front for Arsenal ensures the in-form Chilean holds steady at the summit – the Gunners face three dodgy defence (MUN, wba, sto) in the next four.

Eden Hazard is our premium Chelsea midfielder – the decision is made easier by the fact that Cesc Fabregas is battling a hamstring injury and is also just one booking from suspension. The 10.0-priced Hazard has served up double figures in each of his last two at the Bridge ahead of the Blues’ above-mentioned run, whilst Oscar, at 8.4 and with 4% ownership, looks a decent cheaper differential, with three goals in the last six.

Stewart Downing remains our mid-price midfielder of choice, whilst Gylfi Sigurdsson climbs as Swansea’s fixtures take a turn for the better in Gameweek 13 and Nacer Chadli continues to thrive for out-of-sorts Tottenham. The Belgian’s sixth goal of the season against Stoke took him into second spot in the FPL midfield standings and with Hull, Everton, Palace and Burnley in the upcoming six, it’s perhaps a little surprising only 16% have snapped him up.

Ross Barkley has started three of the last four for Everton since returning from injury and has the fixtures to play his way into consideration. The Toffees entertain West Ham, Hull and QPR and also travel to Spurs in the next five and at 6.7, Barkley’s 4% ownership suggests he could be a decent mid-price differential if he can avoid Roberto Martinez’ rotation policy.

Elsewhere on Merseyside, Raheem Sterling faces Palace, Stoke, Leicester and Sunderland in the next four, though with reports suggesting Daniel Sturridge has suffered another injury setback in training, it remains to be seen whether the youngster can rediscover his early-season form.

Southampton’s Dusan Tadic is the main faller. The playmaker’s underlying stats remain strong but, having blanked in seven of the opening 11 Gameweeks, his consistency is clearly an issue and with the schedule stiffening, he may struggle to stay in the reckoning.

Forwards

Up front, Sergio Aguero holds firm after firing seven goals in the last four for City, with the Argentine’s armband credentials affording him the edge over any frontline option right now.

Finally free from injury and rested for Spain’s recent internationals, Diego Costa looks poised to take advantage of Chelsea’s upcoming schedule. Having scored in seven of his nine league appearances, the summer signing is on a par with Aguero for consistency but sits just one yellow card away from a single-match ban after earning a fourth booking of the season at Anfield last time around.

Below them, Charlie Austin and Diafra Sakho look the pick of the budget strikers right now. The former’s four goals in the last three – including back-to-back strikes against Chelsea and City underline his capabilities, whilst Sakho has netted in all but one of his league starts for the Hammers and, like Austin, looks an absolute steal in the sub 6.0 category.

Olivier Giroud’s imminent return for Arsenal knocks Danny Welbeck down in our estimations, whilst Graziano Pelle – another forward who is one booking shy of a ban – also takes a tumble in light of Southampton’s post-Gameweek 12 schedule.

Further down, Tottenham’s Harry Kane offers an option in the sub-5.0 bracket – handed his first start in the previous Gameweek, his current form suggests the youngster could be a real bargain if he remains ahead of Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado in the pecking order. We’d tentatively reserved a place for Daniel Sturridge ahead of Liverpool’s fine fixtures but, as mentioned above, the striker could be sidelined yet again after apparently suffering a thigh injury in training.

Going against the crowd here but I'll say no. Azpi is good for BAPs and they're far more reliable than the potential extra goal threat. #dullard

The fact that Azpi has got bonus points every time Chelsea have kept a clean sheet this season is pretty alarming. He's definitely the boring pick from the Chelsea backline but he's still the most likely to get bonus points providing his defensive teammates don't get attacking returns in that week.

Revised Baseline BPS/min for Chelsea defenders:

                Azpilicueta = 0.190
                Terry = 0.163
                Ivanovic = 0.151
                Cahill = 0.148

                Fairly conclusive imo...

Also if you remove the 'lost' BPS for yellow/red cards, Azpi would lose 9BPS from his raw BPS score, in comparison to Terry losing 0, Cahill losing 6 and Ivan losing 9, so if we removed card points too then Azpi would have an even bigger lead. It really highlights how his all round game is suited almost perfectly to gaining BPS.

OK. He is not racking up the BPS - all the others are ahead of him. Ivanovic has cheated, admittedly, by scoring some goals and assists.

When he has acquired bonus, on only three occasions, he was a beneficiary of the other contenders getting yellow cards,

Terry's all-round form has dramatically improved, while Cahill, as usual has got steadily better.

I expect Azpilicueta to fall further behind in the BPS table, as a result. It is of course possible for him to acquire bonus nevertheless, but I would not advise anybody banking on it, as people are doing here. 🙂

Those 3 games were the only 3 games Chelsea kept a clean sheet Doos, you can't really expect him to get baps when they concede can you? 🙂

Although Cahill got booked during their clean sheets against Villa and Arsenal, Azpi would've still got the baps ahead of him even if we removed Cahill's negative BPS points for his yellow card.

You are that precise, are you? OK - but he is not for me.

And I can't advise anybody else to buy him. 🙂

Ivanovic regularly racks up lots of BPS, when Chelski do concede. Not so much lately, true. But Azpilicueta is not to be trusted on this score, imo.

Ivanovic racks up BPS when he gets attacking returns. He rarely does the same when he blanks - that's the measure Innsie is assessing.

No Chelsea player got booked in the Leicester game where he got 2 bonus.

Cahill and Fabregas got booked in the Villa game but neither of them were even remotely close to Azpilicueta's BPS score.

Cahill, Ivanovic, Oscar and Schurrle got booked in the Arsenal game. Only Ivanovic was close to Azpilicueta's BPS and he got more bonus anyway.

Yellow cards have played absolutely no part in his bonus to date.

His overall BPS isn't as impressive as it should have been because he missed two and a half games due to a red card.

I think not ....but I must admit Terry's goal threat has improved in recent weeks - the stats back that up too as well as watching games.

I will say though that goal scoring ability is not the most reliable way to choose a centre back. Goals are rare for this group of players. A far better guide is assists for full backs and bonus point potential for all defenders. This season full backs are faring better in terms of bonus and for me Azpi's all round game is worth more than Terry's occasional goal possibility.

I haven’t faired too bad with injuries, but I do have a bit of a crisis:

I can’t be sure that Mane will start.
Moore seems to have been dropped from the first XI.
Coloccini is out for a month.
    I have no free transfers.
    Baines is a doubt.

    Thoughts?

    Krul
    Baines | Bertrand | Chambers
    Sanchez | Hazard | Mane | Sigurdsson
    Aguero | Costa | Austin

    Moore | Marney | Coloccini

I had planned to make a swoop for a Swansea defender next week, but away @ City doesn’t really feel like the fixture to bring one in early for!

    Valargentina:

    I did it because....

    - ADM possibly Injured,
    - Man United out f form
    - Man U tougher fixture this week
    - Hazard on pens and looked dangerous despite no end product
    - Chelsea better fixture this week and next few
    - chelsea looking the much better team this season
    - I couldn't stop myself after sitting on it for so long!!

I don't think he's done much wrong, but there are a few factors counting against him:

      1. Hamstring injury (which we don't really yet know the full extent of)
      2. One yellow card away from a one match ban
      3. More explosive options e.g. Sanchez, Hazard
      4. A drop in KPI attacking stats (Hazard & Oscar look more likely to accrue more points based on their underlying KPI attacking stats. There was an excellent member article on this in the past week or so)
      5. Fabregas' own admission that he had a specific defensive role to play and was unlikely to be seen scoring many goals (made after the game against Crystal Palace in which he scored

He's been a superb, consistent performer for me since GW1 but this could be the right time to switch him out to a more explosive player as the games start to come thick and fast.

Damn, I hate the international breaks 🙁

Come back to 4 doubts, I am worried!

    Baines
    Bardsley
    Fabregas
    Welbeck

Baines definitely has a real injury (hamstring, grade 1 - least serious grade). Everton have already commented on his injury and Martinez is optimistic that he could still make West Ham on Saturday. He does recover quickly from injuries.

Fabregas also has a hamstring injury after being assessed by the Spanish national team. He then returned to Chelsea. There have been conflicting reports in the papers; some say a three week lay off, some say he could be fit for WBA. Well need to wait for Chelsea press conference.

I'm not sure about Bardsley. Wellbeck appeared to pick up a knock last night against Scotland. However, Hodgson has said Welbeck should be fit for Saturday, which was nice of him.

      1. BeachBadger

          just checked

"That diagnosis talked about an inflammatory process in a hamstring muscle. Although the scan shows no tear in that zone, the player continues to present discomfort and the medical services consider that his participation in the coming games (for Spain) would not be recommendable for his complete recovery."

Yep, it's one of those injuries that make FFL life difficult! Difficult to assess the extent of any absence (if any). Mourinho did say he played Fabregas with the injury against Liverpool. Hopefully we should know a bit more in the Chelsea press conference.

      1) You should definitely get Costa or Aguero in for Pelle next week (or this week with a hit if you think it's necessary) I would also downgrade Fabregas or Hazard to Chadli or Sigurdson to get the funds to change Pelle.

      2) Defense wise I suggest you change one of Baines or Coleman to Ivanovic to spread the risk. (not urgent)

      3) Then moving Tadic is your call, Chadli, Sigurdson are option here too or even Oscar depending on the money you have left and Sterling if he can revert his form.

      At a guess
      ADM 70% to start
      Baines will miss out
      Saylor 50/50

      pure conjecture mind you.

Wait for the press conferences. You will only get biased opinions here based on whether the person posting has them or not. I don't own any of them so they're all definitely injured. 100%.

          I don't own him 😉

That said I do own Krul, so Saylor and Colocini being out long isn't great.. but as an Austin owner (with Begovic playing instead of Krul) I wouldn't mind if Newcastle's defense was a shambles for just this one week 😉

Majority on here don't rate him. I think he's as good as Siggy FPL wise.

I'll admit that his touches in the box stat is great, but his conversion rate is still about Ulloa-ish, and Spurs suck. Sticking to Siggy and Downing myself.

Now that Sturridge is out, I may have to consider Sterling>Chadli to finance Pelle>Costa. Hmmm

Who should I bench? Obvious one would probably be Wanyama but i fancy him to get some points against a weak Villa side.

    A) Siggy (mci)

    B) Wanyama (avl)

    C) Chadders (hul)

With Courtois you'll need another playing keeper, as Cech at 5.6m is too expensive as back-up. So it's either Courtois/Cech (11.6m) or Courtois/4.5m keeper (10.5)
Then of course, the issue is that'll you'll never likely play your 4.5m keeper, so cash is wasted.

        B wins.

Can isn't nailed... Henderson, Allen, Coutinho, Lallana, etc... even Gerrard plays in one of the 2 advanced role sometimes this season
