Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 12 – Sunday

Yannick Bolasie bullies a beleaguered Liverpool into submission at Selhurst Park while on Humberside, Christian Eriksen inspires a Spurs comeback against 10-man Hull as Harry Kane gets on the scoresheet. Here’s the notes from Sunday’s pair of Premier League fixtures…

Eagles Attack Shows Potency

Crystal Palace seem incapable of keeping clean sheets under Neil Warnock, but they are compensating for this at the opposite end of the pitch: the Eagles have fired 17 goals this season, only two less than Man United, for example. Yannick Bolasie delivered the standout performance in the 3-1 victory over Liverpool, earning a pair of assists to take him to four for the season. Indeed, while Wilfried Zaha and Jason Puncheon continue to battle it out for pitch time on the right wing, Bolasie has now surpassed his returns from last season in just 12 Gameweeks. Priced at 5.4 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Bolasie, along with his skipper, Mile Jedinak, is offer viable mid-price midfield options. Jedinak notched his fourth goal of the season with a sweetly struck free-kick and, with spot-kick duties in his armoury and an FPL price of 5.1, also looks a handy proposition. At 5.1 up front, Dwight Gayle’s situation could also be worth monitoring – he struck the opener on his return to the starting XI ahead of Frazier Campbell, who was relegated to the bench. Warnock’s side face Aston Villa, Spurs and Stoke in their next four, handing that trio a further platform to impress.

Three Defeats in Three For Lifeless Liverpool

Liverpool’s dire form continued with yesterday’s loss, begging the question of whether Brendan Rodger’s team can harbour any hopes challenging at the summit without Daniel Sturridge. Rickie Lambert did at least seize his chance by netting his side’s only goal and could now keep his starting spot ahead of Mario Balotelli once the Italian (who has reached 35 attempts without a goal) returns from a groin injury. Stoke, Leicester and Sunderland are up next for the Reds and do still offer some potential, though managers are unlikely to invest in a side with two goals in their last four. Meanwhile, Raheem Sterling’s remaining owners (37%) are likely to view his performance yesterday as the final straw and we can expect significant sales leading into Gameweek 13.

Ramirez’s Red Tames Tigers

Steve Bruce opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation in Hull’s 2-1 defeat to Spurs yesterday, recalling the fit-again Michael Dawson alongside skipper Curtis Davies. Andrew Robertson also came in at left-back, pushing Robbie Brady into a flank role on the left. Mo Diame sat out with a knee problem, with Bruce confirming that the midfielder will undergo scans later this week. In his absence, the Hull boss handed a first start to Gaston Ramirez on the right flank but saw him suffer an early bath which, ultimately, cost Hull their foothold in the match. Pending an appeal, Ramirez will now miss the next three league encounters which will force the Tigers into a reshuffle. That could offer Abel Hernandez a reprieve after the striker was dropped for the Spurs clash.

Kane Stakes His Claim

Harry Kane continued his excellent form in the Spurs attack by notching the first goal of their comeback win on Humberside. The youngster has 11 goals in 16 appearances this season and with three home fixtures in his next five (EVE, CPL, BUR), the 4.8-valued striker looks a superb “enabler” to generate funds in our midfields. Emmanuel Adebayor missed yesterday’s encounter with a back problem but would seemingly face an uphill task to regain a starting role for the Gameweek 13 visit of Everton. Having said that, with Gameweek 14 occurring in midweek, the likelihood of rotation in the Spurs front line is something to consider.

Eriksen Steps Up

With leading scorer Nacer Chadli missing out due to a knee injury, Cristian Eriksen played a starring role for Mauricio Pochettino’s side yesterday by grabbing a goal and an assist, propelling himself into the top ten highest scoring midfielders in FPL. The Dane had been subbed off at the break in his last two outings, but looks key to his side’s chances if Chadli is ruled out for any length of time. Eriksen’s attacking threat is highlighted by the fact that only Yaya Toure has fired in more efforts from midfield this season than the former Ajax man. Now down to 7.8, and with an ownership of just 7.6%, Eriksen provides an option over Spurs’ aforementioned fixtures and a potentially effective differential.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Is Wayne Rooney ready to smash the template and become one of an expensive frontline, alongside Costa or Aguero. Or do you shun one of that pair to accomodate him? Is ADM a better option perhaps.

I'm on a wildcard at the moment and found myself with a straight choice ADM and Austin or Rooney and Downing (if fit). Currently favouring the latter. Rooney is a streaky player and he's clearly in the midst of a streak. Plus with Falcao out next weekend he looks likely to play up front, interchanging with ADM and RVP throughout.

I have Sanchez, Oscar, Siggy and Downing as my mids...not bad. I'd want one of ADM or Rooney this weekend.

Also Rooney is a great differential among the top 10K at the moment (this is the group I'm most interested in rather than overall ownership). With Sanchez, Costa and Aguero I have all their captains covered. Rooney (c) is even looking appealing this weekend given Costa is away and can't get bonus while Aguero has Southampton away.

I'm on a wildcard s have time to wait. If Downing is still looking dodgy by Friday I'd go ADM and Austin. Apart from Downing there are no others in that price bracket that appeal, whereas there are one or two budget strikers that do.

Costa and Aguero have proven thamselves as the two expensive forwards to own this year, the only reason you would pick someone over them is to save funds, so Bony might save you 2 mill and weigh your decision as then you can get Hazard instead of Oscar, but if you have 10+ mill to spend, then you'd be mad to choose Rooney over the two big guns.

Costa is consistent but he's not getting the sort of huge scores his price promises. He is not a bonus magnet and for that price he needs to be. There is a strong case for Haz and Fab and ditching Costa..big risk though, but as the world's number 6 has shown Costa is not essential.

Nope, no player is essential this year, more-so than any other year.

Siggy comes close due to his price and fixtures..

Even Sanchez can be ignored at that price with so many options around..

He's important, but if you load up with expensive mids not essential. His huge gwk 8 capt haul though was a game changer in terms of rank. You need a lot of luck to cover that sort of score - which he is capable of getting often.

I agree that there is a case for ditching Costa and getting both Hazard and Cesc, as the premium mids are performing, but I wouldn't ditch Costa for Rooney at all, the only way Costa is leaving my team is to make up some funds to inject into midfield.

Costa may not be exploding, but he's reliable and he gets more points than most forwards.

Problem is when he doesn´t... I thought of it but gave up immediately due to his interchange in positions which is what will happen during Xmas time and having ADM as a midfielder doesn´t make sense to spend all that money on a forward that sometimes isn´t a forward at all. That said, he is in his purple patch atm.

Ok, maybe on a WC, but I'm struggling to even get both Aguero and Costa! My probable team after this week:

          Foster/Krul
          Baines/Betrand/Naylor/Chambers/Wisdom
          Sanchez/Hazard/Siggy/Downing/Marney
          Aguero/Costa/Berahino

To get Rooney (and I'd want a Chelsea defender first and foremost), I'd have to do something like Sanchez -> Chadli. I cannot see Rooney scoring well enough to compensate for that.

I took out Costa last week for Rooney! Costa just isn't worth the money when Cesc is cheaper and getting more points, especially now that I was Oscar in my midfield as well!

Cesc has only scored 3 more points than Costa because Costa has missed two matches.

So I suppose it depends a bit on how many more matches Costa is likely to miss.

Isn't it also true that Cesc usually scores better in the first half of the season than later?

Trouble is there are a few good mid options like Sigurdsson and Downing potentially.

I think it would be too sweeping to say that midfield only is where to invest.

If I was brave (which I'm not) I'd dump Costa and use that money to get Fab/Haz and a Chelsea defender. But the risk of ditching Costa is too great at the moment if I want to stay in the top 5K. Costa though is not doing enough to earn the armband, which is a worry.

i will not ditch costa for someone like hazard. A consistent 6pts player rather than hot and cold hazard. and with the presence of siggy/downing/chadli its fair to say that having a mid price player could be better in terms of maximizing your point potential.

I haven't owned Costa for weeks and have maintained a top 1k position (currently 408). Honestly, you can live without him. I've gone for the Fabregas/Hazard dynamic duo and it's paying off nicely at the moment.

I just need to get on the Chelsea defence and I'm happy (thinking Terry for a bit of a diff).

Given that you can't have all three of Costa, Aguero and Rooney without butchering your midfield, probably the question is: is Rooney a better option than Aguero or Costa?

I think that Aguero is undroppable, despite last week's blank. His underlying stats are still too strong.
Costa seems destined to never be on the receiving end of bonus or assists, so will rely on a steady stream of goals to keep his points flowing.

If Rooney gets a good run of form, then he could supplant Costa as the second striker. But I watched the match and Rooney didn't show anything to persuade investment- yet. As a team they still didn't impress- man utds first shot on goal was their second goal late in the match (after the own goal).

If I was in a wildcard, between Costa and Rooney I'd choose Costa because of Chelsea's favourable fixtures. However, I'm now looking at leaving Costa and Rooney altogether and going for 2 chelsea mids and a chelsea defender.

I also agree that ditching Costa and going for two strong Chelsea mids is a very valid question worth posing.

It's certainly doable if you choose 2 of the 3 but if you go for the triumvirate up front then I feel you'll be missing out too much in midfield or won't be able to afford the better value baines+chelsea defender combo. Something has to give somewhere unless you have a crazy high TV.

To me the players i want most are aguero, sanchez, hazard, costa, rooney in that order, i have the first 4.

Getting rooney as well Is doable by downgrading baines and running with 5 defenders under 5m so probably a step too far but ive not ruled it out

Latter looks better for you though likely ruined with the downing injury.

Another goal or two for rooney this week and people will be forced to find a way

I dropped Costa for Sanchez, Fab for Tadic, and captained Sanchez which has powered me up to 317th in the world? Turning point for me, now that Southampton fixtures combined with PTAs underperformance. I downgraded Tadic and upgraded Pelle to Costa again this week, now that Chelsea fixtures are turning better.

Keeping an eye on Rooney as a potential prospect, may sacrifice Sanchez if formers form picks up.

Luck is obviously a big factor, but if you look at someone like Evs, or even Mark, there are clearly good FPL players. The cream always rises etc., and you won't do well over the whole season just by luck.

Similar problems. 5 injured players plus Chester.
I can wait for Chadli as I have a point 1 transfer differential and he need 160 000 transfers out in the gameweek to change price.
Baines can be left and more will be known when Everton play Wolfsburg.
Clyene you have to hope Southampton have a blinder in defence.
Sakho you could change to Kane who will go up after tomorrow.
Leaves you with 1.2 mil to Chadli who is a gamble to keep after Friday. If you have his full value replace him with Eriksen.
