Captain Sensible – Gameweek 13

Our weekly analysis of the Captaincy contenders arrives once again this Thursday evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Diego Costa is the leading candidate ahead of Chelsea’s trip to Sunderland this weekend. With a variety of options available, though, the summer signing has earned only 27% of the votes cast despite scoring in eight of his 10 appearances so far – he’ll fancy his chances of extending that run against a defence with a single shut-out in six.

Alexis Sanchez (14%) heads the chasing pack as Arsenal make their way to the Hawthorns. As evidenced by last night’s win over Dortmund, a move out to the left flank doesn’t seem to have diminished his prospects as he look to continue the form which has delivered five goals in the last four Gameweeks. Given that the Baggies have conceded twice in five of the last six, the visitors will be optimistic of returning to winning ways.

Man United’s home encounter against Hull brings Wayne Rooney and Angel Di Maria into contention. Both are backed by 12% heading into the Tigers clash – Louis van Gaal’s decision to roll out a 3-4-1-2 earned the Argentine a start up front against Arsenal last weekend, whilst Rooney’s goal and maximum bonus at the Emirates perhaps hints that he’s about to embark on a streak of goals. Certainly, with two clean sheets in their last 11, Steve Bruce’s defence have been anything but resilient as they head to Old Trafford.

In spite of his midweek hat-trick against Bayern, Sergio Aguero has been backed by just 7% of voters so far as Man City travel to Southampton. Given the Saints have conceded just one goal in front of their own fans, though, he clearly has his work cut out to deliver, having failed to produce the goods at home to Swansea last time out.

Eden Hazard and Wilfried Bony also look viable armband options this week, according to the votes cast so far. Both have persuaded over 5% to hand them the armband but, bearing in mind he’s managed just two assists on his travels, the Chelsea winger will need to improve his away displays to justify that show of faith. Bony has notched five times in the last six, and with a home encounter against Palace’s porous defence on his agenda, could well be set to extend that run.

"touch and go" is being used quite a bit now. Basically means more likely than not he misses out

I was hoping Duff would be back. Having Baines, Chadli and Duff injured is a worry.

I tend to take it to mean 50-50. It's open to interpretation I suppose.

50/50 , touch and go , imo. Depends who you talking too though.

You have 3FT's and 2.1itb to replace Chambers-Tadic-Pelle - which players do you pick?

    Begovic Krul
    Baines Clyne Naylor Chambers Wisdom
    Sanchez Siggy Downing Oscar Tadic
    Aguero Austin Pelle

Terry-Hazard-Ings(+0.4) is my favourite option right now, but is there something better?

I don't like his fixtures because i don't think they'll keep alot of CS's in the next 6, and also because his fixtures don't rotate well with others in my defense in the next 6-10gw's. He's effectively redundant

Much rather have another GK and take a gamble on McNair for United defensive cover. Also not too crazy about Clichy, City not tight at all. And much rather have Sanchez over ADM. Around 6-7.

Meh, Bolasie for me. Hes much more lively and therefore likelier to create something. Yeah hes lacking end product, but hes creating something. Jedinak literally has close to zero goal threat apart from fk`s and penos, and those are few and far apart.

      1. Reedy
        • 13 Years
        9 years, 6 months ago

It was a driving run from Jedinak that set up the assist for Palace's first goal last week. OK, no points for assisting the assister but he does get involved in the final third. Bolasie's better from open play though I agree.

        1. TeamSteam
          • 11 Years

He goes on the occasional run, but he was facing one of the most underwhelming teams in the BPL that game, mind you. Hes very much a defensive minded midfielder with pen duties and a good freekick on him. I think long if nothing else, Bolasie is more explosive than Jedi.

      Jedinak- PK's & Set pieces.
Although with CPL's run up to the Jan WC idk if I'd be that excited by either.

How is Matic for collecting BPs? I'm looking for a mid at 5.6 or less and Chelsea's fixtures are nice. Or is it better to pick a bit more of an attacking player - fairly good options across the board there?

I love seeing the Gerrard, Scholes and Lampard debates. All three played a different style of football and were remarkable. Instead of arguing people should accept they were all world class in their own little way.

No, they shouldn't. There's a reason why Scholes is the one all the top players talk about. Gerrard was class but Lampard shouldn't even be in the discussion.

There were plenty of players about who could've offered what he did or more. And when talking about the most important players to the Chelsea machine he's well down the list.

The same would never be said for Scholes.

Gerrard, for one. Rooney would've offered Chelsea twice as much. Hell, VdV would've excelled in that role. And I'm not even trying hard right now.

Drogba, Essien, Makelele, JT, Carvalho, Cole and Robben were all more important to Chelsea's success off the top of my head.

Are Xavi and Zidane football gods to you? Does a player have to be validated by them?

Zidane - "Is he the best in the world? He might not get the attention of (Lionel) Messi and Ronaldo but yes, I think he just might be. If you don't have a player like Steven Gerrard, who is the engine room, it can affect the whole team. When we were winning league titles and European Cups at Real, I always said Claude Makelele was our most important player. There is no way myself, (Luis) Figo or Raul would have been able to do what we did without Claude and the same goes for Liverpool and Gerrard. He has great passing ability, can tackle and scores goals, but most importantly he gives the players around him confidence and belief. You can't learn that -- players like him are just born with that presence."

Even Fergie complimented him. All three players I mentioned were great 🙂

People are so biased when offering their opinions on this. Every United fan says Gerrard is overrated and shit since hes never won the league, whilst some might say that fat Frank only got those goals because of penalties etc etc. Fact of the matter is that like youre saying, they were all world class in their seperate teams and in their own right. For me Scholes were the best at directing/dominating play and Lamps the best at getting into the box and that good stuff, whilst Gerrard for me was the most complete with a good mix of both.

      Scholes was top class
Don't think Gerrard or Lampard were much better than each other really.. Lampard probably a better goal poacher over a longer period of time but Gerrard possibly had more to his midfield game.
Scholes the best for longevity followed by Lampard possibly, Gerrard seems to be embarrassing himself now. Although he is playing more than the other two did which can't be helping.

Or would you prefer this team ?

      Foster, Myhill
      Azpilicueta, Naylor, Yun, Hutton, Wisdom
      Hazard, Fabregas, Sanchez, Siggy, Boyd
      Rooney, Aguero, Austin

      Why not:

      Forster, De Gea
      Azpi, Baines, Bertrand, Clyne, Chambers
      Sanchez, ADM, Fab, Hazard, Yaya
      Costa, Aguero, Rooney

I mean come on. What were you thinking

a lot of flags and 2FT... any input would be great

    - I have Krul, and Myhill, rather than Elliott. Is Krul going to start? Should I get Elliott in for insurance?
    - Baines and Duff are flagged, but i have Bertrand, Naylor and Dummett too
    - Chadli - want to keep, as I don't have the cash to upgrade him to Sanchez - to go alongside Fab and ADM

Also want to get rid of Pelle for Bony or Austin.

    Torn between
    A) Pelle --> Bony/Austin
    B) Pelle --> Bony/Austin; Myhill --> Elliott

Which one of these two transfers would you do this GW? The other one will be my transfer next GW.

    A) Yun + Bony
    B) Terry + Ings

Yun and Bony. I've been bitten by Chelsea's defence before (mauled actually, had three of 'em and it cost me dear).

    -8 to get in Sanchez
    -4 to get in Baines

Who's more essential - Sanchez or Baines????

I'd be inclined to say Baines, simply because there's no other player like him, whereas Sanchez has alternatives like Toure, Hazard, ADM, etc

        this.
Baines is a unique threat and offers tremendous value
Sanchez is good, but hi price is HIGH, and there are alternatives: Fab, Haz, ADM

yeh already have aguero costa ADM Hazard, so probably get Baines. Feel ive missed the ship for Sanchez. Just worry that he may be Suarez of this season.

"the suarez of this season" has already been 3-4 different players, and we're only 12gw's in... Costa>ADM>Aguero>Sanchez... I predict Hazard or Yaya will be the next one in line...

no one as good as him
no one as hard working as him
no one as brilliant positionally as him
no one as bad ass as him
no one as ugly as him
no one cheating as much as him

yeh possible although I fear sanchez could be "the one" due to his desire, fight etc...
Just hoping that walcott and giroud returning can disrupt his output
