Spot the Differential

Spot the Differential – Gameweek 18

Our Christmas Day coverage continues as we serve us a trio of overlooked alternatives ahead of tomorrow’s deadline. All three of our picks were amongst the goals last weekend and have the Boxing Day fixtures to spark another rise up the Fantasy standings.

Radamel Falcao

Back in the United starting line-up for the first time since Gameweek 7 last weekend, the Colombian grabbed a goal and maximum bonus points in a 1-1 draw at Villa. Louis van Gaal has been critical over Falcao’s fitness but with his side searching for a winner on Saturday, the Dutchman decided to sub off Robin van Persie instead – dispelling any doubts over the South American’s match sharpness for the festive period.

Falcao looks in line to retain his start alongside Van Persie for a plum home clash with Newcastle tomorrow. Intriguingly, when compared to his fellow forward, the loan acquisition has been quicker for both minutes per shot (24.2 to 32) and minutes per key pass (51.4 to 76.6) so far this season – indeed, Falcao has scored or assisted in all four of his appearances in Van Gaal’s XI.

Priced at 10.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and with an ownership of just 2%, Falcao’s scoring history suggests he could be the ultimate differential if he can remain injury-free from this point on. The Magpies meet hands him the chance to cement his spot in Van Gaal’s plans and fire his way immediately onto Fantasy radars – with showdowns against Spurs and Stoke’s porous defences to follow, the festive period could be a prosperous one.

Adam Johnson

Much to the chagrin of Newcastle supporters, the Black Cats wide man seems to have rediscovered his form just in time for the Christmas period. Having provided the assist for Sunderland’s strike in a 1-1 draw with West Ham, Johnson went one better by firing the winner in last Sunday lunchtime’s Tyne-Wear derby to ease the pressure on Gus Poyet’s battlers.

A mere 2% ownership reflects a series of displays which have seen him manage just two goals and a single assist so far but with his form on the rise, Johnson – who racked up eight strikes and six assists in the campaign gone by – could be a decent short-term punt ahead of back-to-back matches against Hull and Villa. Bearing in mind that Sunderland then face City, Liverpool and Spurs, Poyet will be desperate to maintain momentum prior to the New Year’s Day trip to the Etihad and the 6.0-priced midfielder’s contribution in the final third could be pivotal to the Wearsiders’ fortunes.

Philippe Coutinho

While the focus was on Raheem Sterling’s new role through the middle in last week’s clash against Arsenal, the little Brazilian overshadowed his team-mate with a goal and maximum bonus points last Sunday afternoon.

There’s no doubt Coutinho is an erratic performer, with Brendan Rodgers still struggling to exploit his undoubted abilities since arriving on Anfield. A recent switch of formation could prove the turning point for the South American, though – stationed on the right of a front three as Rodgers reverts to last season’s high-pressing approach, he’s stepped up his attacking output in recent outings.

Over his last four league appearances, Coutinho has almost matched Sterling for shots (11 to 12) and efforts in the area (six to seven) and, when compared to his previous performances, his minutes per shot (from 43.2 to 27.2) and minutes per chance created (147.4 to 68) have both improved considerably. A trip to Burnley signals the start of a superb run of fixtures for Rodgers’ side and, at a price of 7.6, Coutinho may prove a viable alternative to the likes of Sterling if he can push on from last week’s strike.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

B if it's free. Or Wes Brown is also an option and should play all games due to Sunderland's defensive injuries.

I am curious that why people are scared of selling Costa!!! I know he can score this week but that would be true for any week

If we look at his returns:

After GW4, he has played almost full 10 matches and have given only 3.7 PPG (Scored in 5 matches).

If we remove GW3 & 4 where he scored 5 goals, his season PPG is 4

Is he worth occupying a forward place, especially at that price. No IMO!!!

With Kun's injury, I think people are afraid to lose him as he's their 'big-hitter' up front.

and I am seriously worried about not having Giroud this week 😉

I agree with this, and unless he really plays well tomorrow I'll probably sell.

You would want to bring Aguero back instead of Costa. His playing style isn't gonna change so I don't think his PPG gonna improve by that margin

yes a little afraid as I'm top of my ML now and everyone behind has him..plus I still have some faith in him and no other real standout explosive forwards..the rest are scoring a goal max per game as expected..while costa being in chelsea you would expect not less than that..also I have not save up any ft since a month ago so jsut try to avoid hit while there are no standout options..

So is he. Scoring around a goal per match (5 in last 10 though)

yeah..may be not much to lose when I look behind my rivals ? more concerned about ML than the overall ranking , and still green arrow lately fortunately xD still have some faith in him..

How're Ultimate players approaching tomorrow? Are you doing anything differently?

I've got pretty used to my subs bench and being able to switch the duds and the captains armband, but I guess it's just back to a more traditional FPL approach now: take fewer risks, and make sure the bench is in order?

Still good going! I'm up to 5th :-D. Really enjoying it, didn't expect it to be my main game but I've really taken to it.

Great stuff WW keep it going. Yeah likewise , great to have the options Ultimate gives you.
Missed a couple of gw subs though , so in second half going to concentrate on the monthly win.

Cheers! Second half of the season is going to be really interesting based on how people use the transfer window. I can see a serious template squad emerging up the top!

Any more opinions on this .

      Boyd > Sterling

      Leaves me with

      Foster

      Zab , Ivan , Chambers

      Sterling , Hazard , Sanchez , Eriksen , Oscar

      Austin , Bony

Mannone , Carroll , wisdom, caulker

Not a long term route , but think it's rotation carnage next few days so a strong bench is nice

Id be more inclined to do Oscar > Sterling and play Caroll.

Don't see it myself , rested so nailed on with nice home fixture

While all these talks about selling Costa ongoing, I might actually Captain him. He's getting chances and I have a feeling this might be the week when most of them are converted.

He wont start all 3 games, thats why they got Drogba. I wouldnt captain him in home game, the fixtures are worse after that so i can see him being rested tomorrow

Chambers could well be rested. Id be leaning towards Cresswell > JT if you have the funds.

Yes Siggy's ownership is too high, if you have no other issues go for anyone except Sterling (If you want Liverpool go for Coutinho)

Merry Christmas from Greece! I need some help... I saved funds to do Carroll -> RVP but his 60 min substitution made me reconsider even saving transfer. I also have Yun but 3 defenders with decent fixtures and Hazard's possible rest will bring Boyd in. Any suggestions(or captain advice?)?

      Heaton (4.0)
      Baines, Clyne, Naylor (Wisdom, Yun)
      Sanchez, Yaya, Hazard, Eriksen (Boyd)
      Carroll, Kane, Austin

      1 FT 5,7 in Bank

I would get rid of Carroll for perhaps Falcao if you can afford, Carroll has some difficult fixtures ahead and is unlikely to grab goals. Otherwise good team. Captain Sanchez and put your VC on Falcao if you get him, that way, if Sanchez is rested you'll get Falcao as Sanchez is unlikely to make a cameo therefore.

will people stop posting the news that hazard has been declared fit by...hazard! chadly did the same thing remember. If anything jose might be a little annoyed he announced it himself.

But it's what we have. Did Jose say today or yesterday that he's not fit? In that case, will People stop saying he's injured?
