Versus – Eriksen, Cazorla and Oscar

With winter Wildcards in play, we turn our focus on three in-form midfielders in our second members article of the week. Christian Eriksen, Santi Cazorla and Oscar were all amongst the goals in Gameweek 22 and are more or less identically priced in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – the former pair set you back 8.2, whilst the Chelsea man is slightly more expensive at 8.3.

With Alexis Sanchez and Eden Hazard looking nailed on for most Fantasy managers, the trio are vying for a spot as the third pricey midfielder in many plans right now. As more look to restructure their sides ahead of the Gameweek 23 deadline in ten days’ time, we assess their recent matches and delve into the data over their last six appearances.

Can anyone explain how City are now in 6th place? I know they get substantial 'licensing fees' from their womens' team and other franchises (check it out, it's true) but this is ridiculous. All the others make sense but PSG and City have to be benefiting from inflated sponsorship deals from the Middle East (in effect from their owners). FFP discounts these so I'm not sure they can really be counted as revenues at all. Although I doubt Deloitte has the slightest interest in FFP apart from advising clients how to get around it.

      1. Ruth_NZ

Possibly. The Adidas and Chevrolet deals make a massive difference.

If you look inside these numbers the big difference between the clubs is on commercial revenues. The 60k Emirates, for example, gives Arsenal around £100m per season from matchday revenues. The 42k Stamford Bridge gives Chelsea around £75m. A £25m difference when you are talking about these levels of revenue is minor.

The CL is also less important for direct revenues than people imagine. Chelsea - who have done very well in Europe - have made around £40m per season from CL/EL revenues over the last few seasons. That's why United can stand a season outside it - it doesn't impact their overall revenues that heavily.

Being outside the CL for longer would be more of a problem, however. Commercial income is the biggest single component of the revenues for all these clubs. And sponsors want CL exposure and success. Don't deliver it and the big bucks start to disappear.

This is a list of revenues. FFP is of no consequence in the business world.

Like others have said, these are mostly sponsorship sums, not just City but United to for example.

Haha, yeah N.Taylor is the only player I have had since gameweek 1. I guess I have a soft spot for him, but also Swansea's fixtures look great from gameweek 24 onwards - their defence has racked up quite a lot of clean sheets against bottom half teams. I will reconsider after this week.

Good point about downgrading Boyd. I could probably swap Taylor for a Southampton defender thenm

Looks like quite a few are in the same boat as me.

Currently on a wildcard, definitely want Aguero for GW24 at home to Hull but not so fussed about owning him away to Chelsea this week.

    So, which is better:

    Aguero (che) + 1FT

    or

Any other striker as a one week punt (Falcao at home to Leicester looks a prime candidate)

I see the FT as 4 points in most cases.
One injury to a main player & you need a hit for both.
If City score, Aguero should have a part in it.

Well let's look at the best case scenario if you went with a placeholder. Something like Aguero blank (2 pts) and your punt 2 goals (13 pts). Take away 4 points as it basically means it stops you from doing a transfer down the line, so the 'maximum' possible gain is 13-2-4 = 7 points. Obviously a brace isn't easy to predict, but I'm sure you'd take that any day of the week.

Now let's look at the worst case scenario. Aguero one goal (I'm being generous, we know how explosive he can be and Chelsea conceded 5 to Spurs recently) so that's 8 pts maybe, and the worst case scenario for your placeholder is a blank. You'd then have to use your transfer to get Aguero in, I'll count that as 4 points too so it's fair so that would mean the results would be 2-8-4 = -10. You also have to factor in that many players around you will have Aguero, so the deficit you get is arguably 'bigger' than the gain you'd get if your punt came off. It's important to also consider the opportunity cost - planning to get Kun the next week could turn into a disaster if injuries hit your squad.

I think you know what I'm getting at so I'll stop now, but have a think about if the potential risk outweighs the potential reward. Hopefully this makes sense...

Great summary, thanks Innsie - that frames the argument nicely.

If we're going to get really picky then we could always factor in the possibility of Aguero getting injured against Chelsea. In that situation if I'd gone with a 1 week punt I wouldn't want to bring him in and could in fact end up saving a transfer as opposed to burning one removing Aguero. The same injury risk factor doesn't really apply the other way around as I'd be planning to remove the punt anyway so if they got hurt I wouldn't be losing anything.

            Wow, this is complicated! 🙂

"Aguero one goal (I'm being generous, we know how explosive he can be and Chelsea conceded 5 to Spurs recently)"...

City have scored a total of 2 goals in their last 4 PL games at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have conceded a total of 3 goals in PL games at Stamford Bridge all season. The odds of an Aguero haul are small. The odds of an Aguero blank are considerable.

True. I think this really is the worst case scenario: Aguero scores one. Add the fact that hat tricks are extremely rarely scored against the top teams. And then consider that there are a couple of matches in which a hat trick, or say 2 goals and an assist, would not be unthinkable for a good forward, and I'd say there are points to be won here.

Last 4 Chelsea-City PL games at Stamford Bridge: Chelsea 3 wins, 1 drawn. Chelsea 6 goals, City 2.

It is highly likely to be a low scoring game. A punt for Aguero seems sensible. For me I'm only taking my wildcard in GW 24 so it's easy, I just won't bring Aguero in till then.

Fair point, Aguero's goalscoring chances are as low as they'll be all season in this fixture so with a complete free choice of any striker in the game I should be able to find a better option. Lack of confidence in my abilities is hampering me I guess!

As you're on a wildcard now, you could expect to be able to look forward enough to have so complete team that you would not need new FT's right away. So, you can as well plan to use one on Aguero, as that's the only burning question, to me at least.

Who is the most nailed on arsenal defender, apart from Kos and Mert?

      9 years, 4 months ago

I don't think anyone else is, Bellerin/Chambers/Debuchy all can play RB, with last 2 poss CB. On the other side Monreal and Gibbs. It's far from guaranteed but Ospina might be a better shout, but again not guaranteed to start.

Thanks, I have 5.8 and was wanting an arsenal defender for 1 week. 0.1 short of Koscielny so I was looking at the cheaper options.

Bellerin/Monreal are your best bets then - they're the most likely fullbacks this week. Maybe wait for some more team news.

JWP and Puncheon as 5th mid spots.

With Bellerin I'd rotate with Wisdom/Fonte.
        Kos play always.

Without Costa I'd get Fabregas instead of Silva.

Why would you rotate Bellerin but play Koscielny every week? Their scores will be pegged against one another most weeks.

Kosc is heavy hitter in defence. Great goal threat and hoovers BAPs.

Sure, but the BAPs only usually come when a clean sheet is achieved and goals are so infrequent as to not be worth worrying about and just be pleased when they come.

Each to their own - I tend to play my defenders on likelihood of clean sheet and that will be equal for Koscielny and Bellerin (assuming both are playing of course!)
