Moving Target

Moving Target – Wilfried Bony

Manchester City bolstered their forward options last week by snapping up Wilfried Bony from Swansea City. Arriving for a reported fee of £28m, the 26-year-old has signed a four-and-a-half year contract for the champions and will be available for selection once his Africa Cup of Nations commitments with Ivory Coast come to an end.

Manuel Pellegrini took time out to discuss his swoop with the club’s official website and cited Bony’s excellent record in the Premier League as one of the key reasons for his acquisition:

“He is very difficult to mark because he is so strong. He is an intelligent footballer who has skill and power. His goals record has been excellent since he came to England. He adapted very quickly to the game here and I think he will settle in at City quickly. He will be a very good addition to our squad. We now have four top-class strikers and I am looking forward to seeing them work together.”

The History

Bony’s career got underway in 2006 with Ivory Coast outfit Issia Wazi. Having failed a trial at Liverpool a year later, the target man made his way to Czech club Sparta Prague, where he racked up 22 goals and five assists in 59 league matches, in addition to scoring 11 times in 20 European matches.

The Ivorian was on his travels midway through the 2010/11 season after being snapped up by Vitesse Arnhem. Bony netted just three times in seven appearances over the first few months but, after establishing himself as a first-team regular the following year, he bagged 17 goals and eight assists from 32 league and play-off matches and followed that up with an eye-catching 31 goals and eight assists from 30 league matches in 2012/13.

Bony’s exploits in the Eredivisie persuaded Swansea to shell out a club record £12m fee for his services in July 2013 and he wasted little time in settling at the Liberty. The Ivorian bagged 26 goals across all competitions for the Welsh club last year, producing 17 goals and four assists in the Premier League, before going on to deliver nine strikes and a pair of assists in 20 top-flight appearances this time around. On the international stage, the 26-year-old has also appeared 32 times for the Ivory Coast and found the net on 11 occasions.

The Prospects

As we’ve seen so often in the past, a move to the Etihad can sound the death knell for many a player’s Fantasy fortunes and in spite of his goal-getting abilities, the jury is out on whether Bony’s career at City will prove worthy of our consideration.

At Swansea, he was the first-choice forward in a lone striker system, providing the power, movement and guile to lead the line with devastating effect – no other player matched Bony’s 20 goals over the 2014 calendar year. In all likelihood, City’s embarrassment of riches up front should allow Pellegrini to roll out his preferred 4-2-2-2 on a regular basis but with Sergio Aguero an automatic pick, Bony is set to battle it out with Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic for pitch time alongside the Argentine.

With a starting role looking far from certain, the Ivorian’s prospects are also dented by a likely lack of spot-kicks. Five of Bony’s league goals for the Swans were converted penalties but, again, you’d expect Aguero to remain at the top of the pecking order, whilst Yaya Toure could hold onto his role as back-up option, leaving his compatriot out of the running.

What may fall in Bony’s favour, though, is his ability to steer clear of injury. On too many occasions over the past couple of years, City have had at least one forward sidelined through one problem or the other – with all three unavailable last month, Pellegrini was forced into adopting a false nine system to cope. Given that Jovetic and Dzeko have managed just over 1,300 minutes between them, there’s hope that Bony could benefit if he can steer clear of the treatment room – City have produced the highest number of attempts on goal this season and, when on the pitch, there’s no doubt he’ll be supplied with chances aplenty.

With doubts over his minutes, though, it’s a case of “wait and see” with this one. Depending on his nation’s progress in the Africa Cup of Nations, Bony may not be back on domestic duties until Gameweek 26, allowing us to build our Wildcard squads and assess the Etihad situation at a later date. Providing Aguero can keep fit, though, it’s difficult to see how the new boy will surpass the Argentine as our favoured City striker of choice in spite of a far more budget-friendly price tag.

From a Swansea perspective, Bony’s move currently puts the 6.5-priced Bafetimbi Gomis in the driving seat as the lone striker. With one goal to his name, though, the Frenchman has failed to replicate his predecessor’s clinical strike rate, whilst his weekend television interview – hinting at broken promises from the Swans hierarchy – hardly suggests all is well. It may well be that Garry Monk turns to loan signing Nelson Oliveira to solve his dilemma up top, then, whilst Gylfi Sigurdsson owners will be hoping the Icelandic international can take over spot-kick duties as a result of the Ivorian’s departure.

Wic last week and had a family emergency so did get to change my super template team. I don't have any punts and team looks damn dull. Current line up
    Foster hamer
    Bert terry wisdom wasi Pva
    Hazard Sanchez chadli downing Boyd
    Aguero Costa Kane
    It's 1.2mil
Downing has paid me off since I got him early on struggling to get rid of him yet
    Options are chadli to puncheon/Elia/tadic.
    Should I do that?

Ha. I was a bit flippant. All these players are too expensive, I think. Sturridge should be much cheaper as of now he'd be a big gamble. Rooney has failed to justify his starting price, so his price should be lower.

RVP's career at the very top is winding down. It's no reflection on him, because he has been a great striker. But there is no account taken of this, in his price.

I work in finance so am well aware of that caveat we put on all our investment projections.

However most companies recruit now on the basis that past behaviour is the best indicator of future performance.

This was why a lot on hear were backing hazard despite his poor start to the season. Of those you mention, past behaviour will tell us Sturridge will score goals between injuries and ozil will be slow and ineffective. Unfortunately Rooney has been recruited into the wrong role by management.

      1. Zasa

What a great hobby for a financial analyst, no?

Ah yes, the famous "Hazard is due" posts. That was quite interesting, it would seem he relies on momentum at the beginning of seasons. Looks like he had the same tendencies at Lille as well.

Past behavior you say? Curious as to how he spans out throughout the season, I've never had the honor to watch him play, let alone have him in my FPL team. Could be a great spanner in the works

    5. Koflok
      • 11 Years

Does not guarantee but we do get some insight of the players ability from their past performance.

Walcott for example, we know he's a fantasy gold if he's fit and playing. He got the ability to get into dangerous position, score goals and create chances. And also he's kinda a golden boy in Arsenal.

We won't know 100% whether he'll be good again but it's a good indicator especially for players with long term injuries.

Say Cattermole is out for the season, we won't be getting him in because we know from past performance that he's no fantasy goldmine. Bad example but pretty similar with Walcott's case.

Other than that form is probably a better indicator.

Say Yaya did well last year, but been playing constantly and hasn't score anything, I won't be getting him in based on past performance.

      1. Koflok
        • 11 Years
        9 years, 3 months ago

then again, 'form' is basically looking at their past few match performances - which means that past performance matters.

      2. Zasa
        • 9 Years
        9 years, 3 months ago

Aye, Walcott's PPG is insane, but still he does have a lingering injury.like you said. Long term injuries are worrisome, albeit reports says his pace has improved in training. In any case, he's definitely worth monitoring, whenever he gets 60 mins, he'll likely make headway for Cazorla soon.

True about Cattermole, and yes there are many players who fit into stereotypical categories of themselves like the Diaby's and Tiote's of this world. We know what to expect from players like that, but then you have your Eriksen's and your Oscar's, who are by far the streakiest players I've encountered. Unpredictability looms for players like them, usually one needs patients to collect their rewards

Form is a great indicator true, past performances would tell me Cazorla is generally marginalized when played on the wings. Most would stay away, but then you have a newly rejuvenated Cazorla playing in the hole and who's one of the most in-form players in the FPl right now. Yet many still doubt his abilities and whether his form can actually translate to FPL points. There are certain players who break the mould each year it seems, who tends to quelm past judgement and excel in new positions/formations.

Fwiw, one should leave past biases out of the equation, imo

Thing is with Falcao, has he really recovered from his cruciate ligament injury? He hasn't played enough to be sure and that particular injury is a hard one to make a 100% recovery from.

But if he is 100% over it and gets regular games he's brilliant value at 10.5 because before the injury he was as good a player as Aguero is, if not better.

I have a Chelsea/Soton/Arsenal defender and they don't rotate well. They are premium so hope home/away is not too much of an issue. The 5.8 price tag is bordering on premium so if a defender should go it would probably be a Soton defender. Having said that, they have defied the odds and keep a good defensive record. A difficult one!

    Walshy you here?

Your Ramsey pick is speaking to me..I'm not entirely sold on Sterling and don't want ADM..though Silva MAY be an option.. (but less tempting when Kun is there and typically enough cover for City attack)

    Really Need help!
I play by monthly score with friends. Currently trailing by 10 pts. Thinking what to do. Current team is

    Elliot Pantil
    Cresswell wisdom Baines Bertrand Dummett
    Sanchez Fabregas Siggy downing Silva
    Costa Austin Carroll

    Should i
    1.) Giroud in for Carroll
2.) do 1.) and take a hit for Kosenly and drop Cresswell
3.) do 1.) and take a hit for AJ and drop Downing/Silva

    Thanks

only if i don't do Carroll to Giroud. 1.6 ITB.

Dont think he is must have but can do something against them. So only 1st one as you can field 3 defenders at back with easy fixtures, not hits required 🙂

    thinking of doing the following..

    Hazard Austin out

    Costa Elia in

Costa is best and safest Chelsea coverage imo. even if he is most expensive.

Things/words around would have been different if Costa blanked and Eden scored against the Swans imo.

Hazard has more points and is cheaper than Costa. Hazard is way more important to have than Costa imo.

Dutch friends tell me that in Holland he is viewed with a peculiar mixture of dislike, disdain and grudging respect.

Dislike and disdain because he is considered to be rude and extremely arrogant.

Grudging respect because he has been very successful as a manager including with a relatively poor pool of Dutch players at the last World Cup.

Basically he is trying to turn Di Maria into Robben. Will look like a stroke of genius if it works.
