It’s Snow Joke

The British obsession with the weather has stepped up a notch this week, with certain quarters of the media predicting widespread, devastating snowstorms, the like of which have not been seen for many years.

The country may not be prepared, however it does not mean that us Fantasy managers shouldn’t be able to brace ourselves for the cold winds ahead. Now could be the time to batten down the hatches just in case this latest weather prediction proves to be more than just a media storm.

No more transfers

Now is certainly not the time to be making an early transfer. If you have already made one this week, then give yourself a slap. It’s never a good idea anyway on an extra long Gameweek. Gylfi Sigurdsson, who was red carded at the weekend in the FA Cup and faces a three-match ban, has already provided evidence of that. We may not know until very late which games are on or off, if any.

What about my captain?

If there are games still on, on the Saturday, but the forecast for Sunday and Monday is very bad, then consider picking your captain (or at least vice captain) from a game you know is definitely on.

Using a Wildcard

Hypothetically let’s say you find out on the Friday that there are only five games left, should you Wildcard so can field eleven players? It might be tempting in the short-term, but could be very detrimental if filling your team full of Leicester players simply because they have a match and Chelsea don’t.  It could be a consideration, if the postponed games happen to be those full of players you are keen to lose, but any late Wildcard decision is likely to be a rushed one and poorly thought through. Maybe its better to just sit tight and let others panic

Double Gameweeks

There has been a sad lack of double Gameweeks this season, and the FA Cup results mean there are likely to be fewer in the future too. However, a displaced polar vortex could be just the disaster we are looking for. If there are many games called off this weekend, then those holding their Wildcards until the last week are going to be sitting very pretty. We will likely not know the dates for double Gameweeks but we will know which clubs are going to have one.

    Great article Triggerlips, thanks.

If only I hadn't made my transfer this week. Consider me admonished.

Depends on how you've done so far. I'm glad I've got mine. I haven't needed it yet.

Me too. Is that the Carlos Tevez(c) one. I got about that too. I think the average was about 11.

My 6-man team scored 47 that week, mainly thanks to captain Tevez's 17*2 . Others weren't so lucky.

It's all abit vague from the forecast I just saw. It could snow anywhere from Wednesday onwards.

Some newspapers are forever reporting obscure weather forecasters predicting terrible weather.

Most of the time they get it completely wrong.

The met office aren't predicting anything particularly dramatic in the next month - just continuing cold and wintry weather with occasional snow and ice.

I find it amusing that Jonty let this get through, given that he is british and might have noticed the complete lack of snow on the horizon.

Trigger is a deadzoner so will be basing his assessment on random tabloid reports, so cant blame him for the overreaction.

I feel like "However, a displaced polar vortex could be just the disaster we are looking for." really captures what Fantasy Football does to us.

Its not usually the snow that calls off games its the conditions around the stadium, if the pavements and roads are all iced up then games can be called because of public safety.

As for the weather, it does turn a lot colder going into the weekend. On Friday we will obviously get a better picture of the situation.

It does seem i have been reading the more sensationalist online papers, and the weather is unlikely to be anywhere near as bad as they were making out.
However it is winter, and there is still some snow about, so i think the article still has some value. Making very early transfers in January and February is not without weather related risk

Make sure your vice captain is playing in a different match to your captain.

I highly doubt any games will be called off, but my 2p.
