Scout Notes – FA Cup Fourth Round – Sunday

Tomas Rosicky steers Arsenal to a narrow win at Brighton with a goal and assist at the Amex. Theo Walcott and Mesut Ozil grab a goal apiece as Arsene Wenger rings the changes. Carles Gil fires Villa into the fifth round with a stunning strike at home to Bournemouth, whilst Diafra Sakho recovers from a back injury to help the Hammers down Bristol City.

Gunners Midfielders in the Goals

The holders advanced to the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 3-2 win over Championship strugglers Brighton yesterday. Arsene Wenger made seven changes to the side which stunned the champions at the Etihad last Sunday – amongst top-flight sides, only Chelsea and Tottenham, with nine apiece, made more alterations from their last competitive match but unlike their London rivals, the Gunners were able to avoid a cup humbling.

Wenger switched from a 4-1-4-1 to a more expansive 4-2-3-1 set-up and fielded Theo Walcott and Mesut Ozil on the flanks, with Aaron Ramsey partnered by Mathieu Flamini in the double-pivot and Tomas Rosicky fielded in “the hole” behind Olivier Giroud. Walcott, Ozil and Rosicky all bagged a goal apiece, with the latter also earning an assist in a man-of-the-match performance against the Seagulls to heighten the number of options currently available to Wenger in the final third of the pitch.

The Arsenal boss handed Alexis Sanchez 20 minutes off the bench as the Chilean replaced the tiring Walcott late on, whilst Ozil was also withdrawn towards the end of the second period after months on the sidelines through injury. It seems likely that both will continue to be eased back into league action, though there’s no doubt that yesterday’s display hands Wenger a real selection headache in the centre of the park which may well persuade some Sanchez owners to invest in Olivier Giroud up top, rather than double up in midfield.

At the back, David Ospina and Hector Bellerin’s stock was arguably boosted by their absence ahead of three home clashes (AVL, LEI, EVE) and a trip to Palace in the next five. After helping their side earn back-to-back league shut-outs, the sub-5.0 pair made way for Wojciech Szczesny and Calum Chambers in goal and at right-back respectively but Arsenal’s defensive frailties returned once again as Brighton notched twice in a five-goal thriller.

Sakho the Hammers’ Hero

A late header from Senegalese striker Diafra Sakho ensured West Ham United advanced to the last 16 of the FA Cup with a narrow 1-0 victory over League One outfit Bristol City at Ashton Gate. With West Ham going well in the league, Sam Allardyce had vowed before Sunday’s clash to take the cup competition seriously and was as good as his word in terms of team selection. The Hammers boss made just one change from the starting line-up which defeated Hull City in their last outing, with Winston Reid replacing James Collins in defence.

Allardyce was left thankful for the impact of his substitutes, Morgan Amalfitano and fit-again goalscorer Sakho, whose recovery from a back injury has, fortuitously for Allardyce, arrived too late for him to participate in the Africa Cup of Nations. Sakho’s display off the bench suggests he could now be set to oust Enner Valencia from the starting XI if his manager continues with a midfield diamond set-up and, now down to a mere 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, he may tempt some on the lookout for a budget option up top. With a tough run of fixtures to follow (liv, MUN, sou, tot, CRY, CHE, ars), though, our enthusiasm in West Ham’s assets is somewhat tempered.

New boy Gil Steers Villa Through

Paul Lambert’s notoriously goal-shy side managed to score more than once in a match for the first time in nearly two months with a 2-1 victory over Championship leaders Bournemouth. The Midlands side  sporting six changes from their home defeat to Liverpool the previous weekend  were helped on their way to the next round with a stunning strike from new playmaker Carles Gil, who is already looking like a shrewd January signing.

Fantasy managers eyeing up the crafty Spaniard should bear in mind that Villa’s next two fixtures – against Arsenal and Chelsea – may not present too many opportunities for the ex-Valencia man to thrive in his new surroundings. Subsequent fixtures thereafter, though (hul, STO, new, WBA, sun, SWA), may just provide the platform for Gil  at 5.0 in FPL  to re-ignite Villa’s season and bring himself onto our radars as a viable fifth midfielder, with Lambert hoping the new boy’s impact can also reignite Christian Benteke’s faltering performances up top.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    My Squad is:

    Foster Myhill
    Baines Terry Bertrand Bellerin PVA
    Sanchez Hazard ADM Chadli JWP
    Aguero Kane Ings

Who do I bench for this weekend? My 3 usual subs Bellerin, PVA and JWP have 3 tastly looking home fixtures...Bellerin especially I fancy to keep a clean sheet home to Villa. Bench Chadli as I have Kane?

If you have a defender with acceptable fixtures to cover him but Baird's are better then go for it. Do not buy Baird if when he doesn't play your defenders have awful fixtures though, it will make you rage.

I just can't bring myself to bring in a midfielder in my striker spot (less points for goals, no clean sheet bonus) it just feels wrong.

I might pay for it because of this outlook but it could work for you in the short term.

I think they tend to forecast a greater number of fallers than fplstatistics.

This means that fff can forecast more of the actual fallers correctly, but also forecast a greater number of potential fallers who then do not fall - and there is also still the occasional actual faller that neither have predicted.

Both are usually pretty good at forecasting rises, but they are less accurate than usual during the January Wildcard period because of wildcard transfers not counting towards rises and falls.

Players with very low ownership are also difficult to get right.

    Giroud + Cazorla + Sanchez.

Overkill or a risk worth taking?

    Pros:
    - Arsenal with great upcoming fixtures
    - Arsenal loves to score a lot of goals and seems like they are hitting some form
    - Kane, who is the one in most of the teams that has to be sacrificed, is facing tough games in the GWs ahead. Also some uncertainty whether he will be lone striker or play as a 10.
    - The lack of a potential Arsenal defender can be easily covered by some rotating value picks (e.g WBA + SUN) or premium defenders from other teams (e.g Southampton, Chelsea, United or City)

    Cons:
    - Cazorla's role can be challenged with Ozil back
    - No room for a Arsenal defender (see comment under Pros)

    What do you say guys?

I'm also considering this but only for 1 week though as using my wildcard week after

For it to be beneficial you need 2 maybe even 3 Arsenal goals per game. Giroud only got 1 assist at the weekend from all those goals too.

This isn't the norm on here but I really like having giroud as a fantasy option.
Although he does have some lukaku like performances he still returns regular points and they are usually points that few other managers get.

Tempted to have him over Caz as third arsenal player. Don't have fear of Caz rotation to the level that some seem to have on here but still think giroud will return more.

To be perfectly honest I think he's the best Arsenal choice of all on value. I agree that he'll almost certainly outscore Cazorla over the final 16 games.

The problem is that there are very good striker options at around 6.0m. Kane and Austin obviously, possibly Defoe, Ings and Berahino as well if you pick your timings. There are no equally good midfielder options at that price that I can see.

So if it comes down to either Giroud plus Johnson or Kane plus Cazorla (for example) the 2nd pair wins out.

I know there was an article on Naughton but do we think he's good buy? Surely when Swans spend 5m on him he'll be a regular starter

'With his manager seemingly unconvinced over the other three right-backs, Naughton certainly has the chance to become a regular in the Swansea starting line-up.'

Would you start Chambers (AVL) or Wisdom (TOT) this week?

Will also be fielding Lloris, Eriksen & Kane (all facing Wisdom) if that makes a difference.....

      Chambers surely?

If I know he was going to start, absolutely.

But he looked pretty average again last night so I wouldn't be surprised if Bellerin got the show (and then the dreaded 1 pointer of the bench becomes a definite possibility).

Wenger started Bellerin at home to MCY when Chambers was fit (I believe) and he had a great game. He looks the better full back to me.

I suppose Wisdom does has a chance of a CS against Spurs although i fully expect Spurs to score tbh

Same, although this is a Pulis side, and Spurs are well, unpredictable.

I will probably run the risk with Chambers and then get niggled when he comes on for a cameo with Wisdom mopping up bonus in a 0-0.

Since I believe Chambo won't start, Wisdom.

You can start Chambers but I doubt he will feature.

Chambers, is this a trick question?

Also, Wisdom could act as a sort of insurance policy if my Spuds fail to deliver.

If you really thought Eriksen and Kane would fail you'd bench one.

    Panti
    Baines Terry fonte

A, although Terry will outscore Cahill now Puncheon is back in favour I think he's a far better FPL player than Moses

Yes. But I cant see Terry outscore Cahill by much. Cahill also has some goal threat and last year they scored equally over the season.

    My Squad is:

    Foster Guzan
    Dummet Cresswell Bertrand Zabaleta Wisdom
    Silva Chadli Sanchez Fabregas Hazard
    Kane Costa Austin

Who do I bench for this weekend? No FT left.
Not comfortable with any of the options but thinking of Guzan, Zabaleta, Wisdom, Austin.

      Wildcard without Aguero.... interesting.

I'd downgrade Ivan to cheap def and swap ADM & Giroud to Sterling/Caz and Aguero if poss

I would rather have Costa for this gameweek at home to City. People in my mini leagues have Costa and I've done without him the majority of the time so I need to catch up. Wait and see how Aguero does, City poor with Yaya currently

Confirmation of something that we already knew. Gabriel has successfully received a work permit and is undergoing his medical as we speak. Deal to be announced in a matter of hours.

Excellent! Very pleased Wenger making this signing in January as opposed to the disaster of last years January window. Hope he gets some game time and gets adjusted to the league quickly as a long term Per replacement.

    A) Kos + P.Jones

    or

    B) Azpil + Gibbs/Monreal/Bellarin

Really don't know who's nailed in the Arsenal defence.
