What an utter disapointment yesterday was. 29 (-4) points and 5 players to go.

Playing Giroud ahead of Jones was truly masterstroke.

I'd be happy with a 29pt game week, well above average.

Like most on here, I enjoy the scout picks article but don't let it overly influence my team- it's one input among many. However, my approach has changed over last few months as I've noticed a bias in the official scout picks that was starting to sway my decision.

I've started to ignore the official scout picks and try to average the individual 4 scouts to get a better view of the world to eliminate this bias.

Case in point, Ozil was featured in 2 of the scout teams but failed to make the official picks.
Cazorla meanwhile is still riding high in the 'watch list' charts.

Costa would regularly appear in the picks during his dry spell despite only being tipped by Mark. Fair enough, it's his site and he gets to make a 'captain's call'. But this season the judgment seems to be unusually off.

Wrote a long reply on my phone but reception cut out. In short the main picks don't have a price restriction hence Aguero over Kane

Ahh, hadn't thought about that. Fair point.

Suppose this season it just works out that the more expensive players haven't performed as well

Pool, have a 6-3-1 record since the middle of December and not a single loss since the holidays. When did this resurgence start for Pool? Well, the turning point was a 3-0 defeat to ManUnited, when BR in his post-game conference insisted that his club had been the better side and deserved to have won despite the scoreline. The weeks that have followed are proof that this wasn't merely blasphemy, Pool have continued to play the 3-4-2-1 formation that BR first tried in that defeat, and the results have followed.

BR's opinion of that loss to United was indeed borne out in the statistics. In that match, Liverpool created nine shots from the "danger zone," the region in the center of the 18-yard-box from which most goals are scored. United had seven. Each club created three clear-cut chances, but United scored two of theirs and Liverpool could not convert. DDG saved nine shots on target and had a monstrous game in goal, and both Sterling and Balo helped him by misfiring in big situations. These are the sort of performances that often come just before a winning streak, and indeed, Liverpool's turnaround has followed just as BR predicted. The underlying stats show a team that is performing at an elite level.

With a back four, Liverpool won six of 15 league games, taking 21 points; with a back three, Liverpool have been victorious in six of ten, procuring 21 points. Pool already have kept five clean sheets in 10 games opting for three central defenders, as many as they managed with four at the back. They have had at least 20 shots in five league games this season; in four of those games, they were playing 3-4-2-1. They have scored as many goals (17) in ten matches in their new-look system (17) as they did in 15 beforehand.

And the 3-4-2-1 features the pivotal element in Rodgers' thinking: a numerical overload in midfield. The spare man accounts for the success. Unless opponents radically alter their own approach, Liverpool always have someone free. It is particularly dangerous when it is one of the twin No. 10s or, to use old-fashioned terminology, the modern-day inside-left and inside-right. Arsenal played a lone holding midfielder and Flamini was unable to track both Coutinho and Lallana. Choose a double pivot in a 4-2-3-1, however, and that leaves Hendo and Lucas able to dictate play against a lone attacking midfielder. Unless a rival manager can find a formation that permits him to pick a quartet of central midfielders (and in more of a rhombus than a diamond), or play 3-4-2-1 themselves, Liverpool will always have an extra man.

Every system has its imperfections, not least because no player is flawless. Liverpool's current shape shows a concentration of players in the centre of the pitch. The corollary is that invariably it means there is space elsewhere. One way of countering BR's tactics might be to use two wingers high up the field, a quartet in midfield and no real striker, as Martinez did against Arsenal last season. One potential flaw lies on the right of the defence, which is patrolled by Can and Markovic, who are both accustomed to operating further forward. Chelsea, and Hazard in particular, threatened to exploit their unfamiliarity with new duties in the Capital One Cup semifinal. Rodgers' squad features many with some of the attributes to play as a right wing-back -- Markovic, Can, Hendo, Johnson, Manquillo, the still injured Flanagan -- and even Sterling has been used there, but, valiantly as the Serb is doing, there is no natural candidate. Perhaps, in time, it is a deficiency that will be exposed.

You know Chile plays 3-5-2 ever since Bielsa took over? It works for certain squads but not for all.

Skrtel makes the 3-5-2 (or any variation) work I believe, because he can cover so much ground in the back. You also need players like Can who are comfortable with the ball in order for it to work. The wingbacks play an essential role as well, as they need to defend as well which may/may not come natural to some players.

I coach 12-13 year olds and we play that system.

The system does have a weakness though, do you know what it is?

      1. Zasa
        • 9 Years
        9 years, 3 months ago

Exactly, great points Rub. Medel for Chile has a similar role to Can, albeit Medel has a big responsibility in bringing the ball into play and playing off Aranguiz and Diaz. Yes, a big key to this formation is the high-press and a great work-rate, especially for the wingbacks. Moreno thankfully has done a great jpb of covering ground and providing enough width on the left to give Sterling some space to maneuver

        Curious, what it it mate?

It is actually a lot more simple that it seems.
Let's assume that the 3-5-2 gives you the 'extra' man advantage on the wings.
Ibe had a field day vs Spurs.

Well how do you counter that?

By putting more players in an area where they don't have the advantage, which is the their backline.

With a 4-3-3 high press (similar to Spurs but not quite) and focus your attack through the middle. The goal is to halt the attack in their half. Prevent them from playing out the back. (This is what makes Can so effective bc he is so comfortable with the ball, most defenders are not)

With three up top, you can have one striker glued to the 'sweeper' (Skrtel in this case), make sure he is not free at anytime. This works because he is forced to hold his position and can't help out (sweep) his defenders without leaving a man wide open. Or worse case scenerio it forces the DM to stay back to help out, making him an extra defender, thereby cancelling the advantage.

Also, even though its not pretty, the long ball is deadly for the 3-5-2. Why? Because the ball travels faster than any defender so by playing long balls as soon as you regain possession to a dominant striker , you negate the wingbacks who are presumably further forward.

This is all in 'theory' of course, assuming everything will work out the way you planned.

The problem is that most managers won't risk playing with 3 up front and most strikers don't like to defend that much but given the right players, one can definitely make it work.

I hope that makes sense, its getting late here.

Yet still we have our frailties when playing Gerrard in CM. Time and again he left Eriksen and Lamela in acres of space just outside the box due to his woeful positioning...this lead to Kane's goal.

Lucas is a big loss on that front. We need Can at RCB and DM.

      1. Zasa
        • 9 Years
        9 years, 3 months ago

Aye, he can't hold the midfield by himself and made some dumb fouls in the game (on Kane too). Also, what are your thoughts on Sakho from a real life perspective? Wasn't he the culprit for the goal more?

        1. Billy Gilmore
          • 11 Years
          9 years, 3 months ago

Aye, he certainly was partially at fault with his positioning on that, but the situation never would've got into that position had Gerrard been tracking the runners like he should be doing as a CM. Skrtel got sucked into the position Gerrard should've been in which then made Sakho drift too far inside.

Saw that LvG's explaination re long balls. Is playing long balls a bad tactic? Or have I missed something, not much into tactics and all, so no idea what he is talking abt and why he is talking abt this. 🙂

      • 14 Years

Big Sam trolled him and he munched. He is meant to be a top manager so would be offended by being called a long ball team.

          not in the long run

dominant defenders (in the air) will easily screw up the whole system

But why he is explaining all this? Even if someone said that they are a long ball team, is there any need to prove that we provided less long balls than our opponent etc etc...

Long Ball Tactic would've been nice if Scholes was still playing...Rooney is the only one who provides decent long balls maybe that's why he plays behind..but the problem is players should know how to receive those as well
