Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 25

The midweek fixtures took their toll on a number of players, as we take our usual post-Gameweek look at the new injuries across the Premier League.

Arsenal
Alexis Sanchez and Aaron Ramsey were both withdrawn due to injury in Arsenal’s win over Leicester on Tuesday evening. The Chilean picked up a problem early on as a result of a challenge from Matthew Upson and lasted 68 minutes before making way, with Arsene Wenger revealing:

“Sanchez got a knock on his knee. I don’t think he was himself. From the moment he got this knock, he was never really comfortable. I was ready to take him off at half-time but he said, ‘no it’s okay, I can go on’. When I watched him play I thought, ‘No, that hasn’t [got better]’. Sometimes when you run it off it’s just a kick but he became worse and I didn’t see him in the second half. I don’t know for how long he will be out and whether he will be out or not. I haven’t seen the doctor.”

The Gunners boss also raised concerns over Ramsey, who lasted just nine minutes as a sub before being forced off. Reports have subsequently suggested the Welshman could be set for up to a month on the sidelines.

“It doesn’t look good when a guy stops straight away and sits down. I left him out [of the starting lineup] to be cautious with him. I put him on and it was not the best of decisions. I can’t say it’s not a worry because after a while, the player cannot play with a free mind. He’s not over-played. I don’t know why this is.”

Chelsea
Oscar missed last night’s win over Everton, with Jose Mourinho explaining:

“Oscar has a minor muscular problem. If we played him today, it is possible we would lose him for a few weeks”

Crystal Palace
Yaya Sanogo lasted less than half an hour of last night’s draw with Newcastle before sustaining a hamstring injury.

Leicester
In his first league start for the Foxes, Matthew Upson was replaced just before the hour mark as a precaution, according to the Foxes website.

Liverpool
The Reds’ assistant boss Colin Pascoe had plenty to discuss during this morning’s press conference. Pascoe revealed the club are awaiting news on the injury that forced Steven Gerrard off against Spurs on Tuesday night:

“Unfortunately, he felt his hamstring just towards the end of the game. He’s having a scan this morning and we’re just waiting for the results to come back on that one.

Pascoe also confirmed Raheem Sterling is being monitored ahead of the weekend cup encounter with Palace, before going on to discuss Daniel Sturridge’s current levels of fitness after months on the sidelines through injury:

“He’s desperate to play 90 minutes. He didn’t want to come off. We knew up to 70 minutes was his maximum. Anything more than that then you’re overstepping it and he could pull a muscle. It’s a progression with Daniel – we can’t push him too much at the moment. We’ll monitor him and see how he is and how he’s training. He’s recovering at the moment. He’s feeling great and he’s feeling well. We’ll have to talk to the sports scientists, but we don’t want to push him; we don’t want to break him. But he’s not far off 90 minutes.””

Manchester City
Manuel Pellegrini revealed the reasons for subbing off Sergio Aguero with 18 minutes remaining of last night’s win over Stoke:

“He felt something in the back. My feeling is it is not too serious and he now has 10 days to recover and train well. I hope he will be fit to face Newcastle.”

Aguero, though, played down any fears and tweeted post-match:

“For the ones asking I’m ok. I stepped out only for precaution. Now let’s keep on working for the very important upcoming commitments.”

Man United
Phil Jones and Daley Blind were both forced off during last night’s win over Burnley. The Dutchman sustained a head knock and tried to play on with an eye injury before eventually making way for Ander Herrera – post-match, Louis van Gaal revealed to MUTV:

“I think, for Jones, we have to wait and see. I think it shall be difficult as he was very disappointed when I spoke with him. Maybe it’s a knee problem so it’s not good. Blind has a headache but I don’t think he is out of the game on Monday [in the FA Cup against Preston North End].”

Newcastle
Siem de Jong is set for another period on the sidelines after suffering a collapsed lung – the second time in the last 18 months their summer signing has been hospitalised with the problem. Local reports earlier this afternoon confirmed Paul Dummett will be assessed after picking up a knee knock during last night’s draw at Palace.

QPR
The Loftus Road outfit were dealt a bitter blow after Leroy Fer – who was amongst the goals in Tuesday’s win at Sunderland – was subsequently ruled out for up to ten weeks with knee ligament damage.

Stoke
Jon Walters missed last night’s home loss to City due to an ongoing knee problem.

West Ham
Andy Carroll is set for a stint on the sidelines after suffering a recurrence of a knee injury in last night’s clash with Southampton. The forward left St Mary’s on crutches, with his manager revealing post-match:

“The sad thing for us is the injury to Andy Carroll which we can ill-afford to take with our injury problems. It’s the same knee. He got kicked on the back of it and felt something was wrong. He stayed up and was a nuisance but I just hope that staying on hasn’t done any damage. He got fit in two-and-a-half weeks but clearly it’s going to take longer this time because it’s the same injury.”

Big Sam is also hoping Mark Noble can recover from the virus that forced him to miss the goalless draw.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Unless there are any fixtures postponed because of bad weather, the blanks and DGWs for the rest of the season are:

    Blanks
GW 27: Tottenham, QPR, Chelsea & Leicester
GW 33: Fixtures involving teams playing in the FA Cup semi finals

    DGWs
GW 28: Tottenham & QPR (and possibly Chelsea & Leicester)
GW 31: Chelsea & Leicester (if they can't play in GW 28)
GW 34: Blanks from GW 33

How do you set it up and what sort of numbers work?

I've got 45 in a ML I set up - not enough to go round I suspect...

There are 8 of us and I think it's perfect. 10 would be too much

Its basically done as a standard draft. Head to Head league.

We keep track of it on a spreadsheet controlled by the commish

12 hour window after you claim a player from the free agents during which players below you in the table can steal him

What other rules do you have? i.e. how many picks from free agents/ trades can you make in a week etc?

Unlimited transfers but obviously you will take points hits which are tough in head to head.

You can trade players with other people too. Makes for a lot of controvacy

Mates and I are planning on setting up for next year, really looking forward to it. Draft weekend will be a laugh.

Do you guys nominate who you're looking to trade a free agent player in for?

Aw the draft conference call was hilarious, great few hours. we had 30 seconds per pick, injured Aguero was a big talking point. 😀

Once the 12 hours has passed you name who you will trade out and they go onto free agents list

I don't enjoy them myself. I don't like the selection process.

I will be setting up an auction-based draft league next year. http://www.fantasyleague.com/Pro/Default.aspx

Less luck, and more skill in selection. You have a set budget and put anonymous bids in for players each round. The highest bid wins. Players like Aguero could take around 40% of your budget to get!

I don't really understand football and certainly no technician. But as an outsider watching Man Utd, they really do look awful. Is that a fair assessment?

    1. Rooney making so many mistakes.
    2. No discernible shape, players running everywhere, like playground football.
    3. RVP & Falcao pose next to no threat.

Sure there are many more so interested to here your thoughts.

Yet we won, under Moyes we'd have gone on to lose that game once Burnley scored

and Moyes would probably have said we played well "we didn't allow them many chances and got near to their box on a few occasions"

I'm convinced that under Moyes we'd have 0 points from our last 2 games, rather than 4.

Moyes spend so long pursuing a (then) unavailable Fabregas, let Fellaini's release clause expire as he was trying to get Baines as well that he let other options (Garay for example) slip away

also managed to alienate Vidic, Ferdinand, RvP and Carrick to name but a few

He could have done had he wanted to.

            It's still missing my point

I researched this earlier. Last season United claimed 4 points when we conceded first (3 v Hull and 1 v Spurs)

We've already rescued 5 this season. Under Moyes we'd have lost v Chelsea, lost away at Saints, lost by more than 1 v City, lost v West Ham, drawn or lost v Burnley, lost at WBA, lost v Liverpool

exactly..Fellaini wasn't even in his initial plan , and us getting Mata could be down to some luck as he needed to play to have his WC chance..Moyes had much more time than LVG in assessing pre-season , more experiences and knowledge about EPL , and despite a worse pre-season results (LVG had a very good pre-season) , he failed to rectify it..many saying that Moyes could have done better with the millions spent like how LVG had , but the problem is he didn't show that he knew exactly how to strengthen , or a successful approach/products in rectifying his squad weaknesses..performance wise both were pretty poor , but definitely we have improved result wise , at least not getting humiliated by rivals like last season .

yeah under Moyes we shipped 4 at City last year, this year under LvG we shipped 1 with 10 men

With Moyes in those circumstances it would have been 6 or 7 (I remember Fergie being fuming with the naiviety we showed in the 6-1)

Moyes lacked the bottle to come out a criticise the players, and when he did he got laughed at as it was too late and too focused on the wrong things

we do indeed, but at least LvG admitted as much last night

we weren't great 2nd half but we were better when we went 4-4-2

Mee and Trippier were flying forward at will in the 1st half. When we switched and put Januzaj and Di Maria wider they were pushed back a lot deeper.

Yep its truly awful to watch.

Really think many of our problems would be solved if we just played with this team:

      ---------------Rooney---------------
      Di Maria----Mata-------Januzaj
      ---------Herrera----Blind/Carrick---
      Shaw----Rojo----Jones----Rafael
      ----------------DDG-----------------

Lots of pace outwide with invention from Mata in the middle
      Fullback can overlap
Yep will be caught out at the back but at least it will be fun to watch!

We have the most fraglile backline ever to have existed in football i swear to god. Even under Fergie: Vidic and Rio were massively injury prone. When i heard we signed Shaw and then talk of Vlaar i was almost in hysterics

In fairness until that first knee injury Vidic was rarely injured

But yeah letting Pique go due to Evans and relying on Smalling and Jones, plus Rafael. All made of glass.

Incredible that a blue chip outfit is relying on kids like McNair, Blackett, Shaw, Smalling, at the back.

If Utd was a FTSE company (not sure they might be), and had senior managers (which footballers are the equivalent off) which such little experience in such positions the board/shareholders would be having kittens.

            I'm amazed it's happening.

The analogy falls down when you look at revenue.

United's gross debt rose this quarter however their quarterly earnings are frequently/consistently in the £100 million range. If they decided to focus solely on their debt, they could clear it very quickly. Even more, the new kit deal with Adidas is astronomical, puts them miles ahead of their fellow PL teams' kit revenue.

So a shareholder is looking at a club that is playing bad football and underperforming yet still signing massive sponsorship deals and earning big money. Football and business are very different at this level 😉

I definitely know what you mean, and I'm sure there are those on the board who love the football aspect spitting acid currently about it. But a lot of folks are quite happy to see it go whatever way as long as the £££ are coming in.

United's business model is starting to really take in big revenue, a result of their aggressive expansion of the brand. With their sponsorship deals you could be talking about the equivalent of buying a Gareth Bale or a Luis Suarez every Summer, galactico level of spending. It is not that I think that is the solution, far from it, but when you have the ability to say "Well, if things go tits up we'll just f**k a load of money at players and fix it," you might find there is a more relaxed attitude among the higher ups.

                    Nah, I agree Somalian.

Aye, it is the way really.

My concern is they continue to f**k money at players without establishing a proper team. I would like a proper CB, aside from that I think that squad is more than capable of being very competitive if they play the right set up. But they don't, which is a nightmare.

Maybe, if it weren't for the blanks in GW27 I'd be inclined to agree...but we're going to need the full use of our squads. Cazorla will still see gametime and could even grab a pen.

Hazard has underratedly had a pretty dull and plodding season. I don't know why he is viewed at as such a bankable captaincy option on here, he hasn't really exploded all year. Hasn't had a brace yet, and doesn't seem to shoot enough for me. Love owning him, don't get me wrong, but never someone I feel comfortable captaining.

Hmm yeah. Whenever I watch him he just looks so dangerous though. Especially at home against weaker sides. Should probably stick with Aguero though.

He always *looks* dangerous, he is world class, but that doesn't translate in big scores often, as Aguero is capable of doing. That said, a goal from Hazard gives you an auto 2 or 3 bonus points on top. Hardly a bad captain score there.
