Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 28

Three players tumbled off the Suspension Tightrope in Gameweek 28’s midweek fixtures, having picked up their 10th yellows of the campaign. Alan Hutton, Gareth Barry and Lee Cattermole will sit out their side’s next two matches as a result.

Hutton will be sidelined for the Villains’ FA cup quarter-final clash against the Baggies this weekend and the Gameweek 29 trip to Sunderland. Barry misses Everton’s home tie against Newcastle and a visit to Loftus Road, while Cattermole sits in the stands as the Black Cats welcome Aston Villa to the Stadium of Light and travel to West Ham in their next two.

On April 12, the requisite number of cumulative yellows that warrants a ban will increase to 15. Until that date, players resting on nine yellows will have to time their tackles to perfection. Swansea’s Neil Taylor and Stoke’s Phil Bardsley were joined by Cesc Fabregas, Ciaran Clark and Seb Larsson in the precarious nine club this week. Fabregas’ 30.1% ownership will doubtless be wincing each time the Spanish playmaker attempts a challenge in Chelsea’s next four ties (SOU, hul, STO, qpr) before the cut-off date.

With regards to players currently serving suspensions, Joey Barton and Mile Jedinak sat out the first of their respective three and four-match bans for violent conduct. The QPR midfielder misses further encounters with Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace, while the Eagles captain won’t be available until Gameweek 32.

In terms of those back in contention, Glenn Murray returns for Palace after serving his one-match ban during their 1-0 defeat to Southampton. In addition, Nemanja Matic, Jack Colback and Morgan Amalfitano also fulfilled their obligations, with the former expected to be fit for the Blues’ next league encounter, despite picking up a minor injury during his Capital One Cup celebrations. Adam Johnson, meanwhile, has been suspended by Sunderland pending the results of a police investigation into off-field allegations.

Although not cautioned during the match, Jonny Evans and Papiss Cisse could face lengthy suspensions after appearing to spit at each other during Manchester United’s visit to St James’ Park. The FIFA rules stipulate that any player guilty of spitting at an opponent should sit out his club’s next six matches in all competitions. Reports in the local press suggest that Cisse could be facing a seven-match ban if found guilty, given that he has already been suspended for violent conduct earlier in the season.

Discussing the matter with the Newcastle website, Cisse has acknowledged his part in the incident as he awaits an announcement from the FA:

”I have apologies to make to a lot of people today. Firstly to my teammates and to our supporters, secondly to Jonny Evans, and thirdly to every football fan who saw the incident between myself and Jonny. I reacted to something I found very unpleasant. Sometimes it is hard not to react, particularly in the heat of the moment.”

Evans, however, released a statement on the United website vehemently denying the accusations, going on to say:

“Having woken up this morning I am shocked to have seen the media coverage from last night’s match. I would like to make it clear that I did not spit at Papiss Cisse. I was totally unaware of any spitting incident and had assumed that the issue at the time was with the challenge and his attempted retaliation to the tackle from the floor. During the game Papiss Cisse and I spoke about the incident and it is clear by my reaction in the television footage that I was totally surprised by any suggestion of spitting. It is not in my character or in my nature to spit at anybody nor is it something I have ever done or would ever do. It is certainly not something that I did last night.”

    Team is currently a mess:

    Pantilimon - Myhill
    Terry - PvA - Bellerin - McShane - Wisdom
    Silva - Ozil - Cazorla - Eriksen - Wanyama
    Aguero - Sturridge - Kane

    £2.4 ITB

Considering using WC to get Hazard and Sanchez in, or I could do it for a -4 by getting rid of Sturridge?

    If I WC, currently thinking:

    Pantilimon - Myhill
    Lovren - Alderweireld - Zouma - Rose - Bellerin
    Sanchez - Hazard - Sterling - Mane - Phillips
    Aguero - Sturridge - Kane

    WC or -4?

Well done, Doos. Unfortunately he may be out again by the end of the game-week - he only has Kane still to play, and he isn't captain - but at least he won't need to get rid of any superfluous QPR or Spurs players afterwards.

It only goes to show that it is quite possible to get a decent score by just having a strong squad and completely ignoring the DGW!

Bringing in Sanchez this week but from GW30 I will need 2 budget midfielders.

My options are: (ownership inside top 10k)

    A) Downing (6.4%) - assists and set pieces
    B) Sigurdsson (1.3%) - assists and set pieces
    C) Henderson (1.5%) - current form just a peak in an up and down season
    D) Chadli (1.2%) - All about goals
    E) Mane (7.5%) - All about goals

    - Very close on the season ticker, all 5 sides are in the top 8 of the ticker when ranked overall for the final 9 fixtures.
    - Henderson has MUN and ars in GW30/31 so that puts me off him. Chadli, is he nailed is he not? Too many questions, I need nailed players with the blanks and doubles coming up. So Mane is a definite.
    - Downing vs Sigurdsson? WHU have had hideous fixtures for the last 8 so no returns from Downing. Do we see an upturn for the run in? Sigurdsson is back, rested and fresh.

    Mane and Sigurdsson or Downing?

Could be but I'd imagine they are facing some long odds to win that cup. Quite a few teams that are better than them still in it, but I guess stranger things have happened. Got a pretty decent draw with a Ukrainian team.

Harder in terms that it's a lot harder to make it as a footballer in today's era. Similar to how getting into medical school 20 years ago was a lot easier. Competition is more fierce.

Hard to say though. Just an argument I have. We'll never know.

Also, we've seen virtually everything Messi's done in his career. There's not a great deal of footage of Pele apart from World Cups & the NASL.

No such thing as harder when you're comparing two entirely different generations. All relative

Chelsea will sell him off for 40M now 😆
Wish he came to Liverpool but Jose trolling by snapping him up.

Good for him. Must be a nice learning experience to get to train with Chelsea week in week out for a year. Glad to see him taking his chances with Fiorentina. Never really got the pitch time to prove himself with Chelsea, although I'm sure that is because he was determined not good enough by Mou. Could be another of the KDB's who flourish once they leave.

Brilliant transfer strategy but a bit annoying as a Liverpool fan!
As least it's not as bad as Spurs a few years poaching all our targets.
            Eriksen, Dempsey, etc. 🙂

    Terry, Clyne, Naughton, Hutton, PvA

Nothing needs changing in the attack.
You can either keep your FT or use it on upgrading your defence.

Punch is worse than Eriksen when it comes to inconsistency. Defoe to Giroud I'd do for sure, while recognizing his current form isn't lasting forever

That's my dilemma. My ML rival has both Giroud and Eriksen and I think he has more chance of hurting me with G-ru than with Eriksen.

I'd think he does too. I'm biased since I'm still recovering from my Giroud --> Defoe disaster move a month back though. When Eriksen hits, he hits harder, and I don't think away to MUN is all that rough these days, especially with how terrible they are against set pieces

Yeah I did exactly the same move! The game where Giroud was on the bench and Defoe was on a mini hot-streak, yeah?!

    Is it worth -4 ?

    Eriksen --> Ozil
    Jones ----> Azpilicueta

or save, wait and do it before GW30

Might as well get Zouma if you're getting Azpilicueta. Both are likely to get rotated.
I'd keep Eriksen for Leicester/Burnley but if you want to get rid of him I'd do:

      Jones>Ivanovic or Terry
      Eriksen>Downing
