Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 29

With only a handful of sides involved in Premier League and FA Cup action since our last update, there’s been little movement among those players toeing the line on the Suspension Tightrope. It’s as you were at the summit, with Neil Taylor, Phil Bardsley, Cesc Fabregas, Ciaran Clark and Sebastian Larsson teetering just one booking away from a two-match suspension.

By virtue of Gabriel Agbonlahor’s caution in Aston Villa’s Fa Cup win over rivals West Brom, the Villains are now the most represented club in the eight-yellows-or-above bracket – a cause for concern for manager Tim Sherwood, who’s already contending with a raft of injuries and suspensions.

Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo picked up his fourth caution in seven starts against Newcastle, moving up to the eight-yellow mark. The Red Devils can ill afford to lose another member of their rearguard in the wake of Jonny Evans’ suspension, so the Argentine will have to stay out of trouble for four Gameweeks before the slate is wiped clean on 14 April.

In terms of newly-suspended players, Jack Grealish misses Villa’s Gameweek 29 encounter against Sunderland after he picked up two quick yellows as a late substitute against West Brom. Meanwhile, Baggies midfielder Claudio Yacob committed two bookable offences in the same match but was handed a two-game suspension due to it being his second red card of the season – the 27-year-old was sent off for a dangerous challenge on Diego Costa at Stamford Bridge.

Angel Di Maria earned a red card at a particularly inopportune moment, just before Manchester United embark on an unforgiving fun of fixtures (TOT, liv, AVL, MCI, che) that could define their fight for a Champions League berth. The Argentine winger will sit out United’s home tie against Tottenham on Saturday following the ignominy of being booked for simulation and aggressive behaviour towards referee Michael Oliver in the space of 20 seconds.

Jonny Evans began his six-match ban after being charged with spitting at Newcastle’s Papiss Cisse. United’s FA Cup exit against Arsenal on Monday means Evans will now be unavailable until the Gameweek 34 encounter with Everton. For his part in the incident, Cisse received a seven-match ban, with the additional penalty a product of receiving red for elbowing Everton’s Seamus Coleman in December. The Toon frontman will be back in contention for West Brom’s visit to St James’ Park in Gameweek 36.

Joey Barton serves the last of a three-match ban as QPR roll up to Palace this Saturday, whilst Alan Hutton sits out the second of a two-match suspension as Villa make their way to Sunderland.

Elsewhere, Gareth Barry and Lee Cattermole start the first of their two-match suspensions after topping off the Tightrope and Palace’s Mile Jedinak sits out the second of a four-match ban for violent conduct. Sunderland winger Adam Johnson remains suspended by the club pending the outcome of police investigations relating to off-field matters.

Amongst those returning players, Glenn Murray, Nemanja Matic, Jack Colback and Morgan Amalfitano are all back in contention for Gameweek 29, having served their time. Matic twisted his knee celebrating the Blues’ Capital One Cup triumph but recovered in time to face Paris Saint-German in the Champions League last 16 this evening.

    dear fellow players,

due to a lack of Sanchez in my team, I have anxieties about the coming GWs

    this GW, my dilemma is:

    A) Ozil -> Sanchez
    B) Eriksen -> Sanchez
    C) Save FT and bide time and assess the situation

I meant in regular time, after they had scored the 1-0. They still had two subs left at that point and only brought on Zouma for Matic.

Willian for Oscar at HT, Drogba for Ramires at 1-1, and ZOuma for an injured Matic?

Willian for Oscar at the start of the second half. Zouma for Matic a few mins after they went 1-0 up and then Drogba came on at the start of ET.

Normally, you'd expect Mourinho to bring on a player like Luis for the likes of Fabregas or Ramires when 1-0 up.

They've arguably never been weaker in the last 5 years.

Our top four must have been stronger than the rest of Europe in 2006-2009, when we had 3 semi-finalists in the Champions League for 3 years in a row (although only one of them went on to win the final).

Many of the teams in the Champions League these days are not national champions, and it has become increasingly difficult to win both the Premier League and the Champions League in the same season. So, even though Chelsea are currently the best English team, they will not necessarily be the next English team to win the Champions League.

Liverpool's earlier European successes occurred when they were the dominant team in European football, but their most recent one happened in a season when they couldn't even finish in the Premier League top four. So I wouldn't write off the chances of some other English team winning the Champions League one year.

      1. Klopp's Kids
        • 10 Years

Fair point but in terms of ability I think Chelsea are the only premier league team in the worldclass category. Depends who the top 4 teams sign this summer too.

Chelsea have the infrastructure, manager, owner and players to remain one of the elite clubs for a few more seasons, and they also have the advantage that they started making their big investments before the FFP rules came in, but I wouldn't rule out the possibility that another English Club such as Man City, Man United or Arsenal might also join or re-join the elite, though not necessarily under their current managers.

Liverpool probably don't have quite the same financial backing as the others these days, but they have one of the best managers in the Premier League and are still capable of an occasional outstanding season. Spurs probably shouldn't be discounted either.

Yeah? Do you know how many Turks were killed in Germany on the night Germany won the World Cup in 1990?

Two died in Cologne alone, having been pushed under an oncoming bus by celebrating fans.

Doesn't speak for all of them. Many football fans have done poor things. It's like generalizing saying all Chelsea fans are racists.

Messi best ever but was Ronaldo not playing better last year for a bit at least? Don't watch much la liga to be honest

his champions league goal record was pretty insane, arguably deserved a ballon d'or on that alone

I think Ronaldo has the edge on pace and strength, in the air/headers and set pieces such as free kicks etc. Messi is better at dribbling of course taking in and rounding defenders, picking out the beautiful through ball/pass and finishing when one on one. Just my thoughts it's very hard to compare them though they are different in many ways

My H2H opponent is inactive (probably onl 9 or 10 players), so should I take a 4pt hit? The choices are Defoe -> Berahino or Hutton -> Naughton.

Also, I'm torn between Ozil or Silva to replace Di Maria. Whoever it is, I'm just ecstatic that ADM is finally out.

1 week punt on siggy 2gw ago. unannounced injury, then comes back and plays and scores a few days later. getting gibbs when he couldnt get a game then selling the second he got back in and did great. selling for baines who got an unannounced injury before the game too.

Ok fair enough. Good that you didn't mention Gayle. Yeah the gibbs thing was unlucky, as were siggy and baines. Couldn't have known

gayle so cheap im not too bothered, however annoying suddenly being 5th choice striker the one week he was needed was. benched points then when starters dont actualy play i have no subs. could write 3000 words but rather just hang in there till the luck turns

Chances of Jones starting this weekend vs Spurs?

Tempted to blow a -4 on Jones > Ivanovic fr the DGW set-up ... and he's about 50% chance of a CS this week, Jones about 25% if he even plays.
