PlayON Picks – Gameweek 29

Our Friday lunchtime analysis of the PlayON Player Price List arrives once again. As always, we offer a couple of picks per position: one essential weekend target and a left-field alternative for your consideration.

PlayON have extended their deadline for submitting teams so you can now tinker with your starting XI right up until the first kick-off each week – tomorrow that’s 12.45pm, when Crystal Palace welcome QPR to Selhurst Park.

Goalkeepers – Costel Pantilimon
With uncertainty surrounding the Sunderland defence, we’ve opted for the security of starts offered by the big Romanian. Despite registering a single shut-out in four, the 7.3m-priced Pantilimon has still produced 1200+ points in each of his appearances over that period due to his propensity for delivering save points – owned by 9% of PlayON managers, he now plays host to an Aston Villa side that has failed to score in their last six road trips. Our essential goalkeeper is Ben Foster at home to Stoke. The Baggies kept three consecutive clean sheets before the 2-1 away loss against Villa and despite the defeat, Foster still scored 950 points with five saves in that match. Available for 6.5m, he is currently the most popular keeper for the Gameweek, with 14% ownership in PlayON.

Defenders – Jeffrey Schlupp
Leicester’s out-of-position defender gets the nod for the home encounter with Hull. Schlupp’s berth on the left of Nigel Pearson’s midfield has already served up four goals in all competitions this term and with the Tigers netting once in their last four road trips, he looks a solid option for points at both ends of the pitch. Owned by 7% of PlayON managers, the Ghana international sets you back just 6.7m. We also opt for Scott Dann (7.1m.) as Palace entertain QPR at Selhurst Park. The centre-half recently scored his second of the season and has benefitted from Alan Pardew’s focus on set-pieces – Dann has registered more touches inside the box than any defender since the new manager took charge. Add to that his 45 clearances in six matches (worth 25 points each in PlayON) and the 12%-owned Dann could be in the points against an R’s attack that have already failed to score against their weekend opponents earlier in the season.

Midfielders -Jason Puncheon
The 8.5m-priced midfielder has been playing more centrally recently for Alan Pardew’s side and is capable of impressive scores, as demonstrated in the 3-1 win at West Ham, in which he assisted all three goals. At home to a QPR side that have conceded at least twice goals in 11 of their 13 road trips, the 34%-owned Puncheon could be instrumental again for the Eagles. Our essential midfielder is David Silva, as City make their way to Burnley. Coming in at 13.1m this week, he’s racked up four goals and a pair of assists in the last six Gameweeks, averaging almost 1900 points per appearance over that period. Up against a defence with a single shut-out in 17 league outings, his relentless form looks likely to continue – it’s no surprise to see he currently sits in over 49% of PlayON sides heading into the weekend.

Forwards – Saido Berahino
The West Brom frontman bagged his twelfth strike of the season in the 2-1 loss to Aston Villa last time out and is expected to shrug off a knock in time to face Stoke tomorrow afternoon. Available for just 8.9m and owned by 9% of Fantasy managers, Berahino welcomes the Potters to the Hawthorns in excellent form – he’s scored in three of the last four now and has fired 11 shots on target (worth 200 points in the PlayON scoring matrix) in his last nine matches. With Silva on board in midfield, we’ve decided to overlook Sergio Aguero as our essential striker and instead turn to Wayne Rooney (13.7m) after his goal against Arsenal in the FA Cup. Having netted four times in the last five matches in all competitions, the 15%-owned Man United skipper seems to be in the midst of one of his scoring streaks ahead of the visit of a Spurs defence with a single clean sheet in nine. Rooney has scored nine of his ten league goals this season at Old Trafford and will be desperate for a response after Monday’s disappointing cup exit to Arsenal.

All my rivals have Silva. My midfield is:

    Sanchez - Cazorla - Hazard - Eriksen - Walters

    Should I do:

    A) Cazorla -> Silva?
    B) Someone else to Silva?
    C) Cazorla to someone else... Nasri??

I won my twentieth gameweek in my head to head league last week and thereby cannot be caught. Thankfully the new cups and LMS league should keep things interesting for at least 1 more week (assuming I qualified for the cups)

    Bottomed and useful!

Clean sheet market on an exchange:

    Chelsea 2.12
    Arsenal 2.22
    Man City 2.36
    Crystal Palace 2.44
    Sunderland 2.52
    Everton 2.58
    West Brom 2.6
    Leicester 2.62
    Liverpool 2.76
    Man Utd 3.0
    Aston Villa 3.3
    Stoke 3.4
    Hull 3.85
    Swansea 4.6
    QPR - 5.1
    Newcastle 5.3
    Southampton 5.7
    Tottenham 5.7
    Burnley 9.2
    West Ham 9.2

From a betting perspective, Newcastle and Liverpool look reasonable value to me.

From a fantasy league perspective, I really hope PVA starts.

The first 4 teams have good fixtures.

If it just takes fixture into account, then no issue. But the way their defense play, I dont think City, Palace, Villa, Sunderland or Leicester are good enough to keep clean sheet.

    Panti
    Fonte Bertrand Bellerin PvA Baird
    Hazard Sanchez Silva Eriksen Cazorla
    Aguero Kane Austin

    Some moves I've thought about:
    A) Cazorla, Fonte > Cork, Ivanovic (2m itb for Austin > Gru)
    B) Cazorla, Baird > Cork, Ivanovic
    C) Cazorla, Austin > Ozil, Berahino

    from the bottom of p2

    Foster
    Zouma Bellerin PVA
    Hazard Sanchez Sterling Silva
    Aguero Austin Giroud

    Myhill Dawson Bertrand Boyd

Doing well considering no Kane but my mini league rival is closing the gap.
I was going to save the transfer but Sterling's recent positioning and fixtures is giving concern.
Take Sterling out for Puncheon? Or maybe Siggy?

You need to get Kane in for this superb run of fixtures.

However if you would rather not - then do Sterling to Punchon (if you're only concerned about the one gameweek) or Siggy (if you want someone who has a good run coming up).

Agree with this. If he scores big, you are still doing well due to low ownership. Loved having Walters for his hatrick the other week, but never in a million years did I consider captaining him. Giroud, Silva or Sanchez valid punts for me, otherwise safe with Aguero

Hmm - seems pretty overwhelmingly in favour of Aguero. Sensible points too. Guess I'll go with him.

VC Puncheon though, so here's hoping Aguero's rested (highly unlikely given the need for Man City to keep scoring and improving their goal diff if they hope to catch Chelsea).

  21. Gameweek 29: Captaincy
    Dr. Agabuse
    • 11 Years
    9 years, 1 month ago

Lets have a serious captaincy debate:

Here are the 4 realistic choices:

    Kane:
+ the in-form striker: scoring 4 doubleDigits in his last six games. Scored two in his last game
+ the away-day-asset: scoring 3 double digits in his last three. Scored less than 7 points away from home against chelsea on december, 3, scoring an incredible 64points in 6 away games from then on.
+ no Europe around the corner. Nailed on for 90mins
+ on penalties if Townsend loses his place to dembele or lamela.
+ not tired. Had no Europe this week either

    - playing manU who will want to tighten up after a humiliating loss in the faCup and who will have +50%-60% of the posession
    - only real threat from Spurs. ManU defenders will be after him and him only.

    Sánchez:
+getting better after injury. Scoring vs QPR and only denied by an incredible DeGeaSave in the last minute vs manu.
+playing West ham at home, who are losing Form and players (tomkins) - 60%+ posession arsenal
+not tired. No Europe last week
    +on some freekicks+corners
+gamechanger. Goes on his own. Takes on a lot of players on. Takes a lot of risk, to get a shot away. Will have a lot of balls at his feet

-CL around the corner. Might only play 70mins
    -no penalties.

    Aguero:
    +on penalties
    +playing burnley
+not tired (no Europe this week)
+he's aguero. Filled with the most potential in General. The guy that doesn't need to go mental to score a hatty

    - CL around the corner (60mins if they win)
    - playing away from home
    - Bad stats last game with Silva and Bony running the show vs LEI

    Hazard:
+ no CL around the corner (might get his usual 90mins yet again)
    + on penalties
+ best creating player in the league
+playing at home (60%+ posession Chelsea)
+ needs to satisfy sad Chelsea supporters

    - tired after 120mins vs PsG
    - playing solid Soton with possibly Alderweireld back. Wanyama Schneiderlin and on his side superfast Clyne, who is attacking AS well and Mourinhos knows that (defensive duty)
    - playing in a system that doesnt allow him to go on his own as f.e Sánchez does when things get stuck or close towards the end.

So the stats suggest Harry Kane in every way. He has the chances, the goals, just not the fixture, which might be significant.
In close captaincy choice GWs like this, i advice to imagine a possible result and look at the goal involvement + minutes
If you think Spurs will score one, Chelsea two, ManC 3 and Arsenal 3-4 like i do, Aguero seems the right choice with his overall 60% goal involvement. If you think City wont score more than 2 while he is still on the pitch Sánchez 50% involvement over the seasons (and in the last game) should possibly sway you.
If you think Spurs will snatch two, crazyAwayKane really needs to be the man with those 90mins. Hazard has a mere 25% involvement overall so he's not for me this week.
    Thanks for reading 😉

I think the week and half rest means that aguero will see decent amount of minutes. Can't see him being withdrawn on 55mins like he was last time against newcastle. Saying that I doubt he'll get 90 either.

      As I posted last night...

It seems that for most on here the favoured captain options this weekend are Aguero or Sanchez. People are saying that other choices are risky. Well I guess they must have a different idea of risk to me.

Aguero's game was decimated last weekend by Bony's first start. Bony played as central striker with Aguero deeper and wide. Most of Aguero's usual chances went to Bony and Aguero was starved.

This is confirmed by the BPS. Aguero gathered 5 baseline points, one of his lowest totals of the season. When he has scored big hauls he has usually amassed 40-60 baseline BPS. This makes him a very risky captain choice until he and Bony learn to play together (unless Bony is rested which seems unlikely). In addition, Aguero may only play 60-70 minutes with a vital CL game coming up in midweek.

Sanchez has scored 1 PL goal in the last 2 months (5 starts). His output has (predictably) suffered with the return of Giroud and Ozil to the Arsenal team and the goals/assists being more spread around. He is no longer the main man at the Emirates - a very good player no doubt but not the outstanding FPL option he was from October to December.

Sanchez is still capable of a haul but like Aguero he has a big CL game midweek and may not play 90. Overall, captaining him is very risky right now.

What makes people see Aguero and Sanchez as 'safe' options is (a) popularity, and (b) historic production. But neither of those make for a good captain option if current circumstances are ignored. They may feel safer but in actual fact the feeling of safety is a mirage in both cases.

Puncheon, Kramaric, Giroud, Silva, Hazard, Lukaku, and Rooney are all probably better captain options this weekend. Personally I will captain Rooney (who has an excellent record against Spurs and is playing up front again, at last) but if I didn't have him I'd go for Silva or Giroud without question.

Kane is probably captainable too but not one I'd fancy away to United. There have to be better choices than that.

Kun didn't play out wide. If you look at the map he also was further forward than Bony but it's true that he didn't get a lot of chances

I wish I had the gumption to captain Puncheon. Alas I'm too boring.

Top pick for me this week is Sturridge, he's got form, fixture and should start.

I'm probably going for Aguero though, but as a dullard it would be remiss of me not to.

I'm not keen on Sanchez either this week - he's still on borrowed time currently with Ozil ready and waiting to fill his boots.

Yep, I included Sturridge in my list in the original post but he somehow got deleted when I was copy pasting.

I think Puncheon is a very good shout. Take a "risk" for once (if you want to call it that). Don't you want to win?

Some of those later suggestions look good, but Kramarić has only played 90 minutes twice, and scored once in the PL, and captaining Silva over Agüero is points chasing.

Anything can happen over one week, but they are certainly risky choices.

"...captaining Silva over Agüero is points chasing..."

          Not something I do.

I captained Aguero last week, it's not that I have anything against him. I also watched the game on TV. He played deeper, drifted wide, didn't get many opportunities. Until I see him play more successfully with Bony he's not a captain option for me.

Silva, on the other hand, gets very involved whether starting wider or more centrally. I think he's a better option right now.

          1. Carlos Kickaball
            • 9 Years
            9 years, 1 month ago

You might not think so, but I think the points are clouding your judgement here, and if it's not the points it's something.

A bit soon to be saying Agüero won't score well with Bony in the side, Bony has always been a player to go back and get involved in the play, and Agüero has almost always played with a strike partner at City while Pellegrini has been manager.

If anything is a bit soon, it's a bit soon to assume Silva is a decent pick at all at over 9.5m when he has two strikers playing ahead of him, as for the last 18 months he's really not thrived in FPL terms in that system and the haul against Newcastle was a pretty unusual event.

At PaddyPower right now Silva is 9/4 to score anytime, Agüero is 8/11, the bookies and punters sometimes get it wrong, but not by that much.

            1. Ruth_NZ

Well, you are a City fan so you maybe know more than me. I know Aguero can play successfully with Dzeko. Bony is a different player. I would want to see Aguero play well with Bony in the team before I'd be prepared to captain him again. Silva, on the other hand, I have no doubts about.

It's not an issue for me anyway because Rooney will be my captain.

Rooney's a good shout now he's playing upfront. I think some have forgotten how good he is, due to LVG putting him in midfield for a while. It wasn't that long ago that he was the template captain in week one.

That's true. But Kane kind of is more of a focal point for defenders than the others who have Ozil Giroud Santi, Silva Nasri or Navas Bony or Costa Oscar Willian to be very warry of. Not that that hinderd Kane before.. He's used to be a lone striker these days and still scores a ton

If these are the 4 realistic choices, I am going for an unrealistic choice.

Great post. For Sanchez there are a few more negatives. Form not great, they do not rely on him as much recently as they have done earlier in the season. Likely to play out wide.

For Aguero playing away from home isn't really a negative as he scores a lot away.

I think Aguero is the obvious choice but I'll be taking a punt instead.

      Good luck

Very logical thinking in that last paragraph. This is a great way to assess.

I don't know why everyone is convinced Arsenal will smash West Ham. I reckon 1-1.

I also reckon Spurs Man utd Will finish 3-3.

I think Giroud is equally a strong captaincy shout. He leads the line of the Arsenal attack whereas Sanchez is on the wing. I don't see how Sanchez should be considered a superior option. They are perhaps equal however.

Sanchez is a punt. He hasn't shown enough form to warrant it either. I for one don't own him and really don't fear him hurting me. My only other consideration this week was Hazard. But what with the question marks over fatigue and how Chelsea will react it surely has to be between Kane and Aguero. And in this instance, fixtures considered, it has to be Aguero. Any other choice is just asking for trouble.

Moreno if you can afford to bench him for the following two. Depends what you need really.

@ Irish Madridista. cheers for the reply
my stance is based on prudence and avoiding the risk of regret. having 2 free transfers opens up your options so much that you can save yourself from some -4s.
i don't doubt ozil's capabilities nor overestimate sanchez's, i simply wud only make that transfer if i had a good feeling that ozil wud outscore him THIS week. this week is the only one that matters because the same transfer will be available next week, along with that extra wiggle-room

You speak the truth, I can't argue with that logic 🙂

I guess I rush into transfers sometimes as I like to know I'm earning value on the in-form players and not losing value on out-of-form players, not that that really comes into it at all in this situation.

I guess I would fancy Ozil to outscore Sanchez this week personally, that's why I would advocate the transfer, but it's no doubt risky!

i guess i'm speaking from experience, both mine and others'. been playing for like 8 or 9 seasons and the biggest cause of regret is usually selling a good player in a good team for a good fixture. there's just so much room for everything to go to pot

Not sure whether to start PVA and risk him coming on for a 10 min cameo or start Lescott?

Do you reckon he's going to play then? Or just think Lescott is going to concede so its irrelevant?

He's a f@cking scumbag. Single handedly nearly destroyed Real Madrid's image from the inside out in his last season, coercing players to act even dirtier than they already were (Arbeloa, Pepe, Khedira, Coentrao, etc)

I feel tempted to bring in Puncheon for Boyd. Play him ahead of Walters who would be benched this would improve my side this week and GW 33 in particular. But it is for a hit

Walters -> Puncheon. More efficient use of funds.

Thanks. It was my first thought too. But this way in GW 33 I also get Walters at home to Southampton. Which is an OK fixture. Certainly better than Boyd away at Everton
