The Digest – Gameweek 30

Our final look at the pertinent topics from Gameweek 30 sees us assess United’s resurgent Spaniard, Palace’s ascent under Alan Pardew and the relentless armband consistency of Tottenham’s new talisman.

The Player

Whilst Steven Gerrard did his best to hog the back pages with a 38-second dismissal, there’s no denying Juan Mata was the headline act in Sunday’s Anfield showdown. The Spaniard’s class and subsequent two-goal haul proved the difference as the visitors ended Liverpool’s 13-match unbeaten run with a dominant win, described by Louis van Gaal as “one of the most important moments in my career”.

Having failed to start any of United’s six matches between Gameweeks 23-28, Mata looked confined to a bit-part role but a suspension to Angel Di Maria has afforded him the chance to finally nail down a regular spot under the Dutchman. His involvement has helped the Old Trafford outfit to vital back-to-back wins over Champions League rivals Spurs and Liverpool and Van Gaal’s post-match praise of his role on the United right certainly bodes well for future pitch time, leaving Di Maria likely to occupy the opposite flank ahead of Ashley Young.

Impressively – given that he’s started just 19 of his side’s first 30 fixtures – Mata’s Anfield double takes his tally to seven for the season. That’s more than twice Di Maria’s three strikes and a total superior to all but one of his previous three campaigns in the top flight.

With the chase for a top-four spot intensifying, Mata looks to have rediscovered the level of displays that served up 162 and 212 points in his two seasons at Stamford Bridge. Van Gaal’s side don’t have it easy, though – showdowns with City and Chelsea in the next three will perhaps ensure the playmaker stays off our radars for now, though United, and Mata, have offered strong recent evidence to suggest that they have the form to prevail.

The Team

A 2-1 win at the Britannia elevated Palace into eleventh spot and continued their remarkable ascent under Alan Pardew. The Eagles have now served up six victories and a draw in ten outings since the new man took charge – harvesting a total of 19 points in comparison to the 17 points accrued in their first 20 fixtures.

With the emphasis on attack, Pardew’s decision to shift Jason Puncheon to the middle has allowed him to deploy Yannick Bolasie and Wilfried Zaha on the flanks and all three have prospered in recent weeks – Zaha has now struck in back-to-back matches, whilst the former two have three assists apiece over the last four.

Pardew’s decision to call upon Glenn Murray up front has also proved inspired. Handed just 16 minutes by Neil Warnock and farmed out on loan, Murray’s barged his way to the front of the pecking order in the new regime, with four goals, an assist and five bonus points in the last four.

It’s testament to Pardew’s approach that, since his arrival, only champions City have fired more shots inside the box than the Selhurst Park side. Whilst a lack of a double Gameweek may deter would-be investors, a schedule that pits them against Sunderland, West Brom and Hull in the next four should ensure their short-term prospects remain solid before the fixtures turns nasty in Gameweek 35.

The Talking Point

A three-goal haul against Leicester took Harry Kane to joint second in the overall Fantasy Premier League (FPL) standings and places the Tottenham youngster 16 points ahead of any other forward.

Given that Kane failed to start a single league match until Gameweek 11, his rise as a Fantasy force is all the more remarkable. Serving up 18 goals and five assists in 20 first XI appearances, he’s proven a fixture-proof option, too, delivering 18, 12 and 11-point hauls against Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal since the turn of the year. Putting his form into perspective, Kane has outscored Sergio Aguero by 14 goals to three in this calendar year so far with a series of displays that have persuaded almost 50% of FPL managers to snap up his services.

Even though we have three confirmed double Gameweeks on the upcoming schedule left to play, the issue now is – do we dare to look beyond Kane as a captaincy option? In his last 13 appearances, the 6.4-priced striker has produced seven lots of double figures and has blanked just four times over that run. Whilst Villa and QPR brace themselves for a double Gameweek 31, Kane prepares to square up to a Burnley side with the second worst defensive record in the top flight. Such is his form, there’d be no real surprise if he outscored the likes of Charlie Austin and Christian Benteke – indeed, it’s a sign of his stock that he’s currently neck-and-neck with Austin in this week’s Captain Poll, with 26% of the votes cast apiece.

Looking at Kane’s schedule, there’s arguably just one fixture that could pose problems – in Gameweek 34 away to a Southampton side with ten clean sheets in 16 outings at St Mary’s. Handily, Chelsea already have a double that week, giving us a rare chance to consider alternatives to the Tottenham man.

Even in Gameweek 37, when Arsenal are poised for a double, Kane threatens to cast a shadow over our armband intentions. Given that the Gunners travel to Old Trafford first of all, they could be solely reliant on a home clash against Sunderland to bring in the points. Kane, meanwhile, hosts Hull in the same round of fixtures and, as we’ve seen many times already, is more than capable of destroying any other rival as a reliable captaincy contender.

Not these days. McCullum and the Blackcaps have captivated a nation for more than a year now. McCullum has stood up agains Corruption in the sport, even against former 'hero's' of NZ cricket. His aggressive fearless brand of cricket, his incredible batting ability his humility and Mana all come together, he is a true hero of NZ sport.

Its been a total transformation in the last couple of years. Both in performance, style and how the players conduct themselves with honour and integrity. I've never seen the country so in love with this cricket team, its astounding, and it goes far beyond performances, BMac and the boys are inspirational.

Builds his teams attack, even from alongside the centre backs, good link-up play with other mids and forwards, short range and long range passing , creates chances and scores goals.

Fabregas. He's about the break the assist record for the premier league era in his first season back. And this is after playing most games in a deeper midfield role.

Yes he's dropped off since the turn of the year, but that's only normal when a player comes into the league from another league that has a winter break. If Mourinho pushes him up to the number 9 role next season (where he belongs), he's going to wreck havoc on the league.

    Fabianski, Myhill,
    Pieters, Clyne, PVA, Naughton, Rose,
    Eriksen, Hazard, Silva, Sanchez, Boyd,
    Giroud, Kane, Aguero

    0.7m, 2ft's, WC available.

    1. Ivanovic- Pieters
    Ramsey- Sanchez

    2. Terry- Pieters
    Costa- Aguero

Thinking either of these moves are good.

    B) Bellerin, Santi & Ayoze -> Hutton, Siggy & Austin (4 points)

    D) Sanchez & Ayoze -> Siggy & Benteke/Austin

      Disagree.

Once you're inside the top 10k (especially top 3k), you need to find the right differentials, to go along with some studs that are undoubtedly owned by many. Stick too much to the template will make it hard for you to climb the ladder.

i would say finding the right differentials is a matter of luck and skill..and also about patience and not being kneejerky.

some people constantly get the correct differentials..it requires planning..like getting them for the right fixture or keeping a FT in hand

also might be the reason why u pay for the membership to determine which differentials are safe to punt on and which are not!

haha not really. i was 2k like at gw23 and it only takes u a punty WC to destroy your rank (just out of 10k now)..and refusal to go with the obvious options.

of cos if u are playing the safe approach and always going for the safe captain u are unlikely to drop out of it.

I WCed in GW23 and had one of the best GWs of decade-old FPL life. Yep too punty may destroy you but you need to mix safety approach with a lil bit of maverick.

yeah was rather too impatient as i hope to go back to 1k asap so started to go for walcott oscar gayle etc.

Walcott will always be a good pick considering his history in FPL, but then it's a case of being "too early". And now we have this issue about him not starting games too.

Unlucky about Oscar. Gayle is a classic case of knee-jerk. Better luck next time buddy

Bellerin/Rose to Alder/Naughton will do the trick. Austin to Costa is also decent but you can use that spot for taking punts. I have Sakho, will probably get Murray/Ings after 2-weeks.
Switching to 4-3-3 is also an option which should give strong side plus easy to get Costa.

as for costa your point is interesting.

to get him i need to downgrade a mid right now..if aguero blanks again i might lose patience and take him out for costa..then use the austin spot to get a punty 3rd striker.

I don't see the appeal with him, could be a one game wonder like with many other players this season, namely Elia, Tadic, Eto'o etc.

          Very kneejerky move

You seem pretty keen on him, so go for it if that's the case.

See my reply below, cut your losses, bring in Silva, and look for better differentials elsewhere

I feel like its too late though, look at his ownership. I would be better of without him. My team has to many template players which is keeping me at a steady rank (Not increasing or decreasing) If I want to finish in the top 10k It would be better to take a punt, right? Especially since I have my WC which I will activate very soon..

I understand where you are coming from, however I look at it differently.

Instead of ignoring him, just cut your losses and bring him in. He has shown that he is a consistent option wherever he plays, and the past few weeks have proved that. City have good fixtures and he will continue to score good points, and against West Brom he could've had a brace or even possibly a hat-trick. Players like these you cannot just ignore and go for a differential. The differential (whoever it is) might score well but you need him to outscore Silva to be effective, and I don't see many mid-priced differentials outscoring Silva in the short term.

Basically, I'd cut your losses, get Silva and look for differentials elsewhere (e.g. double ups in defence, Benteke, Siggy, Mane etc).

The way I see it is,

My team has been VERY template since GW 19. I have been ranked 16k-20k since then. Crazy right? Almost 1/3 of the season and I cannot get above or below that rank. Now after not doing Kane (C) I have dropped to 27k. If I get Silva I believe I will be stuck around that rank, which is something I don't want. He only has the potential to give me a small green arrow. A player like Mata has a chance of giving me a big green arrow (Or a red one) and at this stage of the season, I think I may take my chances.

Again, my same point above stands.

You are thinking very narrow minded, as though that midfield position is the difference between and green and red arrow. It's certainly not.

As I said above, look for differentials in 'less risky' areas, particularly in defence. Maybe look at bringing in a Liverpool defender, or double up on Chelsea, or possibly Benteke.

These are all 'differentials' that I consider less risky than going for Mata over Silva, but at the same time could reward you well.

Meh... Your probably right. To be fair I do already have a decent amount of differentials (Mane, Double Chelsea, Austin) Guess I should just play it safe and get Silva. Would still have another FT to use though 😯

but not going to get him..i dont like spending so much budget on a defender when u have only 100m and u do not know who are the budget players yet.

would again go for a rotating defense with good fixtures..unless chelsea has golden fixtures at the start i would re-consider.

Hmm interesting point. I won't make the same mistake in not getting him at the start of a season, every season he starts amazingly with attacking returns.

Could always swap him out for a chepaer defender when he eventually cools down

I too rarely spend money on an expensive defender at the start but I may do next year.

Until a few weeks ago (haven't checked since) he was averaging 5.2 PPG which isn't bad for someone only costing 7.5m.

I may go the route of 1 expensive defender, 3 expensive mids, 2 expensive forwards and cheap out for the rest so I have different areas I can downgrade in if needed. But to be honest it's far too early to be thinking about any of that! 🙂

yeah. its not only about ivan..its about the whole team.

will wait to see what type of team i can get with ivan and without him..then try to play around to see if i can fit him by dropping another heavy hitter etc.

this season i started with a 22.5m defence

its pretty solid, without making a single transfer until gw8 (chester for baines)..i can afford to wait until gw13 to sell ferdinand->yun

Not getting Giroud (went Ozil 2 weeks back) and punting on Mane(c) has left me stranded. Third in mini league and within catching distance of second but first is fast disappearing out of sight.

What options here? I know the priority should be to fix defence and get it one or both of Bellerin and Cameron. But seriously thinking Ozil to Mata. Worth it or mad?

In the ground an hour beforehand is plenty. Nothing much happens until the teams come out to warm up and that's usually around 30-40 mins before the kickoff.

    Aguero Giroud Kane

    Foster Boyd Pva Haidara

Could this be a good time to get rid of Giroud? He has got LIV, bur, blank, CHE in his next four games. And a replacement like Benteke this week and Costa after that could easily outscore him over these 4 games.

To go up in the ranks it's important to get on and off a bandwagon at the right time before everyone else. So is this the right time to get off the bandwagon..

It's an interesting question with the double coming up.

As a non-owner I'm a little worried about not owning Giroud right now, and I'd want him for Burnley. Problem is if you keep him until then is it worth using 2 transfers to get rid for the blank and then back in?

You could just bench him for that week but it's a lot of money / a decent slot in your team not being used.

      Tough one.

      1. Sunny 😎
        • 11 Years
        9 years, 1 month ago

As a non-owner I think the time to get Giroud has passed. With a dgw this week and a blank soon for Arsenal, I feel he is not worth using 2 FTs on unless you want to bench him for the blank. Gw35 would be a good time to get him back in imo

    2. Ludo
      • 10 Years
      9 years, 1 month ago

With Skrtel likely suspended, LIV/bur is a pretty great couple of fixtures for Giroud. Would you rather have Benteke for QPR/mun/tot? It could be a spectacular move, but I think GW33 would bet the time to jump off the bandwagon.

      1. Sunny 😎
        • 11 Years
        9 years, 1 month ago

I would prefer Benteke for QPR/mun and then Costa for qpr. And if we are to jump off the bandwagon befor gw33 then why not now.

Liverpool still won't concede bucket loads even without Skrtel. They have a good team setup now and have settled into a good rhythm, don't think not having one player will have that much impact. And Burnley fighting for their lives aren't easy now as we saw with City

Arsenal will beat Liverpool and Giroud is likely to score
Arsenal will thrash Burnley and Giroud is likely to be amongst that too

Giroud is currently in red hot form, it would be crazy to sell him right now.

      1. Sunny 😎
        • 11 Years
        9 years, 1 month ago

You can't see the future can you Ryan. As I said above, Liverpool won't be a walkover like everyone think just because Skrtel is out. Sakho was out and Lovren managed to do okay during that time. Now Sakho is back and with the shape Liverpool have right now, they shouldn't be written off so easily.

As for Burnley, they are fighting for their lives right now and teams like these are the toughest to play against at this time of the season. They will have their home crowd behind them and they can get a result as we saw against City

Mad to drop Giroud right now.

Costa can wait. I can see him getting some rest from Mour due to his injury record and potential suspension. Come DGW34 he will be a must, but then I still it's too early to drop Giroud Kane or even Kun for him.

    Raheem Sterling Injury

Raheem Sterling is due to pull out of England's upcoming friendly with Italy after suffering a toe injury.

"Raheem Sterling will be allowed to go back to Liverpool after England's Euro 2016 qualifier with Lithuania on Friday.

England boss Roy Hodgson is understood to have agreed to let Sterling miss the friendly in Italy next Tuesday to avoid potential burnout fears.

Hodgson confirmed he will have to leave some players at home, with Sterling certain to miss out on Italy because of a toe injury."
