Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 30

Nemanja Matic became the seventh player to tiptoe onto the Suspension Tightrope this weekend, joining Cesc Fabregas, Ciaran ClarkPhil BardsleySebastian Larsson, Victor Wanyama and Neil Taylor on nine yellow cards – just one misstep away from a two-match suspension.

With Chelsea’s midfield linchpins unable to mistime a single challenge in their next two league ties (STO, qpr), the Blues’ ability to contest in the centre of the park – particularly against a physical Potters outfit – could be diminished. In the worst case scenario, a yellow for either player in the next two Gameweeks – before the limit is extended to 15 bookings – would rule them out of crucial encounters against Manchester United and Arsenal in Gameweek 33 and 34 respectively.

In terms of newly-suspended players, Steven Gerrard received a red card for stamping on Red Devils midfielder Ander Herrera just 38 seconds after entering the fray. The Liverpool skipper misses league matches against Arsenal and Newcastle United, as well as the Reds’ FA Cup replay against Blackburn Rovers.

The FA have taken retrospective action and charged Martin Skrtel with violent conduct for his apparent stamp on United goalkeeper David De Gea in the 95th minute of Sunday’s encounter. The Slovakian centre-back has until 6pm this evening to appeal and, if found guilty, will join Gerrard on the sidelines for Liverpool’s match-ups with Arsenal, Newcastle and Blackburn.

Craig Dawson will serve out a one-match suspension after the FA cleared Gareth McAuley of his wrongful dismissal at the Etihad and transferred the ban over to his fellow defender, who had denied Wilfried Bony a goalscoring opportunity in the penalty area.

Mile Jedinak sits out the last of his four-match ban in the next round of fixtures, as Crystal Palace entertain Manchester City at Selhurt Park, and will return to contention for a trip to Sunderland. Meanwhile, Tom Huddlestone is unavailable for Hull City’s clash with Swansea City but could be reinstated to face Southampton in Gameweek 32.

Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini faces two more matches (SUN, LIV) on the sidelines before he can take to the field again. Papiss Cisse and Jonny Evans remain long-term absentees after their spitting spat, whilst Chris Brunt, Gareth Barry, Lee Cattermole and Claudio Yacob are available for selection in Gameweek, 31 having completed their respective bans.

      Definitely Ozil to Mata.

Don't like the idea of dumping Sanchez. There is a hat-trick in him before the season is out...

I wouldn't be surprised if Liverpool get a grand spanking of Arse though....maybe stick with 1 arsenal?

Someone commented on the first page that even though expensive players are under performing, they should still be invested in because people have the cash available for them. For a few weeks now I have wondered whether the best team possible doesn't require one to spend all of their budget.

    ...

Right... so I just typed out my comment about five times and gave up. Every time I wrote it I thought of another dynamic that had to be incorporated. However, as a starting point, if one were to choose their players such that every player has the highest expected return (ignoring prices) for their position, then your team is optimal. If this scenario fits within your budget then why should one feel compelled to spend excess?

Of course the complexity magnifies if the best team cannot fit within one's budget. The thing is, the plethora of credible, cheap players that are outperforming expensive players means the simple scenario I mentioned above where the best team can fit within budget, is, in my opinion achievable (given my expectations of player returns).

I believe that people get too hung up on the prices of players and as a starting point we should all try and build the best team possible ignoring price. From there, if one has gone beyond their budget it is then time to optimise.

Which is what Kane captainers thought when WBA went down to 10 men after 2 minutes as well. C'est la vie.

No diggity. Problem i believe is when an expensive player not in your team which you can afford is scoring.

This scenario could be down to probability. Most expensive players have a really high maximum point potential compared to lower priced players, which means their scores are likely to have a larger variance. So even though you may have formulated an expensive player to have a low expected return over the coming weeks, his natural talent just means that large point variances result. In this sense, the more risk seeking you are then the more reason you have to go for expensive players.

I suppose the other scenario is that the expensive player is exceeding your expectations because you have a misinformed expected return of the expensive player haha

Price does get taken into account quite a lot. Kane is a prime example with a reluctance to buy, then play every game and then to captain this season mainly due to his price.

This is probably because people have a general level of trust for the fantasy premier league team to base prices based on underlying stats, performance etc. I.e. the price is low for a reason... Its natural for people to use price as a reference point for quality. Its a heuristic we use. Thing is with heuristics they don't always work!

Agreed and I'd be lying if I said someone who is under performing at a high price will probably usually get longer to prove themselves as a lower price player.

It's definitely something that plays on my mind but I have tried to think differently this season.

To give an example, when you drive to work, you take the A road every time because 9/10 its the quickest route.

Alternatively you could check on the traffic before departing every day, and although you will get the decision right 10/10 times this takes time, and effort.

So people use price as a reference because 9/10 it works. When it doesn't work those who used this rule of thumb lose out. The fantasy managers who put in the time and effort to look beyond the price win!

That's probably why most FPL managers remember Lallana circa 2013 / Siggy circa 2012. Kane obviously this year.

I think that realising that the players prices aren't that important and that you don't need to use all of your funds is one of the first, key things teams need to do to do well in this game.

For players that don't visit this site, the two main ways that you search for transfer targets is by price and by total score. Whereas a lot of us base our target players based on form, fixtures and underlying stats.

I still think that Sanchez is one of the 4 mids with the most potential to score points. Ditto for Aguero and forwards (one of the top 3). So, unless you can utilise the money better elsewhere, I.e. Defence really, then they are still in the optimal team. Plus removing either one (if you have them) costs a transfer.

With the international break commencing, I thought I'd look into which players may be affected by the fixtures coming up. I've included only the highly owned players in the top 10k or players listed in the first team/squad, so only their teams and fixtures are listed. These are the planned international friendlies/fixtures and European Cup qualifiers thus far in the international break.

    Teams (Player)
    Fixture - Date

    Algeria (Bentaleb, Mahrez)
    - Qatar 26/03 - Oman 30/03
Argentina (Aguero, Angel Di Maria, Rojo, Zabaleta)

    - Bahrain 26/03 - Kuwait 30/03
    Denmark (Eriksen)
    - USA 25/3 - Denmark 29/3
England (Kane, Sterling, Rooney, Henderson, Clyne, Baines, Cahill, Hart)
    - Lithuania 27/03 - Italy 31/03
    Ecuador (Montero, E.Valenica)
    - Mexico 29/03 - Argentina 01/04
France (Giroud, Koscielny, Sakho, Zouma, Schneiderlin)
    - Brazil 26/03 - Denmark 29/03
    Germany (Ozil)
    - Australia 25/03 - Georgia 29/03
    Italy (Pelle)
    - Bulgaria 28/03 - England 31/03
    Ivory Coast (Bony, Yaya Toure)
    - Equatorial Guinea 26/03 - Bolivia 29/03
    South Korea (Ki, Yun)
    - Uzbekistan 27/03 - New Zealand 31/03
    Netherlands (Krul, Janmaat, Blind)
    - Turkey 28/03 - Spain 31/03
    Northern Ireland (McAauley, Baird)
    - Scotland 25/03 - Finland 29/03
    Portugal (Fonte)
    - Serbia 03/29 - Cape V. Islands 31/03
    Poland (Fabianski)
    - Republic of Ireland 29/03
Republic of Ireland (Wilson, Coleman, O'Shea, McShane, Clark, Walters)
    - Poland 29/03
Senegal (Mane, Diouf, N' Doye, )
    - Ghana 28/03
    Scotland (McGregor, Hutton, Robertson)
    - N. Ireland 25/03 - Gibraltar 29/03
    Serbia: (Ivanovic, Matic, Tadic, Kolarov)
    - Portugal 29/03 Spain (De Gea, Silva, Cazorla, Costa)
    - Ukraine 27/03 - Netherlands 31/03
Wales (Williams, Collins, N. Taylor, Ramsey)
    - Israel 28/03

In conclusion, I think it goes without saying that saving your transfers until the matches are done with is important. Also, that most European teams listed here have at least one Euro Cup qualifier, players may be more prone to injury in those matches compared to a regular friendly considering what's at stake. So even more caution should be taken IMO, if you're sticking/twisting a European player.

They're lacking quality forwards really, others called up were Immobile and Zaza who were penned to start. The former out of favor and having a disappointing debut season in the Bundesliga, while the latter has been great this season for Sassuolo thus far.

It seems Pelle was called up to the national side earlier in the season when he was all the rage and scored in the ECQ's. Anyway, it seems Pelle may not start given his lacklustre form, and there have been reports that Conte's reverting to his 352 with Zaza and Immobile for the upcoming matches.

      In some ways, yes.

Premium players SHOULD be fixture proof. I'd always play Hazard away at City over a cheaper mid at home to Stoke, for example.

What you've mentioned is merely a rule of thumb. Even premium players are susceptible to huge dips in form. It could be the case that a premium player's form is so bad that one of your benched players offers a better option. You are in denial if you stick with the premium player just because he's premium, unless you're chasing and want a player with a higher point ceiling

            1. Trigg ⭐️
              • 11 Years
              9 years, 1 month ago

But surely due to the nature of the game, keeping a premium player who is in terrible form is a huge mistake in itself?

Carrying a 10m+ player who is in poor form, resulting in you considering benching him? I'd argue he needs to be sold for a different premium player.

Well I think this depends on so many factors - how long you think the dip in form is, other teamsheet issues, availability of free transfers etc

Because of this I think its something that has to be assessed on a case by case basis.

As an example, it may be more point efficient for me to keep an expensive player on the bench in bad form who has just returned from injury/suspension. If I have adequate cover for what I believe is going to be his "period of dip" then it may be a viable option to bench him for a few weeks (not saying it is, and there's no way to be 100% certain)

Then this is just a difference in strategy, rather than the right/wrong thing to do. I would always trust my decision to have a premium player in my squad, enough to play him.

1: Sanchez vs Man City and Downing vs Hull City
2: Benching Rooney for a cheapie, cant remember who was it.
3: Benching Baines over a cheapie. (this one backfired as Baines got assist that week)
Three incident I can recall where I played a cheapie over a premium player and got rewarded. I did ask before GW and obviously the cheapie to bench was favourite. Cant say they were wrong... Maybe I was lucky with all those results but price of a player shouldnt stop you from benching a player.
            ----
Re Hazard, I have 2 simple rule when I go for 8-man attack and need to decide who'll be benched(1st season, so have made some mad rules 😛 )
#1: Never bench a penalty taker
#2: Start a player with easy fixture

This is why fantasy football is so interesting. Its an imperfect hobbie because you can never tell whether a decision you made resulted in a good outcome because of luck or good decision making. I think in the long run (i.e. a season) the answer will become more clear whether you've been a good deciion maker or merely lucky!

There will always be cases where a lower priced player will outscore everyone else in a given week.

Benching yes, captain probably not so much.

There's a reason I have the higher priced players in my team for most seasons.

This season has been a bit different though with players like Kane and Austin. I've never considered benching either because of their price and it hasn't put me off captaining either.

As of now, nope but till couple of months ago (till Kane didn't become a juggernaut and some more started playing decent), I can't say it didn't affect me.

Basically, a player's price is determined by his underlying potential as well as history which plays in my mind as well when deciding on bench/captain

Of course it does. How often have we left points on the bench because we'd rather start an out of form Aguero or Sanchez? or another top player with a difficult fixture. Players are expensive because they are normally reliable FPL assets and we fall back on this rather than the unreliability and unpredictability of cheaper players. Eventually we learn that players such as Kane can be relied upon, then its an exercise in trust. Eventually we begin to trust these new reliable cheap players but it takes a while. Very few would have seen him as a captaincy option in the first half of the season.

    10. Carlos Kickaball

Amazingly from what I've seen, is that people think they favour more expensive players, and expect a lot of them, and as a result end up favouring cheap players and being completely unaware of it.

For example, if there is a fairly even captain decision between a 7m and a 11m player, some players take great pleasure in saying lets not get distracted by the price tag and captain the cheap one.

Secondly when we watch the players we are very critical when expensive players play badly, and full of praise when cheap ones do well. As a result Agüero will have a moderate game but not score, and we'll get lots of people chatting about how he's lost it, someone like Kane will play completely terribly against Manchester United, but it will just get forgotten. If a premium had played like Kane did against United people would have made a big fuss about it.

Additionally people always remember the times when they think they've been smart captaining a cheap player, and they love to go on about that time they captain Sigurðsson, Downing or Austin and it becomes far to prominent in their minds.

Nope. But the premium players are premium because they're consistent and fixture proof. Which is often why they're captaincy choices too. Kane is a freak of FPL.

I tell you what I love football but the refereeing and governing body is so amateurish! They should hook up the referee's with microphones, have referees in the TV box and properly analyse contentious decisions. Retrospective punish shouldn't be a thing - it should be dealt with in the game according to the rules! Retrospective punishment it me just says the game was unfairly played out!

      Sorry, rant over 🙂

Nah....Contentious decisions remain contentious decisions even on review. Many, many times you have pundits and experts disagreeing over a decision made on the pitch even after analysing situations over and over again with the benefit of cameras. All you will be doing is moving the contentious decision from the pitch to the stands.

The only time video refs could be used is for cold hard factual mistakes like sending off the wrong player...no argument with that.

You mean whilst the review is happening ?...yeah, I'd actually like that...but it wouldn't change the fact that so many contentious decisions are a matte of opinion and interpretation. It just shifts the contentious decision from the pitch to the stands.

Well maybe what Pulis mentioned last week about having 2 "challenges" is a good idea? If a decision is inconclusive then I guess its a drop-ball? I don't know. Clearly the system will need perfecting and clearly its not going to happen any time soon!

Aye...It'll come at some point but I think people are mistaken if they think it will stop controversial decisions being made. The biggest problem will always be the very many border line decisions that are made, within a matter of weeks the video refs themselves will come under fire...mark my words.

It will only ever work for black and white factual decisions. Cricket and tennis lend themselves a bit more readily to video technology for decisions with the LBW decisions and snicks for cricket, and line calls for tennis for example...those are factual decisions.

But then how do you expect this country to produce enough players?
Look at Germany and how strict their rules are on foreign players. There is a small amount of foreign players allowed and they are current world champions.

Gotta agree with this, certainly the intent part. Difficult to measure but that is what it comes down to.

And I'm pretty sure rugby doesn't base it on that, if you put in a viciously dangerous tackle in rugby you're going to get banned regardless of the damage done.

Skrtel denies the charges. He actually has a decent case. He can argue his momentum made it hard for him to stop since he was in a full sprint.

Funnily enough Costa didn't get charged for this which was worse:

They don't have to prove he had a guilty mind though, they just have to rule on what they think was most likely. He very likely meant to stamp on DDG so he'll very likely get a ban.

They couldn't prove Costa had a guilty mind either, it was still fair to ban him. They couldn't prove that Terry meant to be racist but they still banned him too.

If a United player had done what Skrtel did then the Liverpool fans would have expected a ban too and rightly so.

Liverpool and Man U players hate each other and if they can get away with something naughty to each other they will. Some people like Costa hate everyone they play against.

Sadly they are still not bright enough to realise that anything they do will be seen on a camera from a variety of angles.

My take on defensive decision making for the rest of the season:

Assume all defenders from the same team have the same point expectations.

Take 3 defenders from different teams (all 3 teams have same point expectations). The expected total of these players is the same as the expected total of having all 3 defenders from just one of these teams. After these 3 teams have played, it is extremely likely that the defenders from one team scored really high, another average, and the last really low.

Having one defender from each team means that your return will always be higher than the worst performing team. But it also means that your return will always be lower than having 3 defenders from the best performing team.

Conclusion - as more & more fantasy managers begin to chase points as the season comes to an end, these managers should be looking to double or even triple up on their defensive line. Doing this will remove the diversification barrier that is limiting their point potential

But we can't. Ivanovic Clyne Bertie et al have higher point expectation because of attacking return.

      1. AUD/GBP Wizard
        • 10 Years
        9 years, 1 month ago

Even if the expectations are different there may (but not always) still be an argument for having all defenders from one team at this stage. By swapping Ivan for Alderwield, the increase the variability of your potential score could outweigh the fact that Alderwield's expected return is lower than Ivan's

I admit my example at the top is simple and it is designed to get people thinking. If you have expcted returns for Ivan, Clyne, Bert and other players you can work out mathematically what the best thing to do is

That's exactly what I'm advocating (putting your eggs in one basket) IF you are chasing to win a mini-league or something. Its a risky strategy, but I think its a better risk to make then say make puts in midfield and attack. Without a shadow of a doubt you will a great chance either flop or shoot up the rankings if you have 3 defenders in the same team. If you have a midfield differntial its really not gonna do too much

There is a limitation to this approach though however, even though not particularly large. On average if you have 3 player in 3 different games there is up to 18 BPS available, 3 players in the same game have a limit of 6 (excluding instances of equal BPS scores).

Solid points, think the likes of double Chelsea, double Saints isn't a taboo idea at all Could certainly work considering the calibre of their defense and the fixtures coming up. Even more so as the forward options in said teams are definitely an acquired taste in the sense that both Costa and Mane are by no means template players. Using those coveted spots on your defense and forgoing some unreliable ubers is a great alternative.

It also give you the flexibility to switch between a 442 and 343 accordingly, can think of many times this season when the top teams only garnered clean sheets while the forwards options blanked. Some GW's work perfectly for your strategy. good post.

Good topic, I think its better to get three bap magnets defenders from 3 dif teams to maximise returns potential, eg Sakko, Bertrand, Williams than 2/3 from same team. Many reasons, 1 being more bonus potential when keep cleanies. The examples given often get the 3bps when they keep cleanies. When Che keep cleanies, defenders rarely get more than 1 bp, unlike with Sou/Swa. Diversification handy to deal with flexibility for must signings for captaincy in double GWs, weather cancellations etc. Double ups have never worked for me.
