Scouting the Doubles – Gameweek 34 – Chelsea

Unbeaten since their New Year’s Day mauling at Spurs, Chelsea face one last big test of their title credentials when then travel to Arsenal in the first clash of their double Gameweek 34. Crucially, Jose Mourinho’s men know that wins against the Gunners and Leicester in the next week would bring the title to Stamford Bridge, though the Blues don’y have it easy, with both their upcoming opponents having form on their side.

The Prospects

Since falling to that 5-3 defeat at White Hart Lane, Chelsea have strung together a 12-match unbeaten run, winning nine games and drawing three in the process. Their success has been predicated on a solid defence, with no side conceding fewer goals (seven) than the London club over that period. A largely favourable schedule beyond the double (CRY, LIV, wba, SUN), which includes three home ties, ensures that any prospective investors won’t need to plan an exit route for their new Chelsea recruits.

The Blues head-to-head with Arsene Wenger’s men is shaping up to be a pivotal encounter. Like Jose Mourinho’s side, Arsenal haven’t tasted defeat since they were bested at White Hart Lane, recording victories in all eight of their subsequent league clashes. This exceptional run of form has in part been inspired by Olivier Giroud’s most productive spell at the Gunners, with the French marksman tallying seven goals in as many starts. With Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey also in fine form, Chelsea’s rearguard will be keeping tabs on a bevy of threats.

Mourinho’s men then close out their double with a visit to the King Power Stadium, as Nigel Pearson’s troops strive to climb clear of the relegation zone. The Foxes have discovered their scoring touch in the last four Gameweeks, netting more goals (10) than any other side in that period. Furthermore, Leicester have registered clean sheets in two of their previous three home clashes – demonstrating their resolve to beat the drop. That being said, they’ve still shipped seven goals in their last four match-ups, which plays into the hands of the free-scoring Eden Hazard.

The Likely Lads

Only Harry Kane (50%) can lay claim to a higher ownership than Eden Hazard (44%), who’s delivered attacking returns in all but four of his last 17 starts for Chelsea and now sits 31 points clear of his nearest challenger in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. The Belgian winger has tallied more goals (four) than any other midfielder in the last six Gameweeks, with only David Silva and Alexis Sanchez (both nine) managing more attempts on target than the 11.3-priced midfielder over that stretch. To further bolster Hazard’s case for inclusion, he’s also notched three assists in seven and scored in both the reverse fixtures – it’s little wonder, then, that he’s the runaway leader in this week’s Captain Poll.

Cesc Fabregas has contributed to 20 league goals (three goals, 17 assists) in his debut Blues campaign – as compared to Hazard’s 22 (13 goals, nine assists) and Diego Costa’s 22 (19 goals, three assists). After a drop off in form, the Spaniard has rediscovered some consistency and served up a goal and two assists in his last four starts – at 9.4, he offers a midfield double-up option alongside Hazard, with doubts now hovering over all three of the Blues forwards as we head towards the double.

Branislav Ivanovic (7.7) tops the Fantasy Premier League defender rankings with an impressive 160 points – due in no small part to the four goals and five assists he’s tallied this term. Despite not producing any attacking returns in his last four outings, the Serbian right-back has offered the biggest goal threat of any Chelsea defender in the last six Gameweeks, attempting four shots at goal.

John Terry (6.9) offers a cheaper alternative to Ivanovic or double-up defensive option, bearing in mind that the Blues have now chalked up back-to-back clean sheets. Although he possesses an inferior points per game average (4.5) to Ivanovic (5.0), Terry has executed more shots from inside the penalty box (three) than his team-mate (two) in their previous six matches.

The Cheeky Punts

With a points per game average (3.8) well below the other regulars in Chelsea’s back line, Thibaut Courtois doesn’t instantly stand out as an alluring acquisition. Nonetheless, Arsenal haven’t failed to score in any of their encounters at the Emirates this season, which suggests a clean sheet is an unlikely outcome for the visitors. In such an event, the Belgian shot-stopper’ save points could be invaluable – Courtois has earned six save points in the Blues’ last seven. The one concern is that if Chelsea win the title early, Petr Cech could be handed matches over the final four Gameweeks, thus lessening Coutois’ appeal.

Having started each of the last six Gameweeks, Gary Cahill has seen off the challenge of Kurt Zouma and established himself alongside Terry once again. At 6.3, he’s a little more budget-friendly than his skipper and, like Courteous, his first-team place looks secure until the Blues clinch the title at least. Cesar Azpilicueta has earned more bonus bonus (four) in the last two matches than any Chelsea defender but Filipe Luis remains a threat to his pitch time at left-back.

After starting 14 of Chelsea’s first 16 fixtures this campaign, Oscar has played a bit-part role of late, clocking an average of 44 minutes in his last four appearances. In spite of that, a deft assist for Hazard’s goal on the weekend could afford the Brazil international increased minutes in the double, as attempts to build upon impressive haul of six goals and eight assists this season. Mourinho could easily field Ramires on the right against Arsenal in an attempt to stifle Sanchez, though, placing question marks over Oscar’s prospects.

At this point in time, the injury situation up front makes it impossible to recommend any Chelsea striker. Third-choice Didier Drogba has started the last two but the severity of his ankle injury is yet unknown, whilst we really need to wait until Friday lunchtime before Mourinho gives us any sort of inclination as to whether Diego Costa or Loic Remy will be able to play any part in either of the upcoming matches.

    Which two to bench?

    A) Sanchez (CHE)
    B) Giroud (CHE)
    C) Cambiasso (bur, CHE)
    D) McShane (cry, LIV)

Going to pay Terry and Ivanovic against Arsenal if it makes a difference.

To all Leicester fans (or anyone who knows), what chance Albrighton plays both games this gameweek?

Currently got Moreno and Cambiasso. Given Cambiasso will sit on my bench after GW34 for the rest of the season in a 3-4-3, is it worthwhile swapping him for Albrighton which would free up the funds to have Skrtel rather than Moreno? Boils down to whether Cambiasso's score this week will be sufficiently more than Albrighton's to offset Skrtel's score over the ne t few weeks against Moreno. It also means I minimise the value sitting on my bench. Would welcome thoughts.

I think you will need one injury cover and Cambiasso could be the man. Not often can you go all your players for 5 weeks without injury.

How is this looking for a WC team?

    Krul

    Ivanovic Skrtl Schlupp
    Hazard Fabregas Sterling Henderson Diame
    Aguero Vardy

    Subs: Ospina, Giroud, Alderweireld, PVA

It means 10 players for the double and then two Arsenal in preparation for their double.

Wouldn't waste Arsenal spot for Ospina. Özil,Giroud and Sanchez/Ramsey is way to go for Arsenal dgw.

I don't get the Krul pick when you have space for Schmeichel. The toon are on their holidays already. I've also shied away from Ospina as Arsenal spaces are crucial and I'd rather 2 mids and a striker than one being a keeper.

    1FT 0.8 in the bank

The great dilemma is Vardy -to become defoe week 37, thus 2 dgwk forwards of lesser teams- vs Kane

    A) Schmeichell in for Krul
    B) Vardy in for Kane
    C) Both A+ B for a hit ?
    D) Any other suggestions please?

    Krul (Pantillimon)

    Skrtl, Terry, Demichellis (PVA, Alderweilder)

Hazard (c) Fabregas Sterling, Cambiasso, Silva

    Aguero, Giroud Kane

He is not very physically imposing abd has looked a bit shaky, erratic and hesitant at times.

Kane might smell blood and light it up

Noone considering N'Doye as a differential GW punt? Would become Giroud after GW34. Somewhat better fixtures than Leicester, and someone on here presented favourable stats for him. Then of course, Leiceister in much better form than Hull.

OK, that's debatable I admit. On the other hand, Palace not got much to play for, and I'd still asy that Liverpool at home would give slightly higher chances of attacking returns than Chelsea at home for Leicester, considering Mourhino has parked the bus until title is secured whereas Liverpool will attack in a final attempt for 4th place.

Interesting that one - his stats are good apparently, but based on easier matches than GW34. Might just not be worth it, as FT in GW35 could be put to better use. And if going with Leicester forward, they can be kept for GW35 against Newcastle.

The trick with N'Doye is play him in 34, bench him in 35, play him in 36 and switch him for Defoe in DGW37.

Assuming you also want Aguero and Giroud, for most teams it will make no sense at all to take N'Doye unless they are happy to lose Kane.

          1. Pompel
            • 10 Years

Differential strategy for sure. I'm going with Aguero + Giroud as most are. But doesn't feel quite right to dump Kane for N'Doye though....

Not a differential strategy. I don't like Kane's next 3 at all. 37 is good but you would then have a choice of Kane back or Defoe on DGW.

Losing Kane was one of the easier wildcard decisions for me. Losing Rooney was much harder.

I'm leading my ML by 21 points. I have no WC - no hits were taken.

I could throw Wasilewski in there to get 5 but not sure that is a good idea.

If Silva is injured then will get in coutinho also.

How's this look for a WC team, thinking it might be worth getting rid of Bertrand and upgrading somewhere else but not sure

    K Davis
    Ivanovic-Terry-Skrtel- Schlupp
    Sanchez-Hazard(C)-Sterling-Henderson
    Aguero-Vardy

    Kane-Bertrand-Boyd

    1. Skokym

Too heavy on the defence imo. Would svae some cash for Vardy -- Giroud move

  17. Tomas Brolin ate all Depays

    Krul
    Ivanovic-Clyne-Bellerin
    Fab-Hazard(C)-Sterling-Henderson-Silva
    Aguero-Vardy

    Kane-Toby-Naughton-Elliot

Clyne + Naughton to Morgan and Moreno for a -8 ???
Sorts out Naughton and gives me 3 DGWers at the back. Still hvae Toby for S'hampton cover

Price rises not happening as predicted this week, really could do with Sterling going up by 0.2 so I can do a straight swap for Rambo.

Main rival is finally sweating. Going into the double gameweek he's got Hazard, Fabregas, Ivanovic, Moreno and Mignolet.
I have Hazard, Fabregas, Terry and Sterling.
I'm absolutely positive that he's going to captain Hazard.

If you were me would you captain Hazard as well or risk captaining Sterling?

Got 51 points to make up.

    1. trinzoo

      I would risk!

ermmm he is in better position than you are with those doublegameweekers 😕

51 points is that much that you need to take risks.

I would risk. I am in the same position but chasing a 15 point lead.

Liverpool have better fixtures then Chelsea in the DGW

After flirting with Cambiasso, I think I prefer this balance:

    Mignolet*
    Terry* Schlupp* Wollsheid
Hazard (c)*, Fabregas*, Henderson*, Sterling*, Sanchez
    Vardy*, Aguero,

    SUBS – 1) Kane, 2) PVA (DGW 37), 3) Panti (DGW37), 4) Toby / Vlaar / Duff

    GW35: Save
    GW36: Vardy > Giroud & Cesc > Silva & Sterling > CHEAPO..maybe Cattermole (-4)
    GW37: Silva > Ramsey

Leaves me with 5 DGWers in 37

    What do you think guys?

    Cheers in advance

Morning all. Losing a lot of value in transferring out Silva and Kane for this, but what do you think?

    Schmeichel, Myhill
    Ivan, Moreno, Cahill, Wollscheid, Bruce
    Hazard, Sterling, Henderson, Sanchez, Cambiasso
    Aguero, Vardy, Giroud

Would bench one of Sanchez, Giroud or Cambiasso plus the two cheap defenders. Bit sad to have to go for Moreno and Cahill over Skrtl and Terry but have nothing left in the bank.

Given the £ constraints, this looks good. Wouldn't bench Cambiasso, or might as well just have a 4.2 mid and upgrade Moreno to Skrtl

what is the consensus on Kane vs Vardy ?

    Kane

    Plays for a better team
    Seems to be fixture proof

    Horrible fixtures
Spurs arent playing well and it is debatable if they seek europa league football for next season
Noone will captain him till the end of the season, even week 37 he has hull arsenal have a double

    Vardy

    Great form
Great fixtures till the end of the season
Can be easily swapped for Defoe week 37

    it is leicester though...

30 goal fixture proof striker v 3 goal striker with a game against Chelsea.

u dont look at just an individual, u have to look in totality

the rest of the spurs are in holiday mood
