Scouting the Doubles – Gameweek 34 – Chelsea

Unbeaten since their New Year’s Day mauling at Spurs, Chelsea face one last big test of their title credentials when then travel to Arsenal in the first clash of their double Gameweek 34. Crucially, Jose Mourinho’s men know that wins against the Gunners and Leicester in the next week would bring the title to Stamford Bridge, though the Blues don’y have it easy, with both their upcoming opponents having form on their side.

The Prospects

Since falling to that 5-3 defeat at White Hart Lane, Chelsea have strung together a 12-match unbeaten run, winning nine games and drawing three in the process. Their success has been predicated on a solid defence, with no side conceding fewer goals (seven) than the London club over that period. A largely favourable schedule beyond the double (CRY, LIV, wba, SUN), which includes three home ties, ensures that any prospective investors won’t need to plan an exit route for their new Chelsea recruits.

The Blues head-to-head with Arsene Wenger’s men is shaping up to be a pivotal encounter. Like Jose Mourinho’s side, Arsenal haven’t tasted defeat since they were bested at White Hart Lane, recording victories in all eight of their subsequent league clashes. This exceptional run of form has in part been inspired by Olivier Giroud’s most productive spell at the Gunners, with the French marksman tallying seven goals in as many starts. With Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey also in fine form, Chelsea’s rearguard will be keeping tabs on a bevy of threats.

Mourinho’s men then close out their double with a visit to the King Power Stadium, as Nigel Pearson’s troops strive to climb clear of the relegation zone. The Foxes have discovered their scoring touch in the last four Gameweeks, netting more goals (10) than any other side in that period. Furthermore, Leicester have registered clean sheets in two of their previous three home clashes – demonstrating their resolve to beat the drop. That being said, they’ve still shipped seven goals in their last four match-ups, which plays into the hands of the free-scoring Eden Hazard.

The Likely Lads

Only Harry Kane (50%) can lay claim to a higher ownership than Eden Hazard (44%), who’s delivered attacking returns in all but four of his last 17 starts for Chelsea and now sits 31 points clear of his nearest challenger in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. The Belgian winger has tallied more goals (four) than any other midfielder in the last six Gameweeks, with only David Silva and Alexis Sanchez (both nine) managing more attempts on target than the 11.3-priced midfielder over that stretch. To further bolster Hazard’s case for inclusion, he’s also notched three assists in seven and scored in both the reverse fixtures – it’s little wonder, then, that he’s the runaway leader in this week’s Captain Poll.

Cesc Fabregas has contributed to 20 league goals (three goals, 17 assists) in his debut Blues campaign – as compared to Hazard’s 22 (13 goals, nine assists) and Diego Costa’s 22 (19 goals, three assists). After a drop off in form, the Spaniard has rediscovered some consistency and served up a goal and two assists in his last four starts – at 9.4, he offers a midfield double-up option alongside Hazard, with doubts now hovering over all three of the Blues forwards as we head towards the double.

Branislav Ivanovic (7.7) tops the Fantasy Premier League defender rankings with an impressive 160 points – due in no small part to the four goals and five assists he’s tallied this term. Despite not producing any attacking returns in his last four outings, the Serbian right-back has offered the biggest goal threat of any Chelsea defender in the last six Gameweeks, attempting four shots at goal.

John Terry (6.9) offers a cheaper alternative to Ivanovic or double-up defensive option, bearing in mind that the Blues have now chalked up back-to-back clean sheets. Although he possesses an inferior points per game average (4.5) to Ivanovic (5.0), Terry has executed more shots from inside the penalty box (three) than his team-mate (two) in their previous six matches.

The Cheeky Punts

With a points per game average (3.8) well below the other regulars in Chelsea’s back line, Thibaut Courtois doesn’t instantly stand out as an alluring acquisition. Nonetheless, Arsenal haven’t failed to score in any of their encounters at the Emirates this season, which suggests a clean sheet is an unlikely outcome for the visitors. In such an event, the Belgian shot-stopper’ save points could be invaluable – Courtois has earned six save points in the Blues’ last seven. The one concern is that if Chelsea win the title early, Petr Cech could be handed matches over the final four Gameweeks, thus lessening Coutois’ appeal.

Having started each of the last six Gameweeks, Gary Cahill has seen off the challenge of Kurt Zouma and established himself alongside Terry once again. At 6.3, he’s a little more budget-friendly than his skipper and, like Courteous, his first-team place looks secure until the Blues clinch the title at least. Cesar Azpilicueta has earned more bonus bonus (four) in the last two matches than any Chelsea defender but Filipe Luis remains a threat to his pitch time at left-back.

After starting 14 of Chelsea’s first 16 fixtures this campaign, Oscar has played a bit-part role of late, clocking an average of 44 minutes in his last four appearances. In spite of that, a deft assist for Hazard’s goal on the weekend could afford the Brazil international increased minutes in the double, as attempts to build upon impressive haul of six goals and eight assists this season. Mourinho could easily field Ramires on the right against Arsenal in an attempt to stifle Sanchez, though, placing question marks over Oscar’s prospects.

At this point in time, the injury situation up front makes it impossible to recommend any Chelsea striker. Third-choice Didier Drogba has started the last two but the severity of his ankle injury is yet unknown, whilst we really need to wait until Friday lunchtime before Mourinho gives us any sort of inclination as to whether Diego Costa or Loic Remy will be able to play any part in either of the upcoming matches.

    So now a photo has emerged of Jack Grealish taking laughing gas - a LEGAL high - 6 months ago. A 19 year old kid bursts onto the scene to star in an FA Cup semi final, his career just taking off, and a within a week the S*n dig out a 6 month old photo, so when he was 18/just turning 19, of him engaging in a legal act that is frowned upon by a few scaremongerers. Out to destroy his career before it's even begun; the first sign of a youngster emerging and they think he needs to be put down a peg or two. They truly are the gutter press. Absolute scum.

        Fair point, a better way to phrase it may be that they will go to any lengths for a story (even a non-story like this), and could not care less about the damage that they do. People have been talking about Grealish for 4 days, and already he's been made into part of a "scandal".

    If planning for the double gameweek is making you queasy;
    Don't panic, you've got this, it's really easy;
    Whack in three from Chelsea and Liverpool;
    If you play too conservative you'll look a fool;
    Scared of taking an extra hit?
    Come on, it's only a game, live a bit;
    If you've looked at all your options and are considering McShane;
    Back to the drawing board and start again;
    Fancy a punt, then go with Remy;
    He's gotta be fit now and has been shipped by many;
    When considering your captain read Ruth's post;
    Not going to tell you who I like the most!

    Henry's criticism of Chicharito's late winner in the CL Quarter-Final against Real Madrid's local rivals has to be one of the most ridiculous pieces of 'punditry' I've ever seen. Such a non story.

    ....and to think he gets paid £4m a year for this drivel.

      Does anyone else think he is pretty poor at his job ?! That was obviously an attempt to be controversial. It was pointless drivel, you're right! You can see Souness, Carragher and Rednapp look at one another when he says things as if to gauge what they're thinking, as he does talk pointless chat. I'd rather he wasn't on the panels, tbh...!

          They both had this sort of 'nice guy, out of the spotlight' football career so it almost looks like they now NEED to be controversial in order to compensate.

            Yeah. Scholes is hard to watch. Yes, he'll have great football knowledge, but is has next to nothing in personality. Surely they could havegot someone better...

              They think the only criteria should be "was a professional footballer", they should focus on the football knowledge and ability to express it. Michael Owen is a great example - European player of the year, but incredibly dull, and seemingly clueless. I wrote about this topic during the World Cup:

      Yep Henry is starting to annoy me. Probably said it to make headlines. However it was the worst post match analysis I've ever seen. Started by Stelling saying a Ronaldo assist was a collectors item even though he has the second most assists in la liga this season. Henry then criticised a guy for celebrating a winning goal against a fierce rival. Souness and Carra not to be outdone proceeded to cast doubt on Simeones chances at a bigger club...

      1. Big_Andy_GAWA
        • 12 Years
        9 years, 1 month ago

        Criticising his celebration was just plain stupid and demonstrates how little he is able to offer. Who is not going to run frantically towards his fans like he did when he scored. Sure he could celebrate with Ronaldo once he was over near the corner. Absolute nonsense and complete drivel !!!!

      Didn't get that either. Let him celebrate all he wants, he has been patiently waiting for that moment and it was a pretty big game.

      It's simple to criticize, but it takes a different type of person to praise someone else.

        He also said Courtois was more deserving of the YPOTY AWard than Kane the other day. (Sunday?). 😆 😆 Once again, absolute bull...and clearly an attempt to be controversial, when it's just actual nonsense talk. . .

          Has Courtois honestly made **that** many outstanding saves?! Yes, a few. Not many more. A record-breaking 21 (?) - year old striker who has shot to stardom over that. Again, complete and utter nonsense talk from Henry on that one, as well...!!!

    Hey all. This is tricky.

    My team currently is:
    Guzan / K Davis
    Bellerin / Vlaar / Terry / Bertrand / Clyne
    Hazard / Silva / Downing / Eriksen / Philips
    Aguero / Kane / Murray
    No WC, 2FT, 3.9 ITB

    I'm planning Downing & Eriksen -> Sterling & Hendo (giving me 4DGWers and 2.7 ITB)

    But then what? I'm thinking I've got too much SOT defence, based on current form and future fixtures. So I could take hits to swap them out for some coombination of Mignolet, Skrtel, Ivanovic or Azpilicueta (2BPS in each of the last two games).
    I'm not sold on LEI; I just don't think they'll get anything vs CHE, so they're effectively not a DGW team in my eyes (I know, this is so going to come back and bite me)!

    TLDR:
    Who of KDavis, Bertrand and Clyne should I drop, and who of Migs or Skrtel, Ivan or Aspi should I bring in?

    Much obiliged for any help you can offer! 🙂

        Doing Kane to Vardy now could allow me bring in Giroud, Ramsey and Sanchez before 37.
        Current WC team:
        Mignolet / Myhill
        Ivanovic / Schlupp / Toby / Duff / Yun
        Hazard / Fabregas / Coutinho / Sterling / Boyd
        Aguero / Murray / Kane

    Just a heads up - FFF said that their algorithm needs to be altered to factor in WCs and the DGW. Its seem the threshold for a rise of a player during a DGW is a lot higher than a single GW player

      I'm not sure if the threshold is higher or if WC transfers just don't count towards rises. Either way, both FFF and FPLStatistics are fecked this week!

      We can also compare WC teams if you like...

      I'm going for Morgan, considering I won't have a spare transfer before the end probably.

      Courtois / Myhill

      Morgan, Terry, Skrtel, PVA, Duff

      Hazard, Silva, Sterling, Hendo, Boyd

      Kane Aguero Vardy

      GW35 Vardy > Giroud
      GW36 Sterling > Rambo
      GW37 Silva > Sanchez or Courtois > Ospina

      Dawson > is likely to balance out if you plan to play Schlupp beyond the double.

      Hold Silva. If City go back to 4-4-2 he's hot property

      Cambiaso = meh, but then I don't fancy Bolasie much with Palace's fixtures.

      Kane > Vardy is also fine if you want to get rid of Kane anyway.

      I take it you don't have much in the bank? If I were to do any more moves in your shoes, I'd do a double hit so I could downgrade somewhere and afford a more attractive DGWer elsewhere

        So the DGWers I have are Ivan, Terry, Migs, Haz and Sterling. Hardly anyone worth a double move besides them or is there?

        You're right I don't have much money ITB. So can't bring in someone better.

        Cheers, Tinkerman, lots of thinking to do then.

      Seems solid, although I am personally thinking of getting Courtois and Morgan over Schmeichel and Ivan on my WC. Saves a lot of cash.

      Also planning to have Vardy, who I'll sell for Giroud next week.

      Interesting approach to save a transfer though I might look into it.

        Hmm that does save alot of cash...have to consider that now. Not worried about Cech getting game time? But that would probably be at end of the season and can ship him then.

        I'd considered Vardy in as well...but i'd prefer to save the transfer. Just gives abit more flexibility with free transfers. Intend to go into GW37 with 2 freebies

          Yeah I am worred about Cech but Myhill will play and probably get some save points. I doubt I'll have a FT to sell Courtois but I want him for the next 3 fixtures primarily anyway. Arguably no Chelsea player will be save once they wrap up the league.

          I looked into it and Albrighton will get 4 points I reckon. I think I'd rather have Vardy or simply play Giroud.

          3 from Giroud, Sanchez, Ramsey and an Arsenal defender plus PVA is enough for GW37 I reckon

          1. Shifty
            • 10 Years
            9 years, 1 month ago

            that's the transition plan I have as well...Giroud Sanchez/Ozil/Ramsey and possible Kosc...plus PVA.

            Curious, why going for 2 chelsea defenders? Considering once they wrap it up, they might play without a care in the world and just put opponents to the sword - ie Fabregas might be a better pick from GW35 onwards.

    I'm probably the only one in top 50k who's fielding Brady 🙂

      Lol. That's brave. Have good potential though. Hope it works out for you. I'm among the boring with Haz.

      Vardy seems like the best differential captain…
      Got to preserve my lead in the Mini League so going with Haz though...

    Not keen on doubling up on Leicester defence so have been looking at non-DGW options and come up with this shortlist (premium and budget option):

    Creswell (Jenkinson)
    Janmaat (R Taylor)
    Demichelis (Kolarov)

    I'm strongly considering Demichelis and Raylor to go alongside Terry, Skrtel and Duff.
