Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 34

As per usual on a Sunday evening, we scour the treatment rooms for any new injuries sustained over the weekend’s matches. United have worries up front ahead of their weekend home clash with West Brom after Wayne Rooney picked up a knee problem during this afternoon’s loss at Everton.

Burnley
Sam Vokes missed the Clarets’ home loss to Leicester due to a thigh problem, Sean Dyche has confirmed:

“We need goals, because we haven’t been scoring enough lately. We had a tricky spell earlier in the season and came through, and we need something similar now. We’re looking for something for Lukas Jutkiewicz. Sam Vokes has a niggling thigh injury, so it’s a chance for Jukes to show what he can do.”

Chelsea
Oscar was replaced at the break in today’s draw at Arsenal following a clash of heads with Gunners keeper David Ospina. The Brazilian was sent to hospital for scans, with Jose Mourinho saying the club’s staff were “scared” over his condition.

Post-match, the Blues boss admitted that Loic Remy won’t be fit in time for the midweek trip to Leicester.

Crystal Palace
The Eagles were without Joel Ward for the weekend home loss to Hull due to a shin problem. Alan Pardew is not yet ruling the defender out of next weekend’s trip to the Bridge:

“Fingers crossed he will be back for Chelsea. I’m sure Chelsea aren’t [crossing theirs]. He’s been great. It’s a shin injury…We missed Wardy’s quality at the back.”

Leicester
Jeffrey Schlupp picked up a knock ahead of the Foxes’ win at Burnley, whilst Nigel Pearson also confirmed David Nugent remains a worry with a calf complaint:

“It’s always about trying to get the best we have available. We picked up one or two knocks, David Nugent and Jeff Schlupp didn’t make it today, but it’s an opportunity for other players to come in.”

Liverpool
Alberto Moreno missed the Reds’ goalless draw at West Brom with a knock, according to local reports.

Man City
Yaya Toure is set to be assessed after being forced off during City’s narrow win over Villa with a hamstring problem, Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed:

“Toure had a hamstring problem so he couldn’t play the second half. It is difficult to know today what happened, but it was not a precaution. It was a muscle injury and we will see tomorrow [Sunday] or Monday how bad it is.”

Man United
Wayne Rooney was forced off towards the end of this afternoon’s loss at Everton due to a knee injury, Louis van Gaal has confirmed:

“Yes, Rooney was injured. He had a shot on his knee, so we have to wait and see how heavy (serious) it is.”

Newcastle
Daryl Janmaat was forced off due to illness as the Magpies fell to defeat at home to Swansea. John Carver revealed post-match:

“We lost Daryl Janmaat because of sickness, so he should be okay for next week, but he wasn’t feeling too well, so I had to get him off the pitch.”

Southampton
Morgan Schneiderlin limped off towards the end of the Saints’ draw with Spurs due to a knee injury, according to post-match reports.

Stoke
Geoff Cameron was subbed off with four minutes remaining of the Potters’ draw against Sunderland due to a hamstring problem.

Swansea
Wayne Routledge has been ruled out for the remainder of the season with an ankle injury. The Swans confirmed on Saturday afternoon that the winger has already undergone surgery in order to address a long-standing problem.

Jefferson Montero was replaced on 69 minutes after sustaining a thigh problem.

Tottenham
Ben Davies was stretchered off in the weekend draw at Southampton with a shoulder injury. Post-match, Mauricio Pochettino went on to say:

”Ben [Davies] is OK now. He suffered a dislocation of the shoulder but he is much better now. We need to assess him in the next few days. Not a longer [-term] problem.”

West Ham
Winston Reid missed the weekend draw at QPR with a hamstring problem, the Hammers have revealed.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

my main rival in my head to head league is 3 points behind me, i still have to play him GW36.

    Now my plan was

    GW35 murray > giroud
    GW 36 fabregas & henderson > ramsey & sanchez -4pt

but saying as I play him 36 i'm tempted to have taken the hit GW35 instead.

so should i stick with my original plan or in GW35 do murray & fabregas > giroud & sanchez leaving 1 transfer to do in 36 - Hendo > ramsey (no points hits that week)

    cheers

If you're going to take a hit either way, better to do it in GW35 before your rivals match 🙂 Good luck too!

Is there any chance at all that Hazard will be rested this week?

Jose already has told us that he is tired, and this is a game against relegation fodder, three days after a tough game against Arsenal.

don't think so. less game time probably - but no reason to rest him completely imo. let him finish the season strong, have a good break. and back to biz.

Fancy Chelsea to put teams to the sword once title is wrapped up to shut critics up...and Hazard will be key.

wouldn't make him POTY. Hazard this season has developed from a talented winger who showboats into a match winner.

Austin has just scored goals from shooting a lot, and shooting hard.

What if Haz misses a few penaltys and gets a red card while Sanchez scores 10 goals in the remaining games and arsenal win the title? Just seems silly to me, it ain't over till the fat lady sings

Chelsea winning the league likely to push it in his favour. That's just how any POTY awards work - same with Balon d'Or, same with WC player of the tournament. Success is a key determinant.

As mentioned above, Hazard has developed into a match winner this season and thoroughly deserves the award.

I agree he deserves it, I'm just saying I think it should be decided once the season is finished. Can't think of any other sports that give out awards before the end of the regular season

He had to have a painkilling injection. Nugent should be available, Kramaric is an option, Chelsea is not a game where they will reasonably expect much, Newcastle on Saturday is crucial and Pearson has talked about possible rotation. I think Vardy may well be benched considering all that.

No Return Date for Sturridge... what is it with him and extended absences?

They still have no idea what's wrong with Moreno specifically and I think its the first time I've seen that website list an injury as "Knock"

    1. Dr Dream

They can't really be surprised by it. He did well last season to play as many games as he did but this is his norm. Poor buy by BR.

      1. Heels_Over_Head
        • 10 Years

Deciding not to buy Remy and buying Balotelli was poor by BR.

Not being able to bring in any true stud players from big clubs when they were in Champion's League was very poor by BR.

Sturridge has been good when healthy and a good buy for them, but for a club with Champion's League this year and aspirations to be top again, to only have one quality striker - often injured or not - is irresponsible at best and more likely incompetence.

The bottom line for a striker is how many goals you score in a season...,Sturridge and Balo are poor on that front, very poor. I agree about Remy, he would have fit in very nicely at Pool.

    The Chelsea Effect?

Something I have been aware of this season is the destructive quality Chelsea have. Teams (especially rivals at the top) put a huge effort into games against Chelsea and I have often noticed that they perform poorly in the next game afterwards. Here are some examples I just checked out:

    5/10 Chelsea 2-0 Arsenal, 18/10 Arsenal 2-2 Hull
3/12 Chelsea 3-0 Spurs, 6/12 Spurs 0-0 Palace (Spurs were flying before the Chelsea game)
    1/1 Spurs 5-3 Chelsea, 5/1 Burnley 1-1 Spurs
20/1 Liverpool 1-1 Chelsea, 24/1 Liverpool 0-0 Bolton (Liverpool were in great form at the time)
    31/1 Chelsea 1-1 City, 7/2 City 1-1 Hull
18/4 Chelsea 1-0 United, 26/4 Everton 3-0 United (United were also in great form prior to Chelsea)

Obviously it doesn't always happen. But I think there is a pattern to be discerned. Chelsea can break teams' confidence because no matter how well they play they can't (usually) find a way to win. 3 defeats in all competitions all season (and none against main rivals) is quite an achievement.

I wonder how Arsenal will perform away to Hull next weekend?

I'm not sure its a confidence issue. I think its just very tiring trying to break down Chelsea's defense. The players work harder against Chelsea during the match so they're more tired for the next one than normal.

Makes sense then even if the team beats Chelsea.

I think it's both. When you put a huge effort in, mentally and/or physically there is often a 'trough' afterwards, that happens in all walks of life. When you aren't able to succeed despite the effort it can set confidence back as well, and confidence (the inner feeling that you will succeed) is a very important intangible in professional sports.

yeah... we'll see... Arsenal have extra time with the last match of the week on Monday at Hull...

          also

          - Hull will be feeling kind of good about themselves after the last win
          - Hull need two more wins to ensure safety
          - Arsenal are out of the running for 1st place and now are firmly in the race for the eponymous Wenger Cup (4th place) which requires finesse to achieve

            Indeed. 😉

I mean, he doesn't want to set the benchmark too high, right? 3rd would show improvement but also be a bit safer in terms of setting expectations I guess.

But for what it's worth I think I may save FT and hold off on my planned Fabregas to Sanchez for 1 more week. Apart from anything else it's one less game's risk of a Sanchez injury prior to DGW.

Chelsea tactics make them win even when don't play well . This must be affecting the players of opposite team, you played better and still you lost is a pity .

i think this is reading into it a bit too much. Spurs results must always be taken with a pinch of salt. Liverpool in a cup game isn't the best example. I would be interested to see how many wins some of these teams have recorded after games against Chelsea aswell.

Well, you can always check it out. 😉

LVG's comments about Sunday being the first time this season that United have been less motivated than their opponents were what made me look a bit deeper because I have been struck on a number of occasions by how Chelsea's opponents play poorly the following week.

Or you could have done it properly instead of hand picking examples that support your theory 😉

I don't really buy it. Only in one of the examples above did the team actually lose the following game which was Utd yesterday.

If I was trying to make a scientific study I'd have done it differently. But I wasn't. Scientific principles aren't the be all and end all of rationality.

All the examples I quoted showed a team under-performing after playing Chelsea, whether a draw or a defeat. There are also examples where there appears to have been no effect. I find the apparent pattern interesting. Others may see no pattern at all. Either is fine, I am not trying to prove anything.

Don't do anything with it. Was just some musings really. General interest stuff rather than anything to base FPL decisions on.

Having said that I may well save FT this week and bring Sanchez in the week after unless his price looks like rising. 😉

I'd like to do something with it. I rate your posts. Just not convinced about the observation.

The result of the arsenal/hull match will neither vilify or champion this observation. There are too many other factors at play in that one

Sure. It's a proposition that can't be validated absolutely either way. It was just meant to be an observation really and not anything to base decisions on.

Maybe I should have posted it on the Chelsea website instead of FFS. It would go down well there. 😀

this aside, i think Arsenal wont do well at Hull

I'm in a bit of a quandary about that actually. I was intending to bench N'Doye this weekend but keep him for the juicy GW36 fixture. But if he scores against Liverpool I just won't be able to do it though that would mean benching a Leicester player against Newcastle, also not ideal.

The fact that Arsenal-Hull was a 2-2 draw in the next game after Arsenal lost to Chelsea back in October gives me a bit of encouragement anyway.

                Cambiasso.

I think Costa will be the ultimate differential until the end of the season. With most teams having 3 CFC players already and therefore not being able to get him and Costa chasing the Golden Boot for the next 3-4 games, this could be carnage...

once again a players health is made less of a priority than winning a football match. you didnt need a medical degree to see that Oscar was clearly concussed yesterday-especially when he got up and was clearly struggling to stand- yet they let him play for the remainder of the half. Its shameful to see people in the know (physios, doctors) fall in line with a managers 'win at all costs' mandate. And this at a club where one of their players has already suffered a serious head injury, one that puts him at risk for the rest of his life. Yet no mention of it in the papers, nothing from the FA. A 24 year old has already retired in the NFL and a young rugby player died in Australia a week ago. But in football, heads are still firmly in the sand

While I agree with the sentiment, the seriousness of a footballer Appearing shaky after a tough tackle is somewhat diluted by the rolling around clutching face screaming in agony, when there is minimum contact. Sniper effect

there is very simple protocols for concussion-every physio should no the signs and and Im sure Oscar exhibited most of them there yesterday. while the context of the ridiculous playacting could be a factor its not a credible excuse for leaving him on the pitch for that long.

    I want Ozil. Do I:

    a) Sell a defender like Skrtel for a 4.5 def, leaving me with money to upgrade Coutinho to Ozil

Nigel Pearson has refused to rule out fielding a weakened side vs. Chelsea, with Leicester facing fellow strugglers Newcastle, QPR and Sunderland in further games to come.

Would he be fined like Mick McCarthy was if this happened? Though presumably he wouldn't be daft enough to use the words 'weakened' himself (would probably say something like 'don't worry, my side can take care of themselves', come to think about it).

No, that can't happen any more. Teams have 25-man squads now and are entitled to play any of them without conditions. Only if Pearson brought in a bunch of youth players could there be any formal complaint made.
