Moving Target

Moving Target – Maarten Stekelenburg

Earlier this week, Southampton announced the signing of Dutch goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg on a season-long loan deal from Fulham.

Having managed just one appearance during a temporary stint at Monaco last term, the 32-year-old shot-stopper is looking to muscle his way into the Saints’ starting lineup, in light of last season’s injury to first choice keeper, Frazer Forster:

“I’m very pleased that I’ve joined. It’s a big, nice club that will play European football – and I can play. Last year I didn’t play a lot, so it’s an opportunity for me. I’m grateful. The last two years weren’t the best of my career. As they say in England: the best is yet to come.”

The History

Stekelenburg trained at the youth academies of Zandvoort ’75 and VV Schoten, before teaming up with Ajax at the age of 15. He eventually broke into the first team in February 2002 and went on to record eight further Eredivisie appearances that season. Stekelenburg assumed the role of back-up for the next two campaigns, being handed 22 league outings.

In his first two terms as Ajax’s number one shot-stopper, the club secured back-to-back KNVB Cup trophies, while the 2007/08 season saw Stekelenburg named as Ajax’s Player of the Year. The Haarlem-born keeper played a bit-part role in 2008/09 due to injury but swiftly reclaimed his starting berth after rehabilitation. Stekelenburg scooped Ajax’s Player of the Year for a second time in the wake of the Dutch giants’ title-winning 2010/11 campaign.

Roma then came calling in the summer of 2011, snapping up the stopper in a €6 million deal. The first Dutch player to sign for the Serie A stalwarts, Stekelenburg managed 29 league appearances in his debut season but tallied just 19 starts in the 2012/13 campaign, prompting a switch to Fulham in June 2013.

Stekelenburg played under Rene Meulensteen but was cast into the shadows following the appointment of Felix Magath, with the German boss preferring David Stockdale between the sticks. As a result, the 6ft 6in keeper moved on loan to Monaco for the 2014/15 season, where he played second fiddle to their incumbent number one, Danijel Subašić, chalking up just eight appearances that included just a single Ligue 1 outing.

In the wake of Edwin van der Sar’s retirement, Stekelenburg established himself as the first-choice Netherlands keeper, notching 54 appearances between 2004 and 2012. He’s since fallen out of favour on the international scene, with a lack of playing time precluding a return to Oranje.

The Prospects

With three Southampton defenders (Nathaniel Clyne, Ryan Bertrand and Jose Fonte) among the top-six scoring defenders after the club racked up 15 clean sheets last term, it’s safe to assume that the Saints’ rearguard starters are due a price hike. As such, the keeper situation could present the most valuable route into their backline.

With some reports suggesting Fraser Forster could be sidelined for the majority of the upcoming season, Kelvin Davis, Paulo Gazzaniga and Stekelenburg will be tussling for that number one berth. Certainly, the latter’s recruitment would suggest that Ronald Koeman wasn’t satisfied with his options in the squad – a notion reinforced by the fact that Southampton recorded just one clean sheet in eight fixtures following Forster’s injury.

Perhaps crucially, it’s worth noting that Koeman shares history with Stekelenburg – having handed the keeper his debut at Ajax – so it’s unlikely the Fulham man would have made the switch without assurances of pitch time. Southampton’s pre-season campaign – which kicks off on July 8 and includes a couple of Europa League qualifying fixtures – will hopefully give a clear indication as to who he favours in Forster’s absence.

With Portuguese right-back Cedric Soares already on the books, and Clyne imminently set to join former loanee Toby Alderweireld through the exit door, Southampton’s defence could be set for major restructuring for the second successive season. However, the Saints coped admirably with the loss of Luke Shaw, Calum Chambers and Dejan Lovren last summer, so there’s every chance they could retain their defensive diligence under Koeman’s considered approach.

Given their favourable opening quintet of fixtures (new, EVE, wat, NOR, wba), Southampton defensive coverage looks like a good bet in the early stages. Aside from the two match-ups against newly promoted outfits, the Saints face off against three sides that they shut out at least once in the previous campaign, heightening their defensive points potential from the offset.

Chile defender Gonzalo Jara has incurred the wrath of his club side Mainz following his controversial actions at the Copa America, with the Bundesliga outfit prepared to let the player leave.

Mainz' sporting director Christian Heidel told Bild: "We do not tolerate that. What makes me more angry than the prod, however, is what happens after. There is nothing I hate more than theatrics. He knows that if an offer comes in, he can go.

    I love the club's response

A lot has changed since then. Not much has changed in the last 6 weeks or so. I think with Schneiderlin Arsenal would be challenging for the title if they can stay healthy like the have for the last 6 months or so (big ask I know).

Even more so if they get an upgrade on Giroud.

I agree. But this is a long term move. United's fanbase is much larger, and have not been shy of declaring their intention to spend big. I think they have a good chance of overtaking Arsenal this season with the right signings.

Schneiderlin wants to raise the profile, and United are one of the most popular teams in the world. Their brand is far stronger than Arsenal's.

I don't agree that Utd is a better choice in terms of success. Utd are in trouble and LVG has not been convincing. Even with the signings they have made and want they won't challenge for the title this season. Arsenal have been getting better and better and more solid and a couple of key signings they could be title contenders this year, or at least next year.

As mentioned Utd won 3 years ago with a squad that was in tatters and a time giving Fergie his final farewell.

Utd were very very lucky yo finish 4th last season and this along with the amount of money they have is why they can buy quality players but I still think they are a ways away from winning much.

Uruguay starting striker in Suarez's absence. Had a quite phenomenal season at Bordeaux after two completely blank ones. €10M should be the price, but in my honest opinion it would be the best for all parties if he renewed his contract and played another season to confirm, as there is a big likelihood he overachieved this season (in goal scoring). Statistically, his previous season was stronger in most ways, but he failed to convert every single open play chance he got. He now finished 21% of his open play chances inside the box. Inside the box that is not untenable, and he is young, progressing, was a hyped kid when he came to Europe, and looks good on the pitch, definitely like a goal scorer.

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNxT5neb6Ms

However, it's still a very good rate and I doubt he's going to keep it up. For comparison, Messi had 25.2, Aguero 16.5 (last season alone). I doubt, if you give him their number of chances, that his conversion rate stayed above Aguero's. That would mean that he overachieved this season and adding the same number of chances next season, might balance his accounts by scoring at rate of 10%, or just 6 NPG's. On the other hand, he could get much more scoring chances if he plays for Liverpool, so he could replicate that 0.44 NPG90 if he'd manage just a decent conversion rate of inside the box.

Not sure if he would get more chances inside the box at Liverpool, because Liverpool shoots a lot from outside the box (the most in the PL). To profit from Bacca or Rolan, they need to get into the box. Rolan's never scored from outside the box (which is why I ignored those shots in my calculations). Rolan's total conversion rate from last season, 16.9% (without penalties), is totally tenable albeit quite good. His career (French League, EL, Copa) open play conversion rate from inside the box is 13.3%, but I'd say this is badly skewed by his early career blank seasons in Europe (he scored 0.5 goals per match in Uruguay before coming to Europe) and it is entirely plausible that he could have something close to that 17% conversion rate if he stopped shooting from distance.

Violence has been steadily declining throughout the history of civilization. People have never lived in a safer more peaceful world than us today, and it is improving still. Or so says Steven pinker, very convincingly, in his book better angels of our nature.

I've had many a religious debate on here before 😉

When you believe something like that so deeply, it can drive good people to do wicked things. Most people are fine of course, and religious people are mostly fine. But the suicide bombing community is entirely religious, the child genital mutilation community is entirely religious...

I actually have no problem with militating atheism as such, if it was just that, just defending atheism against religions.

But there's a huge amount of pure geopolitical conflicts where Hitch just supports his chosen side, no matter how false arguments he has to resort to. Atheism and freedom are nothing but a vehicles for these ends, no matter how much Hitch himself believes in what he says.

This may be all fun and games to Hitchens and his opponents in TV discussions, but when hundreds of thousands of people are killed or end up refugees, these are not light matters. One should be pretty critical about information he gets and check it, in every case. And this last point applies to Hitch's and his fellow's "science" rants as well.

Poverty has a cure, that has been proven to work. It's called the 'empowerment of women'. Giving them choice over who they have sex with, birth control etc... Unfortunately many religions suppress this.

Great bit of critical thinking. I read an awesome essay by Pierre rykmans aka Simon leys that rebutted it really elegantly though. My This was me agreeing with you on religion being the obstacle. Religious nutters wont be endorsing women to be in control, nor will the endorse better/higher education as that may lead to questions being asked as ppl gets more educated. Poverty is also someting that religious nutters feed from.
It is all connected, religion being the hub

Can be very dangerous yeah. Belief is powerful. Yet violence has steadily declined and given most of the world's population are religious ergo violence in religion is declining also.
There's some bad parts of human nature that I'm sure would manifest through another ideology in a world without religion. South park comes to mind with the future where theres no religion but atheists and agnostics are at war with each other 🙂

Simply not true. I know your joking slightly with the South Park reference, but certain beliefs are inherently violent, and some are inherently benign. Jainism extremism isn't going to be causing problems any time soon.

Yet, with all that's going on today, + a bombing in Somalia, a car bomb in Iraq yesterday, executions in Iraq yesterday, people killed in Yemen on the 23rd, as well as suicide bombers in Syria, a 12 year old suicide bomber in Nigeria on the 23rd, Islamists killing 2 in the Phillipines, and it goes on and on and on.

                        Religion is the primary motivator.

Yes I do agree, to an extent. I am no religious apologist. Islam is a big problem right now. And it's specific doctrines in the Koran/hadith that are the problem not just their "interpretation"
Its a dangerous thing to believe in an afterlife and a violent dated book that contains "absolute truths"
However Christianity moderated over centuries and I think that's the process that Islam is going through as we speak. It's a long any bloody process.

No you have it completely backwards. You are looking at small periods of time. He is looking at the history of humanity civilization. There has been a steady decline. In face even the last century that included the two world wars the decline continued overall. I urge you to read the book though. It's an incredible piece of work universally praised by many of the greatest thinkers of our time. I can't do it justice in posts on ffs but it's a must read.

Yeah and I don't think people realize just how massive a threat that is to our species.
As for how bad we are, yes we are capable of horrible things often driven by greed. We are also capable of love, compassion and empathy. Yes we are capable of mass extinction of species, we are also capable of understanding that and changing our behaviour to stop animals suffering. (Pinker I referenced above actually believes the next step in moral evolution is animal rights) Yes we are capable of destroying this planet, we are also capable of loving it and protecting it.

It's almost always blokes that are the cause of these atrocities. Has been for thousands of years. When was the last time we heard of a woman starting this sort of madness?

Sadly for us, the male half of the human race sucks sometimes.

Women tend do other horrible things. I can remember many cases where women killed their own children in cold blod. Just to name a few on top of my head, the US mother that put her children in their car, loced the doors and pushed it into a lake, in Finland last year a women were cought for something and it turned out in and around her house they found 7 dead children of different agaes. Kanada had a similar case not long ago with a woman killed her babies.
Then there are the case of female suicide bombers, women have been known to finance terror attacks on several occasions. There have been several female serialkillers.
The list is endless, but for sure men are in a higher%age when it comes to nutjobs

There are many women serial killers etc, but speaking generally, men are a bigger cause of violence. Testosterone is linked with aggression.

I need to point out that as shocking and ugly the violence by Islamic extremists is does the suffering really compare to the massive bombing campaign of Iraq and the like?
Those milataru campaigns aren't driven by religious dogma yet they are much more devastating. That's the supposed good guys, driven by political ideology, greed, power and fear. Hitchens was a passionate supporter of the illegal and immoral Iraq war much to my disappointment as I'm a huge fan of his work

Is anybody starting without Chelsea defender? first 6 fixtures are not favourable. Saints have the best first 6 games in my opinion, will consider go with double Saints defense(or even tripple if Stakelenburg is nailed), don't see a point of benching Ivan or Terry for most of first 6...

The thing with Chelsea is they seem just as likely to keep clean sheets against the best teams than they do the lesser sides. If they set out to not lose the bigger fixtures there's a great chance of them achieving that, and that starts from the back.

They kept clean sheets in 40% of their games against the top 6 last season as opposed to the 47% they averaged over the course of the season.

Chelsea defenders should be fixture-proof and their opening spell does not worry me in the slightest.

Ivan is a luxury item at the start of FPL

You're right, the question is whether he is a luxury worth having, and for me Ivanovic is very much on my radar. He is one of those you have to commit to from the off though, probably gonna have to use two transfers to bring him in if he starts off like a house on fire.

But would you buy Myhill at 4.5m, knowing that he will lose his place to Foster in a few months? We avoid keeper transfers like the plague, but in this case it may be worth it...

It depends on the price of

            a) other keepers (Panti and Ruddy)
            b) the other WBA defenders

If Dawson is 5.0 I'd be tempted to pay the extra 0.5 for the attacking threat and less need of a transfer

WBA also linked with Hennessey which may throw a spanner in the works

Hoping Ruddy + Myhill comes in at 9.0, I wouldn't say it's the best rotation, but at least it's a rotating combo for 9.0 and Ruddy will be a decent safety net if/when Foster returns to the WBA XI

Definitely. It's only 4 points for a transfer (if not free) and he should easily make that up by the time Foster is back.

Foster is out until end September for the surgery to heal. After that he has to regain full fitness then match sharpness. Wouldn't surprise me if he's not back in the line-up before Xmas.

You really are unusually sensitive about your club.

By the way, you lose your bet: anybody, say IE who is a Liverpool fan (aren't you?), can affirm I'm not a Liverpool fan. Hope you didn't bet your house on it.

And now that we're at it, to your question "what do shots inside the box actually tell us", oh, they tell a lot. The shots inside the box ratio correlates generally, as you can see also from the table I posted, very well with the scoring numbers and the final positions. Shots on target ratio correlates well to, but it goes wrong when teams resort a lot to shooting from distance (Liverpool, Tottenham) or when teams reduce opponent to shots from distance and get to very close distance before shooting (Mönchegladbach). Moreover, it has more fluctuation due to chance, whereas shots inside the box ratio tells the raw material to which that chance adds its effect.

You say "Yes Spurs defense is poor at the moment, but it didn't affect them that much because their attack made up for it," but had you read the table well, it was the ratio between the shots inside the box for and shots inside the box against. Which means your attack had been taken into account and it reads that you create very little relative to how much you concede good chances. Which means that your attack does not make up for it. Kane's and Lloris's immense performances are what makes up for it, and nothing else (well, Chadli was an overachiever, for sure, but it matters a bit less as his numbers are smaller).

Improvement is only possible if you admit the realities, which for you guys I wish your team lead does better than your fans do.

As a Chelsea fan we tend to have a lot of hate towards Arsenal, United, Spurs & Liverpool. City haven't been a rival long enough to deserve our hatred. I'd say we tend to hate Spurs the most, then Liverpool.

Personally though, MK Dons or Liverpool.

Do you think this team will be possible for 100m?

          Foster - Myhill
          Azpilicueta - van Aanholt - Morgan - Naughton - 4.0
          Hazard - Silva - Atsu/Ritchie - Firmino - 4.5
          Rooney - Aguero - 5.5

I'm not sure on the Atsu or Ritchie, I think Atsu has more ability than Ritchie but it's a toss-up. Also think I'll pick Firmino over Henderson as he's likely to play up front at some point.

Anyway this is what I'm guessing the pricing will come in at, and is there anybody out their you think will fill in the 4.0, 4.5, 5.5 roles?

          5.0, 4.5
          6.0, 4.5, 4.5, 5.0, 4.0
          10.5, 9.5, 5.5, 8.5, 4.5

            Hazard 11.5- Silva 10 - Atsu/Ritchie 6.5 - Firmino 9 - 4.5
            Rooney 10.5 - Aguero 12.5 - 5.5

You think Myhill/PvA will come in at 5? I also think Azpilicueta will only be a 6.0, as if he's a 6.5 Ivanovic, Terry, Cahill will all be 7/7.5. I've probably under-valued Hazard aswell, 11.5 seems more realistic.

I reckon Cahill 6.5m because of Zouma, Terry will be 7m and Ivan will be 7.5m.

I reckon Myhill will come in at 5 because he could very well be first choice, and PvA's good end to the season will see him hit with 5m, as opposed to 4.5m for other Sunderland defenders.

Hmm perhaps, the chelsea defenders I agree with but due to Luis I think both him and Azpilicueta will start at 6.0. I can't see both Myhill and Foster being 5.0, so I think either way around one of them will be a 4.5. And PvA perhaps but hopefully not!

            Ritchie, a 4.5 mid and a 5.5 striker

            seems risky to me

I think having a cheap 5.5 striker allows me to quickly move on to one of the cheap strikers who starts well, i.e. Naismith, Ulloa etc. Where as if I have a big striker I wouldn't make the transfer.

What I mean is, English players are over-priced. Harry Kane £50m? Sterling £50m? These prices are a joke, you can get non-british players for half the price that are 3 times as good.

Gets to my list too with West Ham's great starting fixtures. Only thing that makes me doubt is that he seemed to originally use West Ham's bid to negotiate himself a better contract at Marseille and stated that he doesn't want to leave, so he might be motivated by money only in which case this can be a big flop. He has a history of being a moody player.

Yeah he hasn't been a regular in the French team. I think he might struggle to adapt to the physical game in the EPL. I don't know if he will have that many assists at West Ham with the strikers they have...

              expected price?

think he will perform at West Ham?

              Last 5 seasons (league only):
              14/15 - 36 Apps, 7 Goals, 21 Assists = 36 / 28
              13/14 - 36 Apps, 8 Goals, 6 Assists = 36 / 14
              12/13 - 38 Apps, 12 Goals, 18 Assists = 38 / 30
              11/12 - 33 Apps, 6 Goals, 8 Assists = 33 / 14
              10/11 - 33 Apps, 13 Goals, 6 Assists = 33 / 19

In your minds, who do you all have as must-haves in your GW1 team? For me it's Rooney, at least 1, maybe 2 Liverpool MIDs (Henderson/Milner/Firmino/Sterling/Lallana/Coutinho), and a Chelsea DEF.

If not I'll get Pantilimon, or maybe Stekelenburg or Myhill depending on Foster/Forster injury news and pricing.
