Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Jack Grealish

The defining feature of Tim Sherwood’s managerial stint at Tottenham Hotspur was his willingness to promote youth – bringing talented youngsters like Nabil Bentaleb to the fore. Sherwood maintained that trend on his arrival at Villa Park, as the precocious talents of midfielder Jack Grealish were handed the opportunity to impress.

Grealish’s displays played a key role in Villa’s end of season form which saw them escape relegation and book their place in the FA Cup Final. Villa fans and Fantasy managers alike are now expecting more from Sherwood’s latest protege.

The 19-year-old attacking midfielder was afforded his first Premier League start under Sherwood and has since gone on to excite with a composure and confidence that belies his years. Speaking to the press last month, Sherwood insisted it was no surprise that Grealish had made such an instant impact, given that he’d earmarked him as one to watch during his spell as Tottenham’s youth team coach:

“He’s always been like that ever since I’ve seen him play from 16 years of age in youth teams. He likes to show everyone that he’s a top player. He makes the difference. But you don’t really get the credit for it until you do it in front of 39,000 fans.”

Sherwood clearly has a “project” to work on in Grealish; an array of off-the-field concerns have surfaced as a result of recent alleged incidents. If the Villa boss can quell these issues and nurture his undoubted abilities, Grealish could well emerge as a handy Fantasy asset next term. Here’s why…

Key Factors

    • Having forged his way into the Villains’ starting line-up for their 3-3 draw against Queens Park Rangers in Gameweek 31, Grealish impressed enough to cement that berth for the subsequent six matches. Although Grealish was tested in a central role, Sherwood primarily deployed him as the most advanced left-sided player in a 4-3-3 set-up, with Christian Benteke leading the line and Charles N’Zogbia or Gabriel Agbonlahor occupying the opposite flank. In spite of this attacking assignment, Grealish is expected to retain his midfielder classification in next season’s Fantasy Premier League, which bodes well for his prospects in the budget bracket.

    • Notwithstanding his influential displays during Aston Villa’s run-in (particularly in their 3-2 defeat to Manchester City), a single assist across 822 minutes should ensure that Grealish’s value stays in the budget bracket next term. Having started last season at 4.5, he looks likely to rise to around 5.5 – a scenario that could entice a healthy number of Fantasy managers to snap him up as their fifth midfielder.

    • One of Sherwood’s chief assignments upon taking the reins at Villa Park was to get them scoring again, following an eight-match winless streak that harvested just one goal under Paul Lambert. Having netted just 12 times in their first 25 Gameweeks under the Scot, the West Midlanders went on to chalk up 19 goals in the final 13 fixtures – on a par with United and Spurs and surpassed by just five outfits. With the emphasis very much on attack, then, there’s every reason for being optimistic that Villa could offer us value for money in the final third of the pitch next time around.

    • Although Grealish served up a paucity of Fantasy returns, his underlying stats improved considerably upon Sherwood’s arrival. The youngster’s minutes per shot quickened from 84.7 to 62.6, whilst his frequency of key passes also sped up, from 63.5 minutes to 44.7. Indeed, as mentioned in our recent members article on Sherwood’s Villa, Grealish’s average of 1.8 chances created per appearance under the new manager was more than any team-mate, whilst he sat joint-fifth in terms of goal threat, averaging 1.2 attempts per league outing.

    • Villa’s opening set of fixtures also look promising for the youngster. Sherwood’s side face trips to Bournemouth, Palace and Leicester in the first ten Gameweeks and with home encounters against Sunderland, West Brom, Stoke and Swansea also on their agenda, the Midlands side square up to just three (MUN, liv, che) of last season’s top six over that period.

Was reading an old interview with Sir Geoffrey Boycott. Felt compelled to post this nugget ...

When was the last time you bought a round?

When did anyone last buy a drink for me? Never, that's when. We've got a culture in this country where anyone who doesn't go out drinking with the lads is automatically viewed with suspicion. If I didn't go into the bar, why should I stump up for others?

I think we watched that film on TV years ago. It really freaked my wife out. I don't think I was really paying much attention to it because I was wondering why she was so scared afterwards.

I'm pretty sure I might have walked in on the film halfway through and then been half looking at it and probably half doing other stuff because all I can remember was that it was about a spaceship and half of it was stuck in 'hell'I think.

I think Coleman is better offensively, Clyne is better defensively.

Not much between them either way. Clyne is younger, and Coleman would probably be more expensive, so you'd say Clyne would be the better signing.

I wouldn't be comfortable with Valdes in goal. Wish we sign a top class GK. I think Carrick needs to start when fit. He doesn't just do the defensive work but sets the rhythm for United and gets the team ticking. Young deserves some game time as well after the season he just had. Rest looks good. 😛

As an Arsenal fan, I don't think he is a better CDM than Schneiderlin, better CM than Cazorla/Ramsey or a better CAM than Ozil, so wonder why Wenger would want to indulge in such a mindless transfer in midfield. Especially when he allegedly turned down Schneiderlin.

Really hope it does not happen.

        Sanchez Ozil Ramsey

If Cazorla gets injured, Ramsey will play. If Ramsey gets injured, Wilshere will play. If Wilshere gets injured, Cazorla will be fit by then...

All I am saying that there are a lot of other real spaces in the team, and CM is not one of them...especially worth a £30m transfer for a ill-behaved 28-year old.

I'm not saying you should buy 11 new players, but why would you keep someone on the bench after you bought him just because the guy in his position played well 2 season ago. If the rumor is true, he should have the same opportunity as Cazorla or Coquelin or anyone else in that position.

Ozil because he did not have a good CAM in the entire squad then, and Sanchez was our only fit winger when we bought him (I see Ox as a CM).

We've seen how Silva really thrives as a no 10, and Aguero/Bony could potentially be a deadly pair, so could they not tweak the formation to a 4-3-1-2 from a 4-2-3-1 to suit the team more?

    -------------------------------------Hart
    --Zabaleta----Kompany----------------Demichelis-----Kolarov
    -------Fernandinho-----------Yaya------------(new CDM)
    -------------------------------------Silva
    ---------Aguero---------------------------------------------Bony

Don't think lack of width should be a problem, with Zabaleta/Kolarov both very potent attacking-wise, and Silva can drift wide when he wants.

    Just an idea.

Decent idea aye. I still think City playing a second striker is detrimental to the team as a whole, simply because Aguero operates best as a lone forward, more space for him to operate where he is so deadly.

Yes, I have been a fan of Bony's link-up play as well. Something which strikers like Lukaku lack.
City will be foolish not to utilise all that potential.

Bony will be used a lot more next season. City want to compete and do well in four competitions so plenty of matches to go around.

Its an idea anyway. It could have potential depending on the situation but is there a risk of Bony and Aguero being isolated up there and getting very little service? Not sure Id opt for it.

Your right Aguero is said to play better by himself up front. It depends on the opposition though. For parked buses, 442 should be played. For difficult away matches 451 should be the set up to add more strength to the midfield.

Not sure...The thing is that as a mid pick his potential stock is massive. He had a lean spell last season when he seemed to tire a little....I think Wenger may manage him better this season with a full squad and avoid that....so no CC cup or early stage FAcup.

He is a rare beast of a player that inspires everybody around them to play above and beyond themselves and there are very few of those. Stoichkov, Cantona and the like....I think there may be more to come from Sanchez.

    Juventus keen on Oscar...

I'm 90% certain they won't manage him, but if they somehow did, what an absolutely brilliant signing it would have been for them. They've mostly moved to a 4-3-1-2 from a 3-5-2 last season, and Oscar would be a brilliant upgrade on Pereyra behind the two strikers.

Bit aspirational! But we know Haz, Alexis and Kun are 3 of the 6. Cheap at the back and you can add Costa and Kane, Roo or Silva.

you need a combination of the big hitters and the cheapish bargains such as kane, berahino last season. but at the same time I wouldn't go for say 6 big hitters and 5 Watford def, Norwich def/mid etc. what I like to do is pick my best team possible if money was no object and work backwards from there so courtois ivan terry cahill koscieny
      hazard sanchez mata ramsey
kun costa and then replace some of the big stars until you are under budget, so mata out mane in etc. last season was a bit easy once you realised kane was prolific and the saints defence hardly let any goals in. everyone ended up with a very similar team

Ivans big ass would support a lot but I won't be able to afford him. Not fussed anyway with their fixtures. Think we've a great opportunity to rotate cheapies given their fixtures (Bou, Sun, Nor, Wha, Sou).

yeah you cant go far wrong with them 3 players obviously injury permitting. only that worrys me is its rare top players replicate last years great form the following season ie coleman, ramsey, sturridge 2 years ago, yaya scoring 20 odd then only getting half that last season, RVP scoring loads 2 years in a row then only getting 12 n 10 the next 2 seasons etc

Did a bit of totting up from last year's scores to see if rotating 4.5/4.5 GKs actually works, using the classic SUN/NEW example. Question is, is it worth the extra 0.5, or should you just go with 1 playing 4.5 keeper?
    Results are as follows:
Maximum combined points (choosing the highest score each week retrospectively, from Panti, Krul, Mannone, Alnwick and Elliot) was 189 points (4.97 PPG).
Score from choosing the easiest fixture (i.e. a planned rotation) was 134 points.
    Total SUN score was 154.
    Total NEW score was 111.
Of course this is a small sample, but I would conclude that clean sheets aren't as predictable as we think. Personally i'll be buying one cheapish, playing keeper and playing him every week.

I got Myhil and Pants wrong a few times in the latter stages ( sure many did) which was a major frustration.
Having 1 playing keeper means less headaches , but still not sure which way I will go

Obviously depends on pricing but I like two 4.5 options incase of injuries and you have twice the chance of selecting a decent one 🙂

Burnley's 150 points from Heaton & Gilks was the best single club combination available for 4.5/4.0.

For 4.5/4.5, Pantilimon & Heaton, with Pantilimon ahead of Heaton whenever possible, would have scored 173.

But relying on a single 4.5m goalkeeper to maintain his form and avoid injury all season does carry some risk. Who would have foreseen at the start that Heaton would have been so successful? Or that he would score 20 points in the two game-weeks that Pantilimon missed towards the end?

Although Heaton's 150 points was only exceeded by one other goalkeeper (Fabianski, who got 151 but cost 5.0m), he flew very much under the radar and his final ownership was only 5.5%, way down in 14th position among goalkeepers.

I tried it for a bit last season - backfired (Gerrard and Baines) wasn't patient enough. Might stick in Lukaku for penos - Eve average 6-7 penos per year - could justify his cost.
