Fixture Analysis – Rotation Pairs – Leicester and Swansea

After starting our series of rotation articles with a look at the basic principles involved, we now turn our attentions to the most favourable pairings for the season ahead. To get this underway, we take a look at what’s on offer with Leicester and Swansea.

THE FIXTURES

With Swansea keeping 13 clean sheets last season and Leicester ending the last campaign with five shut-outs in their final seven matches, this pairing looks particularly enticing. Over the first 20 Gameweeks, there are only two troublesome weekends, with Leicester at home to Man United in Gameweek 14, while Swansea travel to Liverpool. Then in Gameweek 16, the Foxes host the champions Chelsea, with Swansea facing Manchester City on their travels.

Those are the only two instances where the Swansea/Leicester rotation will definitely face one of last season’s top five over that period, however, with the remaining run handing us 12 very kind-looking home encounters (SUN, NEW, sun, bou, AVL, EVE, sot, nor, STO, CPL, wba, WAT, BOU, LEI, WHM, WBA, cpl, BOU) until we’re given the chance to freshen up our squads with the winter Wildcard.

It’s worth remembering, though, that Garry Monk’s side kept seven of their 13 clean sheets on the road last season, which strengthens the theory that we should play to the fixture instead of remaining strictly loyal to the home/away rotation. Furthermore, Leicester’s surprise sacking of Nigel Pearson also generates uncertainty over their line-up and resilience for the season ahead.

While we won’t be focussing too much on the second half of the campaign with winter Wildcards available, it’s worth pointing out that the Leicester and Swansea pairing is also particularly useful between Gameweeks 20 and 31 (SUN, WAT, STO, wba, CPL, SOT, NOR, WBA, NOR, NEW, AVL). Indeed, once again there would be just two occasions (Gameweeks 36 and 38) where you’d have to face one of last year’s top five in the second half of the season.

Alternatively, Norwich and West Ham offer a good rotation with Swansea for 34 Gameweeks, with the Hammers’ favourable home fixtures against West Brom and Stoke in Gameweeks 14 and 16 very helpful, considering the tricky clashes offered up by the Leicester/Swansea combination. Unfortunately, the Foxes offer a good rotation with Chelsea and Southampton for 34 Gameweeks but, aside from the Saints keeper spot in light of Fraser Forster’s injury, they may well be too pricey to rotate.

DEFENCE

Leicester
The Foxes backline should throw up plenty of Fantasy options, starting in goal with Kasper Schmeichel. The Danish international missed a large chunk of last season with a broken foot, but still chalked up 83 points in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and looks worthy of strong consideration for the new season, with save points looking guaranteed.

At the back, skipper Wes Morgan ended the previous campaign in sensational form, averaging six points per appearance over the Foxes final 11 matches, thanks to two goals, a pair of assists and six clean sheets. Morgan and Robert Huth, who has now joined Leicester on a permanent deal, led all defenders for goal attempts from inside the box over the final six Gameweeks, with seven apiece.

Jeffrey Schlupp was also a profitable budget defender for many Fantasy managers last season thanks to his out-of-position potential down the left flank, although his place looks under serious threat from new arrival Christian Fuchs. The Austria captain arrives on the back of eight goals and 30 assists in 136 outings for Schalke and, like Schlupp, is versatile enough to play at left-back or as a wing-back, though there’s real uncertainty as to whether the new manager will look to replicate Pearson’s 3-4-1-2 set-up. Regarded as a set-piece specialist, it’s possible that Fuchs could come in at 5.0 in FPL, though there’d be no real surprise if he, along with the rest of the Foxes defence, started at 4.5, given that they had the fourth-worst defence in 2014/15.

Swansea
The highest scoring goalkeeper in FPL last season with 151 points, Lukasz Fabianski will no doubt be on Fantasy managers’ radars once more. Again, save points look secure here – Fabianski produced more than any stopper in the previous campaign and resultantly finished 33 points clear of any defensive team-mate. There’s an argument to suggest he could come in at 5.5, then, though if he remains at 5.0, the Pole is bound to attract investors.

Ashley Williams was the highest scoring Swans defender in FPL last term with 118 points. The Wales international’s tally of 15 bonus points in 2014/15 was more than John Terry (14), for example, and bettered by only six other defenders. With new addition Franck Tabanou possibly set to share playing time with Neil Taylor on the left of the back four, Federico Fernandez and right-back Kyle Naughton may be stronger targets initially.

Naughton was a terrific budget option following his January move from Tottenham before picking up an ankle injury at the beginning of April. Although Fernandez didn’t register any attacking returns in his 28 appearances, the Argentina international did manage 13 goal attempts from inside the box, more than Jan Vertonghen and Laurent Koscielny, while he also racked up 11 bonus points. As our recent Scout Report indicates, though, Tabanou is far more attack-minded than Taylor and could be the best bet in the long run, providing he can nail down a regular role.

With the Swansea defence likely to come in at 5.0, this combination with Leicester should offer you a rotation option for 9.5 to 10.0.

ATTACKING OPTIONS

Leicester
Midfielders Riyad Mahrez and Marc Albrighton had their moments last term, particularly during the final months of the season, but consistency eluded the pair for the majority of the campaign. Frustratingly, having cemented their starting roles in the final few fixtures under Pearson, they may have to prove themselves all over again when the new manager is appointed and it may take the entirety of the pre-season schedule before we have a clearer picture.

Albrighton registered three double-digit hauls playing as a wing-back over the final five Gameweeks and his delivery from the right proved a key factor in the Foxes survival. Mahrez ended last season in a central support berth behind a front two but there’s a fear he may suffer from a change in tactical approach – nonetheless, if Leicester can maintain the momentum gained from their great escape, this duo may offer value and are likely to come in at a maximum 5.5, with 5.0 perhaps more likely.

In attack, Leonardo Ulloa and Jamie Vardy offered great value last season, starting out at 5.5 and 5.0 respectively in FPL, and both should come in at 6.0 or under again. Ulloa racked up 130 points, while Vardy notched five goals and 12 assists over the campaign. It remains to be seen where new signing Shinji Okazaki will fit in, but given the Japanese international scored 12 goals for Mainz in the Bundesliga last season, he will be one to watch. Reports over the last few days linking Leicester with a move for Charlie Austin merely muddies the waters further and could deter some from initially investing in the Foxes attack.

Swansea
There are options aplenty in the Swans midfield, although the main men will be a little too pricey in terms of budget rotation targets. Gylfi Sigurdsson and new signing Andre Ayew, who is likely to be classified as a midfielder, should come in at around 7.0 to 7.5 in FPL. As we saw in Gameweek 1 last season, where Sigurdsson produced 13 points at Old Trafford, the Icelandic international is capable of delivering the goods regardless of fixture.

Our attentions could turn to Ki Sung-yeung or Jonjo Shelvey as cheaper alternatives. Ki scored eight goals last season and particularly thrived when Monk changed to a 4-1-2-1-2 formation during the final third of last season. Shelvey managed three goals and six assists, although discipline was an issue, picking up eight yellow cards and one red. One concern for Fantasy managers is the possible rotation in the Swans midfield, with wide players Jefferson Montero, Wayne Routledge and Nathan Dyer also vying for spots, particularly if Monk reverts to his usual 4-2-3-1 system. Jack Cork seems to have emerged as the favoured defensive midfielder, so Ki and Shelvey could end up battling for a place in the starting XI.

Monk’s rotation should be less of an issue up front, though. Bafetimbi Gomis looks likely to remain the first-choice, with new boy Eder offering a back-up option, though he may even partner Gomis up top should the Swans boss revert to a two-man frontline on occasion. Given that Gomis should set us back around 7.0 to 7.5 in FPL, though, he’s certainly a little too pricey to utilise as a rotation option for Fantasy managers. Having scored against the likes of Arsenal, United and City last term, the Frenchman – who netted five times in his final six appearances of 2014/15 – hinted at his fixture-proof potential after the departure of Wilfried Bony and may well prove a value option for our three-man frontlines.

Will be too expensive for y liking, but definitely one to consider if Leicester starts the season as they ended the one before.

Doesn't look a winner to me, at least as far as defensive rotations go - except if the prices come in surprisingly low.

We won just 3 of our last 21 games! That is more than the 'end of the season' and Allardyce has to take some responsibility for that!

Collins was in the side for 5 out of 9 clean sheets, and provided an own goal to boot. Not to mention a penalty conceded, a red and several yellows.

As for BFS, he lost the plot comprehensively at Christmas, and most of us as well.

He also dropped Sakho several times, and appointed Nolan club captain.

He also lost the dressing room.

Yeah I wouldn't have said Big Sam is a Pulis type that shores up defences. West Ham only really kept clean sheets at home to teams who were really struggling in terms of confidence.

If they were keeping teams like Spurs, Everton, Liverpool, Swansea, Stoke out consistently then I'd say Allardyce was big on defence.

I do think he is a good prem manager and would pretty much guarantee Leicester staying up. Lennon is a bit of an unknown as an EPL manager and I'm not sure Hiddink would have a quality he is used to at big clubs and international teams he's managed.

He's definitely not Pulis but in the context of the talent he had in defence his record at keeping cleanies over the course of a season is pretty good

                  12 clean sheets 2006/07 (Bolton)
2 clean sheets (Newcastle until 9/1/08)
9 clean sheets 2008/09 (Blackburn from 16/12/08 only)
                  12 clean sheet 2009/10 (Blackburn)
                  8 clean sheets 2010/11 (Blackburn)
17 clean sheets 2011/12 (West Ham - Championship)
12 clean sheet 2012/13 (West Ham)
14 clean sheet 2013/14 (West Ham)
9 clean sheets 2014/15 (West Ham)

It's really only Newcastle where he failed dismally

Also consider that Allardyce spent around only £5m on his defence over four years. Most of that went on Cresswell. Remarkable CS returns in the first three seasons for the outlay, imo.

Would a rotation outside the normal defence/defence work for these two?

    Defender/mid or
    Defender/3rd striker

Or do you think that rotations always have to be the same positions?

Worth a look when the prices come out then Doosra. I don't see these two throwing up many nailed on bargains.
It may be a case of playing both 1 in 3 for those going the old Uber defence to fit the very pricey big hitting mids and strikers this year.

No. The issue is only 4 for a goal, plus mids get 1 for a clean sheet also, on top of 5 for a goal.

Also, strikers are not racking up enough baps.

Definitely an interesting transfer if it happens but considering he turned down PSG last year I'd imagine he'll be aiming a bit higher up the table and want ECL football.

If Schneiderlein goes to Arsenal I could see him at Man UTD

I think they were right about Sunderland at the time - they have singed that young lad Matthews from Celtic the other day. Chelsea only confirmed Falcao and a couple of days ago too. So that would have made five hahaha, probably just the misery guts local press up there writing negatively biased articles since Ashley banned them all.

It is disappointing after what he said on TV that we could punch above our weight in the transfer market. Hopefully this Wijnaldum will the first one to prove what he thinks we are capable of. Getting him could help persuade a bit more talent that we finally have some ambition.

they had a lot of issues last year though.
3 new players in the back 5 (or non-regulars from previous year) and were knitting together.

Work cross site in Cardiff and Swansea, so get some pain eased there at least!

Still have a habit of wearing a Cardiff top / Hoody / tie (not all at once) to the Swansea Office when I can 🙂 Adds to the fun.

But since i'm not a "i hate Swansea" type of fan it's banter mostly that I get and sympathy comes out too. Ultimately I want the jacks to do well unless it negatively affects us, but shhhhhhh, don't tell them that 🙂

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

When the FPL game opens which player prices will you look at first? And what are your genuine hopes for the big hitters' price tags.

Is it sensible to look at getting in premium players with great fixtures from the off. Or, as with Hazard, whose first few fixtures are not ideal, is it a case of class being permanent.

    1. Holmes
      • 10 Years

Cedric, Mane, Coutinho, Williams, Fabianski, Cech are some of them

Probably the most important are the 4.0 defenders and the 4.5 mids. Those are the guys who make the big hitters possible, really.

But probably Ivanovic for me. Hazard started pretty slow last season.

These are my initial thoughts based on first four fixtures

      Best first four fixtures

      Sunderland
      Villa
      Leicester
      Bournemouth

      Southampton

      Arsenal
      Manchester United

      Fixture proof*
      Chelsea
      Man City

      *Debatable

This leads me to think that I’ll be looking at Arsenal and ManU for my heavy hitters. ManC and Chelsea as well but perhaps just a Che defender, Hazard and one ManC option.

Southampton to provide a good mid price option

The rest look good for bench fodder and cheap fifth mid/reasonably priced good third striker material

This means Rooney, Mata, Sanchez/Ramsey/Walcott, Arsenal defender, plus a 4m option from the above’s defence will be the first I look for.

Southampton’s Mane is another I’ll be looking out for.

In addition an attacker from Bournemouth as well.

In a month from now will just check what the template team is building up to be.
Then I will select 10-11 out of those and then use the prices to manage the rest of the 4-5 players, presumably the lower priced ones.

      Basically sorting by prices.

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe is ready to smash the club's transfer record by paying £14million for QPR striker Charlie Austin, according to reports in the Sun on Sunday.

The south-coast club have already broken their record once this summer with the signing of left-back Tyrone Mings from Ipswich, but reports state they could be set to beat it once more.

How many of the 2015 England Women's World Cup bronze medal team can you name?

I can't name the Celtic European cup winning team from 67 but know they are legends.
      your point?

I'm talking about the England national team.

A legend: "an extremely famous or notorious person, especially in a particular field." - yet they're probably forgotten already.

they are "extremely famous or notorious person, especially in a particular field",
Within the field of Women's football they are legends.

There are legends in many fields that are not well known outside of them, but they are legends by your definition.

From 1966, about 5 without googling: Gordon Banks, Bobby Moore, Jackie Charlton, Bobby Charlton, Geoff Hurst.

Can't name any of the 2015 England Women though.

'an extremely famous or notorious person, especially in **a particular field**' - In women's football, they will be legends. Just as the men have been in men's football. Those that aren't interested in men's football would be hard pressed to list any of the men. Just as those who have no interest in women's football will be hard pressed to remember the women. But in their field, women's football, they will be legends. Yes, they will be legends to a more limited number of people because the sport has a limited following but they are legends all the same.

We are just all too keen to present men's football as the only football, because it has enjoyed a monopoly on the sport for over a century.

"...because it has enjoyed a monopoly on the sport for over a century..."

Not because the men are technically, tactically and athletically so much better that it's hard to recognise it as the same sport at elite level?

By defining "women's football" rather than "football" as "their field" you are effectively saying that they are different games.

Having said that, Steph Houghton was impressive. Reminds me of JT on whom she has obviously modelled elements of her approach to the game.

Men's sports generally attract far more spectators than women's sports (although there are some minor sports such as beach volleyball in which the women's game attracts more interest, for obvious reasons).

One reason is that more men than women are interested in watching sport and consider it to be something worth taking seriously. And another is that men are physically stronger and capable of reaching levels that women cannot.

However, football is now the most popular participatory sport for women, and would have been more popular much sooner if the FA had not banned it for many years. Although the women's game is slower and you won't see much hard tackling in it and mistakes do occur (they occur in the men's game too!), some of the players are quite skilful and have a good grasp of tactics.

I was very impressed with Mark Sampson, the England coach, and expect him to be in the running for Coach of the Year.

Yeah, I'm not saying at all that it isn't a good sport.

Just pointing out to Lucy that she can't have it both ways.

You're assuming that I'm being anti-women's football. I've got nothing against them.

My point is just that they will be quickly forgotten, unfortunately. Which is a contradiction to being dubbed legends.

The England Women players who will be remembered will be those who made the most significant contributions to the World Cup as a whole, not just those who happened to play in the bronze medal match. So Fran Kirby might be remembered for scoring our first goal in the competition, even though she missed the last few matches.

As Lucy says, those who follow Women's football will remember quite a few of them, but the majority of the general public won't.

Their bronze medal can't compare to the men's success in 1966, but if they actually win the World Cup one year, then that would arguably be a greater achievement than the men's near miss in 1990.

I read somewhere recently that women's football is now the fourth biggest participatory sport in this country, and that it may soon move up to second place (behind men's football, of course).

I expect to see Lucy Bronze among the contenders for this year's SPOTY, but she is unlikely to win it. They are also likely to feature more frequently on A Question of Sport. The attendances at Women's League matches should increase, and some might even be televised.

Only a handful of players are fixture proof for the whole season, so it wouldn't matter what price they were as I'd always be likely to pick two or three of them - I think it's sensible to do this to give you almost guaranteed captaincy returns.

The prices I'll be keen to look at are more the lower end of the market (less than £7m) to scount out the hidden gems, particularly in midfield!

So who do you class as 'fixture proof' out of interest?

      Presumably Aguero, Hazard. ....

From last season I'd have said Hazard, Aguero, Silva and Terry. I'd be surprised if this changes alot this time around. Maybe add an Arsenal player there but don't know which one as their returns are so spread around their front 5.

Obviously none of us know yet, but I really think Depay could be for Man Utd.

This will be my 4th season playing the fpl game. My highest finish was 9000 & something. Never put much consideration into nailed on players, I've always punted on a few new signings & been misled by potential. This has resulted in below average starts in each season... so....
this season I will be doing some serious research which will hopefully result in choosing 15 nailed on players.
    Cheap rotating keepers
Chelsea defender + cheap rotating defenders
gonna splash the cash in midfield
premium striker + mid price + cheap striker
    This is logical right?
