Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Danny Rose

Danny Rose’s prospects looked bleak at the start of the 2014/15 Premier League season. Much to the delight of Tottenham’s fan base, Swansea left-back Ben Davies arrived midway through the summer transfer window, with the logical assumption that he would usurp his underwhelming counterpart in due course. That didn’t transpire, however, and – aside from a brief spell in the second quarter of the campaign – Davies was restricted to bench duty.

Under the tutelage of Mauricio Pochettino – who’s culturing a reputation for transforming young full-backs into accomplished defenders – Rose began to display greater positional discipline while offering an ever-present outlet on the wings. Although he never developed into a Fantasy favourite due to Tottenham’s obliging back line, an improvement on that front next term would greatly enchance Rose’s standing.

Key Factors

  • Notwithstanding Tottenham’s awful defensive record last season (they conceded the third-most goals of any league side and registered just nine clean sheets), Rose posted the highest Fantasy score (103) of his career. Having never tallied more than a solitary goal in a season before, the former Leeds academy product chalked up three last term – a haul that was only bettered by four other defenders. Furthermore, his minutes per goal average (829) ranked seventh among those defenders that clocked up more than 1000 minutes. In terms of his creative output, Rose’s assist tally (five) was only bested by Leighton Baines (nine), Daryl Janmaat (eight) and Branislav Ivanovic (six), illustrating his evolution as a Fantasy asset under Pochettino.

  • The fact that Rose directly contributed to eight goals last season offers promise that the previously maligned left-back can develop into a top pick in his price bracket. A paucity of shut-outs (six) and bonus points (ten) ultimately limited his overall output, which is subsequently expected to keep him around the 5.0 mark when the player price lists are rolled out. Considering that West Bromwich Albion and Southampton’s prime defenders could be in line for a price rise off the back of their strong seasons, Rose could offer a great alternative to those second-tier gems.

  • The Lilywhites closed out the 2014/15 campaign with back-to-back clean sheets – the first time they’d achieved that feat since Gameweeks 1-2. This display of defensive resolve began just two days after Pochettino spoke of his mission to tighten up Tottenham’s rearguard and improve the balance of the side. The Argentinian boss led Saints to 14 shut-outs in his one and only season at St Mary’s Stadium, suggesting he’s well versed in the principles that underpin a solid defence. Handed the luxury of a full transfer window to recruit players that suit his high-pressure system, there’s hope he can batten down the hatches at White Hart Lane and improve the prospects of Spurs’ defensive starters, with the acquisition of Kieran Trippier and Kevin Wimmer and possible arrival of Toby Alderweireld a sign that Spurs may be a decent prospect next time out.

  • Pochettino’s favoured 4-2-3-1 set-up relies upon pacy, hard-working full-backs to provide the width in the absence of traditional wingers – a challenge that Rose appears to have accepted with aplomb. Both the eye test and Rose’s underlying statistics reveal that he’s been granted greater license to maraud down the left flank in 2014/15; his minutes per shot improved from 132.3 to 103.7, while his minutes per chance created also stepped up from 124 to 92.2 under Pochettino. Moreover, the Doncaster-born left-back ranked eighth for defenders in terms of total shots (24) and tenth with regard to key passes (27), demonstrating his potential for attacking returns.

  • Having seen off the challenge of Ben Davies in the second half of last term, Rose claims a strong grip on Tottenham’s left-back berth. His dramatic upturn in form has reportedly courted interest from Premier League giants Manchester City and Chelsea, while Pochettino’s praise certainly suggests that Rose has his backing for the campaign ahead:

“Danny has been the best English left-back this season. I look at the stats and other players in his position. I also look at his performances, which have been great. But that’s my opinion. The final decision will be Roy Hodgson’s. The experience with Luke Shaw last season was fantastic. But now he’s in another context and at another club. You have to realise that players change every year. Every year is different as things happen in our lives. I am not his manager and it is difficult to speak about players at other clubs. I can only explain my experience with him. It is important to give opportunities to young players if they have talent. We provide them with training and push them. After that it’s up to the player. All players all need to feel confidence from the staff, players and supporters.”

Really excited for the new season.

I think Luke Shaw is going to come into his own with a good preseason behind him.

Adam Matthews is a brilliant signing for Sunderland an attack minded defender who if stays injury free will be very useful for returns.

    I would love a back 5 off:

That's a risky one 😕 He's got competition from O'Shea, Brown and they're close to signing Nicolas Lombaerts. As it stands he could be a decent pick, but if Lombaerts is signed, Coates almost certainly wouldn't be first choice...

Coates-Lombaerts? I think O'Shea and Brown were below par last season. Coates was very good during the relegation battle so might be nailed on to begin with

Aye he might be early on. As I've shown, the defence is a bit of a minefield really. Although, I would think if Lombaerts signs, he and O'Shea would be the most likely CB pairing...

I'd prefer Matthews to Coates personally. But both have competition and an element of risk.

Billy Jones isn't a bad player though, and the manager has said Matthews will have to work hard to earn a first-team place.

Clearly lining up Pogba, Reus, Benzema and Ramos. Ed can only juggle this many marquee names at a time.

They need another Striker and a GK too, Valdes isn't that good. Realistically long term it should be 2 CBs and 2 Strikers.

            Didn't want Clyne or Firmino

Pulled out on Gundogan because of crazy wages.

Ramos we will miss out on, just wants more from Real.

Schweinsteiger is still a possibility but how can you be certain he was ever a target?

Their revenue and sponsorship deals allows them to sign who they want. They wouldn't worry about overpaying. People can't seem to accept that they miss out on players for some reason.

Doesn't mean they should openly embrace being fleeced.

The one I agree with you on is Clyne, think United missed out on him, but the rest all I've seen has been speculation from one source or another. Possibly Gundogen, if it is true that he increased his wage demands.

United weren't interested in Clyne. There was a reason Southampton accepted a somewhat low bid. Because Liverpool were the only team bidding.

I might consider Firmino, but seeing as there wasn't a very concrete report on that bid and Pool wound up paying double what United apparently were going to pay for a player who, in my opinion, was not going to get as much gametime at United as Liverpool, I might not count it as missing out.

That's what I've heard too, and it's fair enough. But I believe there was possible interest, they just didn't act, which is fair if they've decided on other targets.

I'm not sure, I'd take him no problem at that price. If they go for Coleman, that's well and good as I'd also quite like an Irish player to be getting some CL football and he's a strong fullback.

And that's well and good but I want bigger fish in other areas such as CB and CDM. The right back position is not where I necessarily want United to focus their ambition until they sort the spine out properly.

As I say thought, won't complain if they do manage to prize Coleman away.

I agree. RB isn't a priority, Valencia can do a job there and so can Jones. We are better off focusing on areas of the team we can improve A LOT. Clyne at RB doesn't do that.

I only think that with Firmino (to a lesser extent) but with Clyne in particular. Clyne's best mates with Hendo and Lallana so I don't think money etc, would've swayed him away from that. Last year of his contract also, Reed said Saints wanted his future resolved before pre season as well. 12.5m is probably a fair price.

To be fair, Clyne may just have wanted to choose Liverpool. Could be a fan, certainly has a number of good mates there, and perhaps he's not so fussed about immediate CL play or possible higher wages, seeing as he's a millionaire.

Not going to bother googling for other sources but here's ESPN and The Guardian (twice) reporting that United cooled their interest:

              http://www.espnfc.com/story/2472133/man-united-drop-pursuit-of-nathaniel-clyne-sources
              http://www.theguardian.com/football/2015/may/29/nathaniel-clyne-manchester-united-southampton-liverpool
              http://www.theguardian.com/football/2015/jun/28/manchester-united-seamus-coleman-everton-no-formal-approach

Also, Clyne previously had this to say on the prospect of moving clubs:
"I am an ambitious person and I want to play Champions League football."

Hardly seems like Liverpool was the ideal destination for him then, does it?

Who said United don't miss out on players?! I've never said that. I could name 20 right now off the top of my head that we've missed out on. So now who's being arrogant? You're essentially putting words in my mouth aren't you?

We may have been in for Firmino, that's very likely imo. Certainly would explain why Liverpool had to pay £28M. But with Clyne, I don't believe we were trying to sign him in the end, as I've explained above...

Will the next Pool signing reject us too I wonder? 😉

Nobody is saying that United don't miss out on players, they regularly do. Just that Clyne wasn't one of them.

Realistically, United are in a position to offer more money, CL football and first choice status at RB. Liverpool can only offer one of those. Even ignoring the reports that United's interested had cooled first, there's still very little logical reason for Clyne to pick Liverpool unless he was a fan.

              Firminho, maybe. Clyne, no.

Obviously Clyne is better than any fullback United currently have.

He's not better than the two fullbacks they're currently linked with though, Darmian or Coleman.

If United get either of them then they won't regret letting Clyne go, if they don't then they will as Clyne was a pretty good buy. We're not really arguing over whether United should have signed him though.

As for United only attracting players due to money rather that CL football, it's a good thing they have both to offer I guess. If Liverpool could do the same then they'd be in a much better position too.

Clyne > current fullbacks? Not by enough to make the transfer worthwhile. You have to remember he's coming from a mid table club. A Young and P Jones came from mid table clubs too. It'd just be more of the same.

The mid table argument.. So a good player has to come from the best team right? Don't see any of barcelona, real madrid, Bayerns fullbacks or even defenders swapping to an epl team anytime soon.. for 12 mil Clyne is a bargain espesh when united paid what was it 28 mil? I honestly hope united play better this year as they were disgusting last year and the competition aint the same without them being up there for the title..

Its a good argument. Better to get a player who has played in the worlds toughest competition, the champions league. Either that or they are young lads that still has plenty of room to develop, like Shaw.

I'm not going to comment on any of the above stuff. I just want to say that if you think the future of a club who won the PL in 2012/13, has missed out on a CL place for one season and has now regained a place while being ranked the most valuable club in the world then your logic is equally atrocious.

Will it take time for them to right United? Yes. But these pie in the sky dreams that their future is somehow in jeopardy is plain foolish.

Meh all my comment was about was no one fears playing against united. You got the champions league spot not because your any good but because everyone else was equally if not as bad.. I expect you to get past the group stages and then get massacred by a half decent team. I have also saved this thread so I can have a good ole laugh later on.

They've mucked up with their transfers ever since Fergi left and more importantly Woodward left.

I wouldn't be overly hopeful they've mastered the art of transfer wheeling dealing yet. Looks like they are being obviously trolled by Ramos and sweini so they can get new contracts and this seems to be a recurring theme in these windows. They seem to think they have a chance of signing these players they are being trolled by only for the deals to not materialise for whatever reason and then they end up panicking at the end of the windows and over paying for whatever is left on the market.

Do you remember when you use to fear playing united? or you were saying "Here we go 80th minute has just begun lets get ready for the inevitable Fergie time goal so they draw/win the game" It would happen every fricken time.. Even a point against united was something to savour.. When you think once upon a time they literally had some of the worlds greatest players in their peak playing for them.. Now they have no name defenders, a midfield that has been missing for as long as I can remember and a couple strikers who somehow manage to get the job done. Oh how the mighty have fallen.. Ill be surprised if united win a trophy in the next 3 years..

You could be right but they are attempting to fill a power vacuum and it was always going to take a few years. I don't think the glazers or Fergi did the club any favours leaving such an old squad of questionable talent for the new managers to take over either tbf

Don't understand how people can consider bringing in Coutinho / Firmino / Milner etc from week 1, as a Liverpool-fan myself I'll stay far away from Liverpool-players untill I've watched some games unless Milner is very underpriced.. Rodgers did almost everything wrong with our players last season and who's to say he won't do it again? From August -> December and after February we were ranked 13th-15th in the league in terms of chances created..

        ** Long post warning!! **

FFS has a problem. Or maybe it doesn't... maybe, the rest of us have the problem.

I've just read Giggs Boson's recent hot topic on clean sheets. It's very good. Less than a couple of minutes skim reading and I know which fixtures to target for clean sheets and who's likely to keep them.

These sort of stats have been known to Mark, Jonty and co. and perhaps - given his own admittance for not watching many PL games - even Simon March, since the trends started appearing last season. They're behind the RateMyTeam engine, the Season Ticker, and inevitably, hundreds of other season tickers that remain private in the belief that their unique version gives them a competitive edge.

I have a mate in our mini-league who's playing style appears to have changed in the past 3 or 4 years. Where once, I'd see a 4 point hit for someone like Scott Parker and a defender who had scored the previous week, now I'm rarely if ever surprised. Free transfers are carried over, captain picks are always sensible (pun definitely intended) and transfer candidates are filtered through the oracle that is the FFS community, before any moves are made. Hell, he's even taken to leaving his transfers to 11.25am on a Saturday to minimise the reverse engineering process...

"It makes it a level playing field", is what I often hear when other people discover FFS. But as someone who gets enjoyment from studying the stats, creating clean sheet tickers and defensive rotations, and taking points hits for 'explosion imminent' type players, I have less room for failure. That risky transfer has to pay off more times than not because a lot of people are playing the percentages; FPL-by-numbers if you like.

There is one saving grace in my mind, and that is these mini-league rivals are playing the game reactively; making decisions heavily influenced on last week's results. So while I don't like to see so much spoon feeding by FFS, the winner of FPL will have correctly evaluated all the ever changing variables, and I'd like to think that skill outweighs the luck. Me? I'm still likely to repeat celebrating going top of my mini-league by taking a 12 point hit to clear out deadwood for the next 6 fixtures... 😀

That is a long post! But at the end of the day your league should be more fun if your opponents can offer a proper challenge. My mate who I have a H2H with never seems to learn and I think it would be a more interesting if it were a bit closer between us and I am not particularly high ranking generally.

Probably worth sharing popular FFS ideas like 343, defensive rotations, captain the obvious guy, price balance across the team, take hits to clear deadwood, always pick players that play etc.

His main problem imo opinion is he doesn't check players fixtures closely enough. This leads him to making the wrong transfers. I wouldn't really like to make suggestions as if you do it wrongly you would get the blame. And it could be seen as a little patronising.

You know what? I'd appreciate being beaten by someone that thinks for themselves and has the guts to back a player they think will do well, rather than take the easy option!

The game was close to broken after the emergence of Kane and Austin last season. It enabled 3 and even 4 big hitter in midfield and really, only the correct captain picks saw the biggest movements. Defenders have offered excellent PPG and value during a lenient fixture run, often returning better points than a mid-priced midfielder. If the pricing of players is better this year (say squad players are given a similar price as starters in case they're promoted or injuries occur, etc.), then we may have to move away from the usual template.

Squad players being given the same price as first team players is a bad idea imo. We often forget how easy it is to fall for a seemingly cheap option that gets a few starts. People won't do that if there is any element of risk. As a result people will continue with the usual safe players and not take risks on those who aren't nailed on. There needs to be an incentive to take a punt and a lower price point on riskier players is that incentive.

I still think there should be price variations such as Bellerin and Debucky being 0.5m less than the likes of Koscielny and Mertesacker, but there shouldn't be a 4.5m Arsenal defender in the game. Or a 5m Spurs forward...

The negatives of having another Kane (which everyone gets) outweigh the excitement of finding a bargain, imo.

Austin was probably priced correctly for a promoted team but had an outstanding season. That's fine, i think.

A 'Kane' is vary rare though. I don't think that will happen every season and I know I've made many a mistake taking a punt on a so called bargain. Often they don't pay off and I fell for it. If you make that punt more expensive I simply won't take punts. That is bad for the game.

One Kane and the game is ruined vs less perceived value with a punt, doesn't seem balanced to me.

If anything, a slightly higher price tag means you wouldn't rush into taking that punt. Surely most of the lure is that the player's price is so cheap?

It works well with Arsenal and Citeh reserve strikers. Around 8m means they're a bargain if Giroud or Aguero gets injured but not so much so that they become essential because of the improvements that can be made to the rest of your squad.

Thats my point though. We should rush to go for a punt, otherwise we simply stick to the template. A punt needs to be cheap so that they become inviting. Punts need to be inviting otherwise we'd all end up with the same team.

I'm not deliberately being argumentative here, but if you rush for a punt based on price, you're not choosing the player based on upcoming fixtures and maybe not even form.

Kane ended up being the no.1 striker pick in a top 6 side for 5m. This meant he wasn't just an enabler to have another big hitter in midfield, he was a big hitter up front AND in midfield.

If the player is sooo cheap that it means you can ride out even a dip in form and not change, then something is wrong.

Having more big hitters isn't necessarily a bad thing though. There were so many options in that category that even then we still didn't have a consensus on which Arsenal mid to have for example

True, you could vary the big hitter. Ramsey's return definitely provided an alternative to Ozil and even Sanchez. Then there was Walcott, of course 🙂

Perhaps we should just agree that when a player is in your team primarily because of his FPL pricing, then this needs to be addressed next season. In suggesting we have a higher ceiling for the pricing of reserve players, I was trying to find an acceptable way around having another 'Kane' this year.

I think a number of respected FPL players paid special mention to not transferring Kane because they had bigger problems to sort. At the price he was doing more than a job.

The ultimate issue I guess is there will always be players that end up in our team for much of the season forming a 'template' because they are well worth the price. I am of the opinion that when everyone had Suarez or RVP in his prime, or Bale etc it was basically the same thing. The only difference is it meant the battle ground was on mid priced assets where as with Kane the battle ground was premium assets. There is no way around it really except to hope there are numerous options across the board and we simply can't have everybody.

You've just spelt it out. There are many more mid-priced assets than premium options, so an under-priced forward means teams are more template as a result.

I disagree with that premise. The vast majority of mid priced options weren't options at all. There were numerous FPL options in the premium price bracket though.

Who do we reckon this season's playing 4.5m gks will be? Remember last season I was pleasantly surprised to find Foster, Krul, Guzan etc at that price.

I reckon it'll be all 3 promoted keepers, Krul, Guzan, Speroni, Myhill.

Schmeichel and Panti 5.0 for me.

Don't think Palace were good enough at the back last season to merit a 5.0 keeper - I reckon Dann will be 5.0 for his attacking points and that'll be it. After Newcastle's performance last season again, only Janmaat at 5.0 in my opinion.

Cheap, performed at every level his played, heavy involvement in team goals, plus like the idea that Doosra pointed out that between Ritchie and Payet you get a solid 8 homes between them first 8 games, could even have him 5th mid and rotate with Sakho too for those first 8, bit of gamble 4th mid but allows big 2 up front

I like the permanent Arsenal defender. They should offer value over Chelsea this season and should be tighter at the back (how they were in 2013-14).

Leicester might be a wait and see with the new manager. Check out West Ham's home fixtures in the start/ first half of the season...

Btw, I think you can go cheap in goal more than any other position due to save points. I'd go cheap as you can there and upgrade your defender rotation.

P.S. Swansea only kept CS's at home in the majority of cases. Are you planning on rotating with Leicester?

No idea. That's another reason why it's pointless doing now tbh. I'd like to start with ADM too, but he looks unlikely to be fit.

You'd think City would give Kun a 3-4 week break then start him GW1 with only a few days training. He's such a key player for them.

It is indeed a possibility. He's much more likely to start the season than others that went to the Copa America.

He's ineligible to play until January, probably won't be a starter when he is, and could be sold back to Atlético again before the window is out.

                    Certainly not a straight-forward transfer.

I think he possibly may start a good few matches for them tbh.

I understand all the ineligibility but Barcelona could easily send him on a six month loan or just have him training. The only odd thing is the sell back, but that might be for legal reasons.

He'll get some gametime, but it will be limited. Can he play in the mid 3? Not sure I'd like to sit out half a season at 28 years of age, especially when I could be a definite starter for one of England's top clubs, so could see the loan.

The sell back isn't to do with legal reasons as far as I'm aware, it's if Barca's new board come in and decide that they don't want him.

                        I think it's a strange one anyway

He may well be hefted about the place. My initial comment was purely phrased though, I think he's chasing the glory but sacrificing time on the pitch. So in that sense it is strange, though we've seen it before.

He plays in the same position as Messi....so unless Messi dies i can't really see him starting anything. He's definitely not going to play on Neymar's side so i guess he'll end up kind of like Sanchez and then he'll definitely join the PL in a couple of years.

I reckon they'll shift him about a bit, and not to mention injury issues. Though you're right, I was wrong to say he'll get plenty of time, am a wee bit overtired so I apologise.

If nobody posted their teams as RMT's I bet there wouldn't be so many template teams out there. But it would be impossible to quantify it.

Honestly, last season was the least templaty in recent seasons. I thought the good price balance, the new bonus rules, and the lack of a consistent template made for an excellent and varied season.

I also enjoyed last season. Cheap forwards just moved the battleground to other areas of the sides more. Also was Kane really more problematic than Suarez the season before who despite being more expensive was a whole lot more reliable.

I don't think Kane broke the game at all. It just meant we had a battle for the best premium assets and that was never a sure thing especially when you look at just Arsenal for example.

We already know the answer to this based on past seasons! Before FFS became so popular, there was a huge spread of RMT's being posted on here. Teams genuinely were different.

But, if there is discussion then people come around to the consensus view, and that is usually 2 or 3 captain picks plus the best percentage picks at the price bracket.

Agreed I think last season was hardest for captain picks.. previous years to that were easy. Captain Rooney, Captain Rvp, Captain Suarez. The whole season minus injuries. Last season I changed every gw ended up sticking with aguero/kane for last few gameweeks if my memory serves me right though.

Yeah captains seemed to be the hardest part of last season. From gw18 onwards my capt scored less than 5ppg avg which cost me circa 40 pts but it was only barely over 5ppg for the season in total so I reckon I was down approx. 80pts on having normal luck in captain picks

Depends on prices, I think. I'd go for the WBA keepers but when will Foster return? Southampton are tempting too but not sure what the story is there either. Maybe just go with Panti and hope for the best. I'll have to think on it a bit.

Soton - Stekelenburg until Forster is fit. That could be Christmas time, it could be next season.

Will they be the same defensively without Forster, Clyne, Schneiderlin and Toby though? Plus Bertrand is out injured for a while too.

I know they did well after selling defenders last year but to do it twice in a row is asking a bit much.

Also I'm not sure I get the 'they've done it once so they can't do it again' logic. We've now got a history of doing it. Koeman's a clever manager, well backed by his board.

Not saying you can't do it again, just that the changes bring up a reasonable level of doubt. Especially when we're talking about GKs, a position it would irritate me to have to waste fts on.

Yeah I'm not punting on us unless there's something enticing in the pricing. I think our defensive assets will be too pricey to bother with the risk.

                  No idea yet. Ideally I'd want a 4.5 and a 4.0. But it all depends on prices. I may stretch to a 4.5 + 4.5 rotation or maybe a 5.0 + 4.0.

I have 8 teams in my thoughts atm, for GK + DEF positions.

I have been approached by some people to launch it and attempt to monetise it but I'm not sure that its what i want to do.

All sorts came out of the woodwork posting fake things to make people believe the FPL had gone live and the two main usual suspects were at each other, up votes siding with their man and all sorts. Im just glad I have a job to focus on.

West Ham kept 7 CS at home and only 2 away, so I think they'll be a chance. Price drop for Tomkins maybe?

He's excellent. Able to play RB or LB, best attributes are stamina and pace, with stamina at the top. Unbelievable engine on him.
Plays RB/LB for Torino, and RB for Italy national team. He is the guy that gave Baines an incredibly hard time at the World Cup, so you probably have seen him?

World Cup is a blur, but i probably have watched him and just can't remember. If he's a proper RB with ability to get up and down, and strong in the tackle then great. If he's not injury prone, then it already makes him a good upgrade on Rafa and obviously Valencia.

Hopefully proves to be a better signing than Clyne(assuming we get it done).

Something you might or might not be aware of, is that Torino have supposedly given a deadline of next Sunday to sign him. So if he's signed, it could be very soon 😀

i wouldnt have said hes exceptionally quick, but hes also not slow, way more defensive than coleman for example, will still cross but not as often or as effectively, in terms of defensive duties hes very very solid

Only seen him with Italy, looked good. Won their player of the year, I think.

Would do well at United and would be cheaper than Coleman (who would also be a good option).

Seems increasingly probable that Clasie will be brought in as Schneiderlin's replacement. We wanted Imbula and missed out. Gueye will probably be at Villa by the time the Schneiderlin deal is sorted. And Koeman did confirm today that Clasie is on his list of targets.

Imbula was always going to be difficult. Inter, Porto, Valencia etc others were all interested.

I might just pick last years scout pick team of the season this year. That has to come in at under 100 million right?

                Hi lads!

I know it's a tad early but how pricey are Theo and Ramsey going to be in your opinion?

Theo is the player that will probably hold up the release date of FPL, what on earth could they price him at? Ramsey will probably be 9m again.

Probs 9 for Theo. I would Ramsey to be 8.5 as he wasn't prolific last season.
