Scout Notes – Pre-Season Friendlies – Tuesday

Liverpool open their summer schedule in convincing fashion, with Divock Origi finding the net on his debut. Cameron Jerome continues his fine pre-season form for Norwich, Moussa Sissoko nets for Newcastle, whilst Bournemouth put four past Philadelphia Union.

True Thai Premier League All Stars 0 Liverpool 4

Brendan Rodgers fielded two different XIs in each half of the Reds’ victory in Bangkok, handing debuts to Adam Bogdan, Nathaniel Clyne, Divock Origi, James Milner and Joe Gomez. The Northern Irish manager deployed his charges in a 4-4-2 midfield diamond from the start, with Lucas Leiva shielding the defence, Joao Carlos Teixeira and Jordan Rossiter playing just ahead, and Lazar Markovic operating from the tip behind a strike duo of Rickie Lambert and Danny Ings. Teixeira delivered an inch-perfect pass for Markovic to latch onto and score the opener, before serving up an accurate corner for Mamadou Sakho to double the lead.

After the break, Rodgers then tinkered with his tactics and rolled out a 4-3-3 formation, with Origi leading the line as a lone striker. Adam Lallana added the third after being introduced in the second half, while Origi capped off the scoring with a close-range header from a Jordan Henderson corner.

Post-match, Rodgers praised Origi’s performance, with the Belgian also striking the woodwork twice prior to finding the net:

“I thought he was excellent. You can see his movement and what really pleased me tonight was his persistence. He had a couple of chances that he missed that he would want to score. But he kept going, he was very positive, and obviously he showed how good he is in the air. [It was] a great cross into the box and it was a good header that he scored, so we’re very pleased for him.”

Hitchin Town 0 Norwich City 10

Alex Neil’s outfit dispatched of the seventh division side in clinical fashion, boosting their goal output to 17 from just two pre-season fixtures. Neil elected to name two unique XIs either side of the half, with the first wave of players lining up in a 4-3-3 formation. Jamar Loza and Josh Murphy supported central striker Cameron Jerome, with Alexander Tettey, Graham Dorrans and Louis Thompson manning the midfield. Jerome (5.0) once again made the difference in the early exchanges, bagging a brace in the first half to send the Canaries into the dressing room 2-0 up – he’s now scored five times in two matches, albeit against lower level opposition.

The second half saw Gary Hooper spearhead a 4-2-3-1 set-up, with Tony Andreu, Wes Hoolahan and Jacob Murphy forming the three, and Youssouf Mulumbuu earning his debut in the double pivot. The Canaries scored at ease after the break: Andreu netted a hat-trick, Gary O’Neil recorded a brace, and Hoolahan and Steven Whittaker grabbed a goal apiece. After the encounter, Neil confirmed that Norwich are not contending with any fresh injuries while revealing that his players will be afforded increased pitch time from here on in:

“It’s just a case of making sure that we get good quality work in without picking up injuries. Our quality at times was fantastic throughout the game, but we need to step up again with the opposition that we’re going to face. The game on Friday will see everyone go from playing 45 minutes to playing 60. We’ll gradually bring it up to the 90-minute mark.”

Philadelphia Union 1 Bournemouth 4

The Cherries cruised to victory in their pre-season opener, with manager Eddie Howe handing minutes to 24 players. New signing Joshua King produced a cool finish after 20 minutes to break the deadlock, before Calum Wilson extended the visitors’ lead with a side-footed effort. Marc Pugh popped up for Bournemouth’s third with a curling strike, while a converted penalty from Tokelo Rantie rounded off the scoring after Pugh was felled in the box.

Howe was quick to talk up the performances of three debutants (Sylvain Distin, Christian Atsu and Tyrone Mings) after the final whistle, highlighting Mings’ attacking threat in particular:

“I thought all the new guys really put their mark on what they are going to bring to the squad. Sylvain (Distin) with his experience, Christian (Atsu) with his ability and flair, and Tyrone (Mings), while he was on the pitch, was marauding and looked a real threat, so I was delighted.”

Club Atlas 2 Newcastle United 1

The Magpies tasted defeat in the first match of their US tour, with Moussa Sissoko supplying their solitary goal. Steve McClaren fielded his starting line-up in a 4-3-2-1 formation, with Sissoko, Siem de Jong (in “the hole”) and Yoan Gouffran playing behind lone striker Papiss Cisse. Vernon Anita and Jack Colback occupied the double pivot, while the back five was comprised of Tim Krul, Daryl Janmaat, Mike Williamson, Jamaal Lascelles and Massadio Haidara.

Sissoko cut the hosts’ lead just before the half, following two goals in quick succession from Club Atlas frontman Gonzalo Ruben Bergessio. The Toon came closes to equalising through Cisse – who saw his header saved on the goal line by the opposing keeper – but couldn’t breach the Mexican outfit’s defence in the second 45. McClaren enacted six changes with 20 minutes left on the clock, affording minutes to Rolando Aarons, Ayoze Perez and Gabriel Obertan.

Sacramento Republic 1 Sunderland 0

Dick Advocaat opted for a 4-4-2 set-up in the Black Cats’ second pre-season run-out. Wes Brown and John O’Shea formed the centre-back pairing, while debutant Adam Matthews and youngster Tom Beadling were deployed in the full-back berths. Jermain Defoe and Steven Fletcher played ahead of a four-man midfield comprised of Lee Cattermole, Jack Rodwell, Sebastian Larsson and Emanuele Giaccherini.

Fletcher proved to be the Wearside club’s biggest threat, testing the keeper with a low strike and clattering the crossbar with a header in the first half. Will Buckley, Connor Wickham, Danny Graham and Liam Bridcutt were also given minutes in the second half.

In terms of absentees, Patrick van Aanholt (injury), Sebastian Coates (extended rest due to Copa America duties) and Adam Johnson (visa issues) all missed out but are expected to join up with the tour at some point.

Finally, a reminder that we’re collating all the pre-season action via a dedicated section here as the action unfolds.

Basically if Aguero is fit - then approximately 4 days of work has gone down the drain for me 🙂

You use the word 'work', I use the word 'fun'. Pre-season tinkering is the best part of this game 😉

There is a strong chance he makes GW1 though, he's such a key player for City. Should missing pre-season deprive him of the West Brom match practice before Chelsea the following week?

I think he'll play some part in gw1, but honestly he doesn't strike me as a player who needs games under his belt. He's match ready as soon as he's fit

IMO Even if Aguero is fit the fixtures aren't great. wba, CHE, eve is not the most open start to a season

My plan (at the moment) is Rooney and Costa to start and upgrading before week four depending on form

This may involve a hit but being so early in the season there's plenty time to make the -4 back

    Thoughts on this draft?

    Butland Ruddy
    Ivanovic Mings Holebas Coates Morgan
    Hazard Ramsey Yaya Ritchie 4.5
    Rooney Kane Sakho

      Butland rotates with Speroni
if you wanna roatate BOU/WAT keepers seem a better choice
      Coates> Williams rotates w/Morgan (-.5).
      maybe rotate Hoolahan/Wanayama< Ritchie/4.5 (+1.5)

Defence is a bit light, would opt for Clyne > Azpi if you can get £0.5 from anywhere.

Either that or drop one of your 2 strikers to make funds to upgrade.

Was wandering if defence wasn't essential for the first 4 weeks due to lots of goals usually. Also, won't Clyne be playing wing back???

I suppose he does have Bournemouth at home week 2, i guess short term it could be fine. May need a backup for Walcott though, i have him as well and am expecting him to fall back on the bench in GW2-3.

Schmeichel's opening fixtures are better than chelsea as well, depends entirely how Jose plays his team, could go super defensive vs City

    RMT please:

    Schmeichel
    Azpi, Darmian, Mings
    Fab, Walcott, Yaya, Ritchie
    Costa, Rooney, Sakho
(Butland, Barry, Collins, Targett) - £1.5m bank

Could get Hazard in but would have to sacrifice Fab/Costa/Sakho for Haz/Benteke/Deeney

Will be getting Aguero in GW4 with either Rooney or Costa being the placement until then. Will also be downgrading Walcott GW2/3 to Ozil/Rambo once he gets dropped back to the bench leaving me with £2m leftover for the Kun transfer.

Nah, not an FPl option imo.

If he played every minute of the season, with his career averages, he'd score 5 assist 6.

Now in a worse team, and not as good as he used to be, and thise numbers eould be even lower.

my thinking process is united wouldn't buy him, knowing all these things to be their next playmaker with mata in the middle, as well as not to my knowledge looking for anymore midfield players, and apart from the main 6 he will be going against lesser teams and his class may shine through

7.0 to me is worth the risk for a class player that should play most minutes anyway, could be *bargain of the season*

Thoughts here guys? My defence is pretty set in stone due to the decent rotation it brings. Open to suggestions elsewhere, though. Cheers 🙂

    Myhill, Butland
    Ivanovic, Kos, Coates, Huth, Francis
    Fabregas, Chadli, Ozil, Silva, 4.5
    Rooney, Benteke, Sakho

Strong defence mate, not entirely sure on Chadli, Spurs always hit or miss.

Yeah that's the thing aye. Alternatively I could go Haz + Ritchie over Ozil + Fabregas to get that extra captaincy option.

Rooney could be a decent captain in GW1 and 2, though.

Much more likely to get a patch of 10, 12, 9, 12 from a striker than a defender though. We have transfers so need to look long term to much, all about getting on the purple patches. And of course captaincy on a striker is the most comfortable with predictability of points much easier than that of a defender

            • 12 Years
            8 years, 10 months ago

Also PPG of a striker is much higher, the best strikers from last season spent a fair bit of time injured or came in to the side a bit later (Kane) so their totals don't refelct how much more points they actually score. The top defenders play every minute of every game so their totals are inflated.

why? We hardly ever keep a player for the whole season, we use transfers so you jump on the higher ppg's you can get from a striker rather than a def

Surely the best (most fun) way to use them is to save them for a big DGW; have your DGW captain score tripled and get 8 attackers out and have DGW players on your bench too maybe. Could try get over 200 in one GW

He's very happy in Dortmund at the moment, now that is always subject to change especially if Reus leaves next season (I think he's 100% staying as well). Berahino is a very good prospect, and I hope the club have learned lessons from the Sterling stuff. As for Tekkers, I wouldn't complain, though it kills Rooney as an option...

Hendo ownership 26% - likely to rise a further 5 to 10% by the start.

If he blanks - casuals will push his price down by selling yes? Same goes for Wanyama on 16%.... if u have both, you're gonna see a price drop x 2 (potentially).

Ive not even considered Hendo - but this would REALLY put me off.

Think you might be overthinking things here.

You are picking Henderson because you think he will do well right? So even if he blanks once you aren't going to get rid?

So if he does well his price will go back up. If he doesn't then you may have made the wrong decision and that's life.

Problem is that he plays for Spurs

I look at him every time I tinker but then remember he's a spurs defender now

I'm not going for a spurs defender this season... they somehow always let me down

I would, but can you trust the Spurs defence, especially if Lloris is out at the start.

him moreno/sakho/ cedric, swansea and west ham defenders all at 5 are great value for the start of the season

Good player at a great price. Just one major drawback....

    Moreno- Norwich-Bournemouth-Watford-Sunderland
(all five rotate well for the first 10 weeks when i intend to wildcard)

    Hazard-Ramsey-Chadli-Henderson-4.5mid

    Kun-Rooney-Sakho

too light in defense? shall i downgrade hazard to cesc and get kos + azpi ?

I see hazard as an absolute must have. Better a light defence, than no hazard imo 🙂

hazard is by no means an absolute must. Aguero and walcott should be higher up the tier list in my opinion

Aguero as well, but not when he misses the first couple of GW's... I dunno about Walcott tho

walcott scores or assists every 88 mins, far better than any other mid - i fully expect him to take his chance in sanchez's absence

Anyone else considering Gomis or Cisse instead of Sakho?

    My forwards would then be:

Costa - Benteke (or Lukaku if Benteke leaves Villa) - Gomis/Cisse

WHU has been linked with Hernandez so not sure is that is a good thing for Sakho

remember the glory days of sissoko as an AM? If he takes back that position could be a steal at 6.0.
