The Numbers Game – 2014/15 Review – Southampton

The sceptics were circling ahead of Ronald Koeman’s first year in charge of Southampton after former manager Mauricio Pochettino was followed through the exit door by a number of first-team regulars. The Dutchman proved them wrong, though, and after dipping into the transfer market to acquire the likes of Sadio Mane, Graziano Pelle, Dusan Tadic and Ryan Bertrand, he guided the Saints to a seventh-place finish – one spot higher than they’d managed under the Argentine in 2013/14.

In this members article, we cast an eye back over Koeman’s first campaign at St Mary’s, analysing the chief goal threats and creators and comparing their overall displays to Pochettino’s only full year at the helm.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

During the season if I didn't know what transfer to make I'd put the ticker forward a week to get someone 'ahead of the curve' and it seems to work out very well. Good way of avoiding the template anyway, might do it again from GW2 or at least have a few GW2 players in there.

    Ruddy/Hennessey

    Azpe / Cedric / Morgan / O'shea / Taylor
    Hazard / Ozil / Yaya / Ritchie / Dyer
    Costa / Rooney / Sakho

    Opinions on this ?
and which is better , Cedric + O'shea or Williams + Yushida?

Ok, some serious reshuffling of my squad and i have come up with this. Please be gentle!

    Schmeichel - Hamer
    Koscielny - Azpillicueta - Francis - Holebas - 4.0
    Walcott - Mata - Mane - Chadli - Surman
    Aguero - Costa - Deeney

so basically i have taken out Rose in favour of the Bournemouth/Watford rotation pair. Puncheon has become Mane and Sakho has become Deeney - wise moves?

don't take a player out because of what people here say.

RMT are not very useful, people will diss your team if you don't have a team they like or players they have themselves, and will moot players they don't like or wouldn't get it.

I think a question like Milner or Hendo will yield better results,

and go with your gut/ If you want Danny Rose don't let anyone else tell you otherwise unless the reason is Spurs have signed a new fullback and might not be a starter, or he is injured, etc....

I want benteke. Although i have doubts like others do about whether he can fit into our system. People are making assumptions that he cant press, isnt mobile etc because they havent seen him do it. Thats prob more to do with villa's tactics. We have made so many mistakes with transfers that its easy for us to have doubts about him

... but the job asked of him is just to be the focal point, he always just wants the ball to him so he can attack directly up against the CBs. I really can't see the selfless work ethic needed for players at a bigger team.

But you're not basing it on anything apart from what lambert and then Sherwood asked of him. They didnt require him to press like we would want him to. Doesnt mean he wont. He isnt mario.

I wouldn't say that. Look at his goalscoring record for Villa, it's not that impressive considering he is their main man.

He does not work hard, does not press, track back..etc...

Unless BR changes the Liverpool system which will not happen, no one knows how well Tekkers will adept to it, and as you say so many bad transfers in the past, why drop 32million on a player we are not 100% can do the job we need.

I know it won't happen but would much rather BR and Liverpool just dug deep and got the likes of Higuain for 60mil,

I'd rather we spent nothing and waited until the time is right to purchase the proper player. Arsenal do it all the time, the fans may hate it but it works. Panic buying never gets you anywhere and we've had far more than our fair share of it.

Clubs have interest in large numbers of players at any one time, they keep tabs on them. We've looked at other players this window. To go with Tekkers would be a panic buy purely because the club thinks the need is so great we have to go for a sub par option.

                I agree

If we can keep Sturridge fit I think Ings and Origi can provide enough cover for now, and maybe get the right player in January or next summer.

we need to be building towards the future, not throwing money at whoever is available.

If he was 20m I would be very happy to get him but 32 is far too much.

I tihnk we have a very good team, good enough to challenge for top4 again this season like we did last season.

Indeed, buying Tekkers now guarantees we won't be buying another Striker for another 2-3 years at least, so why limit yourself to that when there are so many ifs and buts over the player? The Liverpool way I suppose.

No. But I'd rather use Ings now because long term we could get someone far far better than Benteke. It's this shortsightedness that costs Liverpool every single window.

    Hi folks

I've been doing some analysis based on 'minutes played per point earned on last season's stats; the lower the minutes per point figure, the better the performance - obviously. It's thrown up some really interesting stats - such as this:

    Name……Mins……Points…...Minutes per point
    Silva……..2646……..191……………….13.85
    Sanchez..2944……..207……………….14.22
    Hazard….3373……..233……………….14.48

Clearly what this shows is that when Silva is fit, he's been scoring FPL points at a more frequent rate than both Sanchez and Hazard. A potential bargain given the prices attached to each this year...

We can do a similar analysis of some lesser priced midfielders to assess potential value:

    Name………….Mins …...Pts……..MPP
    Adam………… 1511……..97……15.58
    Sigurdsson….2682…….154…..17.42
    Henderson….3256…….162….20.10
    Milner............1749…….107….16.35

Again, this shows that when selected, Charlie Adam is a very reliable FPL point scorer. More so than the more steeply priced Sigurdsson, Henderson and Milner - selection does of course need to be considered.

Another point which has been discussed in recent posts I've seen is the Henderson vs Milner debate; Yes Henderson scored well last season but he also played a lot of minutes. The above stats show that, should Milner replicate his performance last season with a more regular starting berth at Liverpool there's every indication that he could out score his new colleague.

Of course, there are various things to consider such as selection and injury prone-ness but hopefully this provokes some thought.

he will play CM with Hendo, maybe a diouble pivot? don't think anyone knows how we will line up yet/ We also have Lucas and Allen.

don't know what formation BR is gonna go with next season, but Milner is versatile so I would expect him to play in vacation of positions over the season

£4m ITB now to improve a front 3 of Rooney (Or Aguero if cleared fit/ready, would leave £1.5m ITB), Sakho Deeney. What to do?

What do people think about going with defence of something like:

    Schmeic / Hamer

    Kosc / Azpi / Darmian / 4m / 4m

Too risky going with 2 4m's? If plan is to WC pretty early, doesn't seem a huge risk and it means you can have rest of team looking like:

    Fabs / Ramsey / Sterling / Chadli / 4.5

    Rooney / Costa / Sakho

I personally think that it's a huge mistake to spend so much money on goalkeepers and defenders. I'm really not keen on Agbonlahor either. I'm currently on -

          Panti / Hamer

          Darmian / Reid / Ogbonna / Martin / O'Shea

          Hazard / Chadli / Mane / Hendo / Depay

Costa (MITB for Aguero asap) / Berahino / Graham

I'm gonna do 3-5-2 because l feel this season there is much more value in midfielders. Look at Sunderland, West Ham and Norwich fixtures early on for pretty good defenxive rotation. Then you can have much more for a really strong midfield. Just my two cents.

Nice. Do you think that Depay will start the first game? I have a feeling that Van Gaal will start with Young and then sub him on around the 60-70th min. And what do you think about Herrera. I feel like if he gets gametime at the CAM then he will flourish, especially with that connection he has with Mata. And I also feel like Rooney will have a 20+ goal season. Let me mess around with my team and see what I can do because defenders can be the difference, but I want to find a way to get Sanchez in so I'll see

            1. Theatre_Of_Screams
              • 9 Years

I think Depay is clearly going to feature heavily, and from his YouTube highlight reels, looks very good but who knows whether he'll start GW1. It's a bit of a gamble to start with him. I was really impressed with Herrera last season and thought he scored some good goals.

I definitely think that he's nailed but l expect he will have a good season but l am drawn to Henderson more (if you don't have him) because he is captain so he'll defo play 90 mins every goals and because he will be on penalties, corners and probably free kicks. Herrera is a fine choice imo though.

I think Rooney will have a great season and United are going to flourish this time out be l personally can't do without Aguero. He is a machine and will most likely punish you if you don't have him.

I also really like the look of Sterling a 9m because he is nailed on, unlike Depay has plenty of premier league experience, and has joined the side who score the most goals in the league.

Looking over everything, l really think you have to choice two of the big guns. I'm going for Hazard and Aguero and, as much as it pains me as he was a beast last season, l just don't think there is enough cash for Sanchez. Your team is affected too much elsewhere and l really think balance is key.

Yeah just looking at it maybe Sanchez isn't worth it. Generally players who come into the season off of a strenuous tournament struggle. When is aguero's injury going to end? I want to keep Herrera so should I go hendo over barkley? ross is the heart of evertons attack when on form and seems to be injury free. Plus he is at 6.5 which is a bargain imo. I thought about Sterling also but I want to see how he does in the first few weeks just like Depay.

I don't know when Aguero will start playing but it'll probably be GW 2-4. I'm going to just keep a look out to reports and either bring him in when he almost certainly going to play or just miss his first match and bring him in when he's definitely back. I would definitely steer clear of Barkley personally, only 2 goals and 3 assists in 1961 minutes last season and Everton have some hard games - GW3 Man City H, GW4 Spurs A, GW5 Chelsea H, GW6 Swansea A, GW8 Liverpool H.

I've been considering the so-called 'All Out Attack' chip and I honestly don't think I'll use it this season. As far as I'm concerned it has the propensity to do as much damage as good, and so for me this renders the risk greater than the potential reward. But then as the old adage goes, it's never over until the fat lady's tonsils are warmer than a moss-gathering early bird in the hand.

There seems to be two ways of using the chip. Option A is to stick with whatever squad you have in a given week, probably when your defenders have poor fixtures, and playing a (probably) £4.5 attacker instead. However, there are few options who actually start at this price, let alone any who garner returns, and the chances are you'll end up with 1-3 points*. Of course, it should be considered that an Ayew for an Ayew and a Huth for a Huth is better than two in the bush, but is that really better than playing a defender who could get 6+* just for a clean sheet, even from a tough fixture?

Option B is to use transfers and/or a wildcard to change your team structure and get an 8th attacker with a better chance of returns. For example, you could make 2 transfers the previous week for -4 to downgrade someone (possibly the defender you intend to rest) and then upgrade your £4.5ish benchwarmer (e.g. Wanyama -> Ritchie). However this not only weakens your side by sacrificing elsewhere, it presents a problem the following week when you are forced to make transfers and hits that you could have been better used, leave money on the bench, or even use a Wildcard. All for what? To play a low/mid-price mid who may average, say, 4 points per game* over a defender who may score a point or two lower (or higher)? To me, it seems a huge waste of transfers and funds. To make it worth the sacrifice, you would need a huge slice of luck, and for the attacker to score 8+ points more than the defender. Chances are you will have butchered your team for hits and gained no reward, laving your team in more Barney Rubble than Abu Hamza trying to tie a shoelace.

Now, doubtless, there will come a juicy post-Christmas double gameweek when team values are sky-high with 8 premium attackers in every team, and Ivanovic will pick up a convenient one-week niggle, and I will be left with a hen's produce lathered all over my humble-pie smeared visage. If this is the case, I will be the one sweating as a 1970's TV presenter does when he hears the doorbell, and my enemies will declare a day of feasting to celebrate my inglorious demise. But until that day comes, I will allow my chip to rot like the corpse of a Bavarian monk jack, and hope that '253' will be my rank, not my formation, as a result of my deliciously evil genius. Adieu.

None. Just go with a 4.5.
Wait, is Anya 4.5? Go with him. I don't know who he is by the way 🙂

Anya is a winger for Watford at 4.5.

How about Deeney or Wilson up top?

Ah here. You're pushing your luck now 🙂
I really don't know much about the promoted team's players.
I hear one of them has pens and one doesn't. Go with the one that does. And whomever has the better fixtures. Bournmouth I think?

I really should clue myself in a bit better before answering Qs 😀

            Haha tough one too call.

Both prolific in the Championship and Deeney is captain so 100% nailed. Wilson is fast though so could be extremely effective in the Prem. it's a tough one to call it really is.

Bournemouth have the better opening fixture but Watford have some tasty home games after the opening day

If you have Firmino and .5 in the bank, would you trade up for any midfielder if you already have Costa, Giroud, Kane, Sterling and Depay?

I feel like no 8.5-9.0 midfielder is worth the trade when I'm already covering the focal point of that team's attack with what I already have, plus Firmino might be a worthy punt.

Agreed mate, Walcott is the next best option. I worry about him getting a start, plus I think Giroud is going to take a fair share of points with Sanchez out. Might just sit tight or upgrade a keeper.

Nope. Fab is an option if I drop Firmino. Hazard is too expensive if you want to have my forward line. If Costa's healthy, I don't see Hazard + Costa + whichever pair of forwards scoring more than my current midfield + Costa + Giroud + Kane.

Which makes Fabregas the only option that you mentioned. Maybe he'll come off to the start he had last year. Maybe not - he can lie deep.

He guys. just curious what you would choose if you had to between:

    A. Yaya + Firmino
    B. Silva + Henderson

Both combinations are 17m. Thanks in advance 🙂

I'm a huge football fan, but this is the first year i'm involved in fantasy football. I've spent a few days browsing this (and other) websites to get things a bit more clear in my head - I had no idea how much thought goes into setting a team! (my initial team had courtois and the cheapest keeper I could find, but a lot of the comments I've read + the article on keepers showed me it was better to do something else)

Anyway, you all seem friendly so any advice I could get would be much appreciated:

    My team is:

    Hart (Guzan)

    Azpil - Kosch - Skrtl - Fonte - (Darmian)

    Cazorla - Silva - Depay - Bolasie - Downing

    Rooney - (Deeney) - (Vardy)

I have no money left over.

I know downing is off to the championship so i'm looking for a replacement, any suggestions would be helpful.
My keeper situation is a bit expensive (10mil overall)
4-5-1 is a formation I haven't seen used by a single person so far so im assuming I've done something terribly wrong haha.
On a side note, I see a lot of people with ozil in their teams, but not many with cazorla. They are priced the same and I think cazorla averages more points a game iirc so if someone could point out what i'm missing that would also be great...

It's a lot of advice im asking for but help with any of the concerns I have would be awesome.

-downing going to championship>get him out
      - bolasie has a terrible schedule> get him out
      - You should look at some value defenders 4.0-4.5 defs such as SUN def, francis, lei defenders so you can upgrade your forwards. I think you're spending too much in your defense. Just my opinion.

      ***hint***

Get Henderson... you already have Depay and Azpil so you're good on that one

      1. Dannyalpha
        • 8 Years
        8 years, 9 months ago

ok, which attackers are decent value though? I would have to virtually severe my team to fit aguero it (but that's the end goal) should I look at potentially benteke? I assume if he moves to Liverpool he'll be a starter and his price might increase...

Henderson over downing I will do as well, replacing bolasie with a budget player.

        thanks!

You need more captaincy options - spend less money on defence and more on attackers who will have a higher points per game total.

My suggestions would be you've spent too much on defence and gk and your mid and str have suffered.

Use the rotation capabilities of defenders to bring those values down and plough it into your attacking options.

Also, for 8.5, it would be best to go with Mata rather than Depay as you never know how a new payer to the EPL will start out.
As for Cazorla, I think he may sit deeper this season so Ozil may be a better option for attacking.

      Hope that helps.

I'm friendly (sometimes) so I'll give it a go. Welcome aboard, btw 🙂

GKs and defence : I think you have spent far too much.

I actually like that midfield. Save some cash at the back and upgrade one of the cheap forwards.

3-5-2 is doable but 4-5-1 is a recipe for disaster.

So, first draft of my team for this season. Got some odd strategy going in my head so this team is for GW1-3 only based on fixtures.

    Ruddy/Butland
    Ivan/Ogbonna/Huth/Coates/Francis
    Fabregas/Walcott/Mata/Mane/Bentaleb
    Giroud/Rooney/Defoe

Then, before GW4, bring in Aguero and Wanyama for Giroud and Mane

Am then looking at the option for the wc during the international break to bring in Hazard and Silva but that still needs work.

Any suggestions about the initial team or strategy?

I fancy Sunderland's fixtures though. C Wilson is the other option but the Liverpool away fixture puts me off as I don't really want to use Bentaleb.

The Initial team - Strong forward & Midfield is quite balanced but some changes could be made. Rooney im not assured just yet so bring in deeney, swap walcott with depay and mata with carzola and mane with delafeuo and leave defoe.

This way you can open up more money for defense! or bring Hazard in for Fab!

Appreciate the advice but I'm not convinced by the changes and here's why.

        Depay is unproven
Cazorla will be too deep this year
        Prefer Soton fixtures over Everton
Cant bring in Deeney as he's Watford and I wont pick any of them (being a Luton fan).

Thanks for the options though as food for thought.

Depends on the formation you wish to play. I'd sacrifice a midfielder down to boost your strike force. Maybe Cabaye to a 4.5/5 to increase JRod to a Benteke or something or if you drop Vardy down to C Wilson you could get a 9m striker?

ighalo was probably the most prolific player to come up from the championship in the past decade. this isn't just pre-season, it's just 2015. tragedy if he's stuck on the bench loads this season
