Fantasy Premier League – Player List Analysis – Mid-Price Forwards

We roll out the penultimate article in our assessment of this year’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Player List this evening, After casting an eye over the Goalkeepers, Budget Defenders, Mid-Price Defenders, Premium Defenders, Budget Midfielders, Mid-Price Midfielders, Premium Midfielders and
Budget Forwards, we analyse the available options in the mid-price bracket up front.

Arsenal’s Danny Welbeck carries a 7.5 price tag after scoring just four times in 25 appearances in his debut season at the Emirates. With Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott surely ahead of him in the pecking order for the lone striker role, in addition to fierce competition for the attacking midfield slots, the England international may not see enough playing time to be regarded as a genuine Fantasy prospect. Welbeck is also a slight doubt for the start of the new season with a knee injury that has taken longer to heal than expected.

Chelsea pair Loic Remy and Radamel Falcao have both been priced at 7.5, though their pitch time is likely to be determined by Diego Costa’s ability to remain free from injury and suspension. Bearing in mind that Costa was restricted to just 24 starts last term, there’s certainly a chance that at least one of the pair will benefit at some point, though for now, neither looks worth gambling over, given how precious our three striker slots are. Remy could be worth considering if a mooted move to Palace or West Ham transpires, though.

Despite what was a pretty disappointing campaign last year, Romelu Lukaku appears to be one of the stronger options in the mid-price bracket. The Belgian international comes in at 8.0 this season and may benefit from only having the Premier League to focus on, having played a major role in Everton’s Europa League campaign last term. His goal conversion rate of 9.5% is a concern, however, while the Toffees tough opening schedule mean it’s only when the fixtures ease from Gameweek 11 that he may begin to feature on our radars. Nonetheless, Lukaku looks a secure option – he started 32 times last term, a tally bettered by only four other forwards, whilst he’s now scored at least ten times in all three of his seasons in the top-flight.

Over on the red half of Merseyside, summer signing Danny Ings and Mario Balotelli have been valued at 7.5 and 7.0 respectively. With Daniel Sturridge ruled out for the opening part of the season, it remains to be seen who Brendan Rodgers will opt for up front, though, after the Reds triggered Christian Benteke’s release clause at Villa. Owned by over 14% of FPL managers, Ings was fielded on the right of a front three in Liverpool’s previous friendly but with Rodgers full of options in the final third, he looks far from certain to lead the line in the season ahead. After a disappointing first year at Anfield, Balotelli looks set for the exit door if the Reds can find a buyer.

Another two forwards that could be set to leave the Premier League are Manchester City duo Edin Dzeko (7.5) and Stevan Jovetic (7.0). The Bosnian striker has been linked with a move to Roma, while former Fiorentina man Jovetic could also be set for a return to Serie A. Both look to be behind Sergio Aguero and Wilfried Bony in the pecking order, while latest addition Raheem Sterling can also play in various roles across the forward line. Even if Dzeko or Jovetic don’t depart this summer, it is very unlikely either will be viable Fantasy options in the forthcoming campaign.

In just 22 appearances last season, Papiss Cisse (6.5) managed to score 11 times and ended the campaign with a goal conversation rate of 24.4%, second only to Diego Costa’s 26.3%. New boss Steve McClaren utilised a 4-3-3 at Derby last year and has rolled out a 4-2-3-1 system in both matches in charges so far, suggesting a lone striker formation will be favoured. Bearing in mind that the Magpies have been heavily linked with moves for Aleksandar Mitrovic and Charlie Austin, there are still question marks over whether the injury-prone Cisse can remain at the top of the pecking order.

Southampton’s Graziano Pelle and Jay Rodriguez are valued at 8.0 and 7.0 respectively this year and both could provide decent options over the course of the season. Despite a disappointing second half of the 2014/15 campaign, which saw him go on a 14-match scoreless run, Pelle started 37 times last term, more than any other forward, and his physical attributes as a target man should ensure he remains Ronald Koeman’s preferred choice as the lone striker. The more versatile Rodriguez still offers an option on the flanks and, after finally recovering from a year-long knee injury, will be hoping to rediscover the form that saw him net 15 times during 2013/14. Certainly, the Saints’ opening schedule, which pits them against just three of last term’s top three in the first 13 Gameweeks, could barely be kinder and both forwards are already off the mark – Rodriguez has notched twice, whilst Pelle netted in a friendly win over Groningen earlier today.

Coming in at 6.5, fellow Senegal international Mame Biram Diouf is the only Stoke forward in the mid-price category. After scoring 12 goals in the previous campaign, the former United man could be decent value if he can stave off the challenge of new signing Joselu for a starting berth as the lone striker in Mark Hughes’s 4-2-3-1. In terms of goal conversion, Diouf’s 21.4% was fourth among all forwards last year, though his versatility can go against him, with the Potters boss handing him a right flank berth on a number of occasions.

Following Wilfried Bony’s January move to City, it took Bafetimbi Gomis some time to find his best form at Swansea. The France international seemed to improve week-by-week throughout the second half of last season, though, and scored six of his seven goals in his final ten appearances. Now the clear first-choice at the Liberty, with summer signing Eder seemingly offering back-up, Gomis should thrive with the likes of Andre Ayew and Gylfi Sigurdsson providing support from midfield. Available at 7.0, the former Lyon forward – who notched against the likes of Arsenal and City last season – looks one of the more appealing and potentially most consistent options in the mid-price roster. He’s also off the mark this summer, finding the net in a 2-1 win over 1860 Munich earlier tonight.

Saido Berahino was one of last season’s success stories in the budget bracket. After scoring 14 goals, the England U21 has been handed a price hike this time around, though still sets us back a respectable 6.5. The Baggies didn’t create an awful lot of chances last season, ranking 19th out of all 20 Premier League sides for attempts on goal, with more of our Fantasy focus on their reliable defence under Tony Pulis. Nonetheless, a goal conversion rate of 16.3% illustrates how clinical the youngster is in front of goal, though, and after some difficult opening fixtures, spot-kick taker Berahino could provide a viable option as a third forward. The Baggies striker netted in his first appearance of the summer in a friendly win over Charleston Battery earlier this morning.

One of the other stand-out names in this price range is West Ham’s Diafra Sakho, who comes in at 6.5. In an injury-hit campaign that restricted him to 23 appearances, Sakho still netted every 184.1 minutes – that’s sandwiched between Charlie Austin (178.9) and Christian Benteke (192.8), for example. Providing he can steer clear of the treatment room, he should benefit from an attack-minded approach under Slaven Bilic and has four very favourable home matches (LEI, BOU, NEW, NOR) in the first seven Gameweeks. With Andy Carroll (6.5) now expected to be out until mid-October due to an ongoing knee injury, Sakho’s eye for goal could be key to ensuring Bilic’s tenure gets off to a profitable start.

Yeah. One of the player I tinker the least.

Although now that you mention it, I can get Costa + 9m instead of Tekkers and Hazard.

        But nah methinks?

In the event Hennessey moves to WBA, I'd rather have Guzan/Hennessey.

Gives you a decent AVL/WBA rotation... and you don't have to make a transfer immediately when Foster is back.

Yeah fair enough. Although I might just skip Guzan altogether if Henn is confirmed as #1.

My latest WC period is on GW 8, don't think Foster is back by then?

Tricky with these keeper injuries, just see how Forster's return has been delayed. Would not want my WC decision to be driven by a keeper transfer.

Tbh it's only a transfer or at most a hit away from getting a playing keeper.

My rule of thumb of doing a WC is when

            a) Two of Hazard, Sanchez and Kun (which I will get in GW 4 for Rooney anyway) hits form
            b) Too many injuries and can't field a 11 without major surgery
            c) My big hitters dont perform and there's few bandwagon as replacements.

Or at least 2 of that conditions are met. 😀

Morgan may not make start of season due to gold cup - monitor.

Cedric seems to be card magnet with no attacking threat, but nice fixtures.

Think there are better options than yaya.

      Decent team though.

You've skirted the main issue that your defence needs wok. cedric's a card magnet in a defence without forster, toby, clyne, nor schnederlin in front of the defence. Also, your keeper pairing starts with 3 away fixtures, and hennessey might come in and take myhill's place. O'Shea is captain, but sunderland have bought two other defenders who can play cetre back - that's a lot of competition. morgan may not start as he's still in a tournament, and martin is a bencher.

          In short rubbish defence.

I'd concede that Ozil has not done as well as one would expect of him in the past two seasons, but even looking at those two years, you would have an idea of how vital he is to Arsenal, much more than Cazorla or Ramsey.

In the season before,Ozil started oh-so-well before getting an injury in the second part of the season at a time when we topped the league, and no wonder we were decimated then. In the last season, Ozil missed from October to December, returned in January, scored 3 or 4 as soon as he returned, and the club suddenly went on a crazy win streak.. it is no magic that we play so much better football with Ozil in the team. And it took Wenger a lot of games to realise he is no winger, he is the guy you play behind the striker.

And the fact that this is the first pre-season with the club, it was a late transfer in 13/14 and the WC (where he played every game) in 14/15... his strength was a work in progress when he returned this January, looking so much stronger, and tracking back so often (he was the longest runner in many a Arsenal game in 14/15). Okay he is so Sanchez with work ethic, or no Ramsey with conversion rate in front of goal, but he is the magic every club needs to unlock solid defences.

... I was a Mesut Ozil fan before he joined Arsenal. At his best, honestly, he is the best player at the club in terms of sheer quality, probably the best no. 10 in the league right now (sorry, Silva), and if Arsenal want to give a fair crack at the title this year, he will have to perform as well as he can and is expected of him.

P.S. With no Sanchez around, and Ramsey totally not nailed-on, he is my Arsenal man to have at just £8.5m.

I don't think they do, he's a counter attack and through ball specialist, who can pass his way through many defenses. The interchange and asking him to dribble and play balls out to the wings just causes him to ball watch instead of moving wit the ball.

          He should join Chelsea 😉

Yes, I would consider given he is likelier than Ozil to get a goal... But where would he play, if he were to play every game?

Coquelin is a better CDM, Cazorla is a better CM, Ozil is a better CAM, Walcott/Ox are better RMs... And even with LW open until Sanchez returns, I'd say Wilshere or Welbeck are better to be played wide left.

Attacking-wise, playing Ramsey and Cazorla in double pivot would fit all those players, but won't think Arsene would ever risk going Coq-less again.

Ramsey is a better CM than Cazorla. Cazorla is more of an attacking player but Ramsey is more of an allrounder.

Yes, you have a point there, not exactly comparable players, but could you really bench Cazorla after the season we just had? One of the most reliable players in the team, and boy, he really took that role in double pivot in his stride...

He did but Ramsey and Wilshere are the natural's in that position. I can quite easily see Cazorla get moved around a bit according to injuries and such to others.

Yep, that's true. Would expect even Wilshere to see more gametime this season, he deserves it, he has been constantly doing well with club and country for the past 3-4 months.

Too many options in that midfield honestly, would only call Ozil and Sanchez nailed that's why.

I currently have both Walcott and Ozil in my team, but I don't think Walcott will be especially nailed-on when Sanchez returns... Ramsey and Giroud contend with him for both RW and ST respectively.

Ozil on the other hand, is someone I'd like to start, and keep for 6-8 weeks, if he is as productive as I think he will be this season.

Yeah, I might be blinded by Walcott favoritism esepecially after Walcott (c) GW38. 😎

This is a slight concern. Lemela could take some of his gametime - although Chadli is poch preferred option

        1. Billy Gilmore
          • 11 Years
          8 years, 9 months ago

Surely Lamela starts on the other wing? Isn't Clownsend his only competition?

It's not that simple. Poch chops and changes on occasion with even eriksen playing where Chadli does and dembele through the middle (or even Chadli!)

That said I believe Chadli is his preferred option on that side

            1. Billy Gilmore
              • 11 Years
              8 years, 9 months ago

But it's basically this in order of preference for attacking mids:

Eriksen > Chadli >>>>>>>> Lamela > Townsend > everyone else

Personally I don't rate Chadli as a player but that doesn't mean he's not a good pick for fpl.

And yes, I think that order is broadly correct.

                  No.

In and out, in and out.

He is not a definite starter and seems to get subbed a lot too.

                  Avoid - like last season.

You're saying that like that's what happened last season. In reality he was injured GW1, the started GW2-11, then got injured. Was eased in with sub apps GW14-16. Started GW17-22 then his dad died and was given some compassionate leave and reduced role in the side for a month or so. Then he returned to the starting lineup in GW28 and started every game.

He's as much a definite starter as nearly everyone else in the league.

Most have some sort of loose plan from gw 3 onwards , to get Kun , early WC and/or WC by gw 9.
With so many variables in planning and strategy I find it difficult to criticise the majority of teams being posted .

Probably a combination of opening fixtures, wariness about Spurs' inconsistency and maybe underlying concern about whether he can sustain his performance; how many players have we seen have a great half season and then disappear? He was pretty poor in the last couple of months of the season.

Might also be daft psychological biases - he was such an outrageous bargain at 5.5m, 9.5 seems so expensive, even though rationally, 9.5 would have been cheap for his peak last season.

    Guzan, Hennessey,
    Azpilicueta, Mertesacker, Williams, Huth, O'Shea/Coates,
    Hazard, Walcott/Sterling, Ozil, Henderson/Chadli, Wanyama,
    Costa, Kane/Benteke, Ighalo.

I think I'm not going to tinker too much from this set-up here. Only major dilemma will be.
    *Walcott or Sterling.
    *Henderson+Kane or Chadli+Benteke.
    *my keepers.

Still happy at what I'm getting towards. 😉

      Walcott
      C & B
Just watch out for Myhill. Truly wonderful end to last Season, behind a crap defence.

Yes, would not choose my keepers now, still a lot of transfers, and first-choice identifications to be done.

And you know, if I downgrade O'Shea to a 4.0, I can actually have Benteke and Sakho in attack, Worth it?

Sterling and Walcott? Otherwise a solid team (I'm all over Ighalo too!)

Guys, can anyone help with best rotating fixtures for GK, Def & ST? 2-way, 3-way & H/A?

Hmm, downgrading Lukaku to Sakho suddenly seems appealing......

well, same story, dont go near Lukaku when that selfish clown Mirallas is still there

        Indeed, sir.

Though may use money on going Hendo to DePay.

Was thinking of transferring Lukaku out in GW2 for Gomis anyway, but Sakho certainly comes into my reckoning now.

Unless Austin goes to West Ham or Villa.

    Ruddy - Rudd

    Ivan - Lescott - Huth (O'shea - Saylor)
    Haz - Ozil - Yaya - Ritchie - Hendo
    Rooney - Lukaku (Deeney)

Alright guys. This seems to be it for me. A final RMT please?

Will ship Luka out for Sakho after gw1

Don't make a transfer plan (anyone could get sent off/injured/dropped) and pick Sakho from the start if that's who you plan to go with afterwards. Its a nice team all round but Ozil Yaya blow hot and cold, fantasy-wise

Its either Ozil or Walcott. And Yaya or Sterling. Who would you pick?

And I know what you mean on the transfer plan but its just too tempting. Its a great fixture for Everton and not so great for Sakho. After it becomes vice versa

I don't see a lot of Mata in the teams so far.
Though I really consider having him on board for gw1. Looks like nailed un the man u starting XI + constant threat + potential penalty taker + big PL experience.
    8.5 looks very attractive here

      0/2 (rotation poor, imo.)
      1/3
      2/3
2/2 = 5/10 Not too keen on individual selections, myself:

      Clyne to Skrtel
      Cedric to Fonte

      for instance.

      Ive gone Ozil.

You could make a soli argument for either of those 3 though. I don't think any are as safe as Sanchez once he's up to speed though.

He's definitely the safe choice. I just wonder if he'll havd less attackung stats this term, though.

        Pens in his locker though.
