Moving Target

Moving Target – Raheem Sterling

On July 14, Manchester City signed Raheem Sterling from Liverpool for a reported fee of £44m, which could rise to £49m, making him City’s record signing and the most expensive English player ever. The 20-year-old signed a five-year contract at the Etihad and was City’s first new recruit of the summer, although they have since added two further English signings, Fabian Delph and Patrick Roberts.

Manager Manuel Pellegrini was clearly delighted with the capture of Sterling and hailed the new boy’s pace and versatility as key to City’s attack:

“I think that Raheem can play in different positions – he can play as a forward because he has a lot of speed or he can play also on the wing. He’s a very young player so he has a lot of things to improve. I think it’s important for him to have a new challenge in our team where he will play with great players which will improve his game. He will also improve us as a team. I think that Raheem has already demonstrated what he can do as a player at Liverpool but he’s just 20-years old so he has a lot of things to improve. “It will depend how he works over the next few years but I am sure he will be very important in our team, especially for his speed.”

THE HISTORY

Born in Jamaica, Sterling moved to London at the age of seven and began his career at Queens Park Rangers in 2003. He spent seven years at Loftus Road, before Liverpool, then managed by Rafael Benitez, swooped to sign the youngster in February 2010 for an initial fee of £600,000, rising to £5 million depending on how many appearances he made for the first team.

Sterling made his senior debut for the Reds in March 2012, coming on as a substitute against Wigan in the Premier League, aged just 17. His first competitive Liverpool goal came later that year, in a 1-0 league win against Reading, and he would go on to make 24 league appearances during the 2012/13 campaign, scoring twice and registering two assists, or six in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game.

His big breakthrough came the following season, with Sterling flourishing alongside Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge as Liverpool finished second to City in their bid for the Premier League title. He scored nine times and racked up five assists (seven in FPL) from 33 appearances, including the opening goal as the Reds beat City 3-2 at Anfield. Last season, Sterling registered seven goals and seven assists (ten in FPL) from 35 league outings, and regularly played as a centre-forward due to Daniel Sturridge missing much of the campaign through injury. His form dipped towards the end of the season, however, with his contract dispute affecting his on-field performances.

Sterling represented England through all the age-groups and made his senior debut against Sweden in November 2012. He had to wait until March 2014 for his second cap, but a man-of-the-match performance against Denmark helped secure his spot in the 23-man squad for the 2014 World Cup. Sterling was one of only a few England players who left Brazil with their reputation enhanced, and he has since gone on to become an integral part of the team, scoring his first goal for his country against Lithuania in March.

THE PROSPECTS

Sterling’s debut for City against Roma yesterday morning immediately caught the eye. Not only did the youngster get on the scoresheet within three minutes of his first outing, his inclusion in the starting XI saw Pellegrini roll out a 4-3-3 set-up, allowing Sterling and David Silva freedom to roam the flanks.

Certainly, such a system would not only bolster Sterling and Silva’s prospects, it would ensure that Sergio Aguero will be utilised as a lone striker – a factor that strengthens the Argentine’s Fantasy potential, given that he operates far more efficiently on his own up top.

It may well be that Pellegrini also flits between his previous 4-4-2 and 4-2-3-1 formations in accordance with opponent but it’s already clear that Sterling’s acquisition affords the Citizens greater variety in the final third. Able to play on the flank or through the middle, he certainly looks likely to jump ahead of both Samir Nasri and Jesus Navas in the pecking order and is set to vie for our attentions along with Silva and Yaya Toure. Priced at 9.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Sterling comes in cheaper than Silva (10.0), but slightly more expensive than Toure (8.5), with Nasri and Navas available at 7.0 and 6.5 respectively.

When assessing our City options, there is also the small matter of Aguero, however. At this point, it is unclear if the Argentine will feature in the Gameweek 1 trip to West Brom and with a clash against Chelsea the following weekend, many Fantasy managers are in a quandary over whether to include him in their initial 15-man squads.

Given that City’s schedule turns very favourable from Gameweek 4 onwards (WAT, cpl, WHU, tot, NEW, BOU), ignoring Aguero looks decidedly dangerous, with the South American an obvious armband candidate for those four home fixtures in particular. Having scored 83 goals last season – ten more than Chelsea – and having found the back of the net 102 times during their title winning 2013/14 campaign, Pellegrini’s side undoubtedly possess tremendous attacking potential.

Bearing in mind that the likes of Eden Hazard and Alexis Sanchez have been priced at 11.5 and 11.0 respectively, doubling up with Aguero and a relatively cheaper City midfielder certainly looks a feasible tactic over that stretch of matches, then, and if Sterling can carry on from yesterday’s display, he could quickly find a place in our five-man midfields for the campaign ahead.

      Agbonlahor, Matic and Valencia aren't popular picks, or decent fantasy football prospects.

      I don't want to be mean, but...I hate it. Matic is pointless, he's not even 4.5 and he takes up a Chelsea slot, and with Courtois you now only have space for 1 Chelsea player. What will you do if Hazard, Fabregas and Costa tear it up? And if you have gone with a big hitter in Courtois, why have you got Adrian as back up?

      Valencia is a huge rotation risk, as is Trippier. I like Walcott as a pick in isolation - he's in my team - but he will also be at risk, certainly when Sanchez is back. That could leave you with at least 3 players who need shifting within 2-3 weeks. Payet is also unproven. A lot of punts.

      I don't rate Agbonlahor, but I like Rooney and Benteke.

      Sorry if that's pretty ruthless.

          A few tips:
          Goalkeepers: Aim to keep your keepers around the 8.5 - 9.5 mark in total. So keep Courtois, and downgrade Adrian to a 4.0. Personally I would dump Courtois. If you do so, you then have to decide between Rotating keepers (which can be hard since you have to choose each week!), stick to just one keeper and a non playing keeper or buy both the first keeper and the reserve keeper from the same team (aim for 8.5 here!).

          Most teams get clean sheets at home, but there are exceptions. Last season Sunderland and Swansea for example did just as good or even better away from home. Adrian is a penalty killer, so props for considering him! West Ham should improve this year, second half of last year was unbelievable. You seem to know about the rotations, so have your pick. My choice would be Panti, Fabbi of Adrian, or a 4.5 - 4.0 from the same team (krul for example).

          I will keep it short from now on:
          Def: I like that you want to go for attacking potential, but I think you can do better. Downgrade Trippier for example to Alderwereld. I don't rate Southampton, but feel free to try your best. West ham have def's for 5.0, but also depends on your gk, doubling up might be a bit risky. Valenica -> Shaw if you want to go Man Utd, he will improve. Smalling the premium choice. Clyne is fine!

          Mid: Matic has been discussed. Payet unproven in PL, seems a great prospect (!), but quite expensive. Sakho seems better value up front and he should benefit! Does take set pieces from Cresswell as well, keep that in mind.
          If you fix these you could keep Walcott, who has a chance of getting benched, you probably follow the debate about his starting prospects so I don't have to tell you that. I have him though. Chadli great value! Silva as well, but is on the expensive side for midfielders, on the cheap side for premium midfielders. But I like him! You could downgrade him to balance the team.

          Forwards: Rooney is fine, question mark about penalties though. Great fixtures and should play central and forward! Benteke is also fine. Agbonlahor however is not, get rid of him! Haha. Sherwood will probably get Ade which is fabulous 😉 Think about whether you want a 5.5 striker, such as Wilson or Deeney, or if you want to spend a lil bit more so you can get Sakho or a 8 million striker such as Pelle/ Lukaku.

          I didn't really keep it short, but who cares! Good luck and keep it up!

              You're welcome. I'm curious what you're going to decide. Defenders are the hardest to decide on, especially the cheap ones. There is such an onus on getting the big guns that people sometimes forget to consider cheaper options, unless it's absolutely clear that someone offers ridicilously good value. You don't have to keep players a whole year, and personally I love taking a good hit or two to set up my team for the next month or so and gaining some team value in the process.

              Just of the top of my head I would make these changes to your team (for example and considering the choices you already made):

              Courtois -> 4.0 = +1.5
              Cresswell -> Jenkinson = +0.5
              Cedric -> Azpi (you want some Chelsea I suppose)= - 1
              Valenica -> Shaw = 0
              Trippier -> Nor 4.5 Martin or Whittaker = +1
              Matic -> 4.5 non chelsea such as Anya / Surman / Wanyama (These players are not gonna give you any points!)
              Payet - > Mane = -.5
              Agbonlahor -> Sakho = -1.5

              Adrian - 4.0 (prob hennesy as he is very popular)
              Clyne - Azpi- Shaw - Jenkinson - Nor 4.5
              Silva - Walcott - Chadli - Mane - 4.5
              Rooney - Benteke - Sakho

                To be clear, this is not the best team or the the team that I would select but I wanted to show you how you could change the look of your whole team by shuffling budget from gk and defence to midfield and attack.

                This defence would still leave you with difficult fixtures for the start of the PL. Clean sheets are hard to predict but going with Stoke away (Clyne), Spurs at home (Shaw) , Ars away (Jenk) is tough. Azpi vs SWA is okay, NOR vs CPA not really. Well get to it, good luck!

      You need to downgrade one of your keepers and 2 or 3 of the defenders. Use this cash to upgrade Agbonlahor.

      I don't think it's that bad, certainly not as bad as some are saying. For sure, Matic isn't the best choice and Spagbol's best fantasy days are behind him. Adrian is a pointless pick if you have Courtois. But I can see why you have gone for the other mids and forwards, as well as Clyne and Cresswell, and to a certain extent Valencia (esp after VG's declaration).

          depends what you mean by risk, He will play or he wont, and I expect that he will exactly half the time. so half the time you will have expensive bench fodder. I love him but I cant find a way to make it viable in FF, just like Mata, what a player. unbelievably important in Chelsea's Title last year, some would argue he was the most important, but he didnt get any points.....

    Bored at work. Can't resist a late-afternoon RMT

    Schmeichel (Fabianski)

    Azpi - Merts - Francis (Prodl - Targett)

    Hazard (c) - Silva - Payet - Ritchie

    Aguero - Gomis - Sakho

    I'm tempted to drop Hazard to Fabs and boost Ritchie to an 8.5, possibly Caz/Depay. Thoughts on team please people...

        I think my main concern with Haz/Ritchie-->Fab/Caz is it gives me one less captain option a week., especially if Aguero is not ready GW1.

        That said if hes not ready the whole team gets an overhaul...!

    I Increasingly like the look of this team which has 2 million in the bank to do Costa to Aguero (Or hopefully 2.5 if Myhill can become Hennessey then I have the option of Rooney to Aguero too)

    Butland - Myhill/Hennessy
    Mertesacker - Cedric - Lescott - Mings - Prodl
    Payet - Walcott - Depay - Mane - Wanyama
    Rooney - Costa - Wilson

    What do you think? I am open to changing my rotating Mings and Prodl

    I really am starting to warm to the idea of getting Agbonlahor.

    Villa have improved offensively under Sherwood.

    Agbonlhaor will çurrently be the main striker. Villa have kind fixtures.

    He is 5m and nearly scored the same points as Sakho who lots seem to like.

      They're going to sign a real striker, probably Ade.

    RMT please 🙂

    Courtois
    Huth Mert Matthews
    Ritchie Redmond Fab Depay
    Costa Aguero Kane

    Hamer Anya Micah Targett

    Aguero won't start GW 1
    Sterling in for Depay possibly as I have £0.5m left

      Sterling in for Depay - more experience in BPL... Kane and Redmond to Benteke and Milner/Hendo/Chadli. Also Bertrand just up on Twitter that he will be back sooner than expected-likely to be back for the start of the season.. With that in mind you should change Targett to another 4m defender.. Hope that helps!

    Is Hendo this year, Siggy last year?

    You know you want him yet you leave him out of your team.

        If Hendo gets pens then Hendo will out score Milner IMO

    Hi guys,

    I am re-opening entry to my £5 cash league.

    Currently have around 35 members who have paid £5 each. Hoping to get this number to around 60-70 so we have a nice pot of money to give out when the season ends.

    No fees.

    1st Place - 50% of total pot
    2nd Place - 30% of total pot
    3rd Place - 20% of total pot

    If you are interested, send me an email at fantasyfootballaz7@gmail.com. The £5 will be paid through PayPal. Weekly updates to be posted on the community round up and hopefully this will become a yearly competition I run.

    If you were on the reserve list, please check your emails as I emailed you all a few weeks ago.

    Cheers

    Leicester (H) Spurs (A)
    Bournemouth (H) Norwich (A)
    Liverpool (A) West Brom (H)
    Newcastle (H) Arsenal (A)
    Man City (A) Leicester (H)
    Norwich (H) Bournemouth (H)

      Great team. How are you thinking of rotating your defenders?
      You think Leicester have clean sheets in them this season?
      Literally just Bamford I wouldn't want in your team
