DugoutFC

Introducing Dugout FC

Every season we see new games launch, new diversions and distractions from the regular Fantasy Football fare. The latest to catch our eye boasts a number of polished bells and whistles but, at its core, is refreshingly old school. A good thing.

In a crowded and competitive market, Dugout FC has gone back to basics to attempt to establish a Fantasy foothold.

Crucially, it’s a draft game – a very different proposition to the standard fare and a format that, only last weekend, was the subject of a notable community article.

As that article stated, there are a growing number of draft games available but, from our first impressions, Dugout FC might just have the edge and deserve our attention.

What is it?

Dugout FC and other draft-based Fantasy games take us back to our Fantasy Football roots; rolling back the years to when we took time to organise an auction and play with a team made up of unique players, dear to our hearts, over the course of the season.

If you fondly remember paying a fortune so that nobody but you would own Premier League goal machines such as Alan Shearer or Thierry Henry, then Dugout FC’s game should provide you with some cosy warm nostalgia.

Having said that, the game is very much up to date, with all manner of technology in play: online matchday hubs for real-time updates and live chat; IOS and Android mobile apps; an Opta stats-based scoring model and the ability to run your draft night and conduct transfers in game are all catered for.

You’ve got the option to to go full old-school and gather a bunch of mates in a pub to take part in the all-important draft in your private league. Or you can log in to the virtual “draft room” and bid against friends or complete strangers by joining a public league. There’s even an option to draw up a shortlist of desired players to take care of your draft, in case you miss out on the night.

Why Should I Play?

Well, it’s free for starters. For that reason alone, we’re struggling to find a catch.

Perhaps more importantly, as we become jaded with competing against fellow managers with template teams, Dugout FC provides an antidote.

There really is nothing quite like the drama and twists of a draft night. The plotting, the intrigue, the tactics, the highs of bagging your star pick and the lows of having to dip into the bin of rejects to complete your squad – it’s fair to say it’s one of the reasons I fell in love with Fantasy Football all those years ago.

Dugout FC takes the faff out of all the draft logistics, whilst claiming to have a unique Opta-based scoring system, taking over 2,000 events of every match into account, which they reckon is one of the best around. We’ll check in on that in a follow-up article.

Once the draft is complete, you’ll compete in a league of ten on a head-to-head basis – with three points for a win and one for a draw.

Each league can have multiple divisions and FC even takes care of the promotion and relegation up and down the ladder at the end of each season.

Your squad will consist of 18 players following the draft, although you can swap out players to pick up free agents from the player pool at any time. You can also enter into negotiations for swap deals with other managers in your division – it’s all taken care of within Dugout FC’s tech.

The game takes this further by generating stories of transfer speculation on behind-the-scenes wheeling and dealing in your division.

How Do I Start?

By registering here: https://www.dugoutfc.com. As mentioned, it’s free to join.

You’ll then need to decide whether to join a league or set up your own. If you’ve got an odd number of players wanting to join, Dugout FC will provide a Caretaker Manager to play against one person each week for the three points. The Caretaker Manager scores the average of all other teams in the division for that week.

Once that’s sorted, arranging a time for your draft date and time is the main priority.

And if you want to get involved without signing up as a league chairman, we’ve set up our own Fantasy Football Scout Public League for you to join. Just click this link and request an invite and you’ll be signed up.

It’s first come, first served so the earlier you get involved, the higher the division of our league you’ll be placed in. And yes, before you ask, we’ve already filled the top division with Paul, Jonty, Granville and the rest.

Our default auction date for each division is currently Thursday, August 6, at 9pm UK time.

For more information about Dugout FC, visit their FAQ. We’ve also added a smart little movie they’ve put together, complete with over-enthusiastic narration (see below).

We’ll be following this article up with a more in-depth scan of Dugout FC’s scoring system and strategies next week…

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I'm very unconvinced by Chadli and don't mind so much having pool attackers, I feel coverage is a myth for attacking imo

Pretty sure actually, I read a very good piece on an Arsenal forum stating how Mertesacker cane on strong last season and Gabriel has been spotty when he plays and that it's Merts position to lose and even if Gab does play, due to the type of builds the players are....perhaps kosc instead could be rotated

Is the consensus that 3-4-3 is best formation or are people also considering playing 3-5-2 or 4-3-3?

My team is geared towards 3-4-3, less decisions to make IMO.

Yes I am leaning towards 3-4-3 as well. Just thought Sakho and Wilson can be great rotation options in a 3-5-2.

    2. Billy Gilmore
      • 11 Years
      8 years, 9 months ago

The way I see it is a 4-3-3 will give you reasonable scores with less variability but less potential. At the start of the season it is easier to identify the ~6m defenders to have than the ~6m midfielders. The thing that sways me to 3-4-3 is it doesn't particularly matter which one you actually pick as you can hop on the right ones with FTs assuming you left yourself with some flexibility. There is always a Siggy/Downing/Ramsey/Michu etc and they score massively more than the expensive defenders given the likely period of ownership.

      1. Billy Gilmore
        • 11 Years
        8 years, 9 months ago

3-5-2/3-4-3 depends on the players really. If like a couple of seasons ago there are numerous heavy scoring mids and not many forwards then a 3-5-2 is best, but at the start of the season it is more expensive as sub mids are cheaper than sub forwards.

        1. Jigger & Pony
          • 10 Years
          8 years, 9 months ago

My 3-5-2 team has this fwd lineup:

          Hazard - Sterling - Ozil - Chadli - Milner
          Rooney - Sakho - Wilson

          3-4-3 would be:

          Sterling - Ozil - Chadli - Milner - 4.5
          Costa - Rooney - Sakho
          2.0 itb for upgrading someone

          What do you think?

            • 11 Years

Prefer the 3-4-3 even without the 2m. Would much rather Wally over Ozil personally but understand the appeal of bug-eyes

If I was a 32.5 million striker taking penalties regularly, moving to a club who's number 1 spot kick taker has taken only a handful of peons in his life and is easily persuaded to give up the roll!

Low. Bertrand's recovering better than expected. I'd say 1 or 2 GWs max, if any at all.

      I'm not Lucy though.

Does anyone use Pareto Principle when picking teams?

      Whats that?

80% of effects comes from 20% of causes.
In FPL terms, your big points comes from 2-3 players only. The rest doesn't matter.

        1. Billy Gilmore
          • 11 Years
          8 years, 9 months ago

          😕

The rest is what makes all the difference...everybody owns those 2-3 players and it's the other ones that separate the pack.

I'd like to see someone's team that is truly based on this principle.

        2. Holmes
          • 10 Years
          8 years, 9 months ago

The rest does matter in this case. Picking rubbish defenders from rubbish defense is going to be -ve pts galore, so all hard work done by 20% is going to be wasted.

      2. Holmes
        • 10 Years
        8 years, 9 months ago

Ah, ok, got it. I didnt knew that principle but my team is based on that principle 😛

like, it's better off with Hazard+Chadli than yaya+Walcott for example.

Couple of A or B decisions. Who would you choose?

    A) Pantilimion and Cedric
    B) Stekelenburg and PVA

    A) Mata
    B) Depay

As someone that's never used rotating keepers before:
Would option A) Ruddy/Butland and Azpi
    Outscore B) Courtois/4.0 and Mert?

Not nailed but likely to play. Also very likely to be substituted early if things are not going well as he doesn't offer much when it comes to the build up play.

    Morning Guys

Couple of questions for you based on current team

    Schmeichel
    Ivanovic Yoshida Targett
    Hazard Mata Cazorla Mane
    Costa Benteke Sakho

    Hamer Anya Francis Prodl

    £100 spent

Is Yoshida nailed? If not then if upgrading to Fonte

Would you replace Mane with Henderson (or another)
Or replace Sakho with Deeney (or another)

    Cheers!

Yoshida and Targett unless they buy, and Bert will be back crazy double there neither were in that stellar d-line last go.

Hate the double keeper (19 away LEI games)?

      Love the * except Anya >4.5 then 8.5 keepers> 9.0

    Ruddy
    Francis/Koscielny/Ivanovic

    Kane/Rooney

    Subs: Rudd/Huth/Graham/Turner

    RMT please guys...
