Moving Target

Moving Target – Carl Jenkinson

Earlier this month, West Ham announced that Carl Jenkinson was to join on loan from Arsenal for a second successive season.

Speaking to the club’s official website, the England international spoke of his happiness at returning to Upton Park and desire to prove himself to new Hammers boss Slaven Bilic:

“To be honest I just wanted to come back here and I’m happy everything’s been sorted out. I’ve got another season here and I can’t wait… I’ve got to come in, show what I can do and prove myself to a new manager. That keeps you on your toes and I’ve got to go and do that in pre-season. I’m looking forward to it.”

THE HISTORY

Jenkinson began his footballing journey at Charlton Athletic in 2010, and was immediately loaned out to Conference South side Welling United. He made 10 appearances for the non-league outfit, and was later sent out on loan to Conference Premier team Eastbourne Borough in November 2010, where he featured four times before returning to the Valley. He made his debut for the Addicks in the Football League Trophy against Brentford, and would go on to make seven more appearances during the 2010/11 season for the then-League One side.

His performances for Charlton persuaded Arsenal to move for the young right-back, signing the defender for an undisclosed fee believed to be around £1 million. Jenkinson made his debut for the Gunners in the final qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League against Udinese in August 2011, and went on to make nine Premier League appearances during his first campaign at the Emirates, bagging one assist.

An injury to first-choice right-back Bacary Sagna meant Jenkinson started the first five matches of the 2012/13 campaign, and he would go on to make 14 league starts that season, before racking up another 14 appearances during the 2013/14 campaign. The defender would score his fist senior goal for Arsenal on the final day of the season, while he also registered two assists that year.

In order to find regular first-team football, Jenkinson joined West Ham on a season-long loan ahead of the 2014/15 season, and made 29 starts, chalking up two assists. His impressive performances earned the defender a new long-term contract at the Emirates this summer.

Jenkinson picked up his only international cap against Sweden in November 2012, although he has been a regular for the Under-21s and started all three matches in this summer’s European Under-21 Championship.

THE PROSPECTS

After nailing down a regular role for the Hammers last time out, Jenkinson is expected to return to the first XI for the season ahead, with Joey O’Brien providing back-up in light of the club’s decision to release Guy Demel over the summer.

With Bilic looking for a more attack-minded approach than Sam Allardyce, the Hammers full-backs will be expected to offer plenty of support further up the pitch. Coming in at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Jenkinson is cheaper than left-back Aaron Cresswell (5.5), who could well lose some dead-ball duties due to Dimitri Payet’s arrival.

Central defensive trio Winston Reid, James Tomkins and Angelo Ogbonna all come in at 5.0 but it remains to be seen which of the former two will partner the big-money signing from Juventus in the heart of defence. Reid looks favourite but Tomkins has netted twice over the summer already; should either establish themselves as a regular starter, they will challenge Jenkinson as the best 5.0 option available at the back.

Given that Ogbonna only scored one league goal in Italian football since making his debut for Torino in 2006, his appeal could be limited to picking up bonus points through the changes in the Bonus Point System (BPS), which is expected to favour dominant central defenders.

In terms of Jenkinson’s attacking numbers last season, the right-back registered 13 attempts, while he fared better in terms of creating chances, clocking up 22 key passes over the course of the campaign. Southampton duo Ryan Bertrand and Nathaniel Clyne provided 23 and 22 key passes respectively from a similar number of appearances, highlighting how impressive Jenkinson’s threat down the right flank was for the Hammers in the previous campaign.

Having only just returned to training this week after an extended rest due to his international exertions, Jenkinson is a little behind in his match sharpness; he is also ineligible to face his parent club Arsenal in Gameweek 1.

Following that, though, Jenkinson is handed four very favourable home matches against Leicester, Bournemouth, Newcastle and Norwich over the subsequent six Gameweeks. Given that he’s also away to Liverpool and City over that period, the right-back could prove an ideal candidate for a rotation pairing – a Leicester and West Ham double-up would give a very friendly run (SUN, LEI, BOU, bou, AVL, sto, NOR, nor, cpl, CPL, wat, WAT) over the opening 12 Gameweeks, setting you back 9.5 for the defensive pairing, with the 4.5-priced Robert Huth looking the prime target from the Foxes, given Wes Morgan is currently featuring for Jamaica in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Nope, Clarke, Richards and even a fit Okore should be ahead of Baker.

One might present itself at some point, but the prices this year have been designed to avoid any nailed on 4m defenders.

Who would go first in a draft league?

My mates from work and I do a draft league and it's always fun to guess who would go in the first round of picks. There are 8 in our league so I'd predict:

    1. Aguero
    2. Hazard
    3. Rooney
    4. Sanchez
    5. Costa
    6. Kane

Benteke looks tempting now but will he get the minutes when sturridge is back? could Ings be preferred against certain opposition? would mean a total rejig of my team structure to get an 8.5 striker so don't want to do it if its only short term

    1. Dr Joness
      • 8 Years
      8 years, 9 months ago

Depends how well Benteke plays, if he's on form and firing in the goals, then Sturridge won't be a threat. If he's playing poor then vice versa. Or when both fit, Rodgers could opt for a 2 up top and see how that goes. Ings could be preferred to stretch defences with his pace, but only out wide I think.

Think hes nailed as long he doesn't regress to Balotelli/Lambert levels or anything. Sturridge is never particularly reliable so who knows if he will actually make it back to the levels he was hitting before and besides Liverpool had great success playing that 2 striker system so I'd expect them to go back to that if Sturridge does come back.

He'll start, but challenge Donk for top spot? Or even keep Caz, Ramsey, Ozil out the team?

            1. Wilshere Knowledge
              • 10 Years

When he plays, he'll get goals, no doubt about it. It's just about whether we can integrate his play style with the other players in our team.

I think he'll challenge Giroud up top, but I'd call it at 50/50 at the moment.

Ozil is 100% nailed on, Cazorla's position isn't threatened by Theo (he's competing for the central spot with Ramsey and Wilshere, and is currently rightfully first choice), but yes he could be fighting Ramsey for a spot on the right.

Lots of maybes about him, but he's worth the risk... maybe. 😉 😀

Last night somebody said that the new bonus points structure strongly favours centre backs over full backs? I was thinking about Mings/Francis from Bournemouth but does this mean their centre backs are more appealing?

    1. Wilshere Knowledge
      • 10 Years

Depends on the players really. The BAPS system further reward tackles, interceptions, blocks and clearances, and some centre back are better than their fellow full backs, and sometimes the inverse is true.

Ashley Williams will do well from the system, but so will Azpi for example.

Francis got good numbers in the Championship, so if form translates, he should be good on the BAPS.

RMT, Can't think of a more perfect team balance and top player wise!! Before anyone says I don't really want to upgrade the defence as I'd much prefer to have better players in the midfield/forward positions.

Can't decide between the 7.0 spot though, henderson/milner or chadli.

    Butland

    Azpil / Huth / Francis

    Hazard / Sterling / Cazorla / Henderson

    Costa / Rooney / Sahko

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic - The curious case of Christian Benteke

With Benteke’s move to Liverpool now sealed are you more or less likely to want him in your team?

How will he fit in with Liverpool’s style of play? What does this mean for other players such as Danny Ings?

Does having someone who has scored goals before in the Premier League make you prefer options such as Milner and Henderson?

In the first 6 GWs he provides a potentially great captain choice in GW2 (Bournemouth H) and GW6 (Norwich H). Will he be yours?

Liverpool will have to change their style of play to suit him.

More. I really think he's going to be a success.

It means Ings is bench fodder. He'll fit Liverpool just fine - similar to how Pelle works at Southampton, just because you have a target man (who is good with his feet) doesn't mean you can't counter attack.

He is my captain GW2 if he looks any good GW1.

Probably makes him a good option but I'm a bit hesitant to back in a Liverpool striker especially if they are only playing one up top. To really get the best out of him Liverpool are going to have to change their style a bit and don't know yet if they are actually willing to do it.

He's in my Aguero draft team - he was as a Villa player and remains as a Liverpool player.

His form at the end of last was devasting, and with better attacking players around him he could really shine. Although I do wonder if he's better as a big fish in a small pond. What's his record like for Belgium?

More likely for sure. He needs no introduction. Stoke first game, he'll be relishing the physical battle and will sure play that game. Gw2 first Anfield game, easier opposition, he should start with a bang. Ings threat is minimal. It's difficult to know if he'll for into the style of play, Villa played the most crosses last season, Liverpool near enough the least. Big difference to his preferred style. He has a threat to penalty duties, and Henderson may hand him a penalty so he can get off the mark early, that confidence then will benefit the while team. Captain for them 2 GWs is a must.

Other than optimism, which is dangerous when Benteke, Pelle, Kane, Giroud, Sakho... ALL have more goals than him and the same, if not better fixtures, so how is he a good option?

Leaing towards Costa and Rooney as my two heavy frontmen from the start. Some say they can be switched to Benteke and Aguero after a couple of weeks, but at that time it is very likely that one or both of Roo and Costa has delivered big and would be impossible to sell on, so we'll see.

Benteke looks great value tho. Could force an early WC.

I think Tekkers will need a few games to adjust to Pools stype of play. Also, what kind of pre season has he had? Not a full one I suspect. To start with Tekkers is a risk that could actually see a flood of sells if he blanks GW2 and other stikers, cough*.. Sakho, Pelle, Kane bring home the points. I'm happy to play the waiting game on this curious cat,

Whilst he's not in my team at the moment, I think that he's an excellent option. I have toyed the costa+rooney+benteke, but that's just too top heavy to me and makes the switch to kun harder.

Whether I want him more or less now he's at pool... no, but it does strengthen the need for some pool attack -- I think he does lift hendo and milner (and coutinho).

As has already been mentioned, roo+costa to kun+benteke is an easy way to get aguero.

Amazingly, I think in my gut I trusted Sherwoood's Villa to produce better chances for Benteke than I do Rodgers' Liverpool.

The big loser is obviously Ings - he could have been the perfect stop gap until Sturridge was back.

For me, Benteke has been historically somewhat overated, i think because he has gone through some purple patches that some people benefitted from and hence those that did benefit have a strong affinity for him.

If he looks good and starts well at Liverpool i may well consider him.

I'm planning on starting with Rooney and Costa. Then going Costa -> Benteke GW2 (so no Costa vs City but I have Benteke at home to Bournemouth). Then do Rooney to Aguero GW4 (so I still have Rooney against Newcastle GW3 and get Kun for the Watford game GW4).

Less, definitely less. He was awesome at Villa and he was awesome because they played direct. Liverpool do not play direct and Benteke will need to adjust. We can't assume he will adjust seamlessly and be just as good as he was at Villa. I can definitely see more potential downside than upside.
